We then drove to a geoglyph called Las Agujas de Cantallo (the Needles ). These look like lines to nearby mountains, like Cerro Blanco- the largest sand dune in the world. Then on to El Telar (theRead more
Had no idea the world’s largest sand dune was there. Is there any history recorded about the intent of the large engravings in the ground? Were they meant to be seen from space And if so was it a deity kind of thing or was it potentially extraterrestrial focused?
We laugh and say that it was, but probably not. The lines point toward known important sites (e.g. the Cerro Blanco- the giant sand dune, the Cahuachi pyramid complex, etc ) and the archaeologists are pretty sure they have perfectly explainable purposes.
excavating must have cost a fortune. So much, so spread out. wonders to behold.
The Paredones was an early Incan expansion into the area. Stone is limited here, so it was used only at the bases of the most important structures, with adobe being used for most upper walls (whichRead more
Another amazing set of photos. What sort of temperature is it reaching there daily?
it was desert, so shade made a huge difference but was hard to find. Highs were only in the low eighties, but the sun was super strong and beating on us.
After the flight, we did a bit more touring around Nazca. To get to the Cahuachi pyramids, our guide put his car in jeopardy for miles down a remote, rough and unpaved road. There were only a fewRead more
It would be my dream to be there doing that Lisa. It’s incredible what ancient civilizations were able to achieve without any of the means we have today.. Who was used as labor to build these? As we know that is often the tragic side of the history.
a lot of these cultures were pretty brutal. I really struggle with the whole sacrificing young girls to appease the gods thing. The forced labor (often of conquered peoples) is also pretty heinous.
Wir gingen zurRead more

Sandboarding??
Read more

Amazing. My favorite part of history was learning about different civilizations in South America.
It's been fascinating.
Fascinating but wondrous. How little we know of our world's past
And I’ll put a plug in for those fruit! Yummy. Was the lychee juicy??
