    Josies Herding Day

    24 maj 2022, Australien ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

Today was Josie's day to show off her skills as a herding girl at 'Hooked on Hounds'. With all the support and energy (and time it took) to drive her to Kurrajong it turned out Josie is a Inner City slicker new age Kelpie girl who doesn't thrive on bossing around farm animals. She's the 'Greensland' version of our Country, taught from an early age not to bother any creature. Hence her efforts continued to focus on getting us involved in the excursion. She appeared much more interested in us and even made moves to invite the sheep to 'play'. We really didn't have any ambitions for Josie to turn into highly priced herding Kelpie but thought it could be a way to find her true nature and to rid herself of all that energy. Josie for sure is capable of achieving anything she puts her mind to, however today wasn't the venue for that. At least we gave her the opportunity. Will we try again? Maybe. Today was a bit more "meet the sheep" than "Kelpie Muster Boot Camp". So we will see. We guess the takeaway from today is that Josie is obviously not feeling too deprived living the high city life. As we have become accustomed to...she will tell us what she needs when she needs it.Läs mer

    Sydney

    18 maj 2022, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Some 3 plus hours later we arrived home and magically found a park for Casita near our home. Casita Nuevo was parked further away until we were able to move closer by the next day. Exhausted we retreated into our big bed that night, wondering why we alway make our lives so busy. Anne as usual had cared for our garden and home beautifully and we once again felt deeply indebted to her loyalty and diligent oversight.
There was one more day of sunshine forecast so we didn't waste any time to clean and wash as much as possible before more rain arrives.

    Junee

    16 maj 2022, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

We left our morning camp spot around 10 am. Driving trough town we noticed a sensational old and well preserved train station. How nice it would have been to stop and check it out!
Went to the first petrol station in Hay but instead of Diesel we found garage owner who was content to feed his crow but he had no diesel available. An amazing conversation started all about birds - not a mention about petrol. Such a generous and well grounded guy, we felt completely satisfied without having found what we looked for! Later we came to a rest stop outside of town where we had another conversation with a man who collected the garbage. Again we had some lovely exchange, incredibly enjoyable. What is it about some country people, they all seem so generous and decent.
The scenery continued to be interesting, however there were large parts of the countryside that were planted with cotton and rice - despite the normally dry conditions. Whenever we drove past areas were there was fewer agriculture the beauty was immense. A few km's out from Narrandera we had lunch at a beautiful rest stop and also allowed plenty of time for Josie to run around. Rather than retracing our steps we turned into the direction of Narrandera, the roads got much much worse, at times we had to slow down much more. We passed some incredibly pretty little towns with old buildings and awesome pubs. Eventually we made it to Junee around 3.30pm. Our first stop was a truck wash - much needed after yesterday's adventure. Later we made our way to Junee Tourist Park. Upon arrival there was no delay in taking Josie for a good walk into town. She sprinted back and forth along the pretty 'Federation Pathway' lined with bright red trees some distance into town. Again it hardly satisfied her energy requirements -although her dinner hit the right spot (from what we gather)...

    Hay

    15 maj 2022, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Another day of endless driving - so it seemed - along these awful country roads. Around 300 km's but it felt so much more. There was supposed to be a great free camp on the river, accessible only during dry weather. That didn't stop J to push ahead. He got us into a spot (me following) where we nearly got bogged, just in time we managed to retreat. 2nd time around I took the lead and we found another way in (don't ask how - I must have sniffed it out) on a much safer dirt road. Still there were lots of muddy places and it took a while to find a spot to stop (and free of monster ants!). We had a beautiful walk along the river, Josie took off like a high speed train but returning at every bend. While Josie is an excellent traveler and doesn't complain about long hours on the road, she makes up for it when she is free. It is almost impossible to satisfy her need for spending all her energy. The fire pit we started did not succeed and finally we ended up inside warming our bones over dinner. Not long after we disappeared into our cosy bed...Läs mer

    Gol Gol

    14 maj 2022, Australien ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Regrettably there was no time to enjoy S.A. like tourists. We spent the night at 'Riverbend Caravan Park'. The spot allocated to us was not on the river but rather a corner with roadworks and lots of red wet soil. It didn't matter anyway as we ended up spending the evening communicating with the solicitors and then tried to work out how to cook dinner as all our gas bottles seemed to have failed. Even the new van had hardly any gas in it - how can that be?
Tired, hungry and cool, we all waited for dinner - including Josie's chicken mince. Eventually we got one gas bottle working and we all were thankful for our evening meal.
In the morning our wish to find a local produce market was not fulfilled. Instead we visited Woolies, got petrol and drove on. Just across from the old historic Peringa bridge we stopped at the Bert Dicks Memorial Park (see photo of our two Casitas). Josie jumped out and before we knew she was limping. There was no hint of what may have caused this, we suspected she might have been bitten by an ant. She seemed ok, no allergic reaction although we were super vigilant and kept checking as we drove again past the Quarantine station from S.A. into Victoria.
Gol Gol just outside from Mildura was as far as we could possibly drive that day, about 3 hours.
The scenery with a little sunshine transformed into magic, with much regret we powered on - leaving with each kilometre this amazing landscape behind. S.A. is so underrated, without getting out of our vehicles the landscape that flew past was stunning. The colours, the trees, the multitude of greens ranging from bright to almost yellow to grey or olive is wondrous and deeply satisfying.
Gol Gol also has incredible beauty, plus huge homesteads and what we thought to be a 'millionaire's row' with large properties along the river front. Then there are the houseboats and the wide & slow flowing beautiful Murrumbigee River and the stunning gum trees with dark bark and olive leaves. Isn't it a disgrace, we have no idea what they are called.
We parked Casita Neuvo on the outside the River Gardens Caravan Park, just meters from Casita. Josie of course required some exercise and we had a few photo opportunities as well.
After dark a man questioned me, wanting to know who is staying there. It was the park manager (although we asked for a spot next to this side street to be near our 'neuvo' home). The misunderstanding was cleared up quickly and finally we fell into our beds exhausted as so regularly on this trip.

    Renmark SA

    13 maj 2022, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Today was supposed to be only a short trip, approximately 2 hours to reach Renmark. Some 15 km out from the destination we passed the Quarantine border station and stood in the queue waiting. We nearly forgot that it meant giving up all fruit and some veggies. After a while we were let into South Australia. At about this time it struck Jonathan that there might be a little stress ahead - he realised that he was running out of time to instruct our conveyancers that we would agree to a price adjustment on Maleny in return for being 'satisfied' about the building report for Maleny. He started emailing them as we waited to deal with quarantine. We passed through - arriving at Renmark at the appointed time (11am local SA time) to see our new Avida Ceduna near Hotel Renmark. We parked nearby and almost instantly encountered our vendors - Jackie and Fritz. An hour or so was spent explaining how the the camper operated. It was pretty much as anticipated - in great condition and clean, but probably requiring some changes to suit our needs in due course. Jonathan and Fritz walked to the nearby NAB branch to deal with the transfer whilst Jackie and I waited...and waited...and waited. As obliging as the local staff were, there were a few glitches but after abut 45 minutes it was done. Great! We all walked back to the motorhome...got the keys (remarkably every opening seems to have its own key!)...and asked for the signed transfer of rego form. Mmmm...problem....where was it Jackie asked Fritz...they looked and talked...and looked and talked...and decided that it must be back in Adelaide (how were they to know it might be required they said...given that they are Swiss?). It seemed all very tense. Money transferred but no signed transfer papers- surely less than ideal. Could we undo the transfer? How could we not? Could we get a replacement Rego form? After googling, we rang the nearest Service SA. Yes, a replacement could be obtained - at Berri, about 20 k's away. We headed off in our both motorhomes...us trying not to lose sight of Jackie and Fritz, in. case they might do a runner!!!! But all's well that ends well...the duplicate rego was obtained...a transfer was signed...and we returned to Renmark.. Exhausted we decided to stay in Renmark. But Jonathan in the meantime had been trying to tie down what was happening with our Maleny purchase. Emails sent whilst we had been dealing with the motorhome had not resulted in the contract going 'unconditional'. Annette walked Josie whilst Jonathan fended calls with the agent (Kate) and the conveyancer paralegal (Erica)...by close to 5pm matter were still unresolved. Friday was the day to determine whether we go ahead with the purchase - absent an agreed extension. . In the closing minutes it became clear that our conveyancer had mucked up and we decided to go with the vendor's version of the deal as it was close enough to what we needed. Phew... So, at Renmark we bought Casita 3 (hopefully our mobile home for the next decade) and also went unconditional on our Maleny purchase (hopefully our green retreat for as long or longer). Exhausted, we collapsed into bed shortly after dinner...Läs mer

    Wagga Wagga - Gol Gol

    12 maj 2022, Australien ⋅ 🌧 14 °C

Rain drops fell on our roof all night. Feeling frustrated about the lack of sleep and awake since early hours, we realised it was 6.50 am already. It was still dark outside. As soon as Josie heard us move, she wanted to go outside. The weather was awful and we managed to get on the road by 8.30 am. A quick stop at Narranderra for fuel and the journey continues along the rainy bumpy country road. We knew there was a long trip ahead. By midday we reached Hay and had a quick lunch. The 'highway' is only 2 lanes, in terrible condition, trucks and road trains coming from all direction but what was worse it was just straight and boring. The scenery for sure would have been more interesting with some sunshine but with intermittent rain along the entire way the scrubby landscape did little to lift our spirits. After 4 pm we arrived at Gol Gol, what seemed to be an outer suburb of Mildura. We were pleasantly surprised by the town on the Marrumbigee River. A long walk was the order of the afternoon and then it was time to start cooking dinner. A bottle of wine was consumed - something that we regretted later.Läs mer
