      Cardenuela-Riopico

      May 4, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

Brauch Energie und will meine Ruhe

Day 9 Belorado - Cardenuela Piopico

      May 5 in Spain ⋅ 🌬 16 °C

      35.8 km (270.7 km from start). 43.000 steps. 7 hours on the road. 2377 calories. 5.8 km/h

Great evening in Belorado. Best dinner until now: red beans soup (in Serbia - Pasulj), chicken from grill and chocolate mousse desert. Energy boost I really needed.

Early start, at 6.45am Perfect weather, not to cold, not to warm. Rain during the day but my gear is performing perfectly. Long part throughout woods, something I haven’t try that much.

No pain today, just a little bit at the end of the walk. I am enjoying my self and looking forward for another day, new places and more kilometers to complete.

Again walking alone. I need this, I enjoy solitude. Talked to my daughter today, talking to my wife every day. Not missing my day to day life - but I do miss my family ❤️

Staying at Santa Fe hostel. Private room with private bathroom. Luxury I haven’t tried before. It is ok but I definitely do not mind bunk beds and Camino spirit in hostels.

      63. Wandertag

      May 31, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

😅😎🥱☹️Read more

    • Day 21

      Burgos

      October 8, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

We had a relatively short uneventful walk into the city of Burgos this morning. Through a couple of small towns, with nothing open early Saturday morning.

There are several "Camino" routes routes into the city, we chose the slightly longer river path. It was very nice dirt path next to the river. But it quickly grew into another Pedestrian/Cycling super-highway. About 6 kms of parallel cycling and walking jogging paths. Really cool.

We got to the hotel too early, so we walked around old town a little bit. Saw a church just out side the city gate, which was preparing for a wedding. Listened to the musicians practicing.

      Kit abundance

      April 7 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

This morning a stupid mean dog ran across the road at me, growling and snapping and pushed me in the leg with its nose. I got very scared and a strange auuhhhhhh noise came out of me.

In compensation perhaps, I have broken an awful cat dry spell by spotting lots. One detour was very poorly marked and I missed it, finding myself in a spot I knew wasn't it and needing to back track. I was joined at this time by a gorgeous little kitten and we had a nice sit down together to make it all worthwhile.

Thank you kitz. Dumb dog, GO AWAY.

      September 26, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 63 °F

I'm exhausted, easily the hardest day physically that I've had. Mia was far ahead of me for most of the day. We climbed a mountain of pure rocks and my feet, knees, hips, everything hurts! We have a lovely room with 4 beds and a private bathroom so we're happy now. They have a swimming pool and the laundry is in the wash. I've got a pitcher of sangria for 5€ so it's all good.

      Day 14 - Cardeñuela Riopico -> Burgos

      May 15, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

After a long walk the day before, we have a shorter one ahead of us. Only 14 km to Burgos.
There's not much to see, just follow the road that goes through Orbaneja Riopico and then arrives in Burgos.
On the first part of the walk we met Pascal, my dear Camino friend, with whom I spent some days the week before. It was great to see him again. I felt very happy. We walked together to the entrance of Burgos, where we stopped for a coffee. We couldn't stay that long because he had to catch a train back to France in about 1 hour. It was time to say goodbye to this person who remains in my thoughts even after the end of my Camino. I must admit that I was touched by this moment.
After saying goodbye, we needed to walk a few more kilometers to the center of Burgos. And since we lost the detour along the river (the most pleasant one), we had to walk between large avenues and industrial areas.

Villafranca montes de Oca to Cardeñuela

      September 21, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Well this has been the hardest day yet. We left Villafranca in the blustery winds and we had an uphill hike for a few kilometers. Within the hour the driving rains came. Despite our rain gear we were wet and cold. There were no villages for 12km so nowhere to stop and get a reprieve. Eventually we made it to the next village and stopped for coffee and a sandwich. I was truly ready to take a taxi all the way to Santiago but reluctantly mustered up the mental strength to continue on for the next 12km to our albergue for the night. If not for Todd’s patience and continues support I would not have made it. Eventually the rain lightened up. We had a very remote and quiet walk. We hardly saw any pilgrims along the way.
We were very happy to arrive at our albergue where promptly showered, did laundry, rested and then had our pilgrim dinner. Our host must have felt sorry for us and she brought out shots for all of us after dinner. An impromptu karaoke happened after dinner with people singing drinking songs from their home countries
Dinner with France, Martinique, Brazil, Hong Kong

      Day 14: To Cardeñuela Riopoco

      May 25, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌬 63 °F

Today was a nice but challenging day. I started off about 8:00 this morning, left an apple from my pack for the horse, and then walked for about 6.5 hours (not counting lunch, visiting, etc. for a total of just over 30 kilometers or nearly 19 miles.) I really pushed a bit more than I have been, because I wanted to get close to Burgos so I will have time to explore the city tomorrow. I also splurged and actually booked a ‘real’ hotel for tomorrow night. The weather was nice today and one of my Camino family caught up with me, (Elena from Bulgaria) so we walked together for the first part of the day, then I walked with my Swedish friends Maria and Oso for the last part. As I’ve mentioned previously, I always tend to walk faster when I’m around others.
One thing I have been doing the past few days is carrying my entire backpack instead of getting a few pounds off my back by forwarding a daypack to the next destination. The majority of people don’t actually carry everything on their back that they need. Most just carry a day pack and there are services that will take your big pack to your next albergue for 6€. Since I prefer the feel of my ‘real backpack’, I’ve been sorta doing the reverse by carrying my backpack and forwarding a little daypack with dirty clothes, electronic cords etc. and saving a few pounds. It is nice getting rid of the extra pounds, but the downside is you must decide in advance where you are going to want to stop for the evening instead of letting your body decide. The reality is however, they say “we carry our fears” and one of my fears is that I will arrive in a village and there won’t be an available bed for me. So, I will probably continue to book a bed the evening before to know for sure. Tomorrow, Burgos.
