      Day 18 FromistaDay 19 CarrionDeLosCondes

      28. april, Spanien ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

On Day 18 we woke up to a surprise ascent that reminded us of the Pyrenees. A 26 km day that included a walk by the old canal into Fromista. Alot of churches have stork nests on their steeples, I've only seen that here in N.Spain.
Day 19 was a flat 20 km straight line day that had us checking into our church municipal hostel run by the Sisters of Charity - it will be a warm sleep as the sisters won't shut the heat at 10pm🙏

      Boadilla del Camino to Carrión

      2. maj, Spanien ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

Like life, not all parts of the journey are pretty. While the 24k today was relatively flat compared to the trail over the past few weeks, today we walked alongside a road for most of the day. Though chilly, we had high hopes of staying dry. All was good until our luck ran out about 2k from our destination and we were suddenly caught in an onslaught of hail and rain 🌧️ for about 10 minutes.Læs mere

Von fromista nach carrion de los condes.

      22. maj 2022, Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

      40k het is even wennen

      7. maj, Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 4 °C

Daar gingen mijn lunch plannen.
Zo komt mijn energie weer langzaam terug.
Morgen mag ik de lunch niet uitstellen. Dat is een feit.

      At Carrion de los Condes

      4. maj, Spanien ⋅ 🌬 18 °C

After climbing out of the enormous bed in last night’s hotel (I’m sure it could easily sleep 4!), we set out at about 8.30. And we are now staying at probably the best hotel of the trip tonight (though León will be similar), the hotel Monasterio San Zoilo, an ex monastery and almost like a parador. We’ve been here twice before and so were anticipating a lovely stay. All the hotels have been good, and very varied, but a few stand out.

It was a fairly easy walk, 20 kms and flat, and we took the more scenic route through the fields and by a river, the alternative being a track beside the road for 15 kms. And it was warmer today, with all the layers on it became almost too many, and just before we arrived Rach and I shed a layer…that just means comfortable….we weren’t shivering for ages afterwards like we were 2 days ago! But it was windy, and we arrived very windswept….but no rain! We are so lucky…

So despite being fairly flat it was very pleasant and brilliant green countryside, and many birds twittering and Rachel has an app that identifies birdsong! Such fun, we often hear nightingales which I’ve never consciously heard before, also cuckoos, warblers, and today the way was dotted with beautifully flowering tamarisks.

A highlight of this segment is a visit to a wonderful church - Santa Maria de la Blanca - a Templar church in a small town, Villalcazar de Sirga, about 5 kms before arriving at Carrion. It is a magnificent building and we enjoyed seeing it again…it closes for the afternoon at 1pm, so there is always that deadline as you walk, but we were in good time…

Had a beer and some croquetas in the bar here before we even checked in. Now relaxing and unwinding. Amr soaked his feet in the bidet just because he could…he is very proud of all the hat comments! We have dinner here at 8 or so and should be good.

      in Carrión de los Condes

      25. april 2023, Spanien ⋅ ☁️ 57 °F

Following my longest day, i had a short day - only about 13 miles. Still, i did not feel well, not just physically, but also unmotivated. I simply did not want to walk today. Walking 13 mi when there’s not even an ounce in you that wants to do it is nearly an unmatched mental challenge 😂. But now I am in Carrión (which is at the 400km mark i think), staying in a 4 star hotel that used to be a monastery that my mom booked for me saying it was her favorite stay on the Camino, so all is well. :) also in choosing my pics, i realized I didn’t take a lot today. I think I begrudgingly stomped my way here all 13 miles and forgot to enjoy it. 😅Læs mere

      Fazit der 11. Woche

      4. juni 2023, Spanien ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

      7. august 2022, Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

All albergues in Carrión have some connection with a church. The place is full of churches!
But this isn't like the parochial albergue I stayed at in Grañón, which had basic facilities and was by donation. This one has a set price, and it is very clean, spacious and comfortable inside.
I had read good reviews about it and I was coming straight here. Jan followed and is here too. Without having arranged it, Milka, Svenia and the Belgians also ended up in the same place, and Carol as well - plus other people I don't know.

Day 18: Fromista a Carrion de Los Camino

      17. maj 2022, Spanien ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

I’m up at 5.30 - and where is everyone? Tonight is the first night I do not have a reservation anywhere… so I am a little apprehensive. It seems I am not the only one with this idea! The day starts with a short 5k out of the town, and then I am at a fork in the road. Left takes you by the road, right by the river. So I start the day meandering by the river on a slightly longer route.

The sun rises and it truly is beautiful today - there are birds singing everywhere, and the sound of nature waking up. The sun rises over fields of grain (wheat? Barley? I still don’t know) and the walk by the river is peaceful. I am missing my morning coffee though, and I do not pass any towns on my morning walk. About halfway, I am following two other pilgrims and the signs down the river - but I check the map and I am about 2k off route! I panic slightly and curse the road markings before walking at a brisk pace to rejoin. I get to an Iglesia, Santa Maria in a town called villa Diego but of course nothing is yet open. But thankfully salvation does come in the form of cafe con leche and a racion of tortilla. I feel slightly more alive and continue on the way.

The day has gone by very fast today, I arrive at my destination at 10.30. I am searching out an albergue where I heard the nuns sing at 5.30 - I make a mistake and almost stay at the monastery. Before I correct my mistake a very grumpy hospitalero tells me they are full anyway. Quite a few surly hospitaleros on the route lately, is it something I said?

The town looks promising and there are things to do, once I find my albergue for the night I join a queue of bags and wait. And wait. The albergue opens at 12. I’m really glad to be in, showered and resting.

The town itself is very medieval, with cobbled stones and old buildings flanking either side. There are lots of cafes and shops and things to look at, and it makes a welcome change from the last few towns. I visit the churches and there is an exhibition about the Virgin Mary. I find the way her face is depicted through time fascinating, different ideals of beauty through the ages.

I try to work to Spanish time and have a couple hours drinking a coffee and having a snack before things reopen. When they do, it’s time for the singing nuns.

I join the nuns at around 6 - and they have got us all around in a circle. We each give our name and where we are from, and why we are doing the Camino. Someone next to me tells me they are walking the Camino because they have cancer and they want to come to terms with the end. I feel very emotional about this, and when the nuns sing I really do feel like crying. The lead nurse comes around with a small gift of a paper star that they paint every day, and blesses us on the forehead. I am taken aback by their kindness and their sense of peace - I wish I could find that within my own self!

Dinner tonight is with the lovely Jim, who reminds me a lot of Dad. 68 and a retired police officer, we share stories about our lives and chat over some typical Spanish tapas. Jim isn’t reserving any nights ahead - he is just going with the flow. I want to be more like Jim. He tells me that he loves the flanders poppies that you can see everywhere, and that he will plant some when he gets home. He pays for the whole meal, which was a kindness I was not expecting (In fact I was going to sneak away and do that myself!) We part ways and I feel overcome with emotion, perhaps a long day or perhaps the kindness or perhaps the homesickness.

Tomorrow another stretch through the fields awaits.

      Goodnight xx
