      Samos

      26. oktober 2022, Spania ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

We continued our walk down the Mountain to the town of Tricastela, then followed down the Rio Obibio, until we reached the small village of Samos. Samos has a huge Benedictine Monastery. I have a few shots here of the Monetary from up the hill and in town. Sue will have interior shots in her post.

Right before town the kilometer markers dropped below 130k to go!

Through Hamlets & Woodlands to Sarria

      27. oktober 2022, Spania ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

What a gift today's weather has been! Wore shorts & a t-shirt for the first time in a couple of weeks. Sunshine & blue sky was with us through our mostly woodland, rolling-hill walk to Sarria. There were several times we had to break out the rain ponchos for brief sprinkles, but then the sun returned. The temps were in the high 60's for most of the day.
Saw a farmer harvesting chestnuts with a cool rake, he posed for me. Saw lots of gardens with pumpkins & squash. Many farms with goats & chickens. There was a pretty unusual black-headed, white body goat we took a pic of. Also, got treated to 2 pretty cool rainbows!

      Day 32

      24. september 2022, Spania ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

This morning started unexpectedly damp!! A quick root through my bag to find my waterproof coat, extra long sleeved top and rucksack cover and off I eventually go…
Today’s walk wasn’t too far, so I opted to take the alternative scenic route despite it being about 7km further. A good decision, it was a very undulating day, through wooded tracks, trails and villages with very little on, or alongside the roads.
Due to this I met less people, quite nice as the route apparently becomes quite busy from Sarria to Compostela.
Once again I bumped into Alexander ( barefoot ) he commented that I’d passed him a few times and that he remembered me saying hello to him at the statue outside of O’Cebreiro yesterday. He then asked if I’d take a photo of him ( with his phone ) and offered to do the same for me..
On my arrival in Sarria, I met the three Irish ladies again, they had just finished.and we’re quite giddy. The stages between Leon and Sarria were all they had left to do having started it years ago.. they did the final section last time just in case anything happened to one of them so that they’d have their Camino certificates. They too asked me to take their picture and I asked if they’d mind if I took one of them .. they’re fabulous 🥰
The temperature has dramatically dropped this evening, fortunately I’ve found a fleece blanket under my bed, that is now definitely on top of it!!!
Off for dinner now.. I wonder what culinary delight awaits.. 😂

O Cebreiro to Lusio 28.9 km

      9. april, Spania ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

So it snowed more overnight. Christianne was nervous walking by herself and wanted to walk with me again. We headed out with our headlamps. It was a winter wonderland. I loved every step. Christianne is a "Drama Queen" and was exclaiming loudly when faced with a hill.

As we reached another summit it ended with a bar being open!
I ate a huge piece of tortilla Patata. I saved the rest and the huge slice of bread for later. I am so glad that I did in hindsight.

We parted ways as Christianne is always wanting to be on the go.....me not so much and wanted to take a break to take off excess clothing.

I arrived in Triacastela. Very touristy town. I went into the Supermercado and was told to leave my pack outside. I understand that however the woman was not friendly at all.

It was just 12:30 and I didn't have a good feel for the town to spend the night and decided to continue on.
It was a beautiful path by the river.

      Buen Camino 🤗

      The final chapter begins

      22. april, Spania ⋅ 🌙 41 °F

We began the day with a very cool walk along the highway in the dark and into a wonderful valley of farms and villages. Sadly, it seemed that each village was a remembrance of the past. Most buildings were for sale or abandoned. Mid morning, we reached Samos, and it's monestary from 700 AD. During our walk into Sarria, we joined a recent college grad from Florida and a Spanish grandfather who has walked many of the Caminos (more than 20 times). The vibe in Sarria was different as this is the jumping off point for those that want to complete the last 100k to Santiago. I miss our travel companions and who to meet others during our final week.Les mer

      Desperate for a toilet!

      20. august 2022, Spania ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

There were a few small villages between Samos and Sarria (the big town 4k before today's destination), but either they had no facilities at all, or they were closed.
I needed a toilet and was holding it, wishing for another village with an open bar around the next turn... and prepared to settle for a tall grass patch offering some privacy.
When I got to an accessible area with some trees and grasses, it was very hard to take position because of the berry bushes, which were full of thorns, so I desisted and kept walking a bit more.
Then I got to the place in the pictures. It was an albergue and cafe/restaurant, with 'open' signs but no one there. The cafe was clearly closed. The albergue door was unlocked. I stepped in and it was all dark and silent inside. I called 'Hola!' and looked around until I found the toilets. I was saved!
A hand written note inside the toilet door asked for a 50c donation to help with maintenance costs, and I gladly complied with the request.
Walking became much easier after that!

      Day 35 - To Biduedo

      13. oktober 2022, Spania ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

      Day 35 - To Biduedo
      24 kms; Difficulty
      20-21°C

Today was the final BIG ascent! Glad that’s behind me. It was pretty darn tough in spots. But there was also a few short trails through the bush which were very pretty. The payoff for the hard work of ascending is the beautiful views!

      The countdown begins!
I will be in Santiago in
6 days. I have 640 km behind me, 160 to go. And I have to say I’m looking forward to it. The trail, as beautiful and amazing as it is, is tough. It causes a lot of wear and tear on the body and the soul. And I’m getting tired! ❤️
The last three pictures are where I’m staying tonight. Casa Quiroga in Biduedo. Population 31!
      Very foggy tonight!!

      Bienvenido a Galicia...

      Bienvenido a Galicia...
