  • Cenote Chaak Tun

    June 18, 2015 in Mexico ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

After some serious googling of local attractions - Suki convinces us to visit Cenote Chaak Tun. Its a short 10 min taxi ride from town. Tripadvisor recommends that we arrive after 1pm to avoid the large tour groups at peak time. Its pretty expensive at 360 pesos ($32) each for the entrance fee but it includes a guide, waterproof flashlight, wetsuit, snorkel and reef shoes.

We get a quick intro from our guide Ricardo and he explains that everyone must wear a life jacket etc - this all changes however when he realises that most of the lifejackets are gone. Ricardo looks at us 3 and says 'you guys can swim yeah?..... You dont need life jackets"

We enter the first cave by waking down steps into a narrow walkway wedged between the cave walls. We slowly lower ourselves into the cristal clear but ice cold water. Ricardo teaches us about the history of the caves and explains how the stalimites (icicle looking rock things) are formed. The tour last about 90 minutes as we swim through different caves and rock formations. The walls of the cave are just as interesting below the water. Little bats hang from the ceiling in certain spots which really adds to the eeriness of this place. Towards the end the guide tells Trav and Suki to swim through of one the tunnels - its pretty small and you have to dispel most of your air from your lungs to be able to swim downwards into the tunnel before taking a sharp left turn - crazy.

Great day - taxis try to rip you off heading back into town so Trav flags down a ute and we hitch a ride back.

  • Coco Bongo

    June 18, 2015 in Mexico ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

It took a bit of convincing all round but we decided to listen to the hype and buy tickets to the infamous Coco Bongo show that's held every night at Playa Del Carmen and Cancun.

Tickets are USD$55 each with an open bar and free t-shirt. Doors open at 10pm and we get swarmed with drinks and shots before we even finish walking through the hallway to get to the ballroom.

We arrived pretty early (after chomping down pizza) and have a good spot on one of the tiers. The waiters are almost begging us to down more booze. It's still 1.5 hours before the show kicks off but the atmosphere is already pumping. A dwarf dressed as 'the mask' is dancing on the lower stage surrounded by ladies.

It's showtime and the performances all live up to the hype! Numerous shows including Madonna, MJ, Lou Bega, Phantom of the Opera, Batman, Tron, Beyoncé and others entertain the crowd. Inbetween the shows its turns into a nightclub and the drinks keep on flowing.

It's 3am and time to head back to our hotel after another feed of pizza and ice cream. Well done Coco Bongo - you impressed us

  • Bacalar & Laguna Milagros

    June 21, 2015 in Mexico ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

Continuing south from Playa De Carmen we head to Bacalar (famous for its 7 colour lake). The bus stop and surrounding buildings look like a scene out of Mad Max. We stay at Casa China which turned out to be better than we expected. The majority of the town is built on the edge of the lake.

The next morning we hire kayaks and explore part of the lake. The water is pristine and the colour is constantly changing due to the varied depth and cenotès underneath. There's a stop at one of the islands for a snack then Wei (the Asian dolphin) decides to swim back to shore.

We decide to stroll into town and on the way we stop by at a local bar for a refreshing beer and listen to some ear bleeding music performed by some stoned ex-pat local's.

Later on we had into the town square (which is a remarkable contrast to the bus stop we arrived at) and witness crowds of people gathering round after the Bacalar Swim Comp which allegedly had 1000 participants earlier that day.

It's time to call it another day as we had back to the hostel to brace the invasion of mosquitoes and 400% humidity.

Next stop is Laguna Milagros based on a place Trav found on airbnb. The place is owned and run by Gringo Dave and features 5 cabanas on the lake. It's not as cool as its looks on the net and the outdoor kitchen is manky. The cabana has 2 bedroom with a big deck and isn't too bad. The beds both hang from the ceiling which is a nice touch providing you don't get seasick. We had to almost beg Gringo Dave for another fan so that we didn't dehydrate from humidity through the night.

Trav and Wei embark on another long distance swim to the platform in the middle of the lake.

  • Goodbye Wei! (see u later Mexico..)

    June 22, 2015 in Mexico ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

The time has come to say goodbye to a key member of "Team Stink" as we head to Chetumal and go our separate ways. Wei has to head back to Cancun for her flight to Canada whereas Trav and Suki are going somewhere in Belize (still havent decided where at this point). We have our last meal of cheap 70c tacos and say our goodbyes at the bus station... Thanks Wei, its been so much fun! We will miss your smelly shoes and inability to swim underwater :-)

Last minute decision we decide to get the ferry to Caye Caulker... Belize here we come!

  • Caye Caulker ("You better Belize it!")

    June 22, 2015 in Belize ⋅ 🌙 27 °C

We head to the port and jump on the ferry to Caye Caulker.. Caye Caulker is one of the tiny islands off the coast of Belize, famous for its diving, snorkeling and general lazing around.

We weren't really sure what to expect from Belize. All we knew prior to coming here is that it is a tiny country, the only central American country that speaks English (win) and that it is relatively expensive (boo). And that it has the second largest coral reef in the world.. second to Australia of course!

We hop on the island (its very breezy and has a nice islandy feel) and soon discover that Belize is an eclectic mix of all races.. black/ Rastafarian people (many selling weed), olive skinned locals, white expats and locals, and also Asians (running the mini marts). Everyone talks to you and pretty much everyone is trying to sell you something. Many people seem genuinely nice and others are a bit pushy, borderline rude. Basically all sorts!

We are hustled by a local guy called Jamie offering to help us find accomodation as soon as we get off the ferry. Turned out he was pretty legit (despite our skepticism) and got us a good deal at his uncle's house.

Lobster season began last weekend so the restaurants are serving whole lobster for $10usd! Suki is super happy :-)

  • Bad weather..

    June 24, 2015 in Belize ⋅ 🌧 27 °C

We spend our first full day in Caye Caulker exploring the island (3 quaint streets) and figuring out what activities we want to do. Suki beats Trav in the sack throwing game at the bar to Travs surprise and disgust :-)

After a bit of umming and ahhing Suki books in for a full day dive of the famous blue hole the next day. Trav decides to give it a miss just in case his ears play up. We also planned to do a snorkel trip that afternoon however on the way to the legitimate, well rated establishment, we get intercepted by a Rastafarian guy on the side of road. He tries to sell us an alternative trip (and/ or weed). We get lured in by his promise of spearfishing and lots of fresh fish so put a deposit down for a trip on Thursday. His credibility starts decreasing over the day though as we see him hustle people and try to sell food (lobster tails).

Bad news though when we find out the dive has been cancelled due to bad weather. We wake the next morning to high winds and torrential rains.. and its doesn't look like its going to improve until Saturday :-( We decide to cut our losses and high tail out of there.. the rain subsides and we catch the next ferry outta there... Off to San Ignacio!

  • San Ignacio

    June 24, 2015 in Belize ⋅ 🌧 23 °C

The ferry docks at Belize City and during the 15 min walk to the bus station we think we've seen enough. Not sure if this is the shady part of town or if its all like this but it looks dodge and the taxi drivers are pushy and rude! Fortunately the bus arrives immediately and we are off to San Ignacio.

On the bus and once we arrive its nice people galore! So refreshing. We find a nice cheap hotel (Abraham is awesome!) and head to the local, "Bamboo Bar" for some much needed drinks.. its a tiny little place and there we meet and chat to more friendly locals and Conrad, our awesome bartender.

Chinese takeaway for dinner and we are crossing our fingers we'll get to go to the famous ATM cave tomorrow!

  • The cave is closed :-(

    June 25, 2015 in Belize ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

We wake up in excitement and anticipation for our trip through the Aktun Tunichil Muknil Cave today.. its a 10 hour adventure through an old Mayan cave, where the Mayans used to perform blood letting rituals. Its meant to be amazing!

But Alas, the cave is closed due to the recent heavy rains. Our guide Carlos is confident it will reopen tomorrow so we spent the day at some nearby Mayan ruins (forgot the name, starts with an X!).

Luck is not on our side as we find out the next day the cave is still closed :-( We cut our loses once again and head south to Placencia!

  • Placencia

    June 26, 2015 in Belize ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Back on the chicken buses today where we discover what the Belizian etiquette is with regards to queing- 1. Seniors go first. 2. A complete free for all where everyone pushes you, mothers and children out of the way. The bus is packed and we somehow end up at the back of the queue, the bus attendant doesnt let us on, "Bus full, wait for the next one (in an hour!)" except as soon as we get off 3 more people hop on! Oi! Eventually he feels sorry for us because we have a connecting bus to catch, so crams us on and insists we sit down.. we squish in 3 to each bench seat. 2 minutes down the road apparently standing is ok again and they stop to let more people on the bus!

Anyhoo, we make it to Placencia eventually and its very nice.. its set right on the beach and has a much more local feel than Caye Caulker. Trav has found us an amazing airbnb place and we have the whole house to ourselves! Homemade shrimp linguine for dinner :-)

Sunny day tomorrow for our snorkeling trip please!

  • Laughing Bird Caye

    June 27, 2015 in Belize ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

The sun is shining when we wake up (finally!) and we head to the pier for our snorkeling trip at Silk Caye. Silk caye forms part of the barrier reef and we were promised sightings of manta rays and sharks.

Alas the seas are too rough so a change of plans and we head to the closer Laughing Bird Caye instead. Once on the boat we can see why.. its a bumpy trip out! Suki somehow ended up in the worst seat and gets drenched.

We spent a nice day on the Caye snorkeling and pigging out on the delicious barbeque chicken and cheesy potato meal Tipa cooks for us. The snorkeling is not as good as we had hoped but we do see some giant lobsters and 4 big baracuda.

Finally back in Cancun! Check in to our hostel and Hector is super nice, one of our favourite people in Mexico!

Its boiling hot so we head down to the hotel zone to check out the beach... Disappointment once again! Seaweed galore. Not too impressed with the area in general, pretty much full of mega resorts and tacky looking nightclubs.. we were told Cancun isn't great but had to see it for ourselves!

We head back downtown for our last night of cheap eats.. $2.50 burrito and $3 Mexican stew. Yummo :-)

  • Isla Mujeres Catamaran Trip

    June 30, 2015 in Mexico ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

On our last day in Cancun we decide to take the Catamaran trip that "team stink" had planned on doing but didn't get around to. An all you can drink affair, full day boat trip complete with snorkeling at the underwater museum, buffet lunch at Isla Mujeres (a popular island off the coast of Cancun.. Johnny Depp has a holiday home here!), exploring the island and a Spinaker ride off the catamaran.. looks a bit like parasailing.

Won't go into the details but it didn't live up to the hype.. once again way too many people (50 of us!) and it was a pretty hot day. The water was beautifully clear for the snorkelling though.

Lowlight of the day was when we got to the island and there was another "attraction"- 2 depressed looking nurse sharks held captive in a 3 x 3m pen forced to take photos with the tourists for money.. they fed us some story about how it was for shark conservation. We didn't buy it.

Back to Cancun and off to the airport hotel.. ready for our early 6am flight to Kansas City tomorrow!

  • New Orleans (NOLA)

    July 3, 2015 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

It's time to party! After another long day of multiple flights and buses we arrive in NOLA (New Orleans, Louisiana).

We're staying about a 15min walk from the French Quarter in the Seventh Ward. It's a lot more 'authentic' then we expected as we cautiously walk through the majority Africa American neighborhood to our airbnb place! It's pouring down rain and it's takes a while to get a hold of our host. Dhileep and Emily arrive late after flying in from Vancouver and are perplexed as to why we are staying in the Ghetto........

The accomodation is what they call a shotgun apartment. A very narrow apartment with 1 row of rooms throughout. Our room is at the front followed by a utility room, the hosts bedroom (separated by sheets hanging from the roof), another airbnb room, the kitchen and then the bathroom. It's a very weird setup having to walk through a makeshift corridor (demarcated with sheets) just to get to the bathroom. Our hosts are weird and act like hermits so we don't see them much.

    Day 1
We hungrily stroll into the French quarter and make the mistake of stopping at the first Po Boy joint (popular over stuffed sub) we see. We started saying hello to all the locals in our district and suddenly realized how stereotypical we had become. Everyone was so friendly and all of a sudden we felt welcomed to be in this neighborhood.

Suki signed us up for a walking tour which was way too informative for the blistering heat and humidity - so we all agreed to bail and had cocktaiks on Bourbon st before returning home to drink beer all arvo. We make friends with Erin (the other airbnb guest) and she plays some live music with a guitar we found in the house as we manage to drink all the beers in the fridge.

It's time for dinner and we're ready to go after researching all the fancy restaurants. The French Quarter is alive and starting to look like a street festival so it's time for a round of the infamous 'Hand Granedes' (1L cocktails in a grenade shaped plastic yard glass). It's worth noting that one of the perks NOLA is the ability to legally drink in the street! The hand grenades certainly did their magic and our ambitions of eating over priced ribs in an expensive hotel are unanimously substituted for take away monster pizza slices and chicken wings. Another hand grenade and we decide to head home. It's only 1030pm but feels like we've been awake for days.

    Day 2
Slow start with minor hangovers, we went for another stroll into town for brunch at a place called the Rose Piroud. The food is incredible and we got the eggs benny with alligator sausage. Later that arvo we had a stuffed seafood and sweet 'bignets' (donut shaped pastries) before we went on a swamp tour (see our separate blog).

Got back to town at 7pm and went to the Royal Oyster Bar and had a New Orleans tasting plate showing case the creole highlights of jimbolaya and gumbo with a side of a half dozen oysters. The booze kept on flowing and we walked over to Marigny district and checked out the nightlife in Frenchman St popping into a few different jazz. Def a much better place for nightlife then the crowded drunken French quarter! Suki demanded fried chicken so we walked all the way back to Bourbon St.

    Day 3
Another slow start. Got a cab to the posh 'garden district' and had a nice brunch at Coulis then walked around checking out the fancy mansions and the cemetery. A quick afternoon nap was required to get ready to celebrate 4th July.

We wonder back to the French quarter expecting mayhem but it's almost dead. We crowd alongside the Mississippi River and watch the fireworks. The vibe just isn't alive as we try to find some busy bars with live music. 1L frozen margaritas all round as we slowly wonder back home.

Time has flown the last few days as we say goodbye so Dhilleep, Emily and our new friend Erin. It's the end of another adventure for Team Brown. #TB

  • Swamp Tour

    July 3, 2015 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 33 °C

With a recommendation from a friend, Dhilleep convinced that we had to do the 'swamp tour' in the Bayou river. With low expectations we jumped on a bus and headed on a 1 hour trip outside of town. We arrived and the info centre and were amazed to see a Albino alligator! These white chocolate looking reptiles are only ever raised in captivity due to inability to camoflague from predators, poor eyesight and the fact they get sunburnt haha

It's time to board the pontoon boat and we meet our redneck captain Louis who has spent his whole life living here and hanging out with alligators. We slowly cruise down the river and onto to offshoots to track them down. We come to a little bay and Louis throws marshmallows all around the boat whilst making his gator call 'errrrrr yup yup yup'. Instantly a few gators start approaching the boat. The marshmallows are the perfect snack to attract the gators due to the vibrations they make when the hit and float of the surface of the water and the white colour.

Further down the river we bank against a small island and Loius does his famous gator call and jumps off the boat (armed only with a knife) into the island and to our surprise hand feeds the gators raw sausages.

It's time to head back and along the way Louis pulls out two tiny baby gators that were in a bucket in the back of the boat and hands then round for everyone to hold - best pet ever!

Back on the bus and it's time to head back to the city. What an awesome afternoon and brilliant tour!

  • We're in Kaaansas!!

    July 5, 2015 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 28 °C

That's right, Kansas! Why, we get asked a lot... We're here to visit Suki's friend Mary Ann, who she met when she went volunteering in Peru.. 8 years ago! Mary Ann and her husband Richard live on a farm 4 hours out of Kansas City. So its a long travel day, travelling from New Orleans to Dallas then Kansas City. Mary Ann picks us up and we stop for a quick bite at Lone Star (the waitress comments on our strange accent). Its midnight by the time we get to the farm (a beautiful family home built in 1886!), we meet 3 of the dogs and settle in for the night.Read more

  • Farm Life Day 1 - Exploring

    July 6, 2015 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

A nice lie in today as we settle into life on the farm. We wake up and meet Richard as well as the 4 dogs: Strike- a giant black lab, Molly- a gentle golden lab, Chika - a minature australian shepherd and Gustauff - the little sausage dog. Quite a bunch! There's also 8 cats.. too many to name them all!

Mary Ann shows us around the farm and we are completely blown away! Mary Ann's daughter Tanya runs an annual autumn festival at the farm every October, complete with pumpkin patch, a corn maze, candy store, gift store, train ride through scarecrow alley, straw jump, nature trail and music festival. Its amazing!! We go for a cruise on the Ranger (the 4WD buggy) down to their private pond. All the dogs jump in so its a fun ride for everyone! Down at the pond there's a little cabin with a fridge full of cold beers! Very handy :-)

The farm is huge! 160 acres! We drive through some of the pastures, corn, wheat, milo (a type of grain, not the chocolate drink so I was informed) and soy beans.. keeping an eye out for deer, wild turkey and rabbits. Oh and there's a hot tub on the back porch of the house too :-)

We settle in to a delicious home cooked meal by Richard on the back porch and soak up the beautiful weather and fresh air. A movie night to end the day with some freshly baked cinnamon scrolls.. I think we're going to love it here :-)

  • Farm Life Day 2 - Down to business

    July 7, 2015 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 19 °C

Keen to earn our keep on the farm we draw up a list of things to help out with.. first job, pruning the trees along the long driveway leading up to the house. We move some hay bales and attach the trailer to the Ranger and get to work. Trav gets a bit carried away and starts sawing away branches the size of tree trunks.

Not all work and no play though, off to town for lunch at the local bar (the only bar)... Delicious burgers and some very tasty onion rings! A quick detour to Mary Ann and Richards place in town, where we check out Richards impressive car collection, including an off-road Volkswagen buggy, a convertible VW beetle, a Cadellac and a Corvette! Trav is in car heaven.

Back to the farm for a bit more pruning, before taking the dogs down to the pond for a swim. Strike the giant lab refuses to sit at the back of Ranger so we squeeze all 4 dogs plus both of us at the front. We spot a deer on the way and need to hold Chika and Gustauff back from leaping out of the Ranger in full chase! They find some more deer to chase later so they're happy.

Home for another delicious home cooked meal and lots of wine.. life is pretty good here!

  • Farm Life Day 3 - Shooting some guns!

    July 8, 2015 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 19 °C

We finish pruning the driveway in the morning so the afternoon is free for some fun time... Shooting some guns! Suki had jokingly said she'd like to shoot some guns (seemed like a Kansasy thing to do) but little did she know that Richard actually owns a large collection of guns... Mary Ann herself owns 5 guns!

Richards friend drops off a nifty little target he made for us to shoot at. We have a go at 2 different rifles and a hand gun (all with 22mm bullets). Takes a little practice but Suki eventually gets the hang of it and really enjoys shooting the rifles!

Next the clay pigeon thrower gets set up and the shotgun is put in action.. so much fun! We both get the hang of it pretty quickly and hitting the clay pigeons is not as difficult as Suki expected :-)

Suki cooks dinner tonight, thai green chicken curry and rice, everyone is hungry so its a hit.

We end the night with a soak in the hot tub under the stars :-)

  • Farm Life Day 4 - Fly a Plane!!

    July 9, 2015 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Big day today as we knock off a few little jobs in the morning and set off on a little road trip to see some sights around the nearby towns.
First stop down to some of the oil wells Richard and Mary Ann own. They explain how the whole process works which is pretty interesting. Then off to grab some smoked sausage and cheese snacks from the oldest butcher in Lucas, a quaint little store that's been handed down through 3 generations. Just so happens the 2nd best toilet in all of USA is right next door... Its a toilet building shaped like a toilet... Quite a random attraction but its actually very artistic and well done! Next stop we're off to Lake Wilson for a scenic drive, its a huge lake, stretching approximately 10 miles. We pass through lots of green and yellow pastures and rolling hills all around. Then on past another random attraction in Wilson.. the USAs largest Czech egg.. apparently a very large Czech population lives around here.. the egg is not as impressive as the toilet :-)

We're back at the farm in the early evening and we head over to the neighbour Toms place for a little scenic joy ride on his 2 seater plane! Tom is a bit of a character.. when Richard told him he had visitors from Australia over, his first question was "Do they speak English?" After speaking to Travis he's still not convinced we speak English lol

What an experience! Tom is actually a pilot instructor and he does an excellent job explaining all the controls on the plane dashboard. Travis gets in first for his ride. Its an awesome ride as we take the plane over the lake and all through the countryside. Tom puts the plane in freefall and max side acceleration to demonstrate what 0 and 2g gravity feels like!

Sukis turn next and once in the air Tom lets Suki take the controls and fly the plane! (We find out later only Suki got to do this.. Trav is not impressed :-P ) Definitely one of the highlights of our trip so far!

Not to be outdone by Richards guns, we wrap the evening up by shooting Toms big 357 rifle from his porch out to a nearby tree. When in Kansas!

  • Farm Life Day 5 - Relaxing

    July 10, 2015 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 25 °C

Our last full day on the farm so we decide to have a relaxing day, starting with the sleep in we've become accustomed to. Maryann cooks us a hearty brunch of bacon, sausage, eggs and waffles. Trav decides we need to get a waffle maker when we get home.

We take the dogs out on the Ranger to the pond for the last time. Strike squashes everyone as usual on the trip down but we finally managed to convince him to sit in the back on the way back- success! We spend a relaxing afternoon watching the dogs swim in the pond, take the paddle boat out, drink some beers and lie in the shade. Bliss :-) The highlight was when the cows appeared by the fenceline and watching Chika instinctively run in and herd them. The cows are huge and Chika is tiny. 2 of the cows try to retaliate but Chika puts them in their place - good work Chika! (she is officially our favourite)

Back to the house and we're spoiled once again with a delicious home cooked meal. We end the night with a trip to the drive in cinemas, watching "Minions" and the new Jurassic Park movie. Not great movies but still loads of fun.

  • The Big Apple! (day 1 and 2)

    July 19, 2015 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

New York New York! We had heard so many great things about this infamous city. Trav has been before but its Sukis first time. We have 4 days to check it out and realise there is loads and loads to do!

We stay in an airbnb on the upper east side of Manhattan so pretty convenient. We manage to knock off quite a few sights and activities in the first 2 days, including:
    - Chelsea markets: famous mainly for food. We went to the lobster place and omg some of the best fresh oysters we've ever had! Washed down with some delicious lobster bisque, oyster po boy and pint of beer. Yum yum :-)
    - Century 21: Discount designer brand mall and Suki nabs a pair of denim shorts for $13! (Amie u could spend hours here!)
    - 9/ 11 memorial and museum. We werent planning on going to the museum but glad we did: very interesting but very very sad. We spent 3.5hours in there!
    - Walk across Brooklyn Bridge followed by dinner in Brooklyn: very iconic thing to do and great views.
    - Wander around central park and check out the roof garden at the MET which has great views over central park. Recommended entry is $25 but we only paid $1 each so pretty stoked about that! (you can actually pay whatever u want which isn't really advertised)
    - The obligatory New York pizza by the slice was eaten and enjoyed :-)

Long days and lots of walking in this big city!
