      Next it was time to go to the tower! There is so much extensive history here with Tower being an old Norman fortress! The tower has been a palace, prison, community, and church over the years! It boasts Englands crown jewels & has hosted some of Englands most iconic figures from kings, to beheaded queens, political figures, & a whole lot more! Definitely recommend a stop here! Plus you’re close to and get a good view of tower bridge (not london bridge) which is cool in its own right!!Read more

      London: The South Bank

      During the second half of our walking tour, we took a walk along the south bank of the River Thames. After exploring the sites, we enjoyed a delicious dinner at a historical pub of beef pie, fish and chips, and a pint of local ale.Read more

      Museum Frome

      Another walkabout in Frome took me to the museum, housed in a quirky building with a round front...and elongated...not sure how old it is but it's a listed heritage building. Remains and artefacts going back to Roman times are on display alongside a dispensary from the early 1900s (1832, I believe)... So amazing to walk in the footsteps of ancestors who helped build the foundations of modern society.

      Hunger struck me around mid morning so off I went in search of a vegan breakfast/brunch and came across the "Archangel" this building dated back to the1300s!! I'm just amazed these buildings stand the test of time although this one has been completely refurbished this century.. I'm definitely going back to take more photos of the interior. I loved it full off wee nooks and crannies inside. bliss!! 😂      Read more

      Bath and Bradford on Avon

      Yesterday I sojourned to Trowbridge to fill up my phone data (no shop in frome!) ... and once there the young salesman suggested I get on a train and go one stop to Bradford on Avon. I did as I was instructed and thoroughly enjoyed my time there visiting the medievil "Thithe Barn" and then the Saxon Church (St. Lawrence) on the hill. Both date back 7 - 800 years to the 12th and 13th centuries.

      I then visited the "Shambles" where I did some browsing and buying of a few wee things...as I got off the train, it was raining quite heavily and I had no clue where I was going so stopped at what I thought was a bus stop and asked the elders there where I oughtn't to miss visiting here in Bradford on Avon.

      They both said in unison, "the Tithing Barn" a medievil barn, and then on to the Saxon Church on the hill (past St Margaret's car park and over the bridge) people are amazing even when you tell them you have no idea where you are, they still insist on saying stuff like "you know where such and such is?" ...haha!!! I just smile and tell them again I have no idea where I am or where I'm going. I think they all think I'm a bit mad! Perhaps I am, but just moving as the spirit takes me.

      After the "Tithing Barn" I couldn't make head nor tail of the instructions the elders had given me. They weren;t waiting for a bus either. it turned out this was a waiting place between the doctors surgery and the pharmacy and the queue at the pharmacy was out the door and round the corner!! I felt sorry for them. As I wandered along the path by the river I stopped a couple of school girls (teens) and asked them if they knew the way to the Saxon Church, bless them, they walked me to the pathway and sent me on my way.

      About two minutes later they came back to me and suggested they take me all the way there. I was concerned and told them I could find my way from there, but they insisted. And just as well they did as the way was quite convoluted. They finally let me go just at the bottom of the hill.

      I sat awhile in the kirk contemplating the people who initially built the church and then the people who have helped restore it. Why do we keep holding on to past glories? What drives us to seek restoration, to hold onto that which was?

      St. Dunstan in the East

      A church was first built on the site of this garden in Saxon times. It was restored by St Dunstan in 950 AD and then rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren after the Great Fire in 1697. Only the tower of the Wren church survives. The garden was laid out following severe damage to the church in the blitz, and opened as a public space in 1967.Read more

      Es geht weiter nach London

      Thema Nr.1: Was machen wir jetzt ohne Kennzeichen. Als erstes versuche ich die Polizei im nächsten Ort anzurufen, da geht nur das Band dran und ich komme nicht durch. Zweiter Versuch der Online Chat der Police Kent. Nach wenigen Minuten kriege ich eine Antwort: "Ich sollte mir doch ein neues Kennzeichen in der nächsten Werkstatt drucken lassen. Bis dahin darf das Auto nicht fahren."
      Okay nächster Schritt also Werkstatt finden und dort nachfragen. Wir finden 900 m weiter eine Werkstatt, verstehen leider relativ wenig am Telefon (der englische Akzent und das Rauschen des Telefons ist keine gute Kombi) und fahren (verbotener Weise) daher nach einem schnellen Frühstück den einen Kilometer zur Werkstatt. Nach kurzer Wartezeit kommt der Chef bei uns vorbei und wir erklären ihm unser Problem. Er ist so nett und whatsappt, telefoniert und fragt woanders nach, welche Möglichkeiten es jetzt für uns gibt.
      Nach 10 Minuten kommt er mit einem alten weißen Karton, Schere, schwarzem Filzstift und Klebeband aus der Werkstatt zurück.
      Er erklärt uns, dass es keine Möglichkeit gibt, ein so ähnlich aussehendes deutsches Kennnzeichen zu drucken
      ... und die Polizei müsste das wissen, also wäre sie schön blöd uns anzuhalten.
      Okay wenn er das sagt 😅
      Also male ich in bester Schönschrift ein neues Pappkennzeichen und der Chef klebt es mit uns auf.
      Er bittet uns kurz zu warten und kommt wieder mit einem Stück Klebeband und einem weiteren Stück Karton (für ein weiteres Schild, man weiß ja nie) und wünscht uns eine schöne Weiterreise.
      Was haben wir für ein Glück eine so lockere und nette Werkstatt hier gefunden zu haben. 😁

      Also fahren wir halb lachend, halb fassungslos, dass das jetzt die Lösung ist, wieder zurück zum Campingplatz, packen ein und fahren zu unserem geplanten nächsten Stop: London.

      Nach einer Stunde Fahrzeit, davon 20 Minuten durch die äußersten Bezirke von London (wieder einmal ein ganz neues Fahrerlebnis) kommen wir auf einem grünen Campingplatz mitten in der Stadt an.

      Um 16 Uhr machen wir uns auf den Weg zum berühmten roten Londoner Doppelstockbus, um in die Innenstadt zu fahren. 30 Minuten Bus, 20 Minuten Londoner Underground (U-Bahn) und wir kommen in Camdon Town an. Oh man ist hier viel los, dass sind wir gar nicht mehr gewöhnt.
      Wir kommen an vielen verschiedenen Läden vorbei und gehen ein Stück entlang eines kleinen Flusses, wo wir ein kleines Hausboot beim Schleusen zusehen.
      Nach einer leckeren Abendessenspause fahren wir wieder mit der U-Bahn Richtung Campingplatz. Auf dem Weg merken wir, dass wir direkt neben der Towerbridge entlang fahren und entscheiden uns spontan, hier noch auszusteigen und einen Abendspaziergang bei Sonnenuntergang zu machen.

      Millwall

      Ich habe mir im Vorfeld überlegt, mir ein Fußballstadion anzusehen. Zumindest von außen. Auf die EURO2022, die aktuell in England läuft, hatte ich keine Lust. Ebenfalls keine Lust hatte ich auf einen dieser sterilen Tempel wie das Wembley-Stadion oder das Emirates Stadium. Daher hatte ich mir überlegt, nach Millwall zu fahren.

      Und ich wollte in London mich mindestens einmal per U-Bahn, per Taxi und per Doppeldecker-Bus fortbewegen. Und Fish&Chips essen. Das ich das alles mit einem Tripp nach Millwall bekomme, war nicht abzusehen.

      Also per "Tube" zur Station London Bridge. Ich finde es schlau, dass die U-Bahn Linien in London Namen und Farben haben und nicht Nummern und Farben wie in Hamburg. Lieber HVV: das wäre doch was. Ich finde es sehr viel einfacher, sich zu merken, dass die Circle-Line oder die Northern-Line zu nehmen ist, als die U2 oder die U3, die Gelbe oder die Rote.

      Von dort dann per Taxi nach Millwall und Stadion ansehen. Leider waren Filmaufnahmen drinnen Daher gab es keine Möglichkeit, in das Stadion zu gelangen. Aber durch glückliche Fügung und einen absolut netten Menschen durfte ich INS STADION. Nur den Rasen nicht betreten. WAHNSINN. Ich war im TheDen, ohne mich anzumelden oder eine offizielle Tour zu machen. Ganz alleine.

      Wo ich schon mal da bin, kann ich ja gleich Fish&Chips von der Bucketlist nehmen. Ab ins Millwall Café gegenüber. Nein, Fisch hätten sie erst morgen wieder, aber sie könnten mir auch Scampi in die Fritteuse werfen. Was soll's, hinein in den Magen. Wird schon schiefgehen...hoffentlich. Hat auch gar nicht nach Scampi geschmeckt, es war halt irgendwas Frittiertes in Panade. Aber das ganze Café mit Millwall-Historie ausgestattet. Das muss für Millwall-Fans der Tempel sein. Heute war aber niemand da.

      Dann zu Fuß zurück in Richtung London Bridge. Spannend, den Stadtteil weitab der City aus nächster Nähe zu sehen. Es soll einer der ärmeren Stadtteile sein. Dazu kann ich mir kein Urteil erlauben. Was ich aber sagen kann: je dichter es an die City ging, desto höher die Gebäude. In Millwall noch zweistöckig, bald schon dreistöckig. Und so weiter.

      Irgendwann hatte ich keine Lust mehr zu laufen. Ab in den Bus. Doppeldecker, oben und ganz sitzen. Scheint der Touristenplatz zu sein. Die für mich als einheimisch Identifizierten sind alle unten geblieben.

      Was aber auch gilt: in Tube und Bus - kein Bargeld. Einfach die Kreditkarte vorhalten und durchgehen. Das scheint übrigens auch mit meiner PIN-losen Kreditkarte zu funktionieren. Dies ist erstaunlich fortschrittlich und komportabel.      Read more
