      NYC #2 Statue of Liberty

      Apparently viewing The Statue Of Liberty is free, being a gift from the French and a symbol of freedom and the rest of it but they must have got the Toll Road guys in to work out how to squeeze the punter without going against the spirit of everything that Liberty symbolises.
      How this works is the only way on to Liberty Island is by official ferries and they charge you a fare for this so the cost is supposedly just for the transport over and return.

      But I noticed a disparity here so what I asked them was how come the lowest fare is just to get to the island. A higher fare is charged to enter the Pedestal and a much higher fare applies to enter the Crown, that’s for folks who go right up the top and stick their heads out of Liberties crown but this section is booked out until 2020.

      So my rationale is, they are charging for the viewing, it’s plain and simple the more you want to view the more they charge.
      I would have taken this a lot further but Rhonda said something about me and ruffling feathers and something about her being sick of it, I’m not sure I was too busy sending off a furious email to the American National Parks Association demanding to be reimbursed for our Pedestal admission.

      I was on a good roll too being inspired by the statue herself with all that righteousness and the “for the people by the people”stuff.
      The Statue of Liberty certainly does this flag waving and freedom for all stuff well starting with the sheer scale, I think it may still be the largest sculpture of that type in the world, if not it should be because it is one powerful piece of art and a more impressive thing is that they created and erected her in the 1880’s, and the size of some of the construction is on Egyptian Pyramid scale.
      Like our Opera House the position out in the harbour, at the entrance to New York City adds to the power of the piece, anywhere else it could get lost amongst the skyscrapers of Manhattan but instead those buildings become a backdrop for Liberty.

      The experience so far of NYC is, we suggest that any of you who never want to visit any cities in the world or are turned off by what they’ve heard about this place should make an exception, just once and try a trip to New York.      Read more

      Absolutely stunning 🤩 Finally got to visit the Statue of Liberty 🗽 in person. We first went to Bowling Green Subway Station and took a boat from the park there. The $24.8 ticket was value-for-money.

      In the Crown of Lady Liberty

      Heute war der große Tag! Ich habe am 5. Juli 23 Tickets für einen Besuch bei der Freiheitsstatue gebucht, inklusive Aufstieg in die Krone.

      Wir haben uns also auf den Weg gemacht und sind mit der Subway bis Penn Station gefahren.
      Von dort sind wir die 5th Avenue hinuntetspaziert. Vorbei am Empire State Building (Mit einer strukturellen Höhe von 381 Metern – bis zur Antennenspitze rund 443 Meter – war das von 1930 bis 1931 in relativ kurzer Bauzeit errichtete Gebäude bis 1972 das höchste Gebäude der Welt.), am Flatiron Building (Bügeleisengebäude) und beim Metropolitan Life Tower (früher ein Versicherungsgebäude und von 1909 bis 1913 mit dem 213 m hohen Glockenturm, das höchste Gebäude der Welt)
      Weiter bis zum Battery Park und zur Ferry Station. Und dann war es endlich soweit, wir sind mit der Fähre zur Freiheitsstatue gefahren. Sie ist eine von Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi geschaffene neoklassizistische Kolossalstatue, steht auf Liberty Island im NYer Hafen und wurde 1886 eingeweiht. Sie war ein Geschenk Frankreichs an die USA. Mit einer Figurhöhe von 46,05 Metern und einer Gesamthöhe von 92,99 Metern gehört sie zu den höchsten Statuen der Welt.
      Emma Lazarus war eine amerikanische Dichterin. Sie verfasste 1883 das Gedicht "The new Colossus", das in das Podest der Freiheitsstatue eingraviert ist.
      "Gebt mir eure Müden, eure Armen, eure geknechteten Massen, die frei zu atmen begehren...."
      Den Aufstieg innerhalb der Statue haben wir mit 377 Stufen auf schmalen Treppen und zuletzt noch einer "one-way"- Wendeltreppe bis in die Krone bewältigt.  Es war einfach nur großartig!
      Am Rückweg gings beim Bryant Park vorbei, wo es einen Weihnachtsmarkt mit kleinem Eislaufplatz gegeben hat.
      Hier gabs auch nur Apple-Cider. Punsch und Glühwein bekommen wir wohl erst wieder zu Hause.      Read more

      Lady Liberty

      Tatsächlich liefen wir in der Früh zu viert beim East River und es ergaben sich tolle Jump Fotos. Ohne Anstellen ging es in das One World Obervertory, von wo aus wir New York überblicken konnten.

      Mit der Fähre schipperten wir zu Mittag zur Freiheitsstatue, wo wir ein kleines Picknick machten und sogar einen kleinen Nap einlegten.

      Zurück in der Wallstreet warfen wir einen Blick auf den Bullen (Charging Bull) und da einmal am Tag ein Museum dran ist, entschieden wir uns heute für das Guggenheim Museum!!! Ausgezeichnete Wahl und lässige Ausstellungen von Gego (Gertrud Goldschmidt) und Sarah Sze.      Read more

      Der letzte Tag 🥲

      Der letzte volle Tag unserer Reise - komisches Gefühl! Den Tag haben wir nochmal gut genutzt und haben in Dumbo gestartet wo wir das berühmte Foto unter der Manhattan Bridge geschossen haben. Danach haben wir eine Bootsfahrt zur Freiheitsstatue gemacht und pünktlich dafür kam nach einer verregneten Nacht auch die Sonne wieder raus. Da unsere Füße vom vielen Laufen schon weh getan haben, haben wir uns dann Fahrräder genommen um zum World Trade Center inkl. 9/11 Museum zu kommen. Das Museum war wirklich gut und interessant aber natürlich auch sehr krass. Danach ging es zur Wall Street wo alle dem Charging Bull an die Eier langen 😅 Wir haben uns dann eine coole Rooftop Bar ("Highwater") gesucht und auf unseren letzten Abend angestoßen. Danach haben wir von der Brooklyn bridge aus nochmal die wahnsinnige Skyline von NY bewundert und es gab einen letzten Burger als Abendessen 😊Read more

      Statue of Liberty (Liberty Island)

      Finally made it to the Statue of Liberty, I hadn’t planned to visit Liberty Island, but the ferry to Ellis Island, included a free return trip to the statue. So I decided to head over and see the girl in person.

      The Statue of Liberty was dedicated in 1886 and was named "The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World,” it was a gift from the people of France to the United States standing for democracy, liberty and freedom.

      The statue was far smaller than I thought it would be, with the majority of the height coming from the base. But she was beautiful, particularly when the sun briefly showed an appearance. The island contained a museum, cafe and shop. But my god it was cold!! And it had started to snow but the time I got there.

      Day 3: boat cruise

      Slept in abit today which wasnt planned ha. Weather wasnt perfect like last couple of days and they reckon itll be worse tomorrow. I went and done a sightseeing boat tour was allright went around the island and under the brooklyn and Manhattan bridge then back and out to the statue of liberty which looked awesome up close. The view of new york looked grest pity it was so cloudy n foggy couldnt see the tops of a few of the buildings.Read more

      Zu jedem anständigen Besuch in New York gehört auch ein Abstecher zur Freiheitsstatue. Den haben wir natürlich auch auf dem Zettel gehabt.
      Nachdem wir auf dem Weg nach Staten Island ja gestern schon dran vorbei gefahren waren, ging es diesmal direkt nach Liberty Island zur Top Touri-Attraktion der Stadt.
      Am Fähranleger warteten dann auch entsprechende Sicherheitskontrollen wie am Flughafen auf uns. Die Boote fahren im 20min Takt, wobei allein das Boarding und Entladen der ganzen Massen schon knapp 20min dauert.
      Einfach schlimm, wenn die Leute einfach immer und überall stehen bleiben und erst mal rumgaffen statt zügig weiter zu gehen. Am liebsten vor Rolltreppen, an der Gangway, an Warteschlangen, in der U-Bahn... immer und überall. Geht gar nicht.
      An den Fährterminals und auf der Insel bei der Statue ging es dann auch entsprechend voll zu. Zum Bomben-Wetter passend schoben sich bei 30 Grad die Massen gemütlich und entspannt im Kreis um die Statue, überall hunderte Leute die Fotos machten oder genacht haben wollten. Richtig touristen-massen-mäßig. Eigentlich gar nicht unser Stil, aber half nix. Mit Audioguide am Ohr und Kamera in der Hand schoben wir uns mit der Masse mit.      Read more

      So much green.

      Today we had booked to go to Liberty Island to see Lady Liberty but unfortunately we missed our train to the ferry terminal which resulted in missing our ferry time. We decided to head down to the terminal anyway. Leaving the train station we got sucked in to taking a harbor cruise out to Liberty Island and past Ellis Island. Our commentator was great and we enjoyed hearing facts about NYC. I personally liked being warm inside the boat. After our tour, we took the ferry to Brooklyn and ate pizza at Grimaldi’s. We stopped for a quick photo of the Empire State Building and headed back to Manhattan. The evening was filled with music at Gershwin Theatre where we saw Wicked. Amazing! Before calling it a night, we had endless salad at Olive Garden and did some late night shopping in Times Square.Read more
