      HCMC, Saigon oder Stadt der Roller?

      Wer denkt die A14 vor Luzern im Feierabendverkehr ist voll, der war noch nie in HCMC (Ho Chi Minh City) . Und wenn du etwas richtig dummes tun willst, dann kauf dir in dieser Stadt ein Auto...

      Das tut hier auch kaum einer, denn die Importsteuer beträgt bis zu 200%!
      Die Lösung hierzu heisst Roller.... ein unglaubliches Chaos, Gehupe, Ghetto.
      Wer sich nicht umgehend daran gewöhnt muss für das Überqueren einer Strasse min. 15min einrechnen.

      Nachdem wir diesen ersten Schock verarbeitet und uns einigermassen daran gewöhnt hatten konnte das Sightseeing beginnen.
      Diverse Sehenswürdigkeiten inmitten der Stadt welche man zu Fuss erreichen kann.
      Und selbstverständlich auch hier wieder Ihre ganz eigenen Märkte mit allem was man sich denken kann, sowie viiiiiiele Essensstände.
      Wobei insbesondere die vietnamesische Nudelsuppe (Pho) von uns ausgiebig verspeist wurde..

      Natürlich durften die Tunnel von CuChi etwas ausserhalb der Stadt auch auf unsere Tour nicht fehlen. Mehr als 20m waren wir dann aber doch nicht in diesen engen Tunneln unter der Erde unterwegs.

      Ein paar Zahlen zum Schluss:
      In HCMC sind momentan rund 7Mio. Roller und Motorräder auf ca. 10Mio. Einwohner gemeldet.
      Die Schweiz hat gem. Google ca. 800'000 solcher Fahrzeuge.....
      Ach ja, und damit wird hier alles Transportiert, was irgendwie geht, auch wenn das ein Baum ist.
      Und wenn nötig versendet man seinen Roller am Stück und Vollgetankt mit der Post.

      Nun verlassen wir HCMC in Richtung Norden für ein paar Tage am Strand.

      Ho Chi Minh

      I arrived into Ho Chi Minh at around 4pm on March 5th after a 10 hour journey from Phnom Penh.
      I stayed at Saigon Chill Hostel in district 1 - with every other tourist!!
      I was excited to finally arrive in Vietnam, as I had heard such good things from other travellers on my trip.
      The first evening I tried to set up a SIM card - without any luck and I came back to the hostel where I met a few people (Canadian guy, and an English/Irish couple) who were super friendly.
      I ate in a restaurant called home Saigon restaurant, which was very veggie friendly.
      On the 6th March I decided to do some exploring - I went to the war museum, Saigon central post office, and explored the area where the cafe apartments are. It was crazy seeing how much traffic is in HCM - and learning how to navigate crossing the road!
      For dinner I decided to try my first Banh Mi - which was pretty good 🤤
      On Thursday 7th I signed up to go to the Cu Chi tunnels with the hostel. It was very fascinating seeing the techniques used during the Vietnam war. I met really nice people on this tour who I went for dinner with when we got back. One thing about HCM is how hot/humid the weather was 🥵

      Von Can Tho nach Ho Chi Minh City

      Letzte Nacht haben wir bei einer Gastfamilie am Land in Can Tho übernachtet. Es war keine gewöhnliche Unterkunft, denn das Zimmer bestand aus einer Matratze mit einem riesigen Moskitonetz drüber und es war wie inmitten eines Regenwaldes. Ich muss zugeben, dass ich unglaublich Angst hatte einer Schlange oder Spinne (eine dicke hatte ich gesehen) zu begegnen und ich mich erst nach einer Zeit der Beruhigung im Schutze des Moskitonetzes wohler fühlte. Nachdem meine Panik sich gelegt hatte, war es eins der besten Erlebnisse meines Lebens. Es ist wirklich ein ganz eigenes Gefühl, wenn man der Natur völlig ausgesetzt ist und um sich herum viele neue Tiergeräusche wahrnimmt. Dank sei dem riesigen Moskitonetz und Moskitospray! Es hat mich etwas überrascht, dass ich ehrlich gesagt sogar besser geschlafen habe als die Tage zuvor in normalen Hotels. Ich bin jedenfalls ein Fan vom Landleben in Vietnam! Ich muss aber auch zugeben, dass die Städte hier sehr schön und interessant sind. Am Weg nach Ho Chi Minh City haben wir eine kleine Boottour am Mekong River gemacht und den floating market (Markt auf Booten) und eine Reisnudelfabrik besucht. Morgen steht eine genaue Erkundung von Ho Chi Minh City auf dem Programm. Natürlich habe ich auch wieder jede Menge neues Essen ausprobiert :)Read more

      Ho Chi Minh was een verrassend moderne en hippe stad met een mooie skyline. Er was ook heel wat te doen. We bezochten het Independence Palace (hét symbool voor de vereniging van Noord en Zuid Vietnam), het War Remnants museum (over de oorlog met de VS) en de Cu Chi tunnels waar de Vietcong zich jarenlang in verschuilden.Read more

      Hoi Chi Minh- City

      Nach gut 22h Busfahrt erreichen wir, als unseren letzten Stopp in Vietnam, Hoi Chi Minh City. Die Stadt wird auch Saigon genannt und ist die größte Stadt im Süden von Vietnam. Dass es sich um eine Großstadt handelt merken wir schnell: viel Verkher, was zu Staus führt, Baustellen mitten in der Stadt und auch dad Flair ist das einer Großsstadt-laut, dreckig, stickig. Hanoi oder Hue waren sehr viel schöner.
      Da wir in Hoi Chi Minh nur wenig Zeit haben, geht es nach dem Einchecken ins Hotel direkt los zum Kriegsreste-Museum. Der Wiedervereinigungspalast hatte leider schon geschlossen.
      Im Kriegsreste-Museum gab es sehr eindrückliche Bilder vom Vietnam-Krieg und den Folgen des Krieges. Bilder von verstümmelten und fehlgebildeten Menschen aufgrund der Chemikalien, welche die USA abgefeuert hat, oder auch Bilder von toten Soldaten, um einige Beispiele zu nennen. Die Zeit war leider etwas knapp bemessen, so habe ich nicht wirklich Zeit gehabt in die Geschichte des Vietnma-Kriegs einzutauchen. Das war schon sehr schade!
      Geld abzuheben an einem ATM-Automaten stellte sich auch erstmal als schwierig heraus. Geld genug war auf der Karte, nur konnte der Automat die Transaktion nicht durchführen. Was also war los? Des Rätsels Lösung lieferte uns diesmal die DKB selbst- sogar der erste den wir in der Leitung hatten. Es besteht ein Mindestabhebungsgebot von 50€ und wir wollten die ganze Zeit nur 40€ abheben.

      Am Freitag-Nachmittag, nach unserem Ausflug ins Mekong-Delta, kommen wir noch früh genug an um den Independence Palace anzuschauen. Von außen sieht er für mich eher aus wie ein Hotel, nur die vietnamesische Flagge deutet daraud hin, dass es ein Regierungsgebäude ist.
      Der Palast selber ist wenig spektakulär- es werden halt die verschiedenen Räumen des Palastes (Dining Hall, Konferenzraum, Bunker, Spielhalle, Bibliothek, Ladys Room, etc.) gezeigt, die jetzt aber auch nicht besonders anders aussehen als in anderen Palästen, die wir schon gesehen haben.
      Abends schlendern wir noch etwas auf dem Markt entlang und kaufen ein paar Souvenirs.      Read more

      We landed in Saigon, checked into our hotel and immediately made it over to the Ben Thanh market. The tourist sites refer to this as the central market in not only Saigon, but all of Vietnam. Lists of places to visit and walking tours all start here. It's a great place for introduction. The market is over 7000 square meters of clothing, knickknacks, bulk items, fresh foods, and food stalls.

      We wandered around the aisles for awhile waiting for just the right scent emanating from a kitchen to lure us to lunch. We found it and took seats along with a couple of Australian tourists on holiday. They'd just finished a beef salad bowl called 'special bowl' on the menu and recommended it. That and a mango Lassi really hit the spot.

      The afternoon we wandered up toward the ex presidential palace and American Consulate. Memories of war coverage came flashing back.

      In the evening we took a Grab taxi to Belgo, a Belgian brew pub some 3 kilometers away. The burger and Belgian frites with Samurai sauce were excellent. The beers were spot on as well.

      Our last night in Ho Chi Minh was spent at the Continental hotel. The legendary historic inn where Graham Greene wrote The Quiet American, the war journalists liked to drink in the 60s, and Bourdain preferred during his visits to the city. The hotel upgraded our rooms to suites. Nancy and I had two bedrooms with full baths and Don and Mary's spacious digs overlooked the Opera House. A night to remember.      Read more

      Ho Chi Minh City [5 days]

      As foreshadowed in the last post going from Hoi An to Ho Chi Minh City is not your usual commute connection as it takes 22 hours roughly. We spent the whole night and almost the whole day on the bus and arrived in Saigon at 3.30PM.

      Upon arrival we called for a cab to get to our place where we would spent the night. When we got our things sorted we left for the city and that was when we realized how big Sai Gon was. It is the biggest city in Viet Nam and home to 6.5 million Saigoners. Sai Gon is the name given to the city previous to 1975 which is the year in which the communists occupied the city and officially ended the American war on vietnamese soil.

      In remembrance to Uncle Ho who has died even before he could see the end of the war the city was renamed after him, hence the name Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC). A lot of history regarding the reunification of Viet Nam can therefore be found in HCMC especially in the Independence Palace and the War museum.

      First things to do in HCMC is obviously eating Banh Xeo which is a traditional dish from South Viet Nam. They are a savory pancake filled with shrimps, mung beans and other optional ingredients and a must eat in HCMC.

      Obviously, with a city as big as HCMC nightlife was also buzzing and we visited lots of rooftop bars and walked along the infamous Bui Vien walking street. Duc and Linh from Germany also joined us for a night to dance on the spinning platform with the DJ.

      Also thanks to Anh Duy who welcomed us in HCMC and showed us around and introduced us to his friends.

      Besides having fun and all Kim and the team of SoNaWi organized a tour to a manufacturer in HCMC producing mounting systems for solar panels where they engaged in discussions for potential cooperations. Additionally, with the help of Chi Hien we also joined a charity campaign raising money for a local orphanage.

      For the end of the trip we reunited with Kim's mom and her husband and prepared for our 4 day trip to Cambodia.

      Summarizing we experienced a lively city with welcoming Saigoners. Due to its economical importance HCMC has become one of the most important hubs in SEA which is exhibited by the international lifestyle and the higher diversity of people that you meet around the city. The locals describe the city that never sleeps and the weather as an one season summer throughout the whole year which nails it.

      One thing that I (Kim) take with me is that I wouldn't want to live in HCMC because it is just too big, too crowded and busy. The same thing applies to Hanoi. It somehow upsets me that there is barely space for pedestrians, that it is quite dirty and smoggy and that there are only few green parks. Now, I really appreciate the parks and many lakes around Berlin even more.

      - late arrival into HCM, the hotel room was unavailable due to AC not working, they all know each other so we went across the street to another hotel. Free upgrade for the next 2 nights as a result.

      - we explored the HCM chaos, motorbikes drive wherever they like including the footpath. We browsed the cafe apartments and visited the war remnants museum. Essentially, learning that the Vietnam war was brutal and the USA were crazy invested in a war that wasn't theirs to fight. A must visit place to get an insight into the horrible things that occurred. We visited a brewery selling all kinds of Vietnamese beers and then found dinner at an overhyped but nice rooftop restaurant called secret garden.

      - Day 2 involved a visit to the Cuchi tunnels, a place where the Viet Cong fought the USA using the underground tunnels. Another insane insight into brutality and unimaginable war history. Going through the tunnels was very tight, even despite the fact that they have made them bigger for tourists. The second part of the day involved a visit to the Mekong Delta, a large farming area supplying 80% of rice to Vietnam. This part visited a bee farm, some fruit farms and small canals on a boat, it was very touristy and probably would give it a miss next time. A tour deeper into the delta would have been better.

      - we finished with finding a delicious big bowl of beef pho (Pho Bo). A shop that was dingy and dishing out bowl after bowl, it had won a Michelin star in 2023.      Read more

      Sightseeing

      Heute ist es soweit unser letzter Tag in Vietnam. Koffer sind gepackt, Handgepäck ausgeweitet und wir zwischen den Welten 😊 Dennoch haben wir unseren Tag nochmal in vollen Zügen ausgenutzt.
      Gestartet mit einem Frühstück im Café Amazon. Danach ging es in den Tao Dan Park über einen speziellen Zwischenstop dann zum Independence Palast, welchen wir leider nur von außen besichtigen konnten, zur Notre Dam Kathedrale von Ho Chin Minh. Weiter durch die Bookstreet zum Post Office bis hin zur Ho Chi Minh Statue. Danach gab es nochmal einen kurzen Stop auf dem Saigon Square, bevor wir dann am Ben Than Streetfood Market noch mal lecker Vietnamesisch zu Abend schlemmten. Auf dem Weg zum Hotel entschieden wir uns dann noch für eine letzte Massage :)
      Jetzt sitzen wir am Flughafen und warten auf unseren Flug nach Shanghai bevor es dann zurück nach Hause geht. Voll gepackt mit tollen Erinnerungen spielen wir während des Wartens erneut Kniffel und blicken mit einem lachenden und weinenden Auge auf unsere bevorstehende Heimreise❤️      Read more
