Bolaven Plateau Loop

Got on a bike to visit what they call the Bolaven Plateau loop, surrounded by waterfalls, coffee plantations and ethinc minorities. Visited the famous and gorgeous Tad Fad waterfall from above and hiked to Tad Yuan, which was a challenging and unclear route. After a long journey and mudd everywhere arrived to the second impressive waterfall. After this walked to Tad Chip, which was still closed so there was no parking to go there by bike and got completely attacked by leeches because it was completely abandoned. After this and a lot of rain, continued my journey, stopped for some local coffee (tried typica coffee, which was very sweet and delicious) and continued my way through the minority villages until Capitan Hook homestay. The arrival, totally shocking and amazing, pigs, chicken, naked kids running around a very simple wooden made small village. No road no nothing, only empty spaces where you could find yourself. Everyone pointing towards a direction, until I arrived to this house, that looked exactly like all the others. There, I was greeted by Hook. The place looked so simple and real that was just a blast, not even a mirror in the whole place. He was building a new bed with bamboo, and invited me to go cook dinner with his wife. All the equipment were a small stone oven, a casserole and some veggies. But when we ate... How amazing the food was! I was the only guest in the place, but there was all the time kids running from side to side. Apparently, in front of the guest house, there was the family house, where 25 family members lived (which is not a lot, because before they used to be 200). Chatted with Hook, his wife and his sister for a while and learned a lot about so many things (Hook was a really really intelligent, interesting and open minded person) tried their bamboo pipe (which apparently they start smoking at 2 in this village, because they believe it protects and scares bad spirits) and went to bed after my longlong day. On the next day, woke up and learned how to make sticky rice with his wife, and had, again, an amazing breakfast with some coffee made with a traditional bamboo filter (most things in the village where made with bamboo). And again, the food was soooooo delicious, probably ate better in this place than for the past months. Then had a private tour that lasted for about two hours (and only for 1€!!!) Where I learned so much about the history of coffee, its process and its several applications, all the medicinal plants that they used in the village and the traditions and lifestyle of this minority village, such as their religion (they are animists) and their very different traditions and rituals. For example, you can't take pictures of people in here because then you are stealing their soul, you can't knock on doors because it gives bad luck, you can't give candy to children because if they die months later, the parents will believe that you poisoned them, they think white people stay white because they don't work and only spend money, and that we have big noses because we eat a lot of bread, they are also sure that the earth is flat and make woman give birth in the forest and make them cross a fire to enter to get cleaned. And sososo many other things about this interesting ethnical village and their very different approach of life.
On the next day, headed towards Fandee guesthouse and visited two more waterfalls and another village, and relaxed in the peaceful environment. Even though the drive wasn't as amazing as expected, the destinations where quite interesting, and even more to feel like I was the only tourist on the whole area.
📍Essentials: Tad Fad waterfall (make sure that you do it on a nice clear day), Tad Yuan waterfall (you can trek from Tad Fad, but the hike is pretty difficult, slippery, steep and some points it felt like you were out of the track), Tad Chip cave waterfall (it was closed so it looked a bit abandoned, but still beautiful, it looked like with less water you could reach behind the waterfall), Capitan Hook tour
🍴 Food: Jhai coffee (beautiful chill place with amazing homemade coffee, good spot for a coffee break)
💡Travelling tips: 📢 Beware there's so many leeches everywhere on the treks, bring a lighter with you, you'll need it to take them out of your skin quite often
💡Travelling tips: apparently there is a big problem with stealing bikes in Laos, so you always have to leave the bike in a parking (which is to say, you always need to pay to leave your bike), and double lock it. This is quite annoying because, instead of letting you enjoy the freedom of bikes, you end up trapped having to walk to many places (or be unable to visit many others) so your bike is safe.
🏠 Accomodation: Capitan Hook (realrealrealreal local experience, dinner and breakfast included), Famdee Island (french owned place, food is small and expensive though, but really chill place with wood tents and tree houses, there is a water park which kinda destroys the vibe as well in my opinion)Baca selengkapnya

Pakse

Left the development and modernity behind to go back to the simplicity of this "third world countries". Arrived to a very ugly city, but with a truly welcoming hostel. Laos and the people around it feel much more adventurous than the other places I had recently been to which excited me a lot. Met a very nice and inspiring japanese girl and hanged out with the small crew in the hostel with some cookies and tea from the owner. This feels like a good operation base, even though there's nothing really here, so I will start doing de boulevard plateau for a few days and be back soon. Also, how nice is it to go back to some good food with no sugar, fried and sauce in everything. Laos looks promising!
🏠 Accomodation: Sanga Hostel (lovelylovely host with very good english and very good tips and explanations, brings you tra and cookies to create a good atmosphere, super nice and clean place, really good vibe, and breakfast, even though not cheap, suuuper complete)
📍Essentials: Miss Noi (motorbike rent run by french guy, very good tips on the area, mostly on boulebard plateau loop and very honest)Baca selengkapnya

🔑Something this country taught me:
Spanish travellers are some of the most impolite and arrogant people, they complain about everything. Feels good to be away from this kind of behaviour and surrounded by good and kind people (you never realise this until you are far away from it)
♻️Something I've had enough of:
Spanish groups of tourists and the amount of sugar in every dish.
⏳Something I will miss:
The 7 elevens opened all day long in every corner
👣Leaving for next time:
Doing a muy thai camp, a yoga retreat in koh phangan, learn how to tattoo with bamboo and a thai massage course. Live in bangkok and experience the coty as an insider.
🎁To be remembered:
The way they put their accent at the end of ka words.Baca selengkapnya

Bangkok, one last time

Before abandoning this interesting city, did some shopping for some essentials so I would be prepared for the none developed world once again, enjoyed relaxing on the cozy hostel I booked, went on a bike rode around China Town (even though I'd say being the only bike rider on the area and thee crazy traffic gave me the feeling that Bangkok might no be the most bile friendly place in the world) and met Mireia, a friend I made who was also from Mataró (small world), with whom I even had common friends! Had my last sweet treat (hopefully Laos will have a bit less of sugar everywhere), and brought myself to my transportation to Pakse.
📍Essentials: china town, thai massage
💡 Travelling tips: for long bus journeys, the "travel company" offers the best jurneys price-quality. With comfortable reclined seats, food and drinks, good temperature, a blanket and good night buses experiences. Booking them directly on the bus station will help you save money.

Kha Tha floating market

Frank, the guy with the weird backpack from hellfire pass decided to join me the next day to my excursion to the floating market (wich was very convebient for me because he decided to take the motorbike and drive us there, turning the journey into 1.30h instead of the 5 hours I was expecting). So we went to the least touristy market I found and had a nice boat tour along the river, bit by accident because we though it was part of the market. Then we drove to the actual touristy market (it was terribly touristy, probably the worse thing I've seen in hole Thailand), where we spread and I searched for my way back to Bangkok for my last time before taking my bus to Laos.

Kanchanaburi, the railway of death

During world war II, the japanese used this spot in thailand, a neutral country, to build a railway that would go until Burma and India, so they planned to conquer this countries. This railway was expected to be built in years, but the japanese where such in a hurry that finished ir in only a few months. That was done by prisoners from the war, such as australians, english and dutch, with also lots of workers who where promised an improvement on their job situation and salaries. But the truth was that they where pushed so hardly due to the pressure to finish as fast as they could, that the conditions were way worse than deadly. Thousands of people died on this process, so the place is now a place of memorial and history for all those who'd like to understand what happened during this period. The hostel had a very nice backpacker vibe, because the city was a little bit out of the typical tourist route, and the owner was a cute small crazy lady, Mimi, who fed me and made me laugh with her stories and thoughts. I visited the city on my first day there and a veryvery weird museum supposely about the war (wich ended up just having a bit of everything possible such as random gems, religious drawings, prehistoric utensils...) Where I was greeted by a sleeping man (even with a blanket) on the ticket counter, and later on had a nice sushi buffet from the night market next to the hostel (a piexe of sushi was around 5 baths, which is around 10 cents!!). On the second day I biked to the Hellfire pass, an amazing outdoor museum around the location where the railway used to be, so you could see tje impressive work they did on such basic tools and learn about the drastic conditions they where under. The place is sponsored by the australian government, so its probably the cleanest and nicest pleace in all south east asia. With clean toilets, water dispensors, very clear explanations, an audioguide (and they let you keep the headphones), proper english speaking workers and they give you a walkie talkie for security for the very easy 5 km trek along the railway. And all of this... For free!!! I met Henry on the trek, a guy who Mimi wouldn't stop talking about (they even skyped when I was there) who was with a guy with the weirdest backpack (just aconstruction bag wrapped with a scarf), with who I ended up doing the trek and spending the rest of the day with. We tried to sneak into a cave (but we where caught) and visted a beautiful sightseeing spot from the railway of death.
📍Essentials: Hellfire pass

Bangkok

Last stop with Alli after a month full of friendship and love, that felt like a holiday from travelling (so it was full on tourism), where maybe my wallet was a bit tight at the same time. We visited lots and lots in little time and did as much as we could and enjoyed the socialness of Alli. We finished Bangkok with some more shopping around China Town and Kaosan Road through the pirate clothes and cheap technology. First Alli went to visit the grand palace (I am on a detox of temples for now, so I just mingled around the annoying touristy area of Bangkok), where she discovered she had a free show with the ticket and manage to get me one from some guys she met. So we went to a very touristy but beautiful free show where we saw all the traditional dances from the country, the different costumes and dances from the different eras and a representation on the creation of the Lanka bridge. We really really enjoyed this representation. Finally we went to Union Mall on a more local area and ate some ramen on a very special way! We chose the noodles, the toppings as in a supermarket and cooked it ourselves on a special machine (it was super modern!), Then we mingled around the mall and experienced the fun of bangkok lifestyle, with its cheap and full stores, the fashionable karaokes and a full floor for dancers to explore themselves (for free!). We ended up agreeing that we would totally live in this city for a while to experience all this fun and variety for a little bit (its probably the best way to experience bangkok). Finally we went on some bight markets chace, very unsuccessful, that ended up with just a taxis tour around the city. We finished our last day together with a nice foot massage from a lovely couple, and walked back to our tight and hot hotel to sleep one more our before our departure.
📍 Essentials: try out all the ways of public transportation, Amulets Market, Union Mall, China Town, Traditional Dancing show ( you get the ticket included in the entrance to the grand palace, with a free shuttle), get lost around the city

Slowly we were going higher and higher into the tourist hole. And this was the reaching point! Apparently everyone is spanish around here (I will autodiagnose myself an allergy to them, we spanish are without any doubt some of the worst tourists existing ). We got a nice hotel with a room facing a swimmingpool... So that kept us from doing too much, but we still manage to attend a fire show, visit the Phi Phi islands through a storm (got to see "the beach" from the movie and do some very cool snorkeling) and get some beauty time and braided all my hair (poor lady I think she wanted to die with the amount of hair I have). And from here... Back to the big city!

Alli and I separated for a few days, I wanted to break my way down south so it wouldn't be so long (also I was travelling in third class to fit my budget which made it tougher of a journey). And Alli decided to reach the full moon party, which wasn't much of an interest for me. This is why I took two days to visit one of the Thailand's Ancient capitals. I was warned in advance that I might be disappointed after being in Angkor Wat, but that made me a bit sad, because it meant people didn't understand that those were two different things for teaching you and showing you different concepts. I biked around the city and enjoyed the contrast of the very thai way of living nowadays, completely melt with hundreds of ancient ruins. I went to the tourist center expecting to get to learn some of the history of the Siam civilization, but found that it was moved to a way smaller building where I could only get a booklet. So I enjoyed part of the day in a quiet park and read about what the city could offer. To close the marvelous tour about what thailand might have been at some point (a civilization worth giving a second to observe and give its respects, because it's one of the few that has never been colonized), went to the Royal Palace, entered the Wat Mahatat, and while imagining how it must have been at the time, admired the fave trapped in the trea that makes the symbol of the city. Then came back to my cozy hostel, where I had a dinner with the other guests. On my second day took the day very slowly, and biked near the river, visited a market and got a massage for 3€ with all the other thai people populating the area.

Chai Lai Orchid (elephant sanctuary)

This was the only thing from our trip that we had planned in advance, and also our big spent in Thailand. Alli had found this marvelous place on the internet (through some influencers, of course), and despite my doubts on the matter, I discovered that their way of working and the money distribution fitted my expectations, so I decided to accept and join her on this small adventure. Just after arriving we took a tour with the elephants were we hiked with them and bathed them. They were freeq and just accompanied us next to their trainers, and that's how I discovered how lovely animals they were. You could kiss them, hug them, feed them... And just feel the warmth they expelled. We had a brief introduction to traditional weaving after that and had some lunch to finish our tour. Even though it was a unique and gorgeous experience, I missed out a bit on the explanation about this animals and their lifestyle (in the wild and in this institution) and started to see that maybe this place wasn't exactly what they sold. In the evening there was a happy hour (with awful reggaeton) on the beautiful cafe with amazing views, where you could enjoy the company of the elephants. And next morning the elephants would come to your room at an arranged time so you could feed them and then have your own breakfast. Again, even though the experience was unique, the place was beautiful and the life of the elephants as it can't be seen anywhere else. But it was made for instagram, for taking pictures and videos, for looking pretty and for showing the rest of the world "look at what I am doing and you're not". This elephants weren't rescued, and they didn't live in the hotel, there were just an entertainment toy for tourists, even though they were treated kindly and with respect, their life was no more than posing for our pictures and making us believe we were doing something good for them. The place didn't have anything too special either, besides the elephants, so the price didn't correspond the quality of the service, which disappointed me a bit.
Nevertheless, I don't regreat the experience, it was amazing and it gave me the chance to think and meditate around this subject (which I couldn't have done without seeing it), and I also understand that I've been lucky enough to see places as magical and exceptional that I can't be impressed so easily. We laughed, we let ourselves get impressed by this tranquil and powerful animals, we had some nice conversations with other people we met, we enjoyed, we swam, and we got ready for the rest of the country. Before heading towards the south, went to a michellin star restaurant for less than 1.50€, and took the train south.

Co...Pai

Everyone warned us about the long and curvy way to Pai, "everyone throws up" they said. Without any doubt, that was a saying from all this people that have scarcely escaped from the easy and developed in their lives, even though we must give some credit to the temerary drivers, who managed to get there an hour an a half before expected, and doing the trip after a night out didn't make the journey any more exciting. Throw this turns hidden between a dense jungle, we slowly found ourselves in this touristy complex with a sprinkle of hippiness, adventure, nature and relax that made it a nice spot to relax your awareness and let go. Our first attempt to get there was unsuccessfull, since we woke up right after our bus had left, and we ended up losing most of the first day. On my second fay there, my supoosed hangover was getting worse and worse... So figured out that maybe alcohol wasn't the main cause of my sickness. After an unfortunate result, found out I had caught covid, which made my stay in Pai a bit hidden and isolated. Nevertheless, managed to visit the main street, with its several food stalls, clothes stores and tattoo studios. Went to some hot springs, and visited the interesting Pai Canyon. On our first night we organized a feast with all the street food I found and ranked it, and let myself get better through the brise of nature and the sound of water.

Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai, even though is a very touristy city and not super pretty, is full of activities and things to do, which made it a nice stay. I realised that Alli was recharging with all her enthusiasm and energy, because without noticing, I was starting to become more and more antisocial and into my own bubble. So met a lot of people in this place and started to enjoy this sort of vacations of my backpacking, trying not to worry that much about money. At the beginning I got a bit afraid of travelling with Alli, since we are both so different and since this for her is holidays and she had way more money. But each of us decided to do different things during the days and met each other later, so it was literally the perfect way to travel with me, because we both got the freedom to do what we needed and wanted, but had each other back. The first day we visited a few temples on what Alli called the temple run (I wasn't that excited about this proposal) and partied at night. Even though I went out so I would be with Alli, I ended up staying until sun came back and way later than her and enjoyed this things that I was leaving behind. I have to say I haven't seen so many spanish (and even more catalan) during this trip until Chiang Mai, so it was nice to go back to my language for a short period. Did a moi thai class, learned how to make pad thai and went for a very steep hike called monks trail with some people I met at my hostel. And before leaving... Attended a drag show (how amazing it was), which ended up with a late night again and missed the bus to Pai and the yoga class I wanted to attend. Even though Thailand is way mor touristy, the backpacker vibe is way cooler than the other countries I did in south east asia (less english groups and lots of dutch), so I finally enjoyed meeting some new people on my way. And.. small update: finally giving a long break to my travelling and flying to Sydney the 24th of September!

Bangkok, back to modernity

About 15 years ago, a little girl saw her older brother take a journey to a land with a weird name called Thailand. How big is the world? How beautiful can things be? Her eyes were just glowing from admiration and jealousy. And then, she just promised herself that she was gonna go there once she turned eighteen. A promised she kept until the present day. Years came and went and her desire for travelling became bigger and bigger and also her ambitions, expanding to southeast asia, the whole continent, and ultimately just wanting to see the whole world. She was just so driven to this concept that she didn't even know was called backpacking even though she hadn't ever even seen or heard of before. The only thing she knew though, its that it was for her, and this was her big dream for a veryvery long time.
Probably, I would have become a traveller either way (its just something in my blood), but Thailand was the seed to everything where I find myself standing today. So I owed it to myself to show my 7 year old little girl how she would be capable of turning her dreams true and make them go even further than she could have ever imagined.
First stop of many more, around the world known country, Bangkok. After crossing a joke of a border from Cambodia, literally walking, I found a minivan that took me to Trat. Once I got there, my though was to continue hitchiking, but I couldn't resist to the appeal of it dropping me on the bus station and finding a direct bus in 20 minutes to Bangkok for 7$. So I arrived a day before to the big capital, and found myself in this big, new and modern city. For some reason it reminded me to Vancouver, with its skytrain and very nice buildings. I took the first day to do all this things I was unable to do for the past months, such as finding zipbags or probiotics. And then I met some friends I knew from Cambodia. At night Alliette arrived, and my solo journey took a break for the following month. It was so exciting to see her after such a long time, she was also the first person I backpacked with, so Thailand just made sense, it was going back to the origins, to were I was, what I wanted, what I needed and what I've turned into. I am not sure who was more shocked by Bangkok, her with its simplicity, dirtiness and mess of a poor country, or me, finding development, organization and modernity at the same time. I guess everything depends from where you're looking at the place from, so I found it very funny.
The next day we had a beautiful and relaxing Thai Massage and then we visited Cabbages and Condoms, a condom themed restaurant who uses all the money to sexual education in rural areas of the country. After that, we got ready for a longlong train jorney towards the north of the country.

🔑Something this country taught me:
How some of the most cruel acts performed in history were done by people who came from loving families, educated and healthy. So cruelty can't always be explained through adversity. While at the same time, how resilient, forgiving and loving can a country be after the biggest sufferings and poverty.

The food. Mostly the huge amounts of black pepper in every dish.

Koh Kong, Ready for the border crossing

Started my longlong way towards Bangkok (and ultimately, the north of Thailand). On my first day found my way to the border with Thailand, which wasn't as easy as I hoped. Walked in the jungle, took a tractor, a ferry a motorbike and finally some sort of shared taxi.
My plan was to hitchhike from Sihanoukville to Koh Kong, but no cara were stopping at all, because apparently no one was going towards that direction. After waiting for a bit and seeing the difficulty, a guy on his motorbike stopped to whom I explained to him the same as other (I go this way... You can drop me anyway in between doesn't need to be too far away...) and said to me, wait a moment. He left and a few minutes later came back with some food and drinks for me and said he was gonna take me to the bus station and pay for the ticket. On other situations I would have refused fiercely, but it seemed hard to get there, and he was insisting very kindly. There weren't even buses going to where I was going, but finally he found me a shared taxi. He left me there with the company to wait for it. But a few minutes later he came back, with a piece of paper and said to me, if you have any problem in Koh Kong, please call me. I was so shocked by the genuine kindness of the man who didn't even ask for my name.
Stayed in a cheap hotel with very loud karaoke noises until late at night (and I've you've ever heard asian people singing you will understand that it can even be a scary situation) but with a refreshing swimmingpool full of chloride. The day after, went for my last meal in the country, walking along the street until found a place full of people, as I usually do, and following the ritual, I waved at them and asked for food with no meet in khmer, to what I got a clear answer in english saying, with no dog then? And felt grateful for a moment for my vegetarianism, even though I am very sure I've had dog already more than once.
And with that, I left the country and took myself towards the humble and easy border to Thailand.Baca selengkapnya

How to make coconut oil from scratch 🥥

During our stay in LazyBeach, Anthony and I had the chance to attend a coconut oil workshop only a few weeks ago to which some guests invited us to. After it, it felt so easy and natural, that I thought it might be a nice idea to try and make our own coconut oil so we could bring some with us. So I asked Da, the guy on charge of the workshop, if I could borrow his tools to make some for myself, and set ourselves to work. Nevertheless, on the way of searching for the equipment, bumped into the woman that helped him with the workshop previously, and while I was asking her how to fetch all the tools together, she ended up helping us all the way to our oil (and even invited us to some coconuts), so the result and progress was indeed more professional and successful than the previous thought. She was such a lovely woman (no word of english, of course) and we had such a nice time, and a pretty cool result.
Here are the steps of how to make a proper coconut oil from scratch through the traditional techniques used in Cambodia.Baca selengkapnya

Lazy Beach, Koh Rong Sanloem (again🤭)

After a few months of constantly moving and changing, finally I had a place to settle for a little bit again. Indeed this place wasn't like the ones I had been before, since in here the concept of volunteering was very different to what I had done before. In here I was just another worker, whose payment wasn't through money but by benefits such as food, drinks, accomodation, transport... Which made the experience completely different to what I was used to, but also a beautiful one and with lots of learnings.
Anthony, a french guy I had met in my last hostel in the island, got completely captivated by my plan for the next month, and decided to join me. And that, without any doubt made the experience absolutely better. We worked long hours and some days it was quite demanding, because when the day was sunny the place was full and you had to do three things at a time on your own. But also, sometimes you just sat waiting for hours to pass because there wasn't really much to do. We were trusted with money from the beginning and you could clearly see how necessary we were.I learned a big deal about bartending and making cocktails (must say I am quite good at it) and everyday practiced some french with Anthony, while he was learning spanish with me.
During this past month, got the chance to meet some beautiful people and have some very nice laughs, such as a very characteristic swiss couple, some doctors working in Phnom Penh and some very sweet families. But also, my relationship with my boss wan't the best, since from the very beginning she treated me with despise always having something bad to say about me (but always with a smile, which made it even worse) such as "you're giving more attention to some guests than to others", "you didn't smile with enough enthusiasm while welcoming people" or things of the matter, that I can assure Anthony would have never even though of (cause I was more experienced in hostelery than him). I even got banned once from eating fruit so they would be for the guests (which hurt me a lot since its the base of my diet). My perception of her was that she person who only though of money and would never move a finger further than necessary for anyone, which chocked a bit with me (for example, we once took a juice by mistake to some guests that they didn't order and she charged them because they didn't refuse them, or charged for a simple glass of water), but always hid everything in her smile and niceness. And I guess, that was also an interesting exprience, because it was the first time I didn't have a warm relationship with my boss, but felt pressured and uncomfortable by its presence. The kitchen staff were beautiful (they tried to teach us some khmer unsuccessfully), and the owners (a sweet and relaxed family formed by Ken, Lida and TeyTey) and Ken's brother, Da' was always showing up there to help and give a nice idea, and fell in love with Lala, a smart 2 year old who was always around and with whom we always understood each other, nevertheless not speaking a word of each other's language. It was a holiday spot, so the customers were always nice and chilled, sometimes curious and hoping to have some nice conversation with us, which was a bit complicated because of our amount of work. And the fist thing to do every mooring was to walk about 10 steps and jump into the (most of the time) cristal water), as well as the very last thing before going to bed. Had more types of cocktails that I ever tried in my life, ate a looot, and was veryvery lazy. We had a huge storm for some days that broke many things (even trapped guests in the place) and many things broke, such as the wifii, so must of the time we were disconected of the world (even had to walk along the jungle to find somewhere with wifii to do a bit of my masters at some point), and when the poor wifi worked it was too weak to let you do anything. So we just read, relaxed and swam. Sometimes doing some different activities such as going for a run, visiting some beautiful hidden carvings on the jungle, snorkel on the reef, watch a movie or made some coconut oil. I also tought some yoga on the sunny days, having a large variety of students (even had a 7 year old more than once, who was more into it than the 60 year old next to him). The classes were on the beach with a towel, that I offered private classes for a very cheap prise and I had the chance to make some very personalized classes, which was very different to what I was used to (and made a bit of money, with some nice tips most of the time), I once got s student attacked by a crab on a class even!
As for the setting, we owned the whole beach and the closest thing such as civilization was Sarracen Beach, half an hour away on a treck with a minimart where you could buy basic things and some hotels and restaurants. The beach was always very dirty because the water just brought all the dirt that the locals and fisherman threw on the water, even though the workers spent a good amount of time to clean it daily. The bungalows were basic but enough, and really touching the beach, with always some companions around. For example we had a huge lizard living with us for the hole month, and I once had to take a rat from a guests room (which I released on the jungle instead of what I was meant to do because I was very unable of sacrificing the poor thing), and experienced our cat kitty giving birth in front of us.
Overall, beautiful and teaching experience, sometimes with some mixt feelings, but the scenario and privileges always made it worth it. And now, I am ready to say goodbye to the place and head towards the next adventure in... Thailand!
🍴Food: Lazy beach (coconut curry, yellow curry, amok, french toasts with banana jam, pasta homemade tomato sauce, banana fritters with nutella, peanut butter banana shake and any cocktail made by me:\)
📍Essentials: carvings in the jungle, be very lazy at lazy beach (maybe a cocktail for sunset), Da's coconut oil workshop, swim with the plankton at night and admire the beautiful clear sky (you can even see the milky way and lots of falling stars)
💡Some facts: this beach is considered one of the 21 most beautiful beaches in the world by National Geographic (even though its quite beautiful, I must disagree with it though, its not that stunning)Baca selengkapnya

Angkor, Cambodia's Gold Era

Couldn't leave Cambodia before visiting the emblematic Angkor. So before isolating myself in the beautiful LazyBeach, went to hunt for the beautiful and inspiring part of the country (and not so much its sorrows as Phnom Penh shows). Visited the main attractions (and closest ones) by bike, starting from sunrise until sunset from the moment the bus dropped me in the city of Siem Reap (you can imagine how exhausted I was afterwards, even got a nap inside of a temple at some point). Sunrise at Angkor Wat was mindblowing (I just stayed on the pound outside to escape a bit the crowds) and was lucky enough to be able to steal some information by just constantly walking nearby the multiple guides around. Then, entered the astonishing door towards Angkor Thom, and investigated through this huge recint formed by so many temples, such as Bayon, the temple of the faces, or Baphon, which is considered the biggest puzzle ever done after the effort its reconstruction implied. Felt like indiana Jones in Ta Prohm and sensed the power of the nature in this temple, which I feel like teaches you the lesson of how nature has the capacity of overcoming and adapting in a way that we can't even imagine (I must confess this was my absolute favourite temple).
Saved the second day for some of the not so famous places further in the nature, such as one literally inside of a river, or the detailed temple of Banteay Srei. But overall within the two days I visited for sure more than 10 magnificent and enormous temples. And most of them, I was there just on my own or with veryvery few people, so it was an absolute privilege to be able to do it at this time.
After that, needed a bit of a break of rocks and visited the landmines museum (where you could see the amazing story of a kid soldier who ended up spending his life removing landmines and UXOs and giving a better life to kids affected by them) and the center of conservation of Biodiversity where I got a very thorough explanation about several local animals and the functions of the place. So this was a day to see how beautiful people can be and how many ways it is possible to help at your own style. Also met some expats who invited me to some gigs they were doing and friends of them. And saw the beautiful expat atmosphere in the country (everyone was soso welcoming and there were people from all ages, shapes and colours), which I enjoyed very much (even got the band t-shirt as a gift and got invited to all drinks). The last two days I didn't do much, I was planning on visiting the floating village but rain didn't allow me to do so, so I just relaxed on the pool, partyied on the pubstreet and with the tucktuck bars, and even got a 3$ massage! Overall Siem Reap was quite a nice experience, were I met some very nice people (and from many different places), got some culture, some history, and indeed some inspiration as well. But to be honest, can't wait to start at LazyBeach and be back to the island life!
📍Essentials: Angkor Wat for sunrise, Bayon Temple, Ta Prohm, landmine museum, Angkor Center for conservation of Biodiversity (they offer guided tours were you can learn a lot about the animals they have and how they work with them to take care of harmed animals or to avoid their extinction, its also a way of visiting an ethical zoo, they had leopards, monkeys, turtles, really cool birds...), Live music scene, tuktuk bar (party a bit in the pub street as well)
💡Travelling tips: thanks to covid, now if you pay the entrance fee for a day you get one day for free, and if you get 3 or 5 days you get two extra days! So come to Angkor Wat before this is over (and also the place was incredibly empty).
💡Travelling tips: apparently foreigners are not allowed to drive a motorbike in Siem Reap, so do not stop if a police wants you to stop on the way.
💡Travelling tips: foreigners can only use the roads nearby with the Angkor tickets. For some sites the fastest route might be taking that road, but you might not be allowed. So again, if they make you stop at the checkpoint avoid them and don't stop or you can waste 10 minutes discussing with the guard so they let you pass (might not be succesful though). Or just use the other road (which I find very annoying).
🍴Food: Gelato lab, Khemer taste (really cheap food and drinks and they give you free water), Banlle Vegetarian Restaurant (veggy typical food for a price not too expensive), Mumbai kitchen (has some options for 2 dollars with bread and rice and they bring appetizers and water)
🏠 Accomodation: very cheap (3$ a night), cheap food, swimming pool and very cheap tours and bus tickets. And really nice staff, music isn't that nice and escaping from the british crowdsBaca selengkapnya

Back to Phnom Penh

Came back to the capital for some more Australian visa bureaucracy (yes, still with this). Got here by the interesting train, which had some nice views at some points and was comfy and skipping the bumpy roads. But got almost deaf with the constant clark and met and absolutely insane english man st the station. So, since I already visited what I was mainly interested in, took this days more easy. Did some aeroyoga (I am getting very into it lately as you can see), went for a run on the heat of the city, got a very cheap massage by a strong blind woman, had dinner with a turkish infuencer and just walked a lot around the city. My medical exam was very thorough, after getting even a chest x-ray and a urine test (passed everything;), everything's good), had a conversation with the doctor about the health status of the general population, and mostly the youth. I discovered how much it could be prevented only through education, because the main issue wasn't so much the poverty in the country (which is also a fact, Cambodia is veryvery poor and also not cheap at all), but a cultural matter and a lack of information. As you could imagine, this went directly to my weakest point. So I couldn't help but go on an expedition to the red cross (which is the institution I am familiarized with and know that they're willing to help and also to accept help) and exposed my case to the health department, almost suplicating for them to accept my help. Still, as it usually happens, the interventions they had related to my field were only short-term effective (they didn't even have a nutritionist on the country) and with veryveryvery high risk people, and wasn't so sure that they were willing to put more effort on what I wanted to work on. Still, I had a very nice chat with the person in charge and it was very cool to see the red cross from another country and how it worked. But I assured myself I wanted to keep insisting on the cause. After that, got myself comfy on a sleeping bus, ready to visit one of the 8 marbles of the world. How curious I am of the impression it will give me!
📍Essentials: azahar yoga (best adjustments I've had on resting poses), seeing hand massage (massagists are blind and the place is quite an experience, only for 7.5$)
🔍Travelling tips: an option of transport from Sihanoukville is taking the train. Great views, and the railway in Sihanoukville looks so poor and simple for the dimensions of the city it's in that it's truly impacting to see, the constant horn doesn't make it a pleasant trip (importance of making a use of your earplugs for the trip) and the loud wavy locals (inside and outside the train) either, but its still nice to see their enthusiasm, and you're skipping the bumpy roads from the bus/car.Baca selengkapnya

Koh Rong Sanloem, Sunset Beach

Booked a night in a simple accomodation on the other side of the island, but at the end I was never ready to go and leave such a cozy and warm place. There is actually nothing really to do around here, but this place is just the perfect one to do nothing. To reach sunset island you had to do an easy 2 km trek, but also very nice, that did as a filter for all the tourists who can't survive without AC (yeah, even in a desert island), high speed wifi and brand new installations. You would think that this people sound very tiring, and probably a minority around here (how would you go to a third world country with a backpack and not even try to adapt), but unfortunately, its the very big majority of people around this place. So this magic filter created a beautiful and relaxing place, where you could only find three hotels and an activity center; where no british nor large group would dare to cross, and only nice and interesting people reached this secret spot. As the days went by, I started recovering my energy and my glow, which I realised I had started losing more and more since my arrival to south east asia. Not feeling confortable anywhere and not a part of anything started to make me lose myself and not fully enjoy the experience, even question if I was the problem here (the backpacker athmosphere in this countries is reallyreallyreally not my cup of tea). So sunset beach kicked off as a medicine (even though nothing exceptional happened), and got me ready for some more discovering. You might be asking yourself what was I doing for the last week... But it was basically eat, work, eat, work, swim, eat, sleep and sometimes socialise for a bit. Even though the island is very expensive and it was raining most of the time, every moment was more than enjoyed and I got the chance to fully center on my masters for a bit, and also get immersed in the french culture on my very french hotel (had lots of crepes, pastis, played french games, with french people, learned some more french... And all over again). So there was a twist on my trip, and found a volunteering job on a close beach (apparently one of the 25 most beautiful beaches in the world according to national geographic) working as a bartender, were I also offered to teach some yoga. So I'll stay longer in this interesting country (really can't understand all these people who said you could do it in a week or two...), and jump to Thailand from here to meet Alliette (my canadian cousin who's actually not my cousin) and try the experience of travelling with someone for a month... What a challenge!
Last but not least! The owner of the hotel next door was nothing less than... Catalan! So I spoke my native language for the first time on my trip, had some bravas at her place (oh god, what a pleasure) and celebrated Sant Joan with a bonfire thanks to her (how unexpected it is to meet someone from your land for the first time on the most remote place!)
🏠 Accomodation: Sleeping Trees (nicer vibe on the beach and communal dinners every night for a reasonable price) or HubaHuba (the name will be soon changed to Kamaku, if you're catalan you'll understand what this means;), the place looks pretty nice and even has a beachgym)
🍴 Food: sleeping trees (they've got crepes, pizza and homemade bread and compared to the prices of the island its not so bad), bravas at HubaHuba (but food is quite expensive)
📍Essentials: sunset at sunset beach, lazy beach, trek around the island, mostly do nothing in a hammock, see the plankton at night, snorkel around the island, enjoy some boardgames which most accommodations offer
🔍 Some facts: you can find two of the most dangerous ants in this islandBaca selengkapnya

Mad Monkey Koh Rong Sanloem

Slowly the boat starts entering a cristal blue water bay, there's a long corridor leading towards a wooden house in the middle of the sea, swings on the water, organized hammocks next to each other and wood simple bungalows. This place looks like paradise. They drop you in the middle of the beach, you walk from the water to get to the sand, completely wet trying to save your backpack from the water. There's no better way of entering such a divine place. Still, the place is built for the average british group of kids, so you kinda feel how it destroys a bit the essence of the place. Every single detail is made to try and get you to buy as many drinks as possible. Had some very nice days on this private bay anyways, at the beginning uncomfortable and forcing myself into fitting in the place. But then, I finally saw a solo traveller walking in (such a rare specie nowadays). Had some nice time with him, a guy from Israel, and after that started to meet more and more people, since a large tour group came (with some diversity to the place). Did a fishing tour (it was the only way of getting myself into snorkeling) were I saw the amazing inside of the sea, gave a very unsuccessful try to fishing and had some lunch on a private beach. Nothing could be better. But after this days feeling a bit in a school excursion, left to the main island to see what else this barely occupied island has to share.
🏠 Accomodation: Mad Monkey: isolated from the rest of the world you can only get here with a boat from the island. The hostel is in a private bay, with hammocks and swings on the water, an amazing chilling area after a long corridor, and everywhere you look at is just stunning. They pick you up for free from the ferry in Koh Rong Samloem on a very cute boat. The only con is, as everywhere else, this places are thought for british kids travelling SA, so there's bad music all day long and its only purpose is to party and drink. Also food and drink are quite expensive since there's no other option on the place, and not so good either.
📍Essentials: Fishing trip (they take you on a boat around the island, you do some snorkeling which is sooo nice, and fish your lunch, that you will eat on a private beach totally worth it and for a pretty good price), fire show at nightBaca selengkapnya
