Cape Tribulation

Endgültiges Ziel des Tages war Cape Tribulation, dem einzigen Ort der Erde, an dem sich Regenwald direkt auf das Meer trifft. Auf dem Weg dorthin bin ich noch eine Tropenfruchtfarm gestossen, bei der man vier Kugeln Eis aus exotischen Früchten bekommen konnte. Mein Becher bestand aus irgendener speziellen Bananensorte (unfassbar lecker), Mango, Soursop (große grüne Frucht mit weißenm Fruchtfleisch, schmeckt nach einer Mischung aus Vanille mit Citrus oder so, fand ich mega) und Wattleseed (Akazienfrucht, schmeckt leicht nussmäßig mit ein bisschen Schoko/Kaffee). Wenn man wollte konnte man sich deren ganze Bäume in deren Garten anschauen, war auf jeden Fall cool, auch wenn natürlich nicht alle Bäume grad Früchte trugen. So hab ich auch endlich mal den Baum meiner geliebten Mangosteen-Frucht gesehen. Leider waren deren Früchte aber noch grün, sonst hätte ich ihnen runtergeklaut ;) War auf jeden Fall ein super, spontaner Stop!
Den Strand bei Cape Tribulation fand ich jetzt nicht soo spektakulär, ist halt genau das, was es ist: Regenwald direkt am Meer ;)Read more

Where the Jungle Meets the Coral

We finally arrived at our northern most point of the trip, where the rain forest meets the coral, Cape Tribulation.

Lumpy the Crocodile (Part 2 Billy Tea)

Where the Rainforest meets the Sea: auf dem Weg haben wir auch an einigen traumhaftschönen Stränden halt gemacht, wie zum Beispiel am Cape Tribulation Beach! Hier hat anscheindend Captain Cook sein Schiff aufgesetzt und gesagt: “here begun all our troubles”.
Danach hiess es für uns ab in den Daintree River, aber bloss nicht schwimmen, es ist nämlich der Lebensraum von ca 100 Krokodilen, vielen Vögelarten und Mangroven. Die berühmtesten 2 Krokos sind “Scarface” und “Lumpy”. Wir hatten das Glück Lumpy 🐊 2 mal zusehen, er ist 4m lang. Dazu haben wir noch ein Babykrokodil beim Sonnenbad beobachten können. Die 1h Bootsfahrt war sehr eindrucksvoll. Und ganz generell hat sich die ganze Tour gelohnt!Read more

Hannes wird 30!!!!!

Dass Hannes seinen 30. Geburtstag mal so weit weg von Zuhause feiern würde, hätte er wahrscheinlich auch nicht gedacht.
Er feierte seinen 18. Geburtstag bereits ohne seine Freunde und Familie, da er diesen in Kalifornien verbracht hat und nun ist er wieder an so einem großen Tag nicht Zuhause bei seinen Liebsten. Wir feiern den Geburtstag in Sydney. Zum Glück habe ich heute frei bekommen und kann den Tag mit Hannes verbringen.
Da wir noch im Hostel sind, ist die Gestaltung für etwas schwierig, da wir nirgends allein sein werden. Aber das weiß Hannes ja. Ich gebe mein Bestes und lauf in der Früh zum Bäcker, bereite ein Frühstück auf der Terrasse vor und dekoriere das Ganze mit Luftballons usw . Gesten nacht haben wir vor dem Hostel mit einer Flasche Sekt auf seinen Geburtstag angestoßen, hoffentlich schläft er heute etwas länger.
Ich wecke ihn auf und führe ihn zur Dachterrasse. Zum Glück freut er sich und die anderen Leute die hier sitzen halten sich etwas zurück. Danach legen wir uns ins Bett und ich zeige Hannes sein Geburtstagsvideo, das ich in den letzten Wochen zusammengeschnitten habe. All seine Freunde und unsere Familien haben mitgemacht und sich wirklich was tolles einfallen lassen. Hannes freut sich mega und es rollen sogar ein paar Freudentränen. Danach packen wir unsere Sachen und ziehen los an den Strand. Wir steigen in den Bus und fahren ca. 20 min zum Bondi Beach .Das Wetter ist heute gigantisch. Da zur Zeit das ViViD (Lichterfest ) ist , habe ich Hannes eine Schiffsfahrt mit einem anschließendem Abendessen geschenkt. Wir gönnen uns eine riesige Fischplatte und eine Flasche Wein und lassen den Abend am Lichterfest ausklingen.Read more

Cape Tribulation

Ich hatte Georgie aus England kennen gelernt, und da wir gemeinsame Pläne aufgrund von Änderungen ihrerseits nicht machen konnten, genossen wir zumindest ein Frühstück und Strandspaziergang zusammen.

Weiter nach Norden ging es ans Cape Tribulation.

Leider war das Wetter mal wieder nicht so toll. Ich hatte noch nie so tief hängende Wolken gesehen. Im Daintree Discovery Center lernt man sehr viel über den Regenwald und seine Bewohner. Mit $37 Eintritt nicht billig, aber was solls.

Am Cape angekommen, hat es aufgehört zu regnen, weshalb ich noch ein bisschen rumlaufen konnte… Spinne inklusive.Read more

Cape Tribulation

De nattigheid blijft aanhouden, maar we troosten onszelf met het feit dat dit nog lang geen regenseizoen is. Dat is maar goed ook, want we mogen volgens het huur-wurg-contract niet door water heen rijden. Dan hadden we de route vandaag niet kunnen rijden. We beginnen vandaag met de oversteek van de Daintree River met het pondje. Niet lang daarna zijn we al bij een wandelroute door het regenwoud; Jindalba Rainforest Walk. We kunnen 'm lopen op onze slippers; weinig spektakel, wel de nodige muggen. Het blijft regenwoud dus regent het ook tijdens het loopje. Gelukkig houdt het bladerdak de meeste regen tegen. We rijden door naar Myall Beach waar we nog een korte wandeling maken. Hier loop je door Mangrovebos tot aan het strand. Bij Cape Tribulation (Kulki Cape Tribulation Walk) stoppen we voor de laatste keer, waarna we besluiten rechtsomkeer te maken en terug te rijden naar Daintree River om nog een tweede boottrip maken om krokodillen te spotten. Dit keer hebben we meer succes! Een groot mannetje ligt op de oever, en verderop een vrouwtje, half in het water met een kleintje. We rijden verder naar het zuiden, waar we bij Rifle Creek een camp site voor de nacht vinden.Read more

Up to Port Douglas, wait Cape Trib

The next day we head up the gorgeous, windy road and stopped in Port Douglas to check it out. PD was nice but a little upmarket for our mood in the camper van. We went for a swim (in the netted area this time) and had breakfast.

We decided to go up to the Daintree Forest and stay at Cape Tribulation. You cross over the Daintree river on a short ferry and from here on out all electricity is provided by generators or solar so it's quite off the grid.

We climbed up a windy road to a beautiful look out and had lunch. So cool to have everything right there with you!

Daintree is a World Heritage site and beautiful country. We found a campsite just seconds walk from the beach. We had a couple afternoon drinks, then went to the campsite cafe and met some locals. Then cooked dinner in the camp kitchen and watched a little Lord of the Rings in anticipation of New Zealand. I think I made it through 20 minutes and fell asleep by 9:30, a regular occurrence these days.Read more

Day 40
Chill day at swimming spots

With all this traveling we decided to have a chill day. We had heard from Cotty about this Blue Hole. She didn't know where this secret swimming hole but told us to try find it. The locals we met the night before have us directions so we went there.

Down a road there is a gate which clearly states that this is a sacred site for the aboriginals. It is the only meant for female aboriginals and that the elders are responsible for taking care of it. The sign didn't prohibit others entering but asked that you respect the sacredness and not enter. Oh my, that's even worse! We proceeded waiting for wrath to strike us down. We got to the spot and it was gorgeous no doubt. The swimming area was off to the right and we needed better shoes to get there so didn't swim.

We then drove an hour to check out Cow's Bay. Little bit of a disappointment which is ridiculous. We were like 'Oh just another beautiful beach where the rainforest meets the sea.'

The whole time were were driving in the area we saw signs to watch out for the cassowaries and pictures of emus. Never heard of a cassowary but we found out. From a distance we saw an emu. Upon closer look we saw this black bird with a blue and red head. Later we found out that it was rare to see them so again we got lucky with animals in the wild.

Next on our stop was another swimming hole, this one public knowledge. Beyond Cape Trib is only dirt road and at some point becomes a 4x4 only trail. Insurance covers nothing for the camper if you drive on dirt roads but we did anyway. It was a little sketchy at times but we made it. A little walk and an absolutely gorgeous swimming hole.

Had lunch there and then went back to our campsite to finally chill. I could only handle less than an hour and I was up again to take a walk on the beach. I've never seen a tide that changes so much. It was about 400 yards from where it had been at high tide.

Had our afternoon drinks and cooked dinner. Then took a walk along the beach to the local backpacker bar to listen to some live music. Pretty good and nice to get out. Then we walked home along the beach that was now high tide and literally wiped out the beach at times. Not such a good idea especially because now there were estuaries entering the sea and this is serious crocodile country. Again lucky with animals, this time NOT sighting one!
