      Küstenstraße: Indian Ocean Drive

      Unser Hostel war richtig gut und obwohl wir nur kurz in Geraldton verweilten, mögen wir diesen Ort.

      Nach einem leckeren Frühstück spazierten wir durch die Stadt und wurden von dem ein oder anderen süßen Shop überrascht 🤩.
      Dann musste ich ein bisschen drängeln, da wir noch vier Stunden Autofahrt vor uns hatten. Wir sind den Indian Ocean Drive wieder zurückgefahren bis nach Yanchep. Die Highways in Australien sind lang, eintönig und heiss. Zum Glück waren es heute nur 33 Grad.

      In Yanchep besuchten wir noch den Nationalpark, wo wir Kängurus, Koalas und graue Kakadus sehen konnten. Volker, du hättest die Koalas sofort entdeckt 😅. Es erinnerte mich an Costa Rica, wo wir auch die Faultiere in den Bäumen gesucht haben. Volker hatte IMMER welche gesehen.
      Anschließend fuhren wir zum Strand namens "Yanchep Lagoon" und holten uns mehrere Brisen Wind, Ozean und Sand ab, bevor es für uns ins AirBnb ging. Da es weit und breit fußläufig keine Restaurants gab, mussten wir improvisieren. Ab zu Hungry Jack's!

      Der Indian Ocean Drive ist eine Küstenstraße im Südwesten des australischen Bundesstaates Western Australia. Er verbindet die Lancelin Road bei Lancelin mit dem Brand Highway südlich von Dongara. Seit der Fertigstellung im Jahr 2010 trägt die gesamte Straße die Nummer Staatsstraße 60 (S60).       Geraldton: HMAS Sydney II Memorial

      From the cathedral, we slogged uphill to visit one of the iconic sites of Geraldton … stopping for a quick few minutes to buy some mangos from a supermarket along the way.

      The keel of HMAS Sydney II was laid in 1933. Its name then was HMS Phaeton … and she was intended for the British Navy. The name was changed when she was purchased by the Commonwealth of Australia. After serving in the European Theater, she returned to Australia, where she continued her escort duties in Western Australia, calling on Geraldton three times during that time.

      On the evening of 19 November 1941, on her way back from the Sundra Straits, she encountered the German Raider, HSK Kormoran. The two ships engaged … resulting in the loss of both. No trace was found of HMAS Sydney and her crew of 645 men following the encounter. In March 2008, the wreck of HMAS Sydney II was found in position 26 14 45 S / 111 12 55 E.

      The memorial, which was dedicated on the 60th anniversary of the sinking, has several symbolic elements — the Wall of Remembrance, etched with the names of the lost and the poignant words … “The Rest is Silence;” the Sanctuary … with its dome made of 645 stainless steel seagulls representing the souls lost when the ship sank; the Podium … at the center of which is a ship’s propeller, which serves as an altar for wreath laying; the Pool of Remembrance, into the floor of which the coordinates of the wreck position are etched; the Stele … shaped like the prow of HMAS Sydney II; and the Waiting Woman Sculpture … representing the women grieving for their men.

      The memorial is exceptionally well done … visiting it is a moving experience, and one not to be missed.      Lue lisää

      Geraldton

      Gestern fuhren wir bei etwas angenehmeren Temperaturen fast 200 km nordwärts nach Geraldtton, die grösste Stadt zwischen Perth und Darwin mit ca. 35'000 Einwohnern. Bis abends um 17.00 Uhr gibt's Betrieb im CBD (Central Business District), nachher sind die Trottoirs hochgeklappt.
      Heute besuchten wir die Sehenswürdigkeiten von Geraldton: die hübsche Kathedrale, die Strandpromenade mit den obligaten Grills und den schattigen Picknickplätzen und das Museum of Geraldton. Das moderne Museum ist sehenswert und verlangt nicht einmal Eintritt!
      Gestern und heute waren wir gezwungen auswärts zu essen. Grund dafür war, dass sich die hoch bewertete Unterkunft in einem eher verwahrlosten Zustand präsentierte!      Lue lisää

      Geraldton: Museum of Geraldton

      Having taken a lunch break following our visit to the HMAS Sydney II Memorial, we were ready to tackle the first museum on our list for today … the Museum of Geraldton.

      The museum is described as celebrating “the rich heritage of the land, sea and people of the Mid West region.” Exhibits cover topics ranging from ancient landforms, to Yamaji culture, to the unique landscapes and marine environment of the region.

      On display in the Shipwrecks Gallery are finds from Dutch vessels that went down in nearby waters — Batavia, Gilt Dragon, Zuytdorp, and Zeewijk. A popular exhibit covers the sinking and wrecks of HMAS Sydney II and HSK Kormoran … both of which lie some 8,200 feet below the surface of the ocean. A screen displays images of the wrecks.

      The museum is not very big … but it is well done. We enjoyed wandering around the various exhibits, but freely admit that we did so in a hurry as there was one more museum we wanted to check out before returning to Regatta.      Lue lisää

      Ok so Geraldton does not have much to do. But I managed to find a few things of interest.

      I began my day with a dip in the sea, cause why not. Bit of a swim and reminding myself this is somehow my reality and I'm not dreaming.

      Then headed out to the museum. I may have accidentally walked into a thrift store and left with two books. But I had a very good reason, the books needed saving from this boring little town. One is on serial killer couples which is awesome. and the other is a LGBTQ+ book and there is no way anyone in this little racist town was ever going to by it. So I performed a powerful daring rescue and left with new reading material in tow.

      Also on the way was the arts and crafts centre. It is situated in the old goal making it both a point of interest historically and arty. However for some reason the front door was looked for 'security reasons' and told me to go to the other door. The other door had a sign that read 'locked on mondays'. So I'm not sure how I was supposed to get in. Very strange but it didnt look great from the window so no big.

      Finally arrived at the museum. For a place so small it has a rather large museum. There was the standard section for the aboriginal heritage of the coral coast. Lots about the old lore and how the british 'discovered' amazing things thanks to the aboriginal guides showing them. There was another section on a tv show, I think it was at least. It is set in a modern setting but the characters are all superheroes and it's based on aboriginal stories. At least that's what I thought it was. I'm honestly not sure as there was little to no text on the walls explaining it and most was in the aboriginal language. So I got throughly confused.

      The final two sections were the ones I went to the museum for. The VOC, a trading company based in the Netherlands in the 15-17th century used to use the west coast of Australia to get up to Batavia (now Jakarta in Indonesia) where they did trading with Asia for Europe. However the west coast had notoriously large amounts of tiny island, reefs and random shallow waters. As a result a large number of boats run aground here during their voyages. The museum is responsible for the protection of these ship wrecks and the artifacts within them.

      Most simply crashed due to not knowing where they were thanks to dreadful maps they had. However a few of note had sections in the museum. One run a ground after its captain decided they would chart a new route and hit land instead. Another managed to survive the reefs and outlying islands and hit instead straight into the mainland cliff. This one is interesting as accessing the wreckage is still extremely difficult today, and evidence was found at the top of the cliff, of survivors. If this is true, then neither the British nor the Holland sailors who first arrived here are actually the first settlers. However there is little evidence beyond the cliff so that is impossible to confirm.

      And finally another ship called the Batavia, name after the companies headquarters in Asia ran a ground. The survivors not only split into factions on the islands they were now stranded on. One faction beginning a brutal annihilation of any who opposed included the women and children sailing for pleasure aboard. The captain and other higher ranking officers had taken the remaining lifeboat and managed to sail all the way up to Batavia and somehow survived. The final group created an alliance with those running from the first group and managed to build themselves a boat out of the wreckage. They luckily did not have to test its ability as the captain returned soon after.

      What is also interesting is the boat held a large number of stone slabs. These slabs were intended for Batavia and when placed together created a massive arch way that would have signalled the opening to the city. Needless to say, this boat being lost had a lot of significance to both the people aboard and the company that owned it.

      Once thoroughly impressed and freaked out by this museum I left for lunch. Did a bit of stuff on my ipad and finished my world packers profile. Fingers crossed something comes of that but we shall see.      Lue lisää

      Regen...und nochmals Regen ☔️

      Nach einer doch sehr kurzen Nacht, 🥱 begann der Tag, mit einem Frühstück im Camper. Es regnete die ganze Nacht und auch der Tag begann nass. ☔️

      Nino lernte ein schweizer Mädchen kennen - so gab es keine Sprachbarriere, und es konnte den ganzen Tag gespielt werden 😊 sogar mit Kinoabend im Camper 🍿

      Was wir nach diesen zwei Regentagen auch wissen - unser Camper mag kein Nass. 🙈 Die Hauptsicherung schaltete immer wieder aus und viel ärgerlicher, die Klimaanlage gab den Geist auf. 🥵 Mal schauen, ob diese bis zu unserem Abflug, wieder funktioniert. 🙈      Lue lisää

      Busselton - Perth - Geraldton

      In Busselton haben wir am Morgen noch gemütlich gefrühstückt, alles zusammengepackt und sind dann Richtung Perth losgefahren. Ausser einem Tankstopp haben wir nicht angehalten und sind somit am früheren Nachmittag in Perth angekommen. Da haben wir auch gemerkt, dass wir definitiv wieder im Sommer angekommen sind. Obwohl es teilweise sehr stark windete, war es bei 32 ° Grad schön warm und wir konnten eine Erfrischung im doch eher kühlen Pool nehmen. Heute ging unsere Reise weiter nach Geraldton. Unterwegs sah man immer wieder weisse Sanddünen inmitten der Landschaft, weit weg vom Meer. The Pinnacle Desert National Park hiess dann unser nächster Stopp. Darauf haben wir uns sehr gefreut. Die riesen Sandwüste mit den vielen Pinnacles, das sind Kalksteine und über Millionen von Jahren alt, dem gelbem Sand und dem blauen Himmel ist einfach ein wunderbares Farbenspiel der Natur. Es wird schwierig die vielen Fotos auszusortieren. In Geraldton liessen wir uns noch vom Thai verwöhnen und geniessen einen ruhigen Abend.Lue lisää

      Geraldton - Drummond Cove

      Da wir gestern spät in Geraldton (grösste Stadt zwischen Perth und Darwin) angekommen waren, hatten wir bisher nichts von der Stadt gesehen. Wir entschieden, noch eine Nacht hier zu verbringen, einfach nicht im Backpackers. Nach einigem Suchen wurden wir in einem Holiday Park etwas ausserhalb fündig.
      Zuerst schauten wir uns das Memorial für die Besatzung vom Kriegsschiff Sydney an, das von einem Nazi Schiff versenkt wurde. Alle 645 Mann kamen ums Leben, das Deutsche Schiff sank ebenfalls, dort überlebte ein Grossteil der Mannschaft.
      Dann ging's zur speziellen Kathedrale von Geraldton, dem Lebenswerk eines Pfarrers und Architekten.
      In der Nähe des Leuchtturms gab es die erste Abkühlung im Meer.
      Anschliessend besuchten wir das Museum of Geraldton. Hier gab es einen 3D Video von den beiden Wracks auf 2500 m Tiefe zu sehen, sehr eindrücklich. Auch die anderen Ausstellungen zur Geschichte von Geraldton waren sehr spannend gemacht.
      Danach gab es Mittagspause an einem anderen Strand mit anschliessender Abkühlung. Genial, dass es bei fast jedem Strand eine Dusche hat.
      Beim Znacht genossen wir den Sonnenuntergang, einmal mehr ganz grosses Kino.      Lue lisää

      Bäume der anderen Art

      Auf unserem Weg durchs Outback gab es verrücktes zu sehen. Neben blauen Bäumen gab es zum Beispiel auch "liegende" Bäume. Das ist eine Eukalyptus-Art die durch den stetig wehenden Wind einfach zur Seite gewachsen ist. Sieht aber auf jeden Fall sehr verrückt aus 😃 was es mit den blauen Bäumen auf sich hat, konnten wir an dem Tag nicht heraus finden.

      Wir sind danach aber noch ganz fix an den Strand gefahren. Zum schwimmen hatten wir leider keine Zeit. Aber es gab schöne Sonnenblumen in den Dünen 🌻 irgendwie ein ungewohnter Ort dafür, aber sehr schön anzusehen.      Lue lisää

      Ellendale Pool

      Unser nächster Halt ist am Ellendale Pool. Hier stehen in erster Linie viele Camper ... und wir 😂

      Wie sind wir hier gelandet? Tja ... gute Frage. Es war einfach der nächstgelegene "grüne Fleck" auf Google Maps 😂
      Und es ist wirklich schön hier. Mit dem Flusslauf, den Bäumchen und den Felsen sieht es hier deutlich anders aus, als bei unserem letzten Stop.

      Aber leider haben wir nicht mehr all zu lange Zeit, da wir auch wieder zurück fahren müssen.

      Aber für ein paar Gruppengotos reicht es noch 😋      Lue lisää
