Day 9, Ilhabela, Beware the Barrachudo

      February 16, 2023 in Brazil ⋅ ☁️ 81 °F

Ilhabela is reputed to be one of Brazil’s most beautiful islands. It is also home to a vicious fly called a barrachudo, which inflicts a painful and lasting bite. We were leery of the insect since Mark attracts them and I am not fond of covering myself with ‘OFF’. So we never left the ship. 😳Mark was reluctant at first to leave his bed 😎 but did venture out for food, exercise, and a cigar. We enjoyed the stunning scenery from a safe distance.Read more

      Vrijdag 17 febr.

      February 17, 2023 in Brazil

      February 19, 2023 in Brazil

      Salut mes p'tits pingouins.

      February 24, 2023 in Brazil

      Donderdag 23 febr.

      February 23, 2023 in Brazil ⋅ 🌧 22 °C

      Vrijdag 24 febr.

      February 24, 2023 in Brazil ⋅ 🌧 21 °C

Me moeder belde nog even met me vader.
Jack

      Exploring Santos

      March 2, 2023 in Brazil ⋅ ⛅ 82 °F

Today, we joined Sonia and Boris, who had hired a driver (Cesar) for a loosey-goosey tour of Santos … meaning that the itinerary was “fluid.”

Cesar first took us to Monte Serrat. One can walk up 402 stairs to get to the top — with the Stations of the Cross in niches along the way — or one can take the funicular up to the top. As hot and humid as it was, there was no way we were going to attempt the former, so we went up in the funicular.

In addition to expansive views from the top — there is a small church and also a now-defunct casino up there.

The church, dedicated to Our Lady of Monte Serrat, was built in 1599. Tradition has it that when Dutch privateers invaded Santos in 1614, a landslide, attributed to her, crushed the soldiers, thus saving the city. She became the patron saint of Santos in 1955.

As for the casino. It operated between 1927 and 1946. One of the guides at the casino, Pedro, gave us a “tour-for-tips” insight into the history of the property using old photographs as props. He also took us up to what used to be the grand salon back in the heydays of the casino and up to the terrace to see the views.

The most intriguing piece of information Pedro related was about a landslide that happened in 1928 on the backside of Monte Serrat. He showed us a picture of the devastation and told us that the casino survived undamaged. Pointing to the shape of a woman in the rubble — seemingly supporting the casino — he explained that the miracle of the casino’s survival was aldı attributed to Our Lady of Monte Serrat.

Next, we drove to the beach area of the city. Parking, co-incidentally, in front of Basilica Menor de Santo Antônio, we decided to cross the street to visit it first. The bonus was that it was comfortably cool inside thanks to a cross breeze coming off the water.

The basilica was built around a small church that was constructed here in 1874. The current church was built by the Capuchin monks. They started construction of the new church in 1930 and it was opened for service 15 years later. It became a basilica in 1952. I loved the ceiling and the stained glass windows in particular.

After visiting the basilica, we took a break at a seaside café where we delighted in the cooling breezes. Then, we wandered a portion of the 3¼-mile long manicured beach-front gardens. Apparently these gardens have earned a place in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest of its kind. There were some statues to add interest to our walk … as well as a lighthouse. Along the way, Cesar pointed out how the high-rise buildings are all leaning due to the unstable soil on which they were built. All have settled from what he told us.

Lunch was next. Cesar took us to Tertúlia, a Brazilian churrascaria … aka, a barbecue place. I’m not a meat person, so I munched on the side dishes that were served alongside the various meats brought on skewers and served table side. As a bonus, we ordered an extra basket of the empanada-like pastries for me. Those who partook of the meat said that the various selections were all good, though each person seemed to have a favorite cut or two.

Everyone was stuffed by the time we left the restaurant. So, we skipped the swimming portion of the fluid itinerary. Instead, we headed to the Santos FC store so Sonia could pick up a jersey for her grandson. Traffic was horrible, and having retraced our route that far, we told Cesar to just take us back to the ship. Frankly, I was ready to call it quits … the heat and humidity had been draining.

By the time we took care of a few chores, it was time for Insignia to move out of its berth and head down the estuary to the Atlantic Ocean. Pouring ourselves some drinks — wine for me; rakı for Mui — we settled ourselves on the veranda to watch the scenery on the port side of the ship to see what we had missed this morning.

Now for some quiet time on the veranda to recharge my batteries and gird my loins for the heat we expect to find in Rio tomorrow.

      São Paulo

      March 22, 2023 in Brazil ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

      São Paulo.

Our last stop on this amazing adventure!

We hadn't originally planned to come here, but all of our flights home left from here, and we had met some friends along the way from São Paulo that covinced it would be a good time!

The primary attraction here was the food! 'Rodizio' is a Brazillian style of serving all you can eat, where they keep coming around to the table offering everything they have on hand, and it did not disappoint!

They have the largest Japanese community outside of Japan, so the sushi was a must, and it was marvelous!

We also had a traditional Brazillian dish called feijoada. Originally a slave food, it has been adopted by Brazillian culture at large, and it is a type of stew served over rice with pork and beans. We thought it was just ok, but we're very happy we tried it!

And then, we had the Brazillian barbecue.

Served rodizio style. They had 18 cuts of meat and an amazing salad bar. It was absolutely one of, if not the best thing we had to eat on the entire trip! It even gave the Argentinian barbecue a run for its money!

We relaxed by the pool, saw Batman's Alley, visited the huge city park a couple of times, went to a couple of museums, and most of all, here we reminisced about what an incredible adventure had had.

There were lots of mixed emotions here. Happiness, sadness, but, most of all, immense gratitude for having been to have such an incredible honeymoon together.

We headed home from here, full of excitement and nervousness for what lay ahead, and full of joy from the experience in South America - the places, the sights, the sounds, the food, the people - all of it was amazing, it exceeded every expectation we had!

      Ilhabela

      June 29, 2023 in Brazil ⋅ 🌧 19 °C

We spent a few days on the beautiful island of Ilhabela (which literally means beautiful island). We got to eat some good food and do some relaxing. We had 3 main adventure days while in Ilhabela.

Our first big adventure was to a lovely waterfall. We had only a short 30 minute hike from the bus stop to the waterfall. The waterfall itself was stunning and very unique. It looked like a giant water slide and I got to swim at the bottom of it! Midway through our journey to the falls we were treated with an absolute downpour. While the weather wasn't ideal it did mean we got the whole waterfall to ourselves. Honestly there was something really epic about swimming in a waterfall in the pouring rain surrounded by rainforest in Brazil.

Our 2nd and 3rd adventure days were journeying to and from Bonete Beach. This is a beach rated as one the best ones to visit in Brazil; however, it is only accessible by hiking or boating. We decided to hike there and boat back. The hike was through the rainforest which made it very beautiful. That being said it was challenging as it was long. We hiked 2km to the bus stop, 2km from the bus stop to the trail head, 15km on the trail, and at least 1km strolling up and down the beach. After at least 20km of walking that day I was very tired but it was worth it. The beach was so stunning with a long stretch of soft sand surrounded by mountains and rainforest. It was also so secluded that you had the beauty almost all to yourself. We spent that night and the next day walking on the beach, swimming in the waves, and just relaxing. We then had the boat ride back which I pictured being a nice calm ride where I do some whale watching and take photos of the island from the water; however this was not the case. Instead, we had an adrenaline pumping thrill ride on this tiny speed boat where we were sitting on a foam mat on the floor. We were bouncy up and down on the wavy water, getting soaked by water splashing over the edge, and I was gripping the side of the boat for dear life. Angus didn't find it scary and the people driving the boat were very professional so we really weren't in danger. That being said, I still found it a very stressful ride so needless to say, no photos were taken on the boat and if med school doesn't work out, a backup plan of a pirates life will not be for me. Although the boat ride was intense, it was worth it for the views. Honestly some of the most stunning views of the island (just take my word for it)!

Overall we really enjoyed Ilhabela and it was a destination we weren't originally planning to visit due to time constraints. Very glad we were able to adjust our schedule to fit it in because it is a truly special place.

      WASSER ÜBERALL

      September 2, 2023 in Brazil ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Read more
