      Mit dem Flugzeug geht es nach Quito, der Hauptstadt von Ecuador. Die Stadt liegt auf 2850m Höhe und ist damit die höchstgelegene Hauptstadt der Welt. Mein Hostel bietet eine free Walking Tour an und die wirklich sehr informativ ist und wir probieren verschiedene kulinarische Sachen. Zum Abschluss der Tour gibt es noch ecuadorianische Schokolade.
      Am nächsten Tag fahre ich mit der Seilbahn auf 4000m Höhe. Dort hat man einen tollen Ausblick über Quito und kann sogar mehrere der Vulkane sehen die die Stadt umgeben. Von der Gondelstation mache ich eine kleine Wanderung auf einen Berg. Es geht nochmal bis auf ungefähr 4700m Höhe. Der höchste Ort, wo ich bisher gewesen bin. Obwohl die Wanderung nur relativ kurz ist, ist sie sehr anstrengend vorallem auch wegen der Höhe.      Read more

      Seit 2 Tagen sind wir nun in Quito, der Hauptstadt Ecuadors. Sie liegt auf 2850 m Höhe und ist damit auch die Höchste Hauptstadt der Welt. Sie liegt in einem relativ schmalen Tal, das nur wenige Kilometer breit ist. Dennoch sind hier über 3.2 Mio. Menschen zuhause. Aufgrund des schmalen Tals zieht sich die Stadt gut 50 km in die Länge.
      Quito hat viele schöne Sehenswürdigkeiten und eine sehr schöne Altstadt, die als erstes ins UNESCO Weltkulturerbe aufgenommen wurde. Außerdem gibt es hier unglaublich viele Kirchen, regelrechte Prunkbauten mit viel Gold verziert. Es ist allgemein auffällig wie gläubig die Menschen in Südamerika sind.
      Da Quito fast genau auf dem Äquator liegt, ist das Wetter trotz der hohen Lage immer sehr angenehm. Jedoch ist die Sonneneinstrahlung ziemlich aggressiv und man sollte sich gut eincremen.

      Quito, Ecuador...the Centre of the Earth

      So we finally got here..whoop 😁🙌 I say this because we had trouble landing in Quito as we flew in, the tubulance was terrible, probably with the city being in middle of so many high volcanoes the wind were too strong to land... And everyone on board made that very clear, it was like being on a roller-coaster were everyone screams as you start to go down 🎢🙄😂 it's funny now but was pretty scary at the time. We attempted 2 landings in different airports and both were too turbulent to land in, finally landing in Guayaquil about 30mins away, we had to wait about and 1hr 30mins on the and here so they could try again in Quito. Luckily 3rd time lucky we landed 😊✈️ and everyone applauded the pilots 😊👍 so on our first day we took a guided tour around the historical city centre where we're staying. We visited the markets where you can buy any part of an animal that you want, herbs / flowers for wishing away those bad spirits within or just pick up some local fresh fruit and veg! Also you can get lunch for just $1 either the veg option or the cow stomach soup if your feeling adventurous 😏 we also tried the traditional edcudorian warm corn drink... As they love their sugar it tasted like rice pudding... Yum 😋 we also got to try alcoholic sweets that apparently the women of Quito started to make when alcohol was prohibited back in the day, so they could secretly get drunk at gatherings without any notice of any alcohol consumption through drinking! The tour took us through many historic buildings and old secret courtyards, where locals used to have private gatherings to prevent too much noise for their neighbours and also for privacy (alot of the streets are very narrow and close together, so these courtyards were a perfect solution!). We also visited some of the most ornately decorated churches and monstrosities in South America. Especially San Francisco Church which is decorated head to toe in gold leaf on the interior!Read more

      Quito Walking Tour

      At the end of our walking tour we decided to explore more of the old streets near to where we are staying... In the day time of course as it actually quite a rough area in the evenings! 😳 We quickly saw the warning signs when we initially arrived to our hostel on the first evening and we were greeted by a bouncer on the gated door, he warned us not to venture the side streets around us at night and not to walk to the virgin Mary statue as most people get mugged! But aside the warnings its still a nice area in the day 😊😁 so good to venture and grab some lunch on the old streets.Read more

      Ankunft in Ecuador 🇪🇨

      In der höchst gelegenen Hauptstadt der Welt, Quito, wurden wir nach einer kurzen Taxifahrt herzlich in unserem Hotel begrüsst. Jeder Raum wurde individuell gestaltet und ist mit Wandmalereien verziert. Unser Zimmer heisst Mochica und wir fühlen uns trotz des riesigen Drachens an der Wand pudelwohl hier.

      Die Stadt liegt 2850 M.ü.M. und wir werden von leichten Kopfschmerzen geplagt. Zudem ist es recht kühl hier und das Wetter ändert gefühlt stündlich.

      Die erste Erkundungstour in der Altstadt überraschte uns auf viele Weisen. Wenn wir an Kolumbien denken, erinnern wir uns an laute, lebendige Strassen voller meist glücklich lachender Menschen, die uns mit ihrem Lachen mitrissen. In Quito hingegen ist es sehr ruhig, es hat viel weniger Menschen auf den Strassen und wir fühlen uns nicht so wilkommen. Die Menschen gehen ihren Alltagsgeschäftigkeiten mit ernsten Gesichtern nach und es sind viele Geschäftsleute (in viel zu grossen Anzügen) unterwegs. Auf dem Plaza Grande beobachteten wir bei einem Cappucchino die fleissigen Schuhputzern bei Ihrer Arbeit und die älteren Menschen auf den vielen Bänken bei Ihren regen Diskussionen untereinander. Die Altstadt Quitos wurde auf Inka Ruinen aufgebaut und gehört mit seinen Gebäuden aus der Zeit der spanischen Kolonisierung zum Weltkulturerbe. Es finden sich viele Kirchen, Kathedralen und begrünte Plätze in der Stadt.

      Wir schlenderten auch durch die Basílica del Voto Nacional und bewunderten die unglaubliche Architektur. Das Gebäude ist für seine Wasserspeier in Form von einheimischen ecuadorianischen Tieren wie Gürteltieren, Leguanen und Galapagosschildkröten bekannt.

      Später am Nachmittag fuhren wir zu einem Friseur, da es wieder Mal Zeit für einen Haarschnitt war. Dieses Mal war Rocco sehr zufrieden mit Oscar und wir durften uns mit einem Ugly Smile Sticker auf einem der Spielautomaten in seinem Coiffeur/Tattoo Salon verewigen.

      Am Abend gab es leckeres indisches Curry in einem Restaurant, in welchem wir die einzigen Gäste waren.😂

      Heute stehen für mich ein paar Geschäftsbesuche an, denn sogar KRONI hat einen Kunden in Quito und ein paar Interessenten die einen Besuch wünschen. 😃 Ich bin gespannt was mich erwartet.

      Übermorgen fliegen wir bereits weiter auf Santa Cruz, Galapagos. Wir freuen uns sehr, diesen Traum verwirklichen zu dürfen.      Read more

      Notre acclimatation Équatorienne s’est faite à Quito, sa capitale de 44 km de long par 10 de large.

      Les quiténien.nes sont aussi accueillants que les Colombiens, leur soupe au moins aussi bonne et leurs montagnes encore plus hautes.

      Day 10

      Attitude adjustment

      Yesterday, I was upset, scared and alone. I couldn't even find my way back to the hotel and spent all evening and today trying to sort out this mess. I seriously considered going straight back to the airport. Anyhow, nothing much has changed but I am hoping for a breakthrough next week.

      So, I decided to put on my big girl pants and go and explore again today. No photos for the obvious reason. I think I may just buy some postcards and photo them!

      I passed a police station and reported the theft and then, passed a barber shop, and got my head shaved.... As has been on the To Do list for 3 years.

      The poor barber, Tutu, has never shaved a woman before and kept checking in in case I changed my mind. He was unsure, and kept saying I can't believe you are doing this.

      To be fair, I did get a lot of stares in the street after, and possibly some giggles. The ladies here have long, plush, black hair and I certainly stand out.

      I got some local nosh, what I got was not what I expected but interesting anyway :-)

      I even got a top up for my new SIM card so feeling quite proud of my bounce back.      Read more

      Der Rosenmontag in Quito hatte keinen Umzug und auch keine Tanzgruppen, dafür Menschenmassen in der historischen Altstadt, die sich mit klebrigem Schaum aus Dosen besprühen. Wir sind in die Kathedrale geflüchtet, obwohl wir eigentlich keine Kirchen mehr anschauen wollten. Wir haben es nicht bereut - man konnte über enge Treppen auf's Kirchendach klettern und Frank endlich mal den James Bond geben 😎 Quitos Altstadt besteht nur aus Kirchen, Klöstern und Palästen, natürlich wieder auf den Resten der alten Inka-Stadt gebaut. Davon hatten wir in Cusco genug, also auf in einen der vielen Parks, wo das Bond-Girl mit Alexander von Humboldt posieren durfte. Auf der Suche nach einer Abend-Kneipe dann die Überraschung: Cherusker - braut in Ecuador nach dem deutschen Reinheitsgebot 🍻 Und nein, wir haben weder Jägerschnitzel noch Sauerkraut gegessen, sondern Nachos 😋 dazu ein Vulkan-Bier und schon ist man auf dem Feuerring 🌋😅Read more

      Our journey from Mindo was delayed due to locals protesting water shortages by blocking the road. Our taxi knew before we left so we didn’t leave. We did have to go through several military and police checkpoints on the road.

      We have spent our first full day in Quito site seeing. This morning we took a free walking tour with a local. The country has very few tourists at the moment - the tour had one person plus us two - before the current crisis they would have 20-40. We see very few European or American tourists here.

      Then this afternoon we visited some churches including climbing the towers. Here we felt the altitude (2850m) climbing the 200 steps. The views over the city were good. Then we went up the hill with the largest aluminium sculpture on top - the Virgin Mary - overlooking the city. Well more accurately overlooking the rich part of the city. She has her back to the poorer districts!

      The city is a UNESCO world heritage site partly for the architecture but also the human traditions which are a melting pot of different indigenous groups.

      Tomorrow if the weather is good we plan to take the cable car to 3,945m and then do some birdwatching and a hike possibly to a new altitude record of 4680m.      Read more
