      Progress!

      15. april 2023, Frankrig ⋅ 🌬 19 °C

Today is our 5th day on the boat and all is proceeding well with only minor hiccups and a few 🤬!
On day one after the boat went into the water, we got the engine going (tempoarily), the dodger and bimini up, the solar panels in and powering up and the living quarters emptied of sails and organized. The engine overheated which required Bob to don his diesel mechanic hat to repair, to no avail.
Day 2: The Volvo mechanic came, blew into the in/outtake tubes, added some grease, et voilà, success! 10 minutes and €€! Bob had done the correct repairs, he just didn't know the tricks of the trade in spite of having a lot of hot air!😁🤪
Bob worked on the mast, putting it together and sorting stays and lines while I was the swabbie, cook and general gofer.
Day 3: More of the same.
Day 4: Mast on! Stays attached and tightened so the mast won't fall over 😬 👍.
Today the boom, and the lines are on but we do not dare to add the sails or we may take flight!
The weather has been sunny with temp. from 5C at night to 22C but the wind!😯🤯💨💨💨 It blows 22-50 kms! Today we've reached +55 kms! I've told Bob we'll be staying at the dock until the wind slows down. Peut-être un mois???! Fortunately there are no waves although we woke up one morning at 0300 hrs. being tossed and turned. We leapt out of bed to rescue parts topside before they rolled into the sea!
The 6km (round trip) by 🚲 to the grocery store is a challenge due to the wind but easy returning as the wind carries us home!
Electricity is at a premium so only items under 500W can be plugged in. I figured out our heater worked after suffering a couple of nights/mornings and a cold 🚽 seat! 🥶 Sadly, the hairblower wattage is too much so I am back to my Medusa-like coiffure and Bob looks like he's been electrocuted!
Bob the Barista has been re-employed under the threat of mutiny or keel-hauling, depending on the hierarchy of the day!
We've met some lovely people, U.K., Swiss, Dutch and French. We enjoyed drinks at the yacht club and were questioned whether we were true sailors after stopping at 1 🍺 (to their 5!)
The boatyard has a huge number (1000) of boats on land here in various states of seaworthiness, including 1 each from Quebec and Halifax! Catamarans seem to be the most common. The town has a harbour full of boats and there is another huge boatyard down the road. The town is typically French: shops close over lunch and on Sundays.
Experiencing today's terrifying wind, I'm beginning to wonder whether canal cruising and stopping at cafes/pubs is the life for me?!

      Strandzeit

      29. marts, Frankrig ⋅ 🌬 17 °C

      What a difference...

      19. april 2023, Frankrig ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Waking up Monday morning was a dream as the wind had dropped and it was calm and quiet! No howling, screeching, whistling wind, no whitecaps on the water and the boat was steady and level. We were able to get so much done in one day: both sails on, reconnected the bilge pump, swabbed the deck of salt and grit, rebuilt and installed the windvane and installed the depth sounder/speedometer. This last exercise required us to remove a plug in the bottom of the boat letting the sea 🌊 in 😬 and replacing the plug with the instrument. I expected a geyser to shoot upward soaking and blinding us while the boat filled...but it flowed in gently to sea level and we plugged it without difficulty and only a bit of water to sponge up.
We've met a lovely 🇬🇧 couple and have shared 2 evenings and a game of Mexican train. They are heading west in their catamaran to the Canal de Midi up to Bordeaux and we are heading East. We'll share 1 more evening tomorrow with them and their guests. We are awaiting 2 deliveries then we'll set off towards Marseille provided Le Mistral wind doesn't blow again!

      Morjeee!

      2. august 2022, Frankrig ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Ekola!

Salz so weit das Auge reicht

      1. juli 2023, Frankrig ⋅ 🌬 25 °C

      Mediterra-non!

      16. april, Frankrig ⋅ 🌬 17 °C

The Via Rhona (EV17) reaches the sea in Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône. I had decided to instead go to the coastal town of Port-du-Bouc instead for it's train station. Just a small deviation of a few kms.

This led us down a section that was totally industrial, and desolate. And ended in a ramp on to a national highway. I didn't want to ride with Kiran down the highway. Or another track that just led nowhere.

We were stranded 10 km from the Mediterranean. But the road said Non!

After much circling around and screaming at the map and clutching my hair, we had to accept that there was no (safe) way forward. So we looked to the setting sun, and decided to retrace our way back to the original route. We were tired, but Kiran stayed strong and said we'll be ok to ride more.

The highway here completely bisects the land west of and east of the Marseille port. This is what land fragmentation is and cuts ecosystems and landscapes asunder.

      Bonjour Camargue

      25. december 2023, Frankrig ⋅ 🌙 9 °C

Ich will rauuus! 🤣

Gerne.

      Getting settled

      14. december 2019, Frankrig ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

Well we have been here over two weeks already and although the weather hasn’t been great it’s been a lot better than in Guernsey. We have put up our Christmas decorations inside and out. We are the only decorated boat in the marina. At the moment we have some more liveaboard boats but not sure if they are just here to avoid the SE Gale/storm we are experiencing, they are all french and we hardly ever we the residents.
Thank you to those who sent us new Christ decorations, we love them.
I have also attached a photo of me in the finished pullover thing I knitted. It doesn’t look quite like the pattern photo it’s bigger as I knit very loosely even though I used a smaller size needle and pattern to compensate. In its favour it is lovely and warm.
Last Friday we headed back to Martigues by bus to go to the DIY store for various things but primarily wood so John could build a folding table around the Missen mast tabernacle. Unfortunately our Martigues luck, or lack of, was holding out as after over an hours journey we got to the store to find out that for technical reasons their wood saw was out of action. At least the trip only cost €4in total, well and lunch of course but a person has to eat. The nearby hypermarket was doing a deal on some GF biscuits so we saved the cost of the trip in biscuits. We also bought some new sheets as ours were a bit grubby and even whitener was no longer making the grade. The other thing we had hoped to buy at the DIY store was Perspex to replace the panel that the wind blew out 2weeks ago, and we thought we had done it until, John double checked his measuring (after we had paid) and realised it was too small to we had to return that at least we hadn’t carried it home.
A bit of luck we have had is that on one of forays to the beach we saw a long scaffold board and later in the day when John went back a saw it was still there so he reduced the length to 8foot and cycled back with it, carefully.
There is also a photo of some more scavenging finds. We are still collecting plastic bottles and other rubbish each time we get to the beach to the amazement of the locals.
John is again back in the engine room doing something semi technical and as I did the washing yesterday I am looking for things to do. I have some sewing projects but am waiting for the market tomorrow to buy some grey thread for the new liner curtain, and for new needles before I tackle the table cover, as material quite strong.
I have however made my own GF vegetarian mincemeat and then some mince pies using shop bought GF pastry, they aren’t bad, but as no more GF pastry until we return to Martigues I need to try making that as well as have lots of mincemeat left over. It ridiculous what you consider doing if you are bored enough.

      Salin de Giraud Teil I

      27. april 2023, Frankrig ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

      INFOTEXT

      Christmas Eve

      24. december 2019, Frankrig ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Hello Everyone, we hope you have enjoyed the Festive buildup and have a great next couple of days.
Today has been bright and breezy p, this seems to be the most usual weather phenomenon here so as we had done all our food shopping yesterday we decided to go for a ride and this time we headed up the Rhone rather than down it towards the beach. We rode to the Bac Baccarin and took the ferry across the Rhône to Salin de Giraud. The decision to take the ferry was a bit last minute when we realised it was free for us and our bikes. We didn’t have the iPad so I have found some photos from the internet to show what we saw the horse were grazing in the fairly waterlogged field on our way up to the ferry and Bar de Sport is where we stopped for a hot chocolate sitting outside soaking up a bit of sun. We would have explored the town and surrounds a little more but we had no idea when the last ferry was and didn’t want to end up stranded on the wrong side of the river for Christmas.
We have invited a French friend Nicholas to join us for Christmas lunch and are planning a Festive dip before hand, that we will remember the iPad for with its waterproof cover! So we need to be a bit organised so the poor guy isn’t waiting till 6 for his lunch.
      HAPPY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE
