      A German train disaster

      June 18, 2022 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 63 °F

Leaving Germany feels so weird! We had the German Airbnb’s booked so early that it seems like time is going so fast. We of course booked Prague like 2 days in advance, never learning our lessons on this trip. We went to villingen once more to find the pasta Anna has been thinking about for 6 years, success! And to get a postcard because the store was closed last time we went, failure! It was closed again because we savored our pasta just a bit too long. I guess the world doesn’t want us to have a postcard from villingen. We then took a train 20 minutes only to sit at the tiny Immigingen train station for HOURS. It was the hottest day in recent times too which meant following the shadows as the sun kept sneaking into my little concrete space. Finally made it to the hostel in Munich which will be our stop over before Prague. Luckily the room is just us, no snorers!Read more

      Spritzer girls

      June 15, 2022 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 66 °F

After getting lunch at a little market selling brats we went back to the room and then me and Anna went up the hill near our place to see this weird little castle thing. Later on we met up for dinner and drinks with Nadine. We also stopped at the river and hopped in to cool off as we had our swimsuits on. It was brisk and we only lasted a little while but we got to say we had a little dip in the Freiburg stream, not just swing over it! We had Hugo’s (elderflower spritzers) lillet spritzers (lillet wine), and aperol spritzers. I had the best salty peanut flavored gelato too. Started and ended this day with gelato, as earlier I had raspberry.Read more

      Booty workout number 3000

      June 13, 2022 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 61 °F

Fresh croissants for breakfast and then a bunch of walking made for the beginning of a typical day in the life of the 3 Europa amigas. We wanted to see this tower that Freiburg is famous for but what we didn’t know was that the tower was on the top of a steep hill. Get those legs working ladies. We climbed the hill, stopping for a photo shoot and a slide (I think there was surprise poop smeared in that slide, might be worse than surprise hot dogs), but the show must go on. Then we walked over 200 stairs to get to the bottom of the probably 100+ stairs tower itself. A great view on a clear day though!Read more

Social dancing in the town square

      June 17, 2022 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 59 °F

When we got up this morning we weren’t expecting to be at breakfast for over 3 hours but that’s how it went. Our early morning (at least by our standards) turned into getting going past 1pm anyway. The poor waitress was all by herself and it was a packed place, also Anna’s food didn’t come the first time and she had to reorder. We got some souvenirs and played around in the book store. We also witnessed a very unique flash mob type skit that I think was saying Jesus will save you but it was hard to tell, especially as I was focused on the girl who fainted mid performance and no one even seemed to blink an eye? So strange, but it is a hot day, I don’t blame her. Then we went to the town square where Nadine told us every night they do a social dance class and then everyone just dances together after that. It was so fun, and me and Anna got asked to dance with a couple different people. Even though we didn’t do the class and didn’t know how it was so fun!Read more

      Besuch in Freiburg

      October 20, 2022 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

      Freiberg

      July 21, 2022 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

After a chance to put our feet up, we wandered out into Freiburg. We ended up mostly shoe-shopping for B who broke both his walking shoes and his action sandals on the same day! The river was awash with people paddling in the stepped pools that ran down it, making it a super site to cool off in the 38° heat. We, however, went to the Ganter bar on the plaza around the cathedral and ordered a metre of beer! We were treated to the lovely church bells, an accordionist and a cellist during our drinks, before retiring to plan the next fews days.

      Freiburg

      May 27, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Freunde verabschieden in Freiburg i. Br.

      May 6, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

      November 25, 2023 in Germany ⋅ 🌧 5 °C

Read more

    • Day 4

      Freiburg

      September 6, 2022 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Had an early start from baden baden to head towards Freiburg for 2 nights. After a 5hr 30 drive with a brief fuel and peach ice tea stop, we made a small detour for a dip in lake Opfinger See. Lovely lake with many ducks and geese. The latter doing many belly flops into the lake. Not the most graceful of birds. Arrived at Buses campsite just after 2pm, approx. 5km from Freiburgs city centre. Having parked and unloaded the bikes we headed for the city with separated bike paths the entire way. We wish ireland was more like this.

We parked the bikes at the augustinerplatz and started to explore. This involved some beers, flamkuchen (a German pizza style flatbread) for jo, and schnitzel for bill, coffees, and our first look at the Freiburger Münster Cathedral. Completed in the Middle Ages, it miraculously has lasted till the present, surviving the bombing raids of November 1944, which destroyed all of the houses on the west and north side of the market. An impressive structure with a 116m spire and its oldest surving 3.27tonne bell, hosanna. Nobody seems to know who is the maker and there is no other like it known.

We add climbing the spire to tomorrow's list and continue on exploring the beautiful streets, shops and making the odd stop at any interesting bars we find along the way. Find a great little bar called Schnatnel where we discovered 'Colawein' a Cola/beer radler (will definitely be making these in the future) and sat outside next to a little table on the ground amongst 'The Freiburg Bächle'. Fed by the Dreisam River, the water runnels flow through countless narrow streets in Freiburg’s Old Town.
Since the 12th century, the flat paved gutters supplied the city with water for drinking, fighting fires and other uses. According to local legend, any single person who accidentally stumbles into a Bächle will go on to marry a Frieburger. Luckily, we managed to avoid.

Having had one last stop in 'Flamingo' a very cool punk bar on our cycle home, we headed back to the campsite around midnight with a lovely new souvenir, a 'Ganter' local breweries glass in tow.

We wake up a little worse for wear around 8.45 and have a relaxed morning involving showers, coffee, and more coffee, and finally some van admin before setting off for the city again.

Our first stop is back to the main square munsterplatz, a market directly outside the cathedral as i had heard about (and was very excited about) a tofu van that sold apparently excellent vegan bratwurst, and was not dossappinted. Bill had a non vegan bratwurst, (which he was also very happy about) and we manged to find a tiny corner of shade to eat them in with some coffee/iced rhubarb lemonade.

We then climbed the almost 300 steps to the top of the cathedral spire, just in time to hear and see the bells ringing. Amazing views from the top accross the city and over to schlossberg.

The rest of the day involved a little shopping, some out there cocktails and seeing many of the various sites accross the city including the blue bridge, the old Synagogue plaza and memorial fountain, the University and the lively student centred Sedan District.

After a some food and a beer we cycled back to the campsite to sit outside with a glass of wine, until the rain arrived informing us that it was time for bed.
