    HOME

December 31, 2022 in the United States

Found our lounge and sat there for several hours. It had the best hot food selection we have had and also a really good dessert section.
Salads were all pre mixed though - everywhere else was better as you could make your own which I think is better for me.
Less obvious booze section too not that either of us have used it.
So many kids in the lounge.
Peak anxiety as we lined up to board. Will is absolutely shattered. Im better but would have a massive cry if we got denied entry again.
It’s face recognition to get on the plane, no documents needed. I went first and honestly when the gates opened it was the best feeling. We’re going home 😭😭
At least 5 kids near us. It’s an overnight flight so hopefully they crash out.
We think maybe a lot of people have been upgraded.
Maybe they are feeling nice because it’s New Years lol
They made a comment about you can switch seats after take off because lots of free seats and not everyone has been given pajamas? They were cross checking a list so we though maybe if you didn’t originally pay the $5000 no pajamas for you! 😆
We have put in our orders off the menu, so keen to go to bed, hopefully served quickly.

I ate dinner and crashed for about 3 hours but then I woke up and I was SO HOT I had to go to the bathroom to put water on my arms.
I then went back to sleep but not nearly as deeply. Woke up often but overall I reckon I got 6 hours sleep which I’m stoked about.

It’s currently 2.5 hours to go and we are keeeeeeen.
We got given Australian entry cards. I really though they stopped them, I have no memory of doing them the last few trips and nor does Will. 🤷🏼‍♀️ we have to declare Wills/Craig’s cigarettes.
You have to declare if you have over 25… that’s one pack.. doesn’t seem like very much lol.

Will slept 6 hours too. He has been converted to a business man he tells me 🙄

Watched some of the Harry Reunion even though I’ve seen it. I had the kings speech on for 30 seconds before I realized it went for 15 mins longer than the flight and it would annoy me to be so close and not finish so I turned it off. Might watch for a movie night cause it’s a fab movie.

    11 minutes until landing!!
WE GET TO SEE LITTLE DOG!!!!!
And everyone else, of course. 😅😆😆😆😆

Changed out of my Pjs. So happy I have 2 sets haha. Even Will is gonna keep his.
It’s hard to get changed in the toilets. The business is the same as economy. No much room, especially when changing pants.

I get a eyebrow/forehead pimple on 80% of long haul flights. Today is no different. One has made its appearance. Pleased the flight to the wedding was in the 20%!

I write this as the plane shakes from turbulence. Haaaaaate.

UPDATE - on the drive home dad mentioned a UA flight that had to do an emergency landing in Pago Pago due to an engine failure.

THE PLANE UA 839 WAS THE ONE WE WERE MEANT TO BE ON.
No longer mad at our circumstances.
Thank you God. What a miracle. I would have had to get a boat back to Australia.

    HOME ❤️❤️❤️❤️

  • Day 79

    Hollywood

December 31, 2022 in the United States

Got up quite early considering we went to bed 1am.
Up by 8:30 and was at the restaurant for breakfast by 9.
Our vouchers were for $15 each. Bill ended up being $50 so we owed $20.
But we mustn’t forget the $10 tip 🙃
I have my receipt of $29.37 ready to send to British airways as well as a picture of the menu with nothing under $15 ✌🏼
I had pancakes and they were good.
We then got an Uber to Hollywood Boulevard because why waste our time here. It’s gonna cost us a lot but there are people out there who would kill to be able to afford to visit Hollywood.
And we are here for free so let’s get going.
Uber wasn’t actually all that bad.
$24 and it took us over 30 minutes on highways.
There was a homeless man at the corner of a road ad he made me tear up as we were driving away.
I would have given him all of our $10 if I could. His little sign said anything is enough and I just 😭😭😭
He was so sad. A sort of hopelessness that I wouldn’t be surprised if he killed himself in the next week.
    Shattered for him.

Dropped us off and we went immediately to a souvenir shop to get a magnet so we can reminisce over this terrific experience.
Didn’t find the pink star magnet I envisioned so went walking to look elsewhere.
Lots of big name stars (obviously 🥴) but still a good chunk I didn’t know from different eras.
Found a fluro pink star. Not the pink I wanted (or that’s on literally every other tourist item) but will do.
The stars are technically red and white marble but mixed it makes a pink colour.
We went to McDonald’s to steal their Wi-Fi and wet hunting for a props museum. On the way we took a closer look at the famous Chinese theatre where all the famous people do their hands and footprints. Lots of great ones - Harry Potter, Twilight, Avengers, Star Wars and Hunger Games casts.
I’m sure Big Bang did one but couldn’t find it.
Other huge names like Michael Jackson, Robin Williams, George Clooney, Johnny Depp etc.
Really enjoyed this and glad we went back because we walked straight past it the first time haha.

Found the prop museum and it was a real highlight my only complain is it was guided tour and he went through soooo fast. I’m trying to take pictures here!!! 😆
$20 each and just great. Really great.
Highlights were Orc heads from Lord of the Rings (75% one was the one that ends up on the spike in the second movie) Dinosaurs from Jurassic Park, Katniss’ suit, Voldemort’s Robes and screen wand, Luke Skywalkers light saber from VI, some aliens from ‘Men in Black’, Anthony Hopkins mask and straight jacket from Silence of the Lambs, Jack Nicolson’s axe and jacket from ‘The Shining’, the Walking Dead zombie heads, Robin Williams’ Mrs Doubtfire costume, Christopher Lloyds back to the future costume and remote, the baby grinch in a high chair and lots of Marvel stuff like Thors Hammer and Iron man’s suit.
    We had a great time.

We then decided because here, let’s go to the wax museum. It was $35 each for the wax museum and Guinness records museum or $30 for one so we bought the double wammy ticket even if expensive.
It was so unbelievably bad that I’m not even mad. It’s past the point of being ripped off that’s it’s funny.
Lady in front of us was seething 😆
Could at least tell who 70% of the wax figures were meant to be but half of them I had just seen the real prop down the road on a better figuring 😆😆
Oh man it was bad. We went through quite quickly.
Then walked across the road to the Guinness book of records museum. EVEN WORSE 😆😆😆😆
Outdated info and so much writing and all interactive which I don’t enjoy. We did play a game where we threw balls at a target and had to fill up a digital water cup. We played 2 times but don’t know why this was even in the museum.
Only 3 things I like was the bit on the oldest man, tallest man and fastest 100m in high heels which was 14 seconds and I reckon that’s bloody impressive.
    Garage. Top level garbage.

Called an Uber. Driver was ultra dumb and opinionated.
Favourite comment was he didn’t like somewhere because there are too many white people.
World is wicked racist yes, but it is reversible and if you can’t say it one way you shouldn’t be able to say it the other.
I would never say don’t go there because there are too many black people.
    Racism doesn’t fix racism.
He was Caucasian looking but probably actually Hispanic.
He had lots of opinions on Australia that were wrong but we were polite. No getting shot today.
Took us to the Petersen automotive museum.

    Something that never happens happened.
Waiting in line and a guy was like I have an extra ticket, do you guys want it?
YES PLEASE. BLESS YOU KIND STRANGER.

I don’t know what we looked at.
Cars. Lots of cars. Will had the best time and got all hot and bothered about so many of them but to me… we saw cars. That’s it hahaha
It had a few from movies that I liked like the delirium from back to the future and the van from scooby doo.
    Hyercars was Wills favourite section.

Caught an Uber back to the hotel.
Not a bad crack - 4 museum and a walk down the boulevard.
I’m trying not to be bitter we didn’t realize the Hollywood museum was right around the corner cause it has most of the other big props. Would have loved to go there too. Next time.

Went to lunch in the Resturant. Our bill was 52c and he didn’t ask for a tip because he never gave us a pen to write one. We wrote one at the end but don’t know how it works so don’t know if he gets it. Not mad if he gets it, he was nice.

Sitting in our room. Have a new dog situation update but need to talk with everyone once home.

Checked out and headed to the airport on the shuttle bus.

Went to check in. “Errr we can’t find your booking, our system says you flew out last night”
    BRUH.
They did find it and we checked in. It should not be this hard, why don’t the systems talk to each other???
No dog sniffer tonight and customs still very quick. I was a little nervous their system was going to say you left America last night…
But we got through so that’s a relief.
Customs people are so rude. I understand it must be the most infuriating job because people are the worst but they just yell at you.
2 different Asian men got screamed at for not following instructions and workers were all attitude like “it’s not that hard” blah blah blah.
Very blatantly obvious neither man spoke fluent English. Yelling is pointless.
Yell at me in French I won’t understand, doesn’t matter how loud you are, volume is not the reason I’m not listening.
Also American, your customs are not the universal system. Shoes off isn’t an everywhere thing and he isn’t stupid for not knowing he is meant to do that.

    Transit

    December 29, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

    Great mood this morning.
    We are off! 🎉
Will was so excited he even packed last night. 😆
Had a quick rinse in the shower then we were off.
Walked to Piccadilly Circus then got the tube to the airport.
We judged how much to put on our Oyster cards really well. Only about 3£ each left in the end.
The train took about an hour and I was 80% sure on what terminal. Terminal 5.
    Got it right ✌🏼
I’m very overwhelmed with all the documentation.
Since booking our flight details have changed 4 or 5 times - we booked with American Airlines but are flying British airways and Qantas.
They all have different booking references and flight time and I honestly just don’t know where we are meant to be.
Waited an hour so we could check in with a real person.

    “I’m sorry I can’t find your booking”

    Off to a cracking start.

British airways sent me an email about uploading Covid documents so I at least had my booking reference for them so he found it.
Didn’t look very hard did you. 🙃
    Never had that happened before.

Next good news - our flight is delayed and we will miss our connection. 🫠🫠🫠🫠

I am very uncomfortable about everything.
I don’t trust our check in guy.
Have accepted we will miss flight which our boarding passes say leaves LA at 8:45pm, so we have looked at other possible Qantas flights tonight they could put us on and there is 2 others at 10:30.

Except 10:30 is the one we are meant to be on????? And everybody’s website except our boarding pass says 10:30 departure not 8:45????
It’s still tight but could we make it?
Only now even less likely because we have to collect our bags because the dude was like you land after departure, go get your bags and go straight to the help desk when you arrive.
Clarified with him 5 times that our bags are not going straight through.
“No you must collect at LA”
Ok. Gotcha. (Stay tuned for different story)

    I am so confused 😭😭😭
How could you not find out booking? Have you put us on a different flight I don’t understandddddddd

I’d rather miss is outright cause we hadn’t arrived because they have to fix rather than a gray area of “well you were quick enough” and it becomes our fault.

Check in man originally said he couldn’t print our 2 boarding passes because second flight is moot but both were printed and I’m glad it says a departure time after our arrival. It will be my ‘Exhibit A’ when arguing why we didn’t hurry to make it.
Because we can’t prove any of the conversation we had with the check in man. 👍🏼

Considering all the strikes, the airport wasn’t busy at all.
It also had a feature we both liked which was pictures of little people depicting how busy the North and South security lines were. North way busier than south most of the time.
We found a business lounge but the guy was like go to the other one it’s better.
So we caught a tram one stop.
Lounge was lovely, got super comfy seats.
    Lots of yummy food.
I love that you can make your own drinks. Could have a whole bottle of vodka if you wanted.
I made my own nachos with a mountain of sour cream. Person behind me was waiting.
Hang on a minute please I’m busy 😆
Also had some tomato/cucumber with balsamic 🤤
    Their mashed potato was crap.

    So confused I can’t even.
I’m so angry about the communication.
American Airlines saying we leave at 6:30, British airlines and airport saying 5:30.
American Airlines saying we arrive 6:35pm. British have given no time but my automated email from flight center is saying 8:50pm.
    These are very different.

Eventually got given a gate and caught the train back to it.
    460 people on our flight.

We went and spoke to a worker because we are beyond confused and wanted some clarification.
Asked when are we arriving and he said should be 8:40.
Thank you flight center you were at least close.
    American Airlines, come on man.
We then inquired about our departing plane.
He has no idea why our ticket says 8:45 (his system does too) cause when he googled the flight number it’s 10:30.
So we have a little bit of hope.

He said our luggage ticket says our bags are going straight through to Sydney and we don’t need to collect.

Have text dad to update him with nothing really other than to say we don’t know when we will arrive.

Boarded plane and business not nearly as good as Qantas. And kids everywhere.
In fairness it has a kid vibe though. Qantas was leather seats with polished wood this is just economy with more space.
Will isn’t going to able to lie down and I’m facing backwards. Lol
I do like that I’m in a corner and near a toilet so everyone doesn’t stare at me when I go the the toilet 100 times. Lol

The entertainment on board is garbage, or rather the set up is.
No option to just show all movies? Have to search all 39 genres.
For TV it shows every episode rather than pick a series you want to watch and then it will show you the episode.
In conclusion lots of unnecessary scrolling haha.

    Have successfully taken off.
Hatteeeeeeeeee take off in an airbus. Takes too long to get in the air, I panic 😂

    Announcement over the loud speaker.
“All passengers will need to collect bags if transferring domestic or internationally”

Going to lose my shit soon. Don’t care the circumstances but can we all just agree on what that is please.

Food was delicious. Especially some cous cous thing with sour cream. Had some slow cooked beef chucks which were great too.

A worker came and told us we have been put on another flight with United airlines.
25 minutes later than our Qantas one…
Doesn’t give us that much extra wiggle room.

We want Qantas cause Will fits but I think his desire to get home for New Years trumps his fly with Qantas desires. He may regret though as we don’t know what their business looks like.
But ok, we are flying United Airlines. 💪🏻

Read lots of my book and watched a movie. Unbelievable. Normally can’t watch them on planes. But every plane this trip I have wanted to watch but not watched..
I watched ‘Good luck to you, Leo Grande’ which made me laugh out loud on the plane even though it’s not a comedy. I don’t know what you would class it as but both actors, especially Emma Thompson deserves an Oscar.

Will read some of his book. The most newsworthy event of the day really.

Alrighty. 10 mins from landing. Must rush to find people at “the top of the stairs” who will help us cause I have questions about our bags… and how we board a new plane when I don’t have a boarding pass for it.

Hope the airport has Wi-Fi so I can message dad or I’ll have to activate my sim.

My review for British airways airbus is if it was significantly cheaper to fly then Qantas I’d fly again but just the little things like my seat taking 40 pushes of the button to recline which all up genuinely took like 15 minutes. That’s fine I can deal BUT the only place for storage is under the bed in a box I can’t access to get anything out all flight cause didn’t want to deal with the bed.
No shelf to put my phone, had to put it in my shirt so it didn’t fall and get stuck in the seat. I mentioned the crap entertainment system already and my phone had been on charge for 5 hours and gone up 6%. Thankfully we don’t appear to be stranded so it should last until the next flight.
I drained a lot of it on this flight making my video which will end up being about 1h32mins 😅

But really main one is Will doesn’t fit. I fit but only just and I’m not tall.

    I have loveeeeeed my corner.

The food had been great and staff were the noticeable highlight. They have so many workers it’s great.

Am currently lying in a deliciously comfortable bed in LA -
STRAP IN FOR THE MOST RIDICULOUS EXPERIENCE.

    Got off the plane.
Found the lady we were meant to find. She gave us fluro orange express pass things and our NEW flight number of QF12
BRUUUUUUH THAT IS OUR ORIGINAL FLIGHT 🤦🏼‍♀️

I was feeling lucky because we got off the plane first we got through customs quick. If you are 450th of the plane you are going to be there a while.
Worker there didn’t care about our fluro pass. We waited. Line we picked naturally had someone before us who needed to supply a mountain of documentation.
    Hurry up. 😩
Wouldn’t have mattered anyway because then came the bag carousel drama. 20 minutes for our bags to arrive.
Then we RACED to drop them off again going off a very non detailed instructions of where to go.
To race quicker Will ripped his bag tag off.
We fixed this problem once we arrived and I didn’t let my feelings known about his decision regarding this, but honestly how stupid are you. How is your bag getting to Sydney without your tag on it????
Anyway. It still had some stick so reattached and put on the carousel.
Then had to get through customs.
I got yelled at by a lot of people and workers for going under barrier lines and running past people.
No one cared about our express signs.
Had to get sniffed by a dog, have passports checked again, do TSA, we SPRINTED through the airport sweating like pigs and arrived for our flight in time.
Told dad plan A is going ahead.

    JOKES.

Tried to get on the plane.
Gate wouldn’t open so was sent to see a worker.

British airways cancelled our booking. 🫠🫠🫠🫠
Not allowed on the plane because we have no booking.
And this guy was an absolute wanker too. Not even a fake sorry. Just a big ol tough titties attitude.
Had to force info out of him like
ok what do we do now then??
    Wasn’t his problem.
    Prick.

Sent us to British airways ticketing.
All staff left for the evening 🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠
Found one lady who found her manager who had been at the airport for over 14 hours by now who deserves a raise.
2 others in the same pickle but not going Sydney. They have NYE Fiji plans with a friend and now that friend will be celebrating alone. 😬
We were there about 1.5 hours but in that time we got booked on a delta flight for tomorrow evening at 8pm but we asked if we could be put on the later Qantas one if available as we know he fits and it’s only 2 hours different. So she went and did that for us.
Meanwhile, a man from Qantas we found (who also deserves a raise) went and found our bags for us.
He said British airways has developed quite the reputation of late and our bags were never making it even if we did.
I’ll say. Will not fly again. I have never experienced such incompetent ridiculousness.
I know I complain a lot but most of the time I don’t really mean it. I’m not actually bothered, I’m just talking crap.
But WOWWZA today has been HARD for real.

By the end we have a new Qantas flight, food vouches and accommodation for 2 nights.

Some very feral people will be joining us shortly and they have my sympathies.
In order to check if we could have 2 nights accommodation rather than one so we didn’t have to check out in the morning m, the lady called to confirm with the hotel only to find out her colleague only booked 5 rooms in the hotel for the evening when it was meant to be 7.
The lady had sent a 6th over so they will be reappearing shortly to say the hotel denied them 😬
But because of this we got put in a better hotel.
    Food vouchers for most meals.
    But gratuity not included 🙃🙃🙃
I see red when it comes to tipping, I really do. Vividly and immediately.

Caught the shuttle. Absolutely no signage asked 3 people for help but eventually found and taken to the door.

Had trouble finding our booking, but we got there.
Have checked in and eaten with food vouchers.
Didn’t tip. Will have to tip tomorrow which I’m furious about. Going to send the bill to British airways as per the instructions of the lady I think deserves a raise.

LAX is the stupidest airport. Will not fly through there again unless visiting USA.

    I’m done I tell you.
We can’t reaaaallly afford it but we have pushed our work start dates back a few days and will start on the 9th. We both need to sit without this garbage.
The stress has just been so constant.
The entire world has honestly just shat itself and hasn’t fixed itself yet. Everything has been a mess.
    Bed time.
Silver lining is Will hasn’t been to LA and we have a whole day.

    Bed time thank goodness.

Also we aren’t sure but we think someone took a piss in the sink on the plane. Very bubbly but unlikely to be champagne. No one walked in with champagne.

    Took a picture, of course.

  • Day 76

    London

    December 28, 2022 in England ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

    Last day 🎉
Went to get Will a haircut because apparently he absolutely must have one. 😂
They were booked until 2pm so we went to lunch first, back at the Indian we tried yesterday.
Walked in and definitely not the one I went to with Mum and dad. One day I will find it and I will have the yellow butter chicken again.. but not today. :(
    And it was terrible 🤣🤣🤣
    Completely covered in coriander. Disaster.
    And then just pure oil.
Whatever. Last day good vibes only. ✌🏼✌🏼🤣🤣

Went back and sat in the hotel until haircut time. Will went to that and I went souvenir browsing.
I really wanted to buy a Queen bobble head I found - I also went to a Harry potters store which is probs the best store I’ve ever been too merchandise wise. Nearly bought half the shop but walked out empty handed. Very proud of myself.
In a BIG Harry Potter mood of late because of the game coming out.
Went back to collect Will then we headed to the museums for our exhibit “Hieroglyphs: unlocking ancient Egypt”
Line less chaotic than yesterday but still long considering it was 4pm, sun pretty much set and it was raining.
    Exhibit was good.
I wish I was smarter. History is too complicated 😆😆
A few things I read I was like oh yes that rings a bell from school but man oh man, putting timelines together is hard.
We saw the Rosetta Stone, which has the same decree written in 3 languages which is how they Finley cracked the hieroglyphics code.
    ✔️✔️
They thought the pictures were stories rather than having actual phonetic sounds.
Lots of other stones and fabric scrolls with inscriptions.
    Also a section on burial.
It had one section with organs in jars which I loved 😆
“Canopic jars preserved the organs of the deceased. The inscriptions on these jars record the name of the owner, Ahmose, as well as the relevant protective deity: Imset, the human-headed god, preserved the liver, baboon-headed Hapi cared for the lungs, the falcon-headed Qebehsenuef looked after the intestines while the jackal-headed Duamutef protected the stomach. This is the first time this set of jars has been reunited since the mid-1700s.”

Uploaded a pic of the jars. A real highlight hahaha

I forgot they use to weigh the heart to determine if good or bad. Can’t remember all the details from school and the exhibit didn’t really go into it but need to follow up and re learn.

Strolled through a bit of the general Egypt sections. The museum is stupid huge. Been 4 times and I haven’t seen everything.

Went to get one last poke bowl. Can’t wait to make our own at home - then walked to parliament to have a look. Then walked home and packed.
    Bags are tiiiiight. Hahah
Also made Will do Harry Potter quiz and he got Gryffindor with Slytherin as a close second.

I went down to the Christmas markets in Leicester square and bought one final Christmas ornament with out converted 25€ because a lot of coins and can’t convert, so must spend.
And have had trouble spending cause most places have been card only.
Got a corgi with a crown cause the queen died this year.
Didn’t want a London bus or phone booth.
Will and his bowel spent some the time reacting to the oil from lunch. It came later than we expected but came nonetheless haha.

Will still hungry at 9pm so got some McDonald’s.
    Bed now.

Big day tomorrow. Hope it goes smoothly.

  • Day 75

    London

    December 27, 2022 in England ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

Slept in later than intended. Very tired lol.

Decided to do the museum first rather than laundry first because we booked 2 separate times for the museum and the first one was coming up.
About a 1km walk. The line was around the corner but did move quickly and we joined an even quicker line because we already had tickets.
All based on honesty though because no one ever checked out tickets.
Went straight the the Egypt section because have come specifically to see the Rosetta Stone and I love the mummies.
I saw some of the Egypt stuff like a couple of skeletons/mummified people like the Gebelein man, some sarcophagus stuff and some of the coffins/mummies.
Will was looking for the stone the whole time and couldn’t find it.

Of course the circumstances are that the Rosetta stone Is free to see at all times….
BUT currently there is a hieroglyphics exhibition so is been moved to that and the exhibition isn’t free is it 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
But we came specifically to see so we headed to the ticket office.
Only availability is in 3 hours time 😬😬😬
So we are going to do washing and try again tomorrow 😪
Walked past an exchange place on the way back and I’m fucking FURIOUS.
We gave 25€ we had left over to get us some ££ to do the laundry.
    25€ is $40.

    We got 11£ back 🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃

    Which is $19.
    Absolutely go get fucked.

Exchange rate was shocking but they also conveniently forgot to mention the service fee AND handling fee.
Big “no refunds” signs all over the window so the transaction was done.
    LIVID.

I don’t mind spending money but I loatheeeee wasting it and feeling like I’ve been tricked out of it. I need that $20 dammit. 😩

    I smell a review 😆

Walked past a few pubs until we found one with a good menu.
    Lovely little area.
We both got pies with carrots, mash with gravy and it was delicious!!
Walked home. I bought tickets for the museum tomorrow in the late afternoon and applied for a dog - his name is cookie. Stupid name. He is 7kg so maybe too big but worth a shot.

Have walked to the laundry place and it is a bit of a drama 😆
How to say politely that we are in an area where people can’t afford washing machines and that’s why they are here.
A lady works here and she is very flamboyant and funny but everyone else is a question mark.
Worker lady was talking about how her son and daughter in law are struggling with their baby and one dude who was stick figure thin and very clearly a big druggy and dumb asked her “Do you think I should live with them” and she spun her way out of that one but he was dead set serious as if we would be helpful and it was really funny to listen to.
No weird stranger I don’t want to live with my family ??? 😆
Will had to go for a walk for coins as the coins only take 1£ coins
And BECAUSE THE 11£ WE EXCHANGED WASN’T ENOUGH 🫠🫠🫠🫠
How is $40 not enough for one load of washing 😪
In fairness it would have been had we not been robbed.
Anyway. He had to get out another 20 and convert all into 1’s which the local shopkeeper was well pleased about.
Have done washing, we are now drying.
    The place is very busy.

Walked home in the rain. Heaviest rain we have had since being here so have actually been really lucky overall. Forecast had predicted rain so we brought our rain jackets with us and covered the washing with them.
Walked the 2km home and found an Indian we wanted to go to for dinner.
Walked there and the line was down the street. Line was down the street for every Resturant. It was like time square in NY. Where did all the people come from????? Couldn’t get in anywhere so we went to the Christmas market and got a sausage an chips.
    Then churros.
Hurried back home as the crowds were really too much.
    Will watching videos.

I am going to start my new book. I have wasted 2 hours of my life trying to find a recap of the last 3 books in the series cause I read the third book over 2 years ago (really need to pick book series that are already finished. This waiting around for years is bothersome, albeit exciting when the date finally arrives)
And I FINALLY FOUND ONE 😭
I found 1000 opinions but only one wonderful person did a factual recount. Bless them.

Have got an email about uploading documents for our flight home which we have decided not to do as there is a footnote saying you can do it at the airport.
A risky moves because of the strike but as we are business our line is shorter. And we are going home rather than to somewhere and I can only upload a print screen anyway as not at a computer and don’t have the documents soooo

We plan to get there heaps early anyway.
    So soon!!! 🕺🏻🕺🏻🕺🏻

  • Day 74

    London

    December 26, 2022 in England ⋅ ⛅ 6 °C

Woke up and about 15 minutes later the fire alarm went off, glad I was already awake or my heart would have given out, fire alarms send me over the edge for some reason which I suppose they are suppose to do. The noise sends adrenaline pumping around my body and I get the shakes which is so stupid and completely involuntary 😆😆😆
And annoying. Calm down it’s just noise 😆😆😆
It’s stopped but kept coming back on again so wasn’t sure if real or not. (Thats the big problem with the required practice evacuations, no one takes them seriously when real. 😆)
    So i went downstairs.
Went down with 4 others - we are the top floor of course it so took a while to reach the bottom - we set off about 3 stair alarms along the way.

Walked round the side of the building and asked reception - just confirming not real alarms and she looked at me like I was stupid.
“It’s Monday, we test the alarms on Monday”
And how and why would I know that ??

Had to wait 10 mins in the foyer before the elevators were re activated to go back up. Was not walking the 47 flights back up.

Read some of my book then headed to ‘Flat Iron’ to meet Bronte.

We were early and put our name on the wait list (25 mins) then waited.
She is an on time person. Hurray!
We went to find Will some water then headed back and sat at the bar before our table was ready.
Really good food. Not enough but really good!
It’s a steak and sides, that’s it. But they have mastered it.
We got heaps of sides and it added up very quickly but worth it.
We then went to a bar in covent garden and had some beers. They argued a lot over whose beer is better.
Bronte is an excellent conversationalist. Very easy to pick straight back up from where we left off.
Will and Bronte complete opposite political spectrums and we nearly went into dangerous waters but I think they both did really well haha
We talked for hours so missed any chance of seeing a matinee show like we had considered.
    Gave her big hugs bye.
She is going to stay in London, is currently deciding whether to take a new job or not - more money but she doesn’t think recession proof and broke up with Chris so is having fun on the dating scene. Bea is well.

Hung out at the hotel then went out for Ramen for dinner.
Will liked his mine was garbage, but I’m proud I tried it haha. I was hoping my broth would be like mi goreng but it was bland meat water.
Back home. Hope to finish my book tonight.

    Finished my book. 🕺🏻

  • Day 73

    London

    December 25, 2022 in England ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

    What a crap Christmas.
Will made a joke about getting the noose out and I think that sums it up really.
Facebook flooded with everyone with family and we are stuck in our hotel room because everything is shut. Even McDonalds is shut.
Oh and the Resturant cancelled our dinner reservations overnight so nowhere to go for dinner. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

We did find a Burger King with about 1000 people in it for lunch. The only thing in London open. They would have made a FORTUNE.
Then luckily our hotel had a Resturant that was open for dinner and had openings so at least we ate today.
And in fairness it was actually lovely. Loveeeee carrots.

Great we are together and not alone alone but have spent literally every second of the last 2 months together so nothing to talk about and still a very very lonely day.

We did get a stocking on our door with biscuits and 3 oranges lol. Don’t care we don’t like the biscuits, the surprise was nice.

I’ve read some of my book.
    And that’s summarizes our Christmas.

Not to be dramatic but worst Christmas I’ve ever had. Lol
Can definitely always be worse and I have reminded myself of that all day. No one is dead or dying, we are just lonely.
Also today is about Jesus, not me, so have read some bible verses too.

Have planned with Bronte for tomorrow so at last something to do.
We are very bored. Wish we could come home now.

    Nearly there.

Oh. We patted a pug while eating our hungry jacks and both really like them so their breed had been added to our potential second dog list.

  • Day 72

    London

    December 24, 2022 in England ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

Both bins are full, ours towels need replacing (used a few on the floor because on day 1 when I turned on the shower it came out the holdable nozzle and not the ceiling shower but the nozzle was facing sidewards and it seems our shower is not sealed properly so escaped snd flooded the floor lol.) and we are out of toilet paper so we required room service which means we had to clean our room before we left. Took a minute 😅😅
We then changed our sign to please clean so hopefully they see it.

We headed towards the tube. In theory it is running today but may have delays. All overground is not running.
Caught it to tower hill again and got some subway for lunch. Nothing is universal, what’s available is always different.
Except their macadamia nut cookies ie the best cookies in the world.
Walked to the Jack the Ripper museum.
Overall quick and fun but odd.
Will had to go in first in case they had live actors. They did not thank goodness.
There are 5 rooms all up.
    - crime scene
    - what the murderers house might look like
    - detectives room
    - victims bedroom
    - morgue

All rooms had info on the wall.

Room one was pretty basic decoration wise as it meant to be a dark alley.
“The scene is set in Mitre Square, where the 6th
victim, Catherine Eddowes was killed. Her horribly
mutilated body was discovered by a policeman, P.C. Edward Watkins, on his regular night patrol.”

I though room 2 was a bit silly. It was the one with the most detail and decoration but in reality they how absolutely no idea who Jack the Ripper is so all speculation. They dressed the room as if he were a surgeon and had books open on scientific working of the body and like medical tools around the place.

Room 3 had letters Jack sent and then typed up version making it easy to read them.
A lot of taunts and a detectives board with string trying to piece it all together.

    It also had some artifacts.
“These 4 items all belonged to Police Constable (P.C.) Edward Watkins of the City of London Police. He was carrying them in the early hours of 30 September, 1888, when he discovered the mutilated body of Catherine Eddowes in Mitre
Square, Aldgate. Because of their historic interest, P.C. Watkins kept the items, which passed
down through the generations after his death. They have been in private ownership for over a century and this is the first time they have been put on public display.”

Room 4 had info on most victims. All/most struggling with life and working as prostitutes to get by after family breakdowns.
A song was playing through a speaker - a song Mary Jane Kelly sang the night she was murdered.

Then back down to the bottom level of the building or room 5.
Morgue pictures of all 8 dead woman. Some aren’t too horrendous to look at but 2 are very bad. One horrendous which I remember seeing when doing to the tour with Mum and dad.
Very confronting. This was of Mary Jane Kelly, the youngest and last victim.

On all the stairways they had extracts of newspapers of the time talking about the murders.

His crimes did have a small positive effects on the slums as they were examined by society so closely and deemed unacceptable.
“The playwright George Bernard Shaw commented that Jack the Ripper had done more to throw spotlight on the terrible conditions in the East End than any reformer.”

It was the only thing open today to do - it was different and we enjoyed it.

We then walked across tower bridge and walked along the river until we got to the Globe because Will hadn’t seen it. Told him my fun fact of its the only building in London allowed to have a thatched roof which I have re confirmed is actually true this evening haha. Have to fact check hahah.
Also walked past the HMS Belfast, London Bridge a the bridge in Harry Potter 7.
Walked through markets and found a Starbucks which had a white hot chocolate 🤤🤤
We googled a place for us to go buy Will some socks cause his have died.
Ended up deciding to go to a shopping center because I would like to get a cord for my kindle as we will probably be stuck inside most of tomorrow.
    Weird it’s Christmas tomorrow.
There was a Westfields 10km away but on a metro line so we headed to that and hoped trains kept running until we were finished or would have to get a cab.
Walked to the station next to St Paul’s and walked straight onto a tram. Awesome.
Weird ass layout. And huge. Not that busy considering it’s Christmas Eve. Was successful in both our searches.
Trams were still running so caught 2 to get home.
They aren’t that crammed either. I think everyone has made alternate plans rather than risk it.
    We are home now.
    They cleaned our room 🕺🏻

Went to the Christmas markets for dinner but they were shut.. so popped into shake shack as only fast food available.
Ate it back in our room.
How the Grinch stole Christmas starting soon so that’s our Christmas Eve plans.

  • Day 71

    London

    December 23, 2022 in England ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

Got up and headed to Buckingham Palace to watch the changing of the guard which I’ve never seen.
It was pretty crowded considering it was raining quite heavily. We couldn’t get anywhere near the gates but lined on the road.
Started at 11 and we had left by 11:06 😆
We watched them march in from the side and one group went in and the other went marching away from the palace up the street. We watched them march and then saw nothing. Didn’t know if it was over or not so we left. Google has since told me it goes for 45 mins so still have not seen the changing of the guard hahah
We then headed to Westminster station and caught the tube to tower hill, got off and went to lunch at wagamama. We got Katsu curry which was good but nothing will beat CoCo curry in Japan.
We then bought our tickets to the Tower of London. (No donation tickets, have saved us $24 all up now 😆)
3rd time doing this for me. For whatever reason my brain does not retain this attraction. I’ve had a think and I think it’s because nothing significant happened here. Obviously lots of important things did but not some big shocking thing that makes me take note. It’s just really consistent through history and not that many people died here. Only 22 ever and 12 of them were during the world wars so not medieval. They were shot by the wall but most excexutions took place on tower hill.
Anne Boleyn was executed on tower green.
We went right, climbed up and in and began.
Lots of different rooms and sections built and used by different kings. King Edward I was featured a lot in this section. It had his bedroom and the chapel where he was murdered.
It had thick ceiling beams that King Henry VIII had restored.
We walked over the connection bit which gave great view of tower bridge then entered a bit that use to hold people and had inscriptions on the wall where prisoners had written.

Then a section on the The Yeoman Warders who are guards.

“In 1826, Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington,
became the Constable of the Tower of London.
He thought that the Yeoman Warders were giving
the Tower a bad name and began to reform their
behaviour. Wellington declared that Yeoman Warders would only be recruited from ex-servicemen with long service and good records of conduct. He also reduced their number from around 100 to just 33. Wellington's reforms are still in force today. Today's Yeoman Warders have at least 22 years of military service. Each has reached the rank of warrant officer and been awarded the long service and good conduct medal. Yeoman Warders are now recruited from all three branches of the armed forces: The Royal Navy including The Royal Marines, The British Army, and The Royal Air Force.

    “The Yeoman Wardens are the
guardians of many ancient ceremonies. The Ceremony of the Keys has taken place every night
for more than 700 years to lock up the Tower. It begins when the sentry cries out, "Halt, who comes there?" The Yeoman Warder replies, "The Keys." They are questioned: "Whose keys?" and
answer "Queen Elizabeth's Keys." The sentry answers: "Pass then, all's well."

They haven’t updated all the signage to King Charles.

We then went to a section on some Royal Beasts that were kept.

    - King Henry IIl's polar bear was tied to a long rope so it could go fishing in the Thames.
    - Snakes were wrapped in blankets and kept on a stove to keep them warm.
    - King James I designed a nipple so sick lion cubs at the Tower could be bottle-fed.
    - Uncaged monkeys lived in a room where visitors could walk among them. It was shut down after
    a monkey attacked a boy.
    - A Tower ostrich died, after swallowing a large nail. Visitors had fed it the pieces of metal,
    believing ostriches ate iron.
    - The artist Edwin Landseer, who later
designed the lion sculptures inTrafalgar Square, drew live lions at the Tower.
    - The last Royal Beasts left the Tower in 1832 for the new London Zoo.

We then went to see the Crown Jewels.
    Finally 😂😂😂
Didn’t bothered to brace the line the last 2 times cause they were a kilometer long but walked straight in today. 🕺🏻
One crown is missing along the conveyer belt past all the crowns in preparation for King Charles coronation.
There was also some ceremonial swords and a cloak thing that I got yelled at for taking pictures of cause I genuinely didn’t see the signs saying you couldn’t.
Then was the converter belt which I thought moved at a great speed. It was very slow but still moved. You could still see them without feeling rushed but it made sure people didn’t stop the traffic. (All crowns and the scepter)

Lots of big gold stuff used for banquets and stuff. I actually think the gold stuff looks really tacky.
Like I know it’s real gold but every other time I’m seen gold in my life it’s been an imitation of wealth which is cringy.
The fact it’s real doesn’t seem to change my opinion on it.

Walked around the corner and saw the Imperial State Crown which I enjoyed because I recognized it.

We then went and saw the ravens. One had escaped and was talking to its friends in the cages almost trying to get back in. 😅
    They were very big.
They are fed lots of different things but once a week they are fed a whole rabbit lol.

We then went to the torture section which wasn’t that extensive, just 3 types.
A lot of people making the same joke that they would love a few minutes on the rack for a good back crack.
The other 2 was being folded in thirds and held in a ball called the scavengers daughter and manacles.
Then onto the armory. Will on the same page as me. The French was better and can’t be beaten. I don’t want to see replicas.
It had a king Henry VIII Armor but most were just examples or not old at all.
Then into a beautiful stone chapel and into another room of bits and bobs. Best bit was the executioners block and axe.
    One cannons, gun, swords etc.
    Finished.

We then caught the tube to Kings Cross.
    Found the platform 9 3/4
    ITS SO STUPID.
There is a professional photographer there and he literally took 5 minutes per person so the line didn’t move and was 50 people long. So I took a picture of the place but didn’t get the famous picture of running through the wall which is disappointing but wasn’t going to make Will wait lol.
I got Megs a Slytherin Christmas ornament in the shop.
    We then went home.
Washed my hair and went out to China Town for dinner to a buffet.
Not great food but passable and a buffet so that’s an automatic extra 30 points.

At home now just watching the Telly.

  • Day 70

    London

    December 22, 2022 in England ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

I was surprised when Will said he had a good sleep, he was tossing and turning all night.
It’s a double bed so a tight fit but i slept well too.
Headed towards the Churchill War rooms because Will hadn’t done them.
It’s very busy out and about.
We walked through the Horse Guards Palace.
Been before but was easier to envision the Queens funeral parade coming though the middle.
Hadn’t seen the Royal guards in their winter stuff before.
I wanted to eat before we went it because we have done this before - entered a museum on an empty stomach and struggled because we become hungry sick because we are in there hours.
But literally nothing around - would have to walk back to Trafalgar Square which isnt actually that far but it’s about the pointless miles and I’m not wearing my walking shoes today 😅 ( In my jeans today and can’t get away with that fashion choice. Wearing tights is bad enough haha)
    So we risked it.
The pound is the worstttttttt 😩😩
    It’s double.
29.5 to enter or 26.5 without a donation.
We didn’t give the donation so saved $12 hahahah
    Still over $100 to go.
The highlights for me were enigma, the flag that covered Churchills coffin and footage from that, a letter from the king to Churchill and just seeing the map room, his bedroom and the cabinet war rooms.
A worker saw me take a picture of the letter from the king to Churchill and got so excited he came over and gave me a history lesson - even pulled up a picture on his phone of the the letter in print incase I couldn’t read the running writing. Wild to think some people actually love their jobs that much.
It was a lot of info and no seats. Why never any seats?
I also felt very pressured to move quickly because of the layout. I was blocking people from info and the audio guides everyone gets for free are good but also so long that it keeps people standing in sections for way too long and it creates major traffic jams.
I remember going with Mum and dad and a line existing. I don’t think we walked straight in.
Today we did and I still felt too many people were inside. Peak season must be mental.

I like all of Churchills quotes. They were everywhere and all very good.

We then went to a pub for lunch.
I saw a roast with gravy and was so keen to order but it’s only available on Sunday’s.
    Gutted haha.
    Will got bangers and mash.

Came home and tried to write an itinerary for the remainder of our time here.
Everything we want to do requires a train that is not working such as going to Bletchley park to see the code breaking rooms, Cambridge to see Newtons tree, Hampton court where King Henry VIII lived and even though I’ve been twice, Harry Potter world (🤣)
    But no.
    Also everything closed.
    Like everything.
Which is expected but still super annoying.
SO SAD WE CANT GET TO MANCHESTER TO HAVE CHRISTMAS WITH HELEN AND TOM. 😭😭
Might be seeing a play with Bronte though so that hopefully works out.
    We then went to TGIFridays.
Got my Jack Daniel glaze. 10/10
Service was crap and they tip in restaurants here
    LAMMEEEEEEE
BUT we noticed we weren’t charged for 2 cokes on the bill so instead of telling them that’s the amount we tipped.
    Everybody wins hahahahahha.
We then walked through the Christmas markets outside and I bought an obnoxiously expensive Christmas tree ornament.
I ummmmed and ahhhhed about which one to get cause I liked so many of them but ended up getting Harry Potter because it’s actually relevant to the location. It’s hand stitched and I actually really like it.
We then went home and I have watched ‘the Holiday’ on the TV which is one of my top 5 movies of all time so loved that and have tried to find my kindle charging cord but it’s gone walkies.

    It’s nearly 1am bed time.
