      Meandering in Malaysia

      April 1 in Malaysia ⋅ ☁️ 33 °C

Spent the last couple of days exploring Kuala Lumpur whilst Jodie finishes off her yoga teaching in Koh Ta Kiev.

I needed some stable internet (and air con!) to sit my microsoft exams + flights in and out of KL are super cheap so figured it was the best option.

The city is very modern and well connected with transport, doesn't feel like the rest of southeat asia with the exception of Singapore. Temperature is about ~35 here during the day and humid, although feels a lot cooler than cambodia (maybe I am just used to the heat now?). During the day there are occasional thunderstorms with rain which can be a nice break from the sun. There is also good air con in pretty much all buildings which is nice.

Transport and food here are very cheap, even arguably cheaper than Cambodia in some places which is strange considering the difference in living standards. Most intercity trams/metro/monorail journeys are less than 30p and you can quite easily get a full big lunch or dinner for £5 or less.

Spent 2 days solo travelling around the city + visiting some nearby sites and getting some revision done as well. I have had a pretty bad cold the past couple of days (since arriving) so haven't been feeling the best but have tried to power through.

Jodie joins me after finishing her yoga, likely in Indonesia but yet to be decided.

      Ruhiger Tag

      April 8 in Malaysia ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

Read more

      KL Tower und Little India

      April 12 in Malaysia ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Also ab auf nebenan gelegenen KL Tower 😉🤘🏼

Was dort spannend war?

    • Day 65–70

      Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

      April 10 in Malaysia ⋅ ☁️ 31 °C

5 days in Malaysia! I was recovering from a viral infection and trying to eat a lot of food to get my strength back. The food was very tasty there so it wasn't too hard... but we did spend a bit over our food budget oops. It was nice to reunite with Chris again after he left Cambodia to study for his exams and do some solo travel.

The weather was so humid so it was really uncomfortable being outside but we found lots of nice places with air con to spend our time. I had a taxi driver who was surprised and thought it was really cool that I came from Scotland. We were definitely the only tourists in most of the places we went except our hostels. A cafe owner gave us each a postcard with his art on it and I made a hand written note for my family that I was going to send home but we lost them😢. Maybe I will pick one up the next time I see some post cards.

It was nice to be in a country which is a bit more developed for a change while I was recovering but after a while I was itching to get back to a crazy place with less rules and more wild natural beauty! We couldn't wait to explore more of Indonesia together next. Stay tuned for the next penguin post.

We tried to go North to do a nature walk in a big national park but the bus station was too busy due to the end of Ramadan and we couldn't get our bus. It was a shame, but instead Chris got a buzz cut and I got some tattoos so it was definitely a memorable time despite it being so short!

    • Day 55

      Kuala Lumpur

      December 1, 2019 in Malaysia ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

KLCC Symphony Lake - and more rain

      October 18, 2019 in Malaysia ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

Decided to use the day to go sightseeing. The rain last night had left the gold paint washing off onto the black. Forecasting more rain, may as well be tourists.

We’ve looked around the Petronas Towers before as they were built on the site of the old race course and Bun’s old house. However, we’d never been around the Symphony Lake

“Within KLCC Park, sited at the esplanade outside of Suria KLCC, lies the 10,000 sq ft man-made Lake Symphony. Two musical fountains display over 150 unique programmed animations in a magical performance of sound and water. KLCC Lake Symphony Light and Sound Water Fountain showtimes are 8pm, 9pm and 9.45pm daily.

The park is lovely because of the native trees and the birds. Mr and Mrs Sun Bird were whizzing about the trees. The lake was unimpressive, but then it wasn’t showtime. We nipped into the complex below the towers to find a coffee and to decide where to go next. A walk to a mall where we used to go with the kids, via the aquarium seemed a good idea, only to come out into daylight to find another storm pouring down. Plan B, a taxi to the mall.

The mall was going through a revamp. Somehow it just wasn’t very interesting. There are hundreds of shops and this year’s main merchandise was optical glasses. Previous years it’s been cameras, games machines, computers etc. While all of that is still available, glasses shops predominated.

Decided to ride the new monorail 🚝 to have a different view of the city. It’s certainly different being above the streets with nothing either side of you. I wondered how they changed the trains over from the up line to the down line and was fascinated by the track swapping over.

Rained most of the afternoon. Streets in KL were flooded. Is there a theme to our holidays. Will areas of desert in Australia experience the first rainfall this century when we visit? Never mind, should get a few hours painting done tomorrow morning.

Dinner was unusual. Rather than a food hall we went to a stall for a takeaway. Nothing was priced, nothing was weighed and people put what they wanted into varying sizes and shapes of containers. At the end a young woman looked at what you had and told you how much to pay. No one argued.

      Leap Day

      February 29, 2020 in Malaysia ⋅ ⛅ 33 °C

Our final day in Malaysia, and it's a leap day... so we have arranged a geocaching event at the Petronas Towers, to meet local and visiting cachers. Having previously been warned that any event in Malaysia where you're not alone is a good event, we were very pleased to have 9 attendees.

One of the local cachers then escorted a group of us to complete a nearby NFC cache (Near Field Communication), and as we don't have any of this type of cache in Adelaide, it was interesting to see it in action.

After morning tea at the towers, we found a few more caches with the locals, and had lunch at the Hard Rock Cafe before catching the monorail back to our hotel to collect our bags, then the train to the airport.

We had plenty of time to spare, so bought a lounge package where we could have a shower and a meal before our flight home.

      Kuala Lumpur - Petronas Towers

      February 29, 2020 in Malaysia ⋅ ⛅ 33 °C

      Zwischenstopp in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

      June 26, 2022 in Malaysia ⋅ ☁️ 31 °C

      Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

      August 30, 2022 in Malaysia ⋅ 🌧 30 °C
