      Jan 5: Sea day. Making friends.

      We had a lovely dinner with Jane & Andy at Manfredi's Italian Cuisine. The meals on this ship have been spectacular. Manfredi's is a specialty restaurant and very intimate. Our wait staff take the time to explain all dishes and wine pairings. It's also nice getting to know them and the countries they come from. Each staff member is given a 6-month contract and are eligible to renew the contract or cancel it and go on elsewhere. Our waiter, Kutut, is from Bali and is excited to visit his hometown when we head there on this trip. He just announced that he has extended his contract for another 6 months. He's very proud to be serving on the Viking ships. His energy and excitement are infectious. Staff are proud to speak of their homelands, families, and the ability to provide financial support back home. Staff share rooms (2 to a room) and, unlike many cruise ships, their rooms boarder the outside so that each has a window. These people work extremely hard, and we are very grateful to have their care. Today's Blind Wine pick: San Leonino Chianti Riserva (Sanguovese) Tuscany.

      In Aguascalientes nochmal eben eine Paella für 15 Leute gekocht und am nächsten Morgen nach Mexico City Freunde besuchen.

      Mam liebt oder hasst diese 23 Millionen Stadt - ich bin Team Love. Die Menschen in ganz Mexiko sind wohl mit die Herzlichsten der Welt, überall fühlt man sich direkt wohl und Teil einer Gemeinschaft, aber CDMX hat diesen Vibe aus Stadt, Kultur und Menschen gemixt mit Dreck, Lärm und weiten Wegen. Wer mich kennt, weiß dass ich ein Stadtkind bin, ob es CDMX für immer sein müsste...wer weiß! ;)Read more

      D Vorfröid isch riiisig uf vier Wuche Mexiko und Belize.
      Itz startet üsi Reis mitem Flug nach Frankfurt und nähr gad aschliessend nach Mexiko City. Z Flüge isch üs chli z'widder aber ghört haut drzue.
      Mexiko mir chöme. 😅😁

      Auso bis Mexiko City hets glängt. Leider isch dr planet Flug nach Cancun nid müglech gsy. Mir hei öppe 1h45 bir Iireis verlore. Nähr heisi z Gepäck nüm agnoh und mir hättes müesse dür di normali Sicherheitskontrolle näh. Mit auem womer hei drbi gha unmöglich.

      Dritter Stop Cabo San Lucas

      Nach Cabo San Lucas waren es noch einmal knapp 2 Stunden mit dem Flieger. Aber auch das haben wir geschafft. Und das Gepäck war erfreulicherweise auch alles da😉Ich habe mich noch einen bisschen aufregen können über den Verlust meines Brillenetuis (Inhalt normale Brille und Sonnenbrille) aber wenn man halt zu doof ist dann ist es so. Mein neuer Buddy hat noch eine ohne Stärke die geht dann. Vom Flughafen sind wir dann mit dem Taxi 40 Minuten zum Hotel direkt am Hafen. Und Morgen geht es dann endlich auf das Schiff und dann geht das tatsächliche Abendteuer los. Ob ich da WLAN habe mal schauen. Ich werde versuchen so viel wie möglich zu berichten.       Here is my first attempt at more serious bird photography - I took over 300 pictures, and narrowed it down to 60 - (FindPenquins allows 20 pics per posting) - So there are 3 posts of bird pictures (Please let me know which ones you really like).

      Geoff Carpentier, the onboard Bird Watcher Lecturer, from Canada spent time with me naming these birds. — Granted for real bird watchers, going to the Cozumel National Aviary is pretty much like fishing in a barrel.

      Ciudad de Mexico

      Endlich angekommen. 13 Stunden Flug und ganze 5 Filme später sind wir in der Millionenstadt gelandet. Bereits von oben konnte man die bunten Häuser sehen und die Größe der Stadt erahnen.
      Mit unserem Taxi Fahrer Enrique haben wir direkt die erste Stadtführung hinter uns gebracht und auch der erste Spanisch-Härtetest ist bestanden, Note: aureichend, zumindest mit Händen und Füßen. Fazit, da geht noch was :-D

      Am Hotel angekommen zeigt sich, dass wir eine Privatwohnung gebucht haben und uns der Besitzer Octavio schon sehnsüchtig erwartet. Die erste Anlaufstation ist ein kleines Restaurante namens Los Dorados de Durango und noch ehe das erste Foto von der köstlichen Suppe "Caldo Tlalpeño" gemacht werden konnte, haben wir diese schon weg geatmet. Auch unsere erste "Torta" war köstlich. Beides lokale Mexiko Stadt Speisen und dazu ein frischer Limetten Saft.

      Jetzt aber gute Nacht, denn reisen macht müde und Imke fühlt sich immer noch schwankend und betrunken. Aber das liegt nicht am Vodka, wie man denken könnte, denn in der Flasche, die wie von Octavio erhalten haben, ist nur umgefülltes Wasser enthalten. Viel mehr ist es die Höhe hier, an der es liegen kann, denn Mexico Stadt befindet sich auf unglaublichen 2.200m Höhe. Wer hätte das gedacht?

      In Octavios Wohnung angekommen, fühlen wir uns direkt wohl. Obwohl wir sehr satt sind wird jetzt aber von noch mehr Essen geträumt, denn es war so so lecker 😂😍      Read more

      Adios Mexiko

      Der letzte Tag neigt sich dem Ende und ich sitze schon am Flughafen und schreibe die letzten Zeilen. Es war eine unfassbare Erfahrung. Wir haben so viel erlebt und richtig realisieren werde ich das vermutlich erst die nächsten Tage und Wochen. Ich merke das meine Kraft zu Ende ist. Der Reise Akku ist leer. 🤪Mich strengt das Reisen bzw. Nach Los Aussagen unser Urlaub doch auch sehr an. Ich benötige da immer meine Zeit, alles zu verarbeiten. Für mich war es perfekt und ein richtiges Erlebnis!! Danke für die tolle Zeit, danke auch an Lo, ohne die ich das nie gemacht hätte & und danke an Mexiko. Es was mir eine Ehre. 😊Read more

      Day 11

      Day 11: Getting a workout in

      January 2 in Mexico ⋅ ⛅ 72 °F

      I have been trying to get in workouts regularly while on this cruise cause, you know, cruise food. I normally workout, at home, Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I have a 3 day workout plan that I follow. At home, I get up when I get up, cause you know, RETIRED. I have breakfast of oatmeal, then about an hour later head to the gym. Shout out to my PF friends.

      On the ship it’s different. I am not an early riser. And I have to plan around port days and if we are heading out on an excursion. But I am still trying to get in 3 days of weight training. I’m also taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Our stateroom is on deck 8. Most of the restaurant options are on the 2nd deck. The fitness/spa is on the first deck.

      I have had to make adjustments to my workout routine. They do not have barbells, only dumbbells and only 6-8 weight machines. So I have to substitute exercises. I do a goblet squat with a dumbbell instead of a barbell squat. I’ve also had to convert pounds into kilograms and lower the weight ( you can lift more with a barbell than dumbbells because the weight is better distributed. But any workout is a win.

      So if you see me wheezing on the stairs landing, it’s all good. I’m good. I’m fine.

      Day 13: Below deck: Part One

      January 4 in Mexico ⋅ ☀️ 59 °F

      As you can imagine there is a whole other world beneath the decks which we traverse. The gallery’s, the laundry, the storage, the whole infrastructure to keep us all enjoying our cruise is beyond description.

      As we passed down the corridors we saw all the Christmas holiday decorations on pallets to off-load when we arrive to LA. The stairwells below deck are not the elegance we climb.

      Like the Wizard of Oz - the 470 staff members work behind the curtain - very hard to make each day a memory we will not forget.

      We did get to see the control room, no photos allowed. The tour we went on gave us a small taste of the underpinnings of this operation of service at sea.
