Day 77: We took a good look at CookOctober 5, 2016 in New Zealand
A good look at Cook we took but it did us no good when all we saw was clouds. We already chose for the longer hike (the night before) with a more challenging track and now we added better views also on Cook itself. From lake Pukaki (where we woke up) it was clear to us that it wasn't clear around Cook but our track was almost sunny 😆.
With a nice start but a steep track we took our time but were still at the original end of the track in 65 minutes while it was supposed to take 210 minutes up and down. No way we were heading back already, we went to Muller Hut that was on the top of this mountain side. We came really far, walked with 5 Czech people but they were equiped with snow boots and proper axes and sticks so we had to stop when only snowy paths appeared. We noticed we could see Mt Cook almost fully from here, only the top was always in some clouds.
We walked back when we reached our maximum of 1517 meters high. We gained 1k in 2 hours and that was apparently with 2200 steps. That it was steep we felt in our legs and going down did go only a little faster since it was to steep to run 😉
We arrived at the bottom just in time to leave our mountain, Mt Cook and the whole area in a thick snowy and rainy cloud. So no time to waste here and down to Twizel, a small place they mentioned to be worth a visit but we drove through it in 60 seconds 😂. We weren't really drawn to it (maybe it was our rush down that we got since we saw the rain coming). We went further down to take a well deserved beer in the sun on a nice picnic area next to a small river. From here we went past Lake Wanaka to Bendigo our next overnight stop 😊 it was not far pas the lake because we would go back there tomorrow. We had a perfect spot near a lake and a nice sunset, time to finish the day 😆.Read more
