      Morning trip to Kraków

      So in the morning... After missing the boat and losing Brace's wallet... The wallet reappears, on the worktop. There are no photos from that day as we were hungover and lazy, but friends again we decided to go on one last venture into the old town so as to have spent some more time out of the van before leaving for Slovakia.

      We came accross a big market and the lovely old lady who had a bakery gave Lennon a little present.

      Krakau.. Niet veel te vertellen dan het was een lange werkdag. Vooral veel geregel voor de merch, vandaag ook weer iemand die voor ons verkoopt. Maar dit ging niet zoals gepland dus heb even mn management skills in gezet en uiteindelijk tot alles goed geregeld.

      190ème étape ~ Cracovie

      Découverte de la deuxième ville la plus populaire de Pologne. Elle a un peu moins de charme que la capitale. Nous avons été voir la barbacane et la porte St-Florian. Ce chanceux a toute une rue à son nom. Ensuite nous avons été admirer la basilique Mariacka et sa place. Sans oublier le petit tour dans le marché couvert.
      Les lueurs de la Saint Valentin reflètent dans toute la ville.

      191ème étape ~ Auschwitz

      Nous avons visité les camps de concentration et d’extermination de Auschwitz I et Auschwitz II-Birkenau. Les horreurs qui se sont déroulées là bas de 1940 à 1945 sont d’une inhumanité sans nom. Ces lieux chargés d’histoire sont entièrement placés sous les signes de l’hommage et de la mémoire pour toutes les victimes.
      Nous avons eu la chance d’avoir une guide en français qui nous a montré les différents endroits et expliqué le fonctionnement de ces endroits.
      Le chemin de la mort qu’ont traversé toutes les victimes est absolument inimaginable. Les lieux, inoccupés, ont l’air paisible, on peut difficilement s’imaginer les conditions dans lesquelles ils vivaient.
      Nous sommes entrés dans un bloc où étaient logés environ 750 femmes, les lits superposés sur 3 étages, le premier directement à même le sol, trop chaud en été, trop froid en hiver.
      Les allemands ont tout fait pour se faciliter la vie, ils ont construit des rails pour que les trains arrivent directement dans les camps, menti aux prisonniers de A à Z notamment en leur demandant d’attacher leurs chaussures ensemble, en leur promettant une meilleure vie, en leur vendant des maisons, des magasins.
      C’était un moment intéressant, nous avons beaucoup appris même si la tristesse a accompagné notre découverte.

      Ein langer Tag

      Guten Morgen zusammen! Dieses Mal melde ich mich statt abends nach einem erlebnisreichen Tag schon am frühen Morgen nach einem langen Tag gestern und einer kurzen Nacht.
      Gestern haben wir Zakopane verlassen und wollten weg vom kalten Schneeregen, nächstes Ziel: Ostsee. Dafür ging es zuerst nochmal nach Krakau, wo wir sogar schon eine Stunde früher als geplant waren und zwar um halb drei nachmittags. Unser Zug nach Danzig ging aber erst um Mitternacht, also hatten wir noch Mal ziemlich viel Zeit in Krakau.
      Zuerst aber wollten wir die großen Rucksäcke einschließen. Einen Orangensaft, eine Sprite und viele gescheiterte Englisch-polnische Gespräche über den Wechsel von Scheinen in Kleingeld später, können wir uns doch nur mit leichtem Gepäck auf den Weg ins Zentrum machen. Also spazieren wir noch Mal durch den Park und die Altstadt und gehen in ein Café. Das Café Camelot ist eine sehr gute Entdeckung, wo sich viele, die aussehen wie Studierende, treffen und es wieder sehr lecker aussehende Kuchen gibt. Allerdings haben wir noch nicht viel Hunger, weil wir (ihr ahnt es vielleicht schon) natürlich nach unserer Ankunft direkt erst Mal wieder Krakauer Kringel gefuttert haben und nehmen im Café also nur einen Espresso und einen Rosentee (sehr fancy). Anschließend spazieren wir noch Mal ein bisschen an der Weichsel entlang und essen bei Vegab einen milden und einen sehr scharfen veganen Kebab und machen uns nach einem kleinen Straßen Konzert bestehend aus zwei Saxophonen, einem Sousaphon (hat Leo gerade erfunden...) und einem Schlagzeug, auf den Weg zurück zum Bahnhof. Dort sind wir beide schon ziemlich k.o. und müssen noch zwei Stunden warten bis wir in unseren Zug einsteigen können. Dieses Mal haben wir eine Reservierung im normalen Sitzabteil für zusammen 2 Zloty, also ca. 40 Cent (Sparfüchse am Werk...). Dementsprechend war unsere Nacht allerdings auch nicht besonders erholsam- wenig Platz, sehr harte Sitze, immer wieder nervige laute Durchsagen (von denen wir ja eh nichts verstehen) und dauerhaft angelassenes Licht. Nachdem wir morgens um 5:00 Uhr wegen Hunger und schönem Sonnenaufgang schon oder Mal wider wach waren, gab es unser erstes Pre-Breakfast in Form von Keksen und jetzt freuen wir uns auf ein gutes großes Frühstück mit gaaaaanz viel Kaffee in Danzig...       Krakow is one of the oldest cities in Poland and the capital until 1596. That would have also been during the time of the Kingdom of Poland and their allied Lithuania ruled the north of Europe (between 1025 and 1466 and later with very dynamic borders).

      Wawel Hill boasts a beautiful medieval scene. It hosts Wawel Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and Wawel Cathedral, the Coronation site of Polish monarchs.

      Pope John Paul II was the Archbishop of Krakov before getting elevated to Pope. Trust us, they don't let you forget it here either. His likeness can be seen all over the city. PJP became Pope in 76, and was the first non-Italian pope in 455 years.      Read more

      Tour Day 5 - Krakow

      Today we got up and had breakfast, then got ready for a morning walkong tour with the group. The guide was hilarious and very enthusiastic about the city of Krakow. I personally was waiting for someone to get hit by a car or a bike as it was incredible how unaware the group was. We saw the main town square, former city walls and walked up to the castle area. It was beautiful city once again along a river.
      Erin and I went to the cathedral within the castle which houses many tombs of important people within Polish history as well as being a beautiful place of worship. It was definitely a highlight of the day, including a climb to a bell which if you touch you'll allegedly be married within the next year. Stay tuned for that update.
      We emerged and it was raining so we quickly walked back towards the hotel to have lunch at a Pierogi cafe. Erin tried to stop me from over ordering bur I didnt listen so we had more than enough of the delicious dumplings, including dessert ones. We rolled out of there, grabbed my rain jacket and headed for a beer at a bar. We were scheduled to go for a walking tour but with the weather decided against it instead we caught a tram to a museum.
      The museum was a pharmacy which was a part of the ghetto quarter, where the Nazi's had originally forced Polish jews in the area to live. The museum was interesting, with the employees seeming uninterested and it being unclear at first who ran the pharmacy. There was a lot of information and reading, not the most interactive musuem but heaps of amazing stories of things that occurred in the area. Next we walked to the jewish ghetto wall and then made our way to the jewish quarter of shops. We stopped at a craft brew house and I had a delicious gelato sour beer.
      Next we walked back towards the river to see the dragon statue. We attempted to grab a drink by the river on a boat but it looked closed and when we approached the door all the employees were sitting and/or playing frisbee. We waited for rhe dragon statue to breathe fire as we'd been told it was every 5 minutes... However after about 10 minutes it hadn't stirred, so we missed that. We walked through the town markets and went to watch the trumpet player who plays every hour st the church. We also missed seeing him play as he didnt come to the window we were standing near...
      Then we went for dinner at a traditional Polish place. It was very unusually decorated but the food was delicious. We then grabbed some snacks and alcohol for very cheap and headed back to the hotel. Erin's wine looked like blackcurrant juice and allegedly tasted the same, so she went to grab another bottle. Unfortunately for her this bottle had a cork... We had an early night especially early for sad no wine girl.      Read more

      UNE DESCENTE AU CENTRE DE LA TERRE.
      Lors de la descente nos oreilles claquées, une descente de l'équivalent de 60 étages à pied dans un premier temps puis 3 kilomètres de descente pour arriver à -300.
      Remonté en surface par cage d'ascenseur de mineur.
      Une ville sous la terre : impressionnant !!
      Les mines de sel de Wieliczka, sont des mines de sel situées à Wieliczka, près de Cracovie, en Pologne, inscrites dès 1978 sur la liste du patrimoine mondial de l’Organisation des Nations unies pour l'éducation, la science et la culture (UNESCO)
      . Il s'agit probablement de la plus ancienne attraction touristique en Europe. La couche de sel exploitée à Wieliczka est du sel gemme déposé par l'évaporation de l'eau d'une mer du miocène moyen, il y a 13,5 millions d'années. La mine s'étend sur une surface de 5500 m de longueur et de 900 à 1400 m de largeur. Elle comprend 9 niveaux s'échelonnant entre – 60 m et – 330 m et totalisant environ 300 km de galeries. Le volume de sel extrait est évalué à 7 500 000 m3 dont 6 600 000 m3 proviennent des 2350 salles et 900 000 m3 des galeries. Les salles sont parfois gigantesques comme la salle Michalowice d'une hauteur de 35 m et qui fut creusée durant 20 ans. La mine compte 26 puits principaux, dont 6 restent accessibles, et plus de 180 puits secondaires reliant les niveaux intermédiaires entre eux.      Read more

      Poland: Auschwitz

      This is probably one of the most sobering places that anyone could ever wish to go to. I've read many nonfiction and fiction books on this place as I've always tried to understand how human beings could do such things to one another. I think- since leaving here- I've been left with more questions than answers. It's an absolutely mortifying place. One would expect it to be so, but it was even more so than I imagined. The only way in which it is 'interesting', is to see how carefully the sadistic Nazis planned this, the macabre systems put in place to murder people on an en masse basis and the lengths they went to to hide their crimes. Everything was planned for from the start for their Final Solution to the 'Jewish Problem'. For example, all the death camps were built in Poland and not Germany for fear of reprisal from the German civilian population if they ever found out. Poland was also selected as it had the largest Jewish community in Europe at the time (over 3mil Jewish people). They chose Oswiecim (the town in Poland germanised to 'Auschwitz') for its excellent train transport links to the whole of Europe. They cleared a 10km radius around the camps so no one would know what was going on ie the only people intended to leave the camp were the SS officers. The list goes on. As tragic as this place is, I do think it is almost a place that everyone should visit. Empathy, integrity and respect were completely lacking in this place and visiting this foul place reinforces the fact that EVERYONE is deserving of these attributes. Sorry, some of the images are sadly quite disturbing, but people need to understand the horror of this place so as not to forget one of the worst events of history.Read more

      Krakau, eine Stadt mit Geschichte

      Krakau, eine südpolnische Stadt unweit der Grenze zur Tschechischen Republik, ist für ihren gut erhaltenen mittelalterlichen Stadtkern und ihr jüdisches Viertel bekannt. Mittelpunkt der Altstadt, die vom Parkring Planty und Überresten der mittelalterlichen Stadtmauer eingeschlossen wird, ist der imposante Marktplatz Rynek Glówny. Hier stehen die Tuchhallen, ein Handelszentrum aus der Renaissance, und die Marienkirche, eine gotische Basilika aus dem 14. Jahrhundert.
      In Krakau gibt es so viel zu entdecken, heute haben wir uns den Staftkern angeschaut, die Wawel um die sich die Legende vom Drachen 🐉 ringt, die vielen kleinen Gassen und die Vielzahl an Kirchen.
      Zwischendurch waren wir noch sehr lecker und sehr günstig essen 😀
      Und diesmal stimmt auch der Campingplatz!
      Morgen wollen wir uns dann noch Schindlers Fabrik anschauen und das unterirdische Museum unter dem Marktplatz.
      Mehr werden wir nicht schaffen, also müssen wir nochmal wiederkommen 😉      Read more
