      Heute haben wir Singapur erkundet. Wir sind durch den Stadtteil "Little India" mit vielen Tempeln und indischen Läden geschlendert. Die hohen Temperaturen von 31 °C in Kombination mit der hohen Luftfeuchtigkeit waren etwas ungewohnt, aber dafür haben wir ein paar mehr Pausen eingelegt (natürlich auch, um den Jetlag etwas auszukurrieren 😉). Danach waren wir im 80-Hektar-großen botanischen Garten spazieren. Die Flora und Fauna war wirklich unbeschreibbar: Unter den insgesamt 10.000 Pflanzensorten, die der Garten beherbergt, haben wir Orchideen, Monsteras, Alokasien, Frangipani-Bäume, Palmenbäume und viele weitere, wunderschöne Pflanzen gesehen. Eigentlich sollten wir im Garten auch Affen und Otter antreffen, aber diese sind uns leider nicht über den Weg gelaufen. Stattdessen sind uns aber Eichhörnchen, Wasserschildkröten und große Echsen begegnet. Am Abend sind wir noch am Hafen (Marina Bay) gewesen, um die Skyline bei Sonnenuntergang und Dunkelheit zu betrachten. Eine der Haupttouristenattraktionen, der Singapore Flyer, war vom Hafen aus auch bestens zu sehen. Um 20.00 Uhr verfolgten wir noch das täglich stattfindende Lichterspiel, welches die Gebäude am Hafen in unterschiedlichen Farben anleuchtete und verschiedene künstlerische Formen und Bilder darauf projizierte.

      Today we explored Singapore by foot. We strolled through the "Little India" district with many temples and Indian shops. The high temperatures of 31 °C in combination with the high humidity was a bit exhausting so that we took a few more breaks (of course also to compensate for the jet lag 😉 ). Afterwards we went for a walk in the 80-hectare botanical garden. The flora and fauna were truly incredible: among the 10.000 sorts of plants of the garden, we saw orchids, monsteras, palm trees and many other beautiful plants. Actually there should have been also monkeys and otters in the garden but unfortunately we didn't see them today. Instead squirrels, water turtles and large lizards passed our way. In the evening we went to the harbour (Marina Bay) to see the skyline at sunset and darkness. At 8.00 pm we watched the daily light show which illuminates the buildings at the harbour in different colours (e.g. the Singapore Flyer) and projected various artistic shapes and images onto them.       Sydney to Singapore

      Stayed overnight at Pam’s and had a speedy uber at 4:45am for the flight with both Pams and Howard to Singapore.
      Enjoyed an afternoon swim at Hotel Fort Canning pool, then queued for a AUD45 Singapore Sling and shell peanuts at the newly renovated Raffles Hotel Long Bar.
      Dinner at Makansutra - carrot cake, chards, prawn vege gyozas and satays and watched the light show over Marina Bay Sands.      Leia mais

      Downtown Singapore

      Day 2 in Singapore got off to a chill start. I had great plans to attack the day at 8am but waking up at 3am and not falling back to sleep until 9am for an hour and a half didn't gel well to the plan. But hopefully that's the last of the jet lag!

      Once I did get up and about I went for a little stroll down to the marinas. I've noticed that there aren't as many people as I thought there would be in this small but dense city. There are loads of cycleways and paths that really make it seem like a great place to live. The metro is sooo handy to use to, literally tap on and off for a dollar.

      Strolled back down to the Marina Bay Sands and saw the fancy boat in the sky. It really does make you think of Crazy Rich Asians and the opulence that is up there that envelopes Singapore. The Spectra light show wasn't fantastic but I'm taking it as a prequel to the Bay Gardens.

      Went with a friend's recommendation to try Murtabaks in Sam Sam on Arab Street after a stroll along Boat Quay and Clarke Quay; it did not disappoint!

      I hadn't planned on doing 15,000 steps in my Birks but that's what happened. And the three days where I wore them around the house thinking I had broken them in was far, far from the truth.....      Leia mais

      Le Singapour by night

      Nous avons pu profiter de la beauté des nuits de Singapour et ses spectacles de lumières éblouissants qui donnent envie de faire la fête.
      La nuit, Singapour offre un spectacle lumineux à tous les coins de rues. Dans les jardins, la lumière sublime la nature. On se sert du fleuve pour faire des spectacles, les bateaux s'illuminent et les buildings scintillants se reflètent dans l'eau. Les rues s'illuminent de différents styles selon qu'on soit dans le quartier chinois, indien ou arabe. Un vrai spectacle !Leia mais

      Singapur am Tage...

      Unser Tagesausflug führt uns gleich weder ins Conventions-Center, wahrscheinlich der beste Startpunkt mitten im Zentrum. Wir sehen noch mehr Geschäfte und Installationen das Gebäude ist ein Moloch.Unser RL kennt sich aber aus .😉 Nach langen Gängen und Rolltreppen finden wir uns plötzlich ganz nah am Marina Bay Sands wieder. Oha, so nah wirkt es noch überwältigender. 👍 Wir finden uns im 3.Tower wieder und marschieren zum Fahrstuhl, welcher uns in die 56.Etage auf die Besucherplattform bringen soll. Erst mal anstellen...es gibt eine lange Warteschlange....( diese Schlangen sollen uns weiterhin noch begleiten 😜 )Aber es geht zügig und bei 1,2,3 sind wir oben !
      Was für ein Blick über die Stadt. Schade, das wir das Swimmingpooldeck nicht betreten dürfen, wir sehen es nur von der Seite von der Plattform aus. Trotzdem phantastisch, diese Architektur!
      Allzulange ist nicht Zeit und wir gehen auch freiwillig nach einer Weile, weil uns die Sonne dort oben ungebremst das Gehirn ausdörrt.🤣
      Von oben sehen wir schon sehr schön die Gardens bei the Bay mit ihren 2 großen Gewächshäusern und dem vielen Grün herum.
      Der kleinere Flower Dom ist mediteran begrünt und ist nicht speziell, außer den sehr großen Sukkulenten !!
      Deshalb schnell durch und zum Forest Claud ,dem viel größeren Haus. Warum , das sehen wir gleich.Urwald empfängt uns, Riesenbäume, Felsen, Wasserfälle, feuchte Wärme, urige Geräusche..
      Phantastisch, das Ganze, Phantasiewesen -und Tiere, tolle Pflanzen und dann doch tatsächlich Pandora ,die verlorene Welt.Ich fühle mich wie selber im Film.Klasse gestaltet. Es geht mit Fahrstuhl über mehrere Ebenen und immer wieder was Neues... Wir kommen ganz schön ins Schwimmen mit unserer Zeit und müssen am Ende vieles lassen, um pünktlich am Sammelpunkt zu sein.Puh, das war knapp.
      Wir haben nämlich nochmal ein Rendezvous mit einem Bum Boat,🛶 diesmal am Tage.Und diesmal brennt uns das Klärchen auf die Birne ,während wir auf das nächste Boot warten .Das war hart ! Am Tage ist die Fahrt durch die Bay auch schön, man kann alles noch mal bewundern, aber gestern Abend war es einfach spektakulär! 🥰      Leia mais

      Looking for Crocodiles in Singapore

      Heute war ich im Sungei Buloh Watt unterwegs. Dieses Naturschutzgebiet liegt im Norden Singapurs, an der Grenze zu Malaysia. Schon allein auf der Fahrt dorthin sehe ich Ecken von Singapur zu sehen, die die meisten Touristen wahrscheinlich nicht sehen. Endlose Gewerbegebiete, mehr Müll als ich in Singapur erwartet hatte, und natürlich Dschungel. Ich habe nicht mehr das Gefühl in der hochmodernen Metropole Singapur zu sein, sondern irgendwo in der Pampa. Das Watt selbst ist nicht besonders groß aber dafür ist jeder Zentimeter von Leben erfüllt: Unzählige Insekten (leider auch unzählige Mücken), Vögel, Affen und auch Krokodile leben dort. Ganz ohne Abgrenzung zu den Besucherpfaden. Das hat mich doch etwas beunruhigt, sodass ich meine Wanderung entlang der zwei Hauptpfade (Costal Trail und Migratory Bird Trail) im Naturschutzgebiet etwas schneller beendet habe als ich es sonst getan hätte. Trotzdem bekam ich einen wundervollen Einblick, wie es in Singapur aussehen würde, wenn hier kein u-/dystopische Megastadt stünde.

      Today, I explored the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve. This nature reserve is located in the northern part of Singapore, near the border with Malaysia. Just on the journey there, I witnessed corners of Singapore that most tourists probably never see. Endless industrial areas, more litter than I expected in Singapore, and of course, jungle. I no longer felt like I was in the ultra-modern metropolis of Singapore but somewhere more remote. The wetland itself is not particularly large, but every inch is teeming with life: countless insects (unfortunately, numerous mosquitoes too), birds, monkeys, and even crocodiles coexist there, without any clear separation from the visitor paths. This did make me somewhat uneasy, prompting me to conclude my hike along the two main trails (Coastal Trail and Migratory Bird Trail) in the nature reserve a bit faster than I otherwise would have. Nonetheless, I gained a wonderful insight into what Singapore would look like if it weren't for the presence of this utopian/dystopian megacity.      Leia mais

      One Night in Singapore

      Unsere aktuelle Reiseetappe ist eine kleine Tour de Force: Morgens ging es los in Auckland zum Flughafen, um am frühen Nachmittag für 11 Stunden im Flieger zu verschwinden. Dieser trug uns nach Singapur, wo nach einem 13stündigen Layover der Weiterflug nach Vietnam auf uns wartete.

      13 Stunden Aufenthalt und eine super unkomplizierte Einreise, eigentlich die besten Voraussetzungen für einen kleinen Ausflug in die Stadt. Andererseits waren wir aber auch ganz schön müde, es war 22 Uhr, als wir in Downtown Singapur ankamen und trotz der späten Stunde war es immer noch ziemlich warm. Unsere Runde durch Singapur fiel also etwas kleiner als gedacht aus, aber einen ersten Eindruck von der Stadt haben wir zumindest bekommen. Den teilen wir hier und vielleicht lässt er sich ja irgendwann mal noch erweitern :)      Leia mais

      Four Days in Singapore

      MUSINGS ON SINGAPORE
      A must see, unique, technologically advanced and futuristic city! The leader of this country for fifty years seems to have been a “benevolent dictator” to get so many things done. Of note, it is documented in the biography that Nancy started to read that he donated $12 million of his money to help set up 2nd language schools to help preserve and promote Mandarin (giving some indication as to how much money he built up over time). We’ve been able to see the multiple HBC (low income) houses, no street people, feeling safe, extremely clean environment and witnessed lux public transport and organized green spaces. Amazing to think we saw a Kingfisher Bluebird fly on to one of the high-tech trees at Garden’s By the Bay. We have tuned into the Asian News network and there seems to be a lot of momentum towards solving the plastic problem, green technology and attention to promoting the physical and mental health of people (eg if you reach the desired step count on the government program app, you get paid back in credits to buying healthy food!). We both felt much inspiration and hope to be found in this financially rich country that has optimized its special position as hub in East West shipping. Some would be critical of the over regulation and forced change and there is no doubt loss involved in the move to skyscapper vs kampong living. We found that people are not as genuinely warm, but very helpful, perhaps a reflection of a large city with "rules". We would stay in the Bencoolen area again as it was very convenient with the MRT at our doorsteps. Similar to the last locations, coffee and breakfast could open earlier for us, so something on site would be preferable to get going given that it is almost always hot and humid here.Leia mais

      Silvester in Singapur

      Bei entspannten 26 Grad und Monsumregen bin ich super ins neue Jahr gestartet. Perfekte Sicht vom Theater an der Esplanade konnte ich die Lichtershow und Feuerwerk beobachten.
      Trotz des Wetters war ich tatsächlich nicht allein...viele tausend andere Menschen mit Regenschirm waren auch da...den hatte ich nicht 😂😂😂 so kam ich also pirsche patsche nass wieder im Hotel an. Selbst meine wasserdichten Schuhe, die auf der Reise alles ausgehalten haben, konnten dem nicht standhalten 🤣🤣🤣
      Es war aber für gute Unterhaltung mit Live-Band gesorgt und die Zeit verging ganz gut.
      Ein sehr schönes Feuerwerk, genau wie erhofft mit der Skyline 👌👌👌

      Food and friends

      After a short ferry ride from Batam back to Singapore we spent the next few days eating and catching up with friends. We got to see Derrick and Lynn's new, beautifully renovated, HDB apartment in Seragoon and had a delicious cheese tart for dessert - which the wisconsinites obviously loved.

      We spent Wednesday eating more Xiao Long Bao, exploring the reservoirs and capped the day off with dinner at Haidilao with Igor's Jurong colleagues and friends. Haidilao is a famous Chinese chain, where they serve you snacks and offer free manicures to those waiting for a seat! And they provide you with aprons, phone chargers, and even cribs (if you have a sleepy baby) while you enjoy your tasty hotpot.      Leia mais
