      Jubilee walk, shopping, zoo/night safari

      Another big day! We started off walking the jubilee walk along the old river front. It was great to see the old buildings which are part of Singapore’s history as a free harbor. There were boats crossing the river but we stayed on the promenade and admired the contrasting views of old buildings and ships vs. skyscrapers. And we also saw the famous Merlion Singapore’s mascot animal half lion, half fish.

      As the heat and sun started the burn down on us, we went for shelter in an ice-cold Starbucks with a Matcha Frappuccino :-)

      We then went into another mall for some Yoga clothes shopping (Anna needs to be prepared for Indonesia) and then met with Lara, a friend from Munich, to go visit Singapore Zoo. The bus ride there was already an adventure as the bus was filled with pet animals :-)

      The visit started out great with free-roaming monkeys 🐒 in the trees, a herd of white rhinos 🦏🦏 , giraffe 🦒 feeding. The latter was - in true Singapore style - available as an upgrade and for “only 5$ you can feed the giraffe yourself”. Everything is for sale here.

      We then continued to a large territory for birds and flying foxes which look a bit like bats but are cuter and bigger. Unfortunately, it soon started to rain ☔️ and it did not stop for 1.5 hours ;-/ We could not make use of our - also dearly paid for - tram tickets as the tram was always full with people and once we got in, the thunderstorm was in full bloom. The craziest thing was a lightning striking next to us with electric buzzing audible seconds before :-O

       We still had the highlight of the day coming, though: we also booking tickets for the night safari and loved it. First comes a 40-minuted tram ride - with commentary on the animals that one sees but overall too noisy and loud. We were especially sorry for the animals at this point but maybe they were already accustomed? They did not seem too mind too much, especially the smaller ones. A great opportunity was that one can additionally tour the night zoo on foot and it was great to see so many nocturnal animals minding their business: hippos, bats, flying foxes, lions, tigers, various smaller cat-like creatures on trees, porcupines... really cool!       Night Safari

      Night zoo in Singapore hosting only nocturnal animals! You explore the place in the dark on a tram then after are free to wonder the trails (in the dark) and visit the animals, some enclosures like the Wallaby enclosure you were inside with them! Nothing more terrifying than a rustle in the bushes and a massive Wallaby coming springing out! After I did the lion train and saw Malayan Tigers, Spotted Hyenas, Clouded Leopards, Binturongs, Asian Elephants, Asiatic Black Bears and many more!Weiterlesen

      Singapore Zoo

      We went to the Zoo yesterday! Keeping up Claires travel tradition made her fall into french mode right upon entering the Zoo. The Zoo was pretty cool - except for the daily Singapore rain which trapped us inside a food court (OH NO) for like 2 hours. With the climate they have you can imagine the alleys full of green vegetation always giving you the feeling to be in a (very clean and tidy) jungle. The zoo is actually located within one of the few areas in Singapore where there still is primary rain forest. But of course this very part is not natural anymore. We saw some decent shows but what was more fun was the Night Safari. An extra zoo which you can only visit after sunset at 7.30pm as all their nocturnal animals are most active at this time. A zoo in the dark is a nice thing. So you can go see a tiger being fed really close. It was like just 1 meter away, only separated through a thick layer of glass. The African Lion is definitely more impressive than the Asian one. With the low light and when not moving, the animals sometimes looked as they were stuffed. And most importantly, we saw a Slow Loris (!!) climbing a branch just in front of us very slowly of course.

      Immer noch in Singapur

      18. August 2018 in Singapur ⋅ 32 °C

      Samstag: Heute waren wir im Zoo. Ich mag keine Zoos! Daher wollte ich erstmal auch gar nicht dahin. Aber schließlich konnte Yannik mich dann doch noch überreden und für einen Zoo war es auch ganz ok. Es gibt viele kleinere Tiere wie „Mini Monkeys“ und Lemuren, die sich im ganzen Zoo frei bewegen können. Anfassen und füttern ist natürlich verboten. Aber auch die Orang-Utans konnten sich in einem gewissem Raum ohne Zäune bewegen. Außerdem sind fast alle Gehege wirklich groß und die Tiere haben einen großen Auslauf. Mein Lieblingstiere waren hier die Otter, sie sahen am glücklichsten aus. Wobei das Schmetterlingshaus auch toll war. Dort haben nebenan Faultiere, andere Lemuren und riesige(!) Fledermäuse gewohnt.

      Nachmittags waren wir auf der Orchard Rd, wo wir uns die Malls angeguckt haben. Diese sind fast alle miteinander verbunden und eine der Lieblingsbeschäftigung der Singapurianer. Außerdem haben wir bei McDonalds Durian Eis probiert. Der Geschmack an sich ist gar nicht so schlecht, aber der Geruch ist wirklich schlimm. Das Eis hat gestunken, mir war bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt gar nicht klar, dass das überhaupt möglich ist.

      Sonntag: Wir waren mit Ronnie, Gloria und den Jungs brunchen. Uns wurde geraten das Toast zu probiere... und es war überraschend lecker. Auf dem Toast war sehr salzige Butter und darauf eine Schicht Marmelade mit Kokosnuss Geschmack. Leider haben wir den Namen vergessen.

      Singapore Zoo

      Hüt simmer numal de Tierli nache, diesmal in Singapore Zoo, chli usserhalb vum Stadtzentrum. Es sig eine vu de schönschte Zoos vu dr Welt - leider aber au mit vilne kreischende und klopfende Kiddies, so as sich mängi Tier verständlicherwis ins hinderschte Eck vum Gheg verchrüched... es het hie unglaublich vil Arte Schildkröte und au suscht vil Tier, womer nu gar nie (oder zumindescht nid in Echt) gseh het. So zum Bispil Alligator Snapping Turtle, Pygmy Hippo (öppe 10x chliner als es normals Nilpferd), Cassowary (schwarzi Laufvögel mit farbigem Chopf us Australie), 3-horned Rhino Beetle, Puma, Otter oder au euse erscht Komodo Waran. Am beschte het eus de Malayan Flying Fox gfalle, en zuetrauliche flügende Hund wo sich in aller Rueh am putze und am fresse isch gsi.
      Natürlich hemmer da au paar neui Fun Facts glernt: so wachsed Kängurus es Lebe lang, de Unterschied vu Monkeys zu Apes isch de (fehlend) Schwanz und Komodo Warare essed bis zu 90% vu ihrem Körpergwicht pro Mahlzit. Zudem hemmer numal riesigi Krokodil bstunt: während de Mänsch grad mal 41kg Bisschraft het, sinds bi de Krokos 1'361kg! Trotzdem hends nur sehr schwachi Muskle zum dSchnauze ufzsperre, darum langed es eifachs Gummiband um es 2m Krokodil unschädlich zmache!
      Passend zu dere riesige Masoala Halle hets hüt immer chli gregelet und meh oder weniger durchgehend donneret... währendem stärchste Platzrege hemmer i eim vu de Pavillions es Nickerchen ghalte :)
      Dernach simmer mimne sehr gschwätzige Taxifahrer zrugg id Stadt gfahre - sini halb Lebensgschicht heter eus verzellt! Als Singapore Abschluss simmer (zimli underdressed aber dankem Rege mal nid verschwitzt) zumene feine Italiener ga esse... und da het dMartina bi dr Wii-Charte nid schlecht gstuuned, sogar ihre Lieblingswii Ripassa hends da gha! Somit lemmer euses Zivilisations-Erlebnis gediege usklinge und schlemmed numal so richtig westlich :)*      Weiterlesen

      Nightzoo

      Wir waren gestern zum Abschluss unseres Singapuraufenthaltes zur Nightsafari im Zoo von Singapur. Hauptsächlich weil wir Mia einen Freude machen sollten. Tja was soll ich sagen... Kann man machen. Muss man aber nicht.

      Der Preis alleine ist da nicht einmal das Problem sondern die Massen an Menschen. Ich war damit richtig überfordert. Überall anstehen und warten und meine Stimmung war im Keller.

      Die Rundfahrt selbst in der Nacht durch den Zoo war sehenswert und wirklich cool. Mia war happy. Nur bei Alex war der Spaß vorbei, wo er sich 23 Uhr noch ein Bier in 7Eleven kaufen wollte und ihm keins ausgehändigt wurde. Ab 22.30 Uhr darf kein Alkohol mehr in Supermärkten verkauft werden. 🤣      Weiterlesen

      3 Zoos Pt 3

      At 3:29 it started to rain and the 3:30 Orangutan feeding was cancelled. Then it started to pour and it became a heat storm full of lighting and thunder. There was a man and a woman I met when watching the chimpanzees earlier who met while traveling and are now just travel buddies who only meet up when they don’t have someone to travel with. We were all disappointed about the storm but we sat and talked for the hour while it stormed until they left the zoo and I went to meet M for the River Safari. The River Safari was a separate entrance that took you through different species of different rivers around the world, plus pandas, though one was hiding. We also got a boat ride on the reservoir and I saw the “Maned Wolf”, an animal I didn’t know existed which is stunning! We wrapped up the night at the Night Safari. The Night Safari was yet another zoo which opened from 7:15pm to 12am only. Of course this zoo showcased nocturnal animals. We saw the Fishing Cat in action, a sloth bear that wanted to eat us, bats, a white lion and Asian lions, Asian elephants, leopards, pangolin, and some others I never heard of. The zoo was really awesome though and felt like we were really in the wild and could actually see the animals in action.Weiterlesen

      3 Zoos Pt 2

      Next I headed straight to the giraffes where I got to do the same thing. This Giraffe was a bit more interested in me than the elephant was, but not by much. The Giraffes were located next to the bank of the reservoir which would later be the body of water for our River Safari. I also so a baby chimpanzee, a stunning toucan looking bird, and a lemur that looked annoyed as hell we were preventing hi/her from a lazy nap. I also saw the toilet pictures below at the zoo. Some Asian countries squat to do a poo and it is frowned upon to stand on the toilet seat to this, so here a toilet specifically designed for this purpose. On the other extreme, Japan has a bidet even in public places. Funny to think that even though we are all people, how we poo is really important to us and how we do it is quite different depending which country you come from.Weiterlesen

      3 Zoos Pt 1

      Even though it was scheduled as my “travel to Singapore” day, it was Monday and M had to work. He also wasn’t as excited about going to the Zoo so I took the opportunity to go alone. As soon as I got to the zoo I hurried to the elephants. For $5 SGD you could feed an Asian Elephant. The one I got to feed carrots and bananas to was less interested in bonding with me or getting a pat but more interested in not having lag time between bananas. Still an awesome experience and even better when the $5 goes to animal conservation. Also pictured here is the “Eco-Link” which is basically a bridge for wildlife. This was just above the highway and I got to snap a quick picture while in the “Grab” on the way to the zoo.Weiterlesen
