      Wieder Camping, nochmals am Meer, aber ohne Glamping, sprich Sonja hat auch wieder im Bus geschlafen. Runa hält gerne die Füsse ins Meer, Aira baut Sandburgen und Sandgärten, Sonja steht nochmals im Meer und ich geniesse weiteres Salzwasserbaden.
      Das Essen ist ok, etwas langweilig. Dafür ist eine Velofahrt in der grossen Bucht von l'Escala Richtung Roses toll.
      Kinderunterhaltung, Pumptrack, etc. alles inkl bei diesen "camping resorts".
      Und bevor wir Spanien verlassen müssen wir sogar mal die Regensachen anziehen.      Læs mere

      Short trip to Escala, campcite in the village, close to beach and everything. More to come.

      Strolled on the seafront and into town. Lovely small town, bit quiet on a Sunday, and it's not yet the season. But I like these kind of places very much, especially out of season.
      Children playing in the sea in their underwear, small boats. I love it.      Læs mere

      Nach drei eindrucksvollen Wochen haben wir Frankreich für's erste verlassen und sind über die Ausläufer der Pyrenäen weiter nach Spanien gefahren. Die letzten Wochen vergingen unfassbar schnell und zeigten uns ein weiteres Mal wie wichtig es ist jeden Moment zu jeder Zeit voll auszukosten. In Frankreich bedeutete das für uns vor allem viel Zeit in der Natur zu verbringen. Allerdings war es hin und wieder eine willkommene Abwechslung durch die ein oder andere Stadt zu schlendern und sich von der Atmosphäre dort treiben zu lassen.
      Auch wenn der Winter mittlerweile hier angekommen ist und die Nächte spürbar kälter geworden sind, waren wir froh die Schönheit des Landes nicht mit unzähligen Touristen teilen zu müssen. Schon jetzt freuen wir uns auf eine Rückkehr nach Frankreich in einigen Monaten, wenn wir an der Atlantikküste wieder gen Norden fahren.
      Um noch etwas länger von den kulinarischen Köstlichkeiten zehren zu können haben wir uns gestern noch mit den unterschiedlichsten Käsesorten eingedeckt. Weniger - als den Käse - vermissen werden wir vermutlich die riesigen Lebensmittelgeschäfte und die unzähligen Kreisverkehre, die die Franzosen einer Ampel in jedem Fall vorzuziehen scheinen.

      Chilling

      We decided to stay here for another day and although we had a couple of tentative plans for how to spend it we have basically not done very much. Sitting in the campsite this morning reading our books and sitting on the beach this afternoon reading our books.

      The most exciting it got was realising we had accidentally bought chicken soup instead of chicken stock and having to make a risotto with it. It turned out ok anyway.

      Moving on tomorrow... we are approaching the half way point of our trip and I have booked a surprise hotel/spa break for a couple of nights in the Pyrenees.      Læs mere

      L‘Escala

      Es ist noch nebelig, als wir heute morgen losziehen. Der erste Teil der Etappe geht hinauf in einen verwunschenen Wald den GR entlang. Wir beschließen diesen nach ein paar Kilometern zu verlassen und biegen auf einen lokalen Wanderweg mit Gestrüpp ab. Diese Entscheidung bereuen wir bald. Der Weg führt über loses Geröll steil hinunter in eine Bucht. Verschwitzt und leicht zitternd machen wir dort erstmal Pause und studieren den Wanderführer. Dort ist der Weg in die kleine Bucht gar nicht eingezeichnet, obwohl er auf meiner App ganz klar als Cami de Ronda zu erkennen ist.
      Unser Wanderführer warnt uns stattdessen vor dem 2. Teil der Strecke, da hier der Cami rutschig und schmal über eine große Strecke an der Steilküste entlang führen würde.
      Nachdem wir uns aus der steilen Bucht wieder herausgekämpft haben, können wir über den Klippenpfad nur lächeln aber die Landschaft genießen.
      Im kleinen Badeort Montgo stürzen wir uns auf Cola und Limonade, bevor uns ein Naturreservat bis nach L‘Escala führt. Der Ort beeindruckt trotz seiner kilometerlangen Strandpromenade nicht wirklich. Viele der zahlreichen Cafes und Restaurants sind verweist oder im Umbau. Unser Hotel tröstet uns dafür mit einem Upgrade. Unser ursprünglich gebuchtes kleines Doppelzimmer wird zu einem Zimmer mit 2 riesigen Betten, Terrasse und Meeresblick 😎      Læs mere

      Practical stuff

      For most of this trip we have been sleeping inside the van on the rock and roll bed. While we are at this site we are experimenting with sleeping in the pop top.

      It feels more like camping, which is nice. Also, it avoids the faff of having to make the bed every night, we can just leave our bedding where it is and push everything up into the pop top during the day. Much more convenient.

      The only downside is our nightly wee, which I definitely need every night these days (it's an age thing!). We have to climb down into the van and use the porta-potty, then climb back. Oh well, can't have everything I suppose!

      Getting the bedding (which now includes two thin air mattresses from Decathlon as well as our 5cm thick Duvalay mattress topper) into the pop top in the first place is a bit of a hassle which is why we don't bother doing it if we are only staying somewhere for one night.

      We have also put up our air gazebo at this site - again, too much hassle for a one-night stop. This gives us somewhere warm to sit in the evening. I find sitting in the van a bit uncomfortable. No idea why, the seats in the van are very comfortable for driving. Annoyingly, we spent £70 on an electric pump for the gazebo and we can't make it work properly at the moment so having to inflate it by hand.

      Finally, we are not using many of the other facilities in the van much. We are not bothering to fill the water tank - it's so easy just to get water from the campsite taps as we need it - so not using the sink and no grey water to empty when we leave. And we are cooking outside on our Campingaz cooker, so not using the cooking facilities in the van either - think we have only used them once all trip. The grill is a complete waste of space and I think we will get it taken out and just use the space as extra storage when we get back. The fridge and associated storage shelves are brilliant though.

      We haven't wild-camped or used "aires" yet (free or cheap places to stop but with few facilities and not a lot of space). The aires in France have always looked too cramped for us - basically just carparks. The ones in Spain have had more space but we are now in the habit of searching for campsites not aires and planning ahead for an aire feels a bit high risk.      Læs mere

      Begur and L'Escala/Montgó

      I (Andy) was awake early, like before 7, which used to happen regularly at home but hasn't happened nearly as much on this trip. Fresh air and exercise does wonders. Anyway, I left Sara in bed and walked to the viewpoint overlooking L'Estartit. Lovely.

      Then breakfast - porridge, seeds, peanut butter and fruit - as always!

      Then we decided to visit Begur where we had a lovely couple of hours visiting the castle, the church, a few (up-market) shops, and a museum followed by a proper tapas lunch that was delicious.

      After lunch we drove to Illa Mateua Càmping Resort at L'Escala (though we think it is closer to Montgó, which is a lovely little bay). It's about 30 minutes up the coast from where we were.

      We have booked in for two nights.

      We stopped off at a camping shop on the way. See if you can spot our new purchase in the photos. Let's just say it takes us up in the world!

      Ham, eggs and patatas bravas for tea, which is the closest we can easily get to ham, eggs and chips on our little camping stove!

      Weather not great today but looks better tomorrow. We decided to walk around the headland to keep warm before tea and it turned out to be further, and higher, than we expected but had some great views.      Læs mere

      Empuries

      On avait loupé l'escale à l'aller, ça tombe bien on peut s'y arrêter au retour !
      Nous accostons à l'Escala Empuries connue pour ses vestiges archéologiques et évidemment ses belles plages. Nous sommes fort contents car nous trouvons une place de choix pour nos deux jours avec une super vue. (merci aux applications de caravaning)

      Premier jour : Visite du site archéologique qui en compte finalement 2 : un site grec et un site romain puisque la ville a été fondée par les Phocéens puis a été colonisée par Les Romains qui en firent un comptoir commercial. On y trouve les restes d'un forum, de maisons, de citernes d'eau douce, d'amphitheatre, de thermes... Heureusement que le guide audio est bien réalisé car on a du mal à se l'imaginer.

      Le point bonus pour le jeu des 1000 euros : Avant de commencer un projet les Romains s'en remettaient aux augures, surtout pour un projet d'envergure comme la construction d'une ville. Ces derniers observaient les oiseaux et ainsi donnaient leurs prédictions. C'est donc de là que vient le verbe inAUGUREr. De rien ! ☺️

      Le deuxième jour nous découvrons la ville et l'ancienne ville très charmante faite de vieilles pierres.      Læs mere

      L'Escala 😎

      Über den Berg nach L'Escala.....wie immer hat mein Schatz eine wunderschöne holprige 😁 Tour ausgesucht!

      Nach L'Escala....über Stock und Stein, aber es hat sich wie immer gelohnt 🤗.... obwohl er meine Kommentare ( ich fahr immer hinterher) nicht immer hören darf (oder überhören will ) 🤣🤣

      Eine wunderschöne kleine Stadt die im Sommer von Touristen überrannt wird, aber um diese Zeit wie ausgestorben Ist ! Aber ehrlich.....so ein kleines bisschen Leben hat schon auch was 🤗

      Übrigens....der Cami der Ronda, der berühmte Weg entlang der Costa Brava, geht hier auch vorbei ! Wir lieben ihn.....und haben schon einige Strecken davon abgewandert 🤗

      Illa Mateua Càmping to Punta Ventosa

      Another day, another walk… this time to Punta Venta, one of the nearer high points on the cliffs around Montgó. One of us had a quick dip on the way. Amazing views of the Gulf of Roses. The path was pretty close to the cliff edge at points.

      We walked back thru the woods, listening to the sing-song of the Sardinian Warbler (at least, that’s what the Merlín app told us) - didn’t see one. The paths around here are very rocky and uneven which means you can’t take your eyes off the ground without stopping.

      Lovely weather this afternoon. We may even have had a little nap!

      Off out for a proper meal this evening - getting dressed up and everything! :-)      Læs mere
