      Trabadelo to O Cebreiro 21km

      April 8 in Spain ⋅ 🌫 5 °C

So started out raining lightly. I brought an old raincoat that I used previously on the West Coast Trail.....well....it wasn't as water proof as I thought🥴

Anyway, I felt good and things were great until the light rain became a Classic Galicia Downpour!!!! Luckily there was a bar that was open after walking in it for an hour.

My 3 German friends stopped there as well. We decided as a group to press on to the next village 5 km away.

It was so muddy and impossible to keep ones feet dry🥴

When we reached the next Village it stopped raining and the sun even came out. Christian said she wanted to keep walking with me as our paces were similar.

We headed out after eating ( tortilla & cafe con leche) and this is where things started to fall apart.....

It started to rain and the trail was extremely muddy and getting steeper and steeper. We knew of we held on that La faba was 7 km away and there was an albergue there.

We arrived there and it was just pouring!!!! I was soaking wet ( should have brought my Camino rain gear 🥶) and we found out the Albergue didn't open until 2 pm.....it was 12 noon.
There was nothing open in this town.....so....we decided to keep walking.

Up and up and up....the rain turned into sleet......then into snow.....but we kept trudging along. We didn't have a choice to stop anyway. I did briefly to snap a few pics but honestly the low cloud hang obliterated the magnificent view!!

This is the highest altitude on the whole Camino.

We finally reached our Albergue at 2 pm. Shortly after arriving it started to snow even heavier. I saw a big snowplow that had been on the highway I think?

No stores were open so I settled on an Empanada.

We were able to dry our clothes but my boots are not really dry. I hope tomorrow they will be better.

The Albergue has 18 pilgrims or so.....It is toasty warm which is wonderful There are over 60 beds in one enormous room.

This has been quite the day!!
But shoutout to Merino wool and my Injinji socks!!!!! No blisters and I kept my core temp warm even though I was drenched.

      O Cebreiro

      October 23, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 45 °F

It was a great day! It was supposed to rain but it didn’t rain hard. We got our feet wet at our hats wet. But it was a great day. We got in by noon. We only walked 9 km today but it was up about 2000 feet. We had heard that today’s hike was going to be extremely difficult, but it was oversold. It wasn’t a bad hike at all. I guess living on the West Coast and hiking in the coast ranges, and in the Sierra has taught us some things.

This town is set up as a Celtic town. It is in the province of Galicia. We can’t tell if our hosts at our rural house are speaking, Portuguese or Galician! But it’s definitely not Spanish.

It’s rainy and cold outside but at least our radiator in our room is on kind of. It’s a little chilly in our room but at least the radiator is hoping to dry or wet socks, and hats. And we can eat our dinner here in the place we’re staying so we don’t have to wawander around a little town in the rain.

      O Cebreiro, Galicia

      October 25, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

We have crossed the border into Galicia, and are have some Galician soup to warm up after a wet and chilly ascent to this mountain ridge top village!

We met Rex and Kara Roundtree, a couple whose Facebook blog I have been following of their Camino trip. I recognized Rex as I passed him on the steep trail to La Fans and we all had coffee/tea together.

Trying to steel ourselves for another 12k this afternoon!

      The heatwave is over

      August 18, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

The maximum temperature for today was forecast to be 23°C. Not only the heatwave seems to be truly over, but we have also entered a cooler region. No need to set alarms at stupid hours before dawn anymore.
Today I woke up when I heard the noises of others getting up. Had a good breakfast, and when I was ready to leave I checked the weather: 7°C! I was glad to have a jacket to wear (a few days ago I was asking myself why I packed it at all).
Jinjoo is still starting her walks at 5am regardless, so I didn't see her. The German couple left while I was having breakfast. J&K were ready at about the same time as me, and Nelly was a few minutes behind. I wanted to make up for the night before, so I said to J&K to go, and I would wait and go with Nelly.

The first half of the walk went to O Cebreiro, just after entering Galicia. It was up, up and up, and very steep. We passed by a couple of small villages where we had a chance to take a break and have a drink. The day was cool but bright, and we enjoyed spectacular views.
Nelly heard from someone she met before who was now a day ahead: this person went up to O Cebreiro yesterday in heavy rain, and completely missed the views! We only had light rain yesterday and sunshine today. So lucky!

      Camino duro

      August 23, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

30 Km an der Hauptstrasse entlang war anstrengend- aber so rein gar nichts gegen diesen Aufstieg! Boah! Pause in la Falda! Read more

      La Faba

      July 25, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

We reached La Faba, a tiny, green, cool mountain town. I'm hoping this post will upload as the wifi is a little sketchy.... so I'll keep it short. We had a beautiful walk today, with fewer than 200 kilometers to go, with nearly 400 miles walked, without a day off. Still feeling strong, but missing home and my people.Read more

      Laguna de Castilla (16.2km /612km)

      May 29, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Now that was a climb! Not too long but steep and on some interesting surfaces including road, sandy path, mud, rocks and lots of cow poo! But thankfully mostly shady in the really steep bits. We climbed 2/3 of the “hill” to our accommodation to Laguna. Tomorrow we climb to the peak and onwards.
With hills we get beautiful scenery and some hard work. Too many pictures to choose from! At times we had to share the path with cows and horses! Before the hill the walk was slightly uphill along the river for about 10km to Las Hereirras where we refuelled with some coffee and cake!
We had drinks and dinner with a couple of people we met at Susi’s place last night, Clare (Wales) and Laure (France) and a lady we met today (Bea).
The villages and towns seem to be in much better condition the further we go with a lot more renovated buildings and active lifestyle.
On a personal note, today was my dad’s (Brian) birthday so we popped into a church on our way to say a prayer. Rest In Peace Dad ❤️, you would have loved todays walk.

      Second half of the walk

      August 18, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

Within a few minutes of leaving Nelly I found J&K, and then Theresa .I met them on and off, as we were walking at a different pace, but we were all going to the same albergue in Fonfría.
This part of the walk was undulating, not going up or down too much, but still surprisingly steep at times.Read more
