      Gewitter! Der Weg nach Gruben

      Was für eine Nacht! Gerade als wir schlafen wollten, hat sich im Tal ein Gewitter zusammen gebraut - sowas haben wir noch nicht erlebt. Eine Stunde lang gab es Starkregen, Hagel, hunderte Blitze und krasse Donner. ⚡️⛈️ Von oben sind wir trocken geblieben, aber das Spritzwasser vom Boden inkl. Dreck hat sich durch die Seitentüren des Zeltes einen Weg nach innen gebahnt. 😲 Aber alles halb so wild…
      Trotzdem haben wir heute morgen eine ganze Weile gebraucht, um das Zelt zumindest soweit trocken zu bekommen, dass es im Rucksack nicht so schwer ist. 🏋️
      Um 8 Uhr sind wir dann los marschiert um den Col Forcletta auf 2.874m zu erklimmen. Der Aufstieg war super steil und anstrengend und führte uns durch Wald, an einer Bergflanke entlang und über grasige und felsige Hügellandschaften. Während der ersten Pause haben wir dann auch nochmal schnell das Zelt raus geholt, um es von Sonne und Wind trocknen zu lassen 👍🏻Der Rundumblick vom Col war wie immer traumhaft schön! Während des folgenden Abstiegs nach Gruben konnten wir wieder das Weißhorn (4.505m) und seinen Gletscher bestaunen. Mit dem Überschreiten des Passes hat sich auch die Sprache auf den Wegweisern geändert: statt französisch ist nun deutsch die Amtssprache. Echt irre! Pünktlich mit beginnendem Regen sind wir in Gruben angekommen und haben dort erstmal die nasse Phase mit einem Kaffee im Hotel Schwarzhorn ausgesessen. Um halb sechs haben wir uns dann umliegend einen Biwakplatz gesucht. Morgen werden wir das Mattertal erreichen und somit unserem Ziel ganz nah sein.

      Bungy Niouc Bridge Switzerland

      Niouc Bridge was built in 1922, as a means to get water from one side of the valley to the other, its why you see a thick red pipe running along the top of the bridge.

      One of the staff members grew up there in the village and when she was little, years after the bridge had stopped being used for water, the local kids would run along jumping the gaps in the bridge from missing and broken wood 😬 with no safety precautions whatsoever 🤣

      The bridge was bought for its current purpose for the grand sum of 2 Swiss Francs, which was only due to the law in Switzerland stipulating you must make a profit from property sale... The guy who owned it before them bought it for 1 Swiss Franc 🤣

      Well anyway now it is a playground for adventurous travellers, you can bungee, swing, zipline & even walk the slackline which is at the end of the video

      It's the highest bungee jump in the world in terms of altitude, and said to be the most beautiful

      The people were lovely and we ended up camping there amongst the staff & their friends & families, who all stay here for the weekends in vans and a wood hut, and live in near villages through the week while there are no jumps booked

      The jumps themselves were incredible, though Lenny was a little traumatised 🙈 but he adored the rest of the day, the place is like a park so a playground loads of games and family friendly dogs & a fire etc

      Bern, Montreux und Höhenluft

      Nach gutem Hotelfrühstück geht's wieder rein in den Bus und nach 3 Stunden treffen wir Bern ein. Die 2 Stunden reichen gerade für einen ausgiebigen Rundgang durch die Altstadt, die aber sehenswert ist. Interessant ist die Einheitlichkeit der Häuser mit ihren Arkaden, den schräg liegenden Luken zu den Kellern, in denen sich heute hübsche Läden befinden, bis hin zu den Fassadenfarben die recht einheitlich zwischen Steingrau und Olivgrün schwanken dürfen.
      Das Wahrzeichen der Stadt war schlauer als all die Zweibeiner. Bei über 30°C im Schatten hing Meister Petz seinen Hintern ins kühle Nass und döste vor sich hin.
      Weiter ging's an den Genfer See, hier in Montreux allerdings Lac Léman genannt, wo die etwa gleiche verfügbare Zeit gut ausreichte, denn mehr als Palasthotel mit Park, viele Plastiken und ein Spaziergang auf der Uferpromenade standen nicht auf dem Programm, um sich einen Eindruck von diesem Chickie-Mickie-Städtchen zu verschaffen.
      Die Fahrt zum Hotel haben wir total unterschätzt, denn zum Schluss ging es endlos über eine teilweise einspurige Bergstraße und gefühlte 100 Serpentinen bergauf bis auf 1.500 m Höhe. Und diese Strecke werden wir noch genau 5 mal überwinden, denn hier sind 3 Tage Übernachtung angesagt (Hut ab vor unserem Busfahrer!). Dafür haben wir von unserem Balkon einen herrlichen Blick in die Landschaft bis hin zu drei Gletschern am Horizont.      Read more

      Let the German begin!

      From Zinal to Gruben. Cold, foggy, drizzling- perfect for the climb! Up, up, up- down down down. Beautiful and windy at the top! Photos really don’t capture it! Zinal was a skiing paradise and Gruben is a tiny hamlet with no store or any commercial buildings- just the hotel and maybe 25 homes.Read more

      Lac de Moiry - Val de Zinal

      Heute Nacht wurden wir plötzlich wach. Das Zelt windete sich im Sturm. Hagel und Regen prasselten auf das Zelt nieder. Der Rest der Nacht war sternenklar und wir konnten erholsam schlafen! ✨
      Pünktlich zum Sonnenaufgang um 6:25 Uhr sind wir aus dem Zelt raus und haben den Tag mit einem herrlichen Kaffee begonnen. ☕️
      Mit gepackten Rucksäcken ging es dann zunächst zum Staudamm des Lac de Moiry. Diesen mussten wir überqueren und haben dann den Aufstieg zum Col de Sorebois begonnen. Zunächst noch im Schatten des Berges, später aber in der prallen Sonne haben wir mühsam den Pass auf 2.836m erreicht. Von dort aus konnten wir das Weißhorn (zweithöchster freistehender Berg in der 🇨🇭) und das Zinalrothorn sehen. Der Abstieg nach Zinal war dann eher unspektakulär, denn er führte durch das Skigebiet… In Zinal haben wir heute unser Zelt auf dem Campingplatz aufgeschlagen. Ingesamt ein eher ruhiger Tag ohne viele Highlights.

      Day 11

      Arolla - Col de Torrent - Lac de Moiry

      Ein harter Anstieg und Gewitter standen heute bevor. Also sind wir früh aufgestanden, haben pünktlich unser vorbestelltes Baguette und die 3 Schokobrötchen in der Epicerie am Camingplatz abgeholt 😋 und sind erstmal größtenteils talabwärts nach La Sage gelaufen. Eine Pause und 2 Kaffee später sind wir wieder gestartet, um den Col de Torrent auf 2.916m Höhe zu erklimmen. Nach 3:15h hatten wir es endlich geschafft. Der anstrengende Aufstieg in der prallen Sonne hat ordentlich Energie gekostet. Wir wollten unbedingt vor dem Gewitter über den Pass sein. Glücklicher Weise hat sich das Wetter zum positiven gewendet und weder Regen noch Gewitter machten uns Probleme. Auf dem Col konnten wir dann also ein Pause machen und den herrlichen Ausblick nach Arolla (da kamen wir her) und zum Lac de Moiry (da gehen wir noch hin) genießen. Der azurblaue Gletschersee strahlte uns schon von weitem an. Doch zunächst ging es bergab zum Lac des Autannes. Von dort aus war es nicht mehr weit, bis wir einen unglaublich tollen Schlafplatz auf 2.555m gefunden hatten. Und der hat beste Sicht auf den Glacier de Moiry und den See. 🤗 Perfekt!👌🏼

      Funiculaire Adventure

      For our last day in Sierre, we took another new mode of transport - a funiculaire - up to the town and ski resort of Crans-Montana. We didn't realize just how ritzy of a ski resort town it was until we got there. We found some toys for everyone to play with, walked in the forest and in the streets, watched waterskiers while we had our picnic lunch, then headed back down the mountain. Then it was sadly time to pack up for our departure the next day. We very much enjoyed our time connecting with Anaïs and Laurent and the family, bringing such good energy to our time in Sierre. In their chill presence, we had time for very meaningful exchanges about life and our respective journeys, as they are very soon leaving on a family adventure to work on organic farms around France for a year. And after so many years since seeing Anaïs, it was fun to reminisce about the childhood adventures Holly and Anaïs' families shared. Anaïs generously offered both of us a reflexology session during our stay, and it was a great opportunity for unwinding from the pressure of the trip on our bodies and minds. We certainly left Sierre ready for the next challenge...Read more

      Day 19

      Up and over- Zinal

      A relaxing day to say the least! I decided to take the telecabine up and over the pass to my next town. It was going to be a pretty short chill day- I just decided to take a zero. The crazy lightening storm kept me up throughout the night as I watched and heard it develop. Wild. I’m glad I was comfortable in a valley hotel. On the way over the pass, I popped out to enter into a gathering- wine and a dj at 10:30 am with a view of all the cool peaks, including the Weisshorn! Definitely hitting the German influenced Swiss Alps. Then I went down and did a local river loop. For the third time, I bumped into Dave on my way back into town. I met Dave at my first lakeside cabane, then was at the same hotel in Le Sage. He’s a retired school counselor that worked in international schools for most of his career. His wife didn’t want to join him on this hike, so we’ll meet up for a beer before dinner tonight. I hit the spa and am now getting ready for the eating and drinking fest to begin!Read more

      Into the Swiss valleys

      After a rainy night with quite the lightening show, had a slow start to dry off. Beautiful path along the sooty Rhône with the wind at our back. This is what cycling is all about. Make a turn into the Valais valley and surrounded by vineyards. Building storm clouds keep us moving. End up going much farther than anticipated and manage to set up camp before the rain.Read more

      Swiss Birthday

      It was a rainy night and morning, and we felt lucky to be camped in a campground with comfortable indoor spaces to cook and eat - a good first experience of Swiss campgrounds! When the rain lightened up we pushed off for a ride up the Rhône. In a couple hours we arrived in Sierre to meet up with Anaïs, Laurent, Amaël (9 years old), and Lohan (5), and since we were arriving for Amaël's birthday party, the Michels were there as well to celebrate their grandson's birthday. We started eating at 1 pm, a delicious 'light' lunch, then after a short break, the birthday party started and we continued eating all evening. We got to chat with friends and family of Anaïs and Laurent and taste Swiss fare, with different dishes and drinks continuing to appear throughout the evening for the party guests to enjoy. Between the chickens and the children running through the garden, Claire was in her element as well!Read more
