  • Easy morning in Copenhagen

    27. lokakuuta 2022, Tanska ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

This morning we had a bit of a slow start as our only commitment for the day is lunch at 12.30. We headed out just after 9.30am to check out some stores for some Christmas decorations. None of the stores open until 10am so we were able to window shop and work out which stores we would like to check out once they opened. Neither of us had seen H & M Home before but they had some wonderful Christmas decorations. I tried to be good but it was pretty challenging as I love love love everything to do with Christmas.

We also found a great beauty store which was Danish called Matas- we found some wonderful products that were all very reasonably priced. Next we visited a gorgeous Department store called Illums Bolighus, which was so beautifully decorated and had such wonderful Christmas decorations it was hard to contain my enthusiasm.

We then went to Søstrene Grenes, which is a homewares, kitchenware, bric brac, art supplies etc type of store. We returned to get a few bits and pieces (mainly Christmas related) and then we headed back to the apartment to drop off our goodies and then head out for lunch.

  • Lunch at Restaurant Sankt Annæ

    27. lokakuuta 2022, Tanska ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

After dropping off our goodies from our successful retail therapy session we headed off for lunch, a 20 minute walk from the apartment. This restaurant was highly recommended by our host Anna. It was a lovely walk to the restaurant, we saw different sites of Copenhagen we hadn’t previously seen.

The restaurant was quite traditional, but lovely and we both decided on Smørrebrød. Brigitte chose smoked eel and eggs and I chose potatoes, onion, bacon and mayonnaise on pumpernickel- it was an absolutely delicious sandwich. We chose a wonderful German Pinot to accompany the meal. The Smørrebrød weren’t huge so we both had room for the chocolate cake which was probably one of the best chocolate cakes I have ever tasted. After lunch we strolled around the beautiful neighbourhood of Nyhavn, a 17th century waterfront, canal and entertainment district.

  • Cruising the Canals of Copenhagen

    28. lokakuuta 2022, Tanska ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

We decided since the weather is going to be sunny today we will do a one hour boat cruise to see some of the sites of Copenhagen. The boat was quite packed initially and we were sitting inside. Luckily when the boat stopped at Nyhavn many got off so we were able to relocate to the back of the boat and sit outside where we had a much better view.

We started at Ved Stranden and headed to Nyhavn, from there we went past the Christianborg Palace, Strøget, the Old Stock Exchange, the Royal Danish Playhouse, the Opera House, Holmen, The Sixtus Battery, The Little Mermaid, Kastellet which is also known as the Citadel, Gefion Fountain, Amalienborg Palace, Christiania, Our Saviours Church, the Black Diamond, which is also known as the Royal Library and the National Museum of Denmark.

As a general overview the boat tour is good, but it was nice then to return to specific areas on foot. I definitely had to go and see the Little Mermaid and saw some lovely other areas as a result.

  • Friday afternoon wandering

    28. lokakuuta 2022, Tanska ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

After the cruise we decided to return to Segall’s for lunch, obviously this is a favourite of ours as this is our third lunch there. This time I had the Croque Madame, which I can say is very good indeed, however, I still prefer the Segall Club sandwich. After lunch Brigitte decided to head back to the apartment as she had a very interrupted nights sleep due to the noisey patrons from the bar across the road from our apartment.

I decided to walk to the Little Mermaid to try and get a better shot than was possible from the boat tour. I walked along Larsen Plads, which was a lovely walk along the harbour. Even though there were many people at the Little Mermaid, I was still able to get a couple of good shots. The Little Mermaid was made by Edward Eriksen and erected in 1913. It was a gift from the Danish brewer Carl Jacobsen to the City of Copenhagen. The sculpture is made of bronze and granite and was inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale about a mermaid who gives up everything to be united with a young, handsome prince on land. Every morning and evening she swims to the surface from the bottom of the sea and, perched on her rock in the water, she stares longingly towards the shore hoping to catch a glimpse of her beloved prince. Carl Jacobsen fell in love with the character after watching a ballet performance based on the fairy tale at the Royal Danish Theatre. The brewer was so captivated by both the fairy tale and the ballet that he commissioned the sculptor Edward Eriksen to create a sculpture of the mermaid, Erikse’s wife Eline, posed for the statue.

To be honest, the mermaid is a little underwhelming, but still worth seeing. On the way back to the apartment I passed Gefion Fountain, St Albans Church, the Zinc Global Sculpture, Fredericks Church where there was a wedding underway and many other beautiful buildings and sculptures.

  • Operation Malmö

    29. lokakuuta 2022, Tanska ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

We had thought it would be a good idea to take the train to Malmö for a day trip. We headed out to the Central station and finally worked out how to purchase tickets. We made several attempts but failed - we finally asked a Danish guy to help us and he responded - use another machine. Once we did this we had success. We then headed down to the platform to wait for our train. Unfortunately there was some kind of “IT” issue that was causing havoc with the trains. We finally boarded a train to Malmö and after about 10 minutes we were advised that the train would be leaving in 47 minutes! We couldn’t believe it, the train kept getting fuller and fuller. After 20 minutes, we were advised to get off the train and board a train on platform 7 for Malmö.

At this point we had been at the station for about 90 minutes and we were loosing patience so we decided to abort our trip to Malmö, head back to the centre of town and have lunch, we went to a lovely Italian place near our apartment called the Amalfi. We had pizza and they were authentic and delicious. As I had over indulged last night I couldn’t stomach the thought of a wine, so I stuck to water and coffee!

After lunch we went back to Studio Arhoj so I could get a couple of pottery pieces that had caught my eye. We then returned to the apartment for a bit of a rest and so I could catch up on my blog. About 4pm we headed out to do a little more shopping as Emma’s birthday is coming up next week. Brigitte found a lovely leather backpack that we think Emma will love.

We then went for a bit more of a walk to get some more fresh air. While we were out I got a hankering for a hot dog - probably because I hadn’t eaten much and was still feeling a little hung over, and it was bloody delicious and exactly what the doctor ordered. We then headed back to the apartment for a quiet evening. Hopefully the people who frequent the bars nearby won’t keep us awake again tonight.

  • Night from hell…….

    30. lokakuuta 2022, Tanska ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

As I mentioned previously I had over indulged on Thursday night and so I was planning an early night to catch up on sleep. I fell asleep quite easily but woke up about 1.30am to loud noises above me. For the next three hours I put up with singing & “doof doof“ music and lots of jumping around. After 3 hours I had reached my limit, so I got dressed and went upstairs. I think I thumped on the door for about 2-3 minutes until the music stopped and someone answered the door. I tried to be polite and explained that I had been kept awake for the past 3 hours. The response from the young woman who answered the door was that it was Saturday night and what did I expect? She also said that as I was in an Airbnb I wasn’t really a resident. It was at this point I lost it - I started screaming at her saying she was a disrespectful selfish fucking cow - she just didn’t seem to care, so I then told her she could get fucked and stormed off. The noise stopped about 5 minutes later so my screaming must have had an impact - regardless, I felt better and I was able to finally fall asleep.

Brigitte slept through the whole thing as she had put in ear plugs. I woke up about 8.30 and we had a slow start to the day. The upstairs bitch has been a lot more quiet today, but she still stomps around and late this afternoon put on some crap music, but we just turned up the TV to drown it out so she gave up after about 10 minutes. Luckily this is our last night here, otherwise things may have got really ugly!

  • Christianshavn and Castle Island

    30. lokakuuta 2022, Tanska ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

It is a beautiful sunny day here in Copenhagen and it is their Election Day. We headed off to walk through Christiansborg palace, which is beautifully kept. We made our way towards Christianshavn, passing the Danish Architecture Centre, the National Library and many other delightful areas of Christianshavn - beautiful canals and architecture.

After wandering around for a couple of hours we started to get hungry and we couldn’t find anything suitable in the area and so I suggested we head back across he main canal and see if we could get into Segall for lunch. It seemed only right to have our last lunch in Copenhagen at our favourite restaurant. We were in luck Sebastian had a table and so we both had the Segall Club with a glass of wine. It has been really good to support a small business owner like Sebastian and I think he appreciated the support.

After lunch we headed back to the apartment to start packing and get ourselves organised for the trip back to Brussels. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in Copenhagen and I will definitely be back as it is a wonderful city.

  • Our last night in Copenhagen

    30. lokakuuta 2022, Tanska ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Brigitte and I are creatures of habit - so for our last dinner we decided to return to Le Pavé, the French restaurant we had dined at on our first night. We were not disappointed. Brigitte had the rib eye steak with frites and I had the lamb with potatoes, vegetables and a thyme sauce and both were excellent. We again had a bottle of Pinot from Bourgogne and it was a lovely relaxed dinner. The streets were a bit foggy for our quick walk home - maybe København is preparing for Halloween, the Danes appear to celebrate Halloween with a lot of enthusiasm. We then went home watched a bit of Netflix and I can report that we both had a good night’s sleep without any noise or problems from the people upstairs.

Today is a travel day, our host Anna has kindly offered to come and take our cases down for us and I have ordered a taxi. Next post we will be back in Brussels.

  • Heading back to my temporary home

    31. lokakuuta 2022, Tanska ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

We are heading back to Brussels this morning after a lovely week in Copenhagen. We arranged for a taxi to pick us up at 9am and so our host Anna arranged to meet us at 8.45 to carry our bags (much heavier than when we arrived!) down the 3 flights of stairs for us.

Although we loved Copenhagen we found that the young Danes liked to party hard, loud and late and as we were living right in the centre there was some noise to contend with. Most of the time it was ok but there were a couple of occasions where it was difficult. We didn’t realise how much the Danes liked to drink but each morning down our street there were the remnants of their partying.

Our taxi ride to the airport was very quick and check in was also quick and easy. I had planned to claim back the tax on some items but discovered I can’t do that until I leave the EU - so I will have to see if I can do it at Brussels MIDI where I will catch the Eurostar to London.

Once we got through security we found a lovely restaurant and had brunch. We then wandered around the airport waiting for our flight to be allocated a gate. Unfortunately, our flight was delayed 50 minutes due to a truck at Brussels airport hitting the plane and so it couldn’t leave until an engineer gave the all clear.

Finally we were on our way, our flight was quick and uneventful and we were at the baggage carousel in no time, only to see on the board that our luggage was ‘delayed’. So we had to wait about 30 minutes for it to come out and we weren’t provided with any explanation.

Steph picked us up and then we had a quiet night before I headed to bed even before Brigitte, which is unheard of for me.

  • Lovely Day in Limal

    1. marraskuuta 2022, Belgia ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

Had quite the sleep in this morning and a very slow start to the day. I got my washing done, we had lunch and then Brigitte and I went for a lovely walk in the woods which are just up her street. We took a different path to see if we could locate the wood carvings that had been done by local artists in honour of a friend who had passed away from a brain tumour over a year earlier.

After initially missing the path as we were talking we doubled back and found a few carvings along a path, plus the place where his ashes were scattered. Brigitte thinks some of the carvings have been removed which is terrible as they were done to honour Dominique and his contributions both to society and the arts.

Nonetheless we had an enjoyable walk in the beautiful clean air of Limal and tonight Nathalie, Steph, Sohan and Emma are coming for dinner.

    1. marraskuuta 2022, Belgia ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

Tonight Nathalie, Sohan, Stéphane and Emma are coming over for dinner. Brigitte is making her delicious Spaghetti Bolognaise. Sohan will be spending a few days with us as Nathalie is working and he has school holidays. Stéph isn’t feeling well, so he is here but keeping his distance.

Lia is also here tonight and although Stéph is her favourite, she has taken quite a liking to me also!

We have a lovely evening, the Spaghetti Bolognaise is delicious and we have a special tart that Steph has been promising to bring for two years apparently. It is called Tart Vi Paurin a speciality of Rixensart which is a delicious tart of apples, raisins, crème anglaise, caramelised almonds and rum.

It was great to have a nice relaxed dinner with the famille Mouchette, unfortunately Luc had headed to his property in France for a couple of weeks, so he wasn’t there.

    2. marraskuuta 2022, Belgia ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

We were very lucky again today with the weather - blue skies and sunshine - although a little windy. As Sohan is with us for a few days we thought it would be nice to visit the city centre and have lunch.

We drove to Delta metro and we were very lucky with getting a park immediately. We then caught the metro the rest of the way to the city. There were a few people but it wasn’t too crowded when we arrived. Christmas decorations are all up and would look great at night.

We walked around the main shopping strips and then headed to the Grand Place, where we took some nice photos with the beautiful blue sky and sunshine making the Grand Place look magnificent. We also went to the covered Galleries where I got Sohan some chocolates from Mary. We then went to see Jeanneke-Pis which didn’t impress Sohan, so we headed to lunch. We returned to our favourite Italian restaurant- Sole d’Italia. We got the table in the window which was lovely and we all ordered pizza. It was a lovely outing.

Later this afternoon Stéphane and Emma dropped by for a visit. As it is Emma’s birthday tomorrow and we won’t see her I gave her bracelet today, which she really liked. We will hopefully see her on Friday, as the plan is for Brigitte and I to take the kids to the Chocolate Nation in Antwerp.

  • Paying our respects

    3. marraskuuta 2022, Belgia ⋅ 🌧 14 °C

The tradition here in Belgium is to visit loved ones who have passed away on 1 November, which is a public holiday here and known as “All Saints Day”. As we only returned from Denmark on 31/10 and because the cemeteries are so busy on 1/11 we decided to delay our visit by a couple of days.

Brigitte’s parents, Wim Pleysier and Paulette Ollivier, as well as being my uncle and aunt were my godparents. They also, let me stay with them in Paris when I travelled in my twenties, they were wonderful people who I have some great memories of. They also gave me some wonderful experiences when I would visit. I got to stay with them in their apartment in Cannes and I went skiing in the Swiss Mountains, visited Geneva and many other beautiful cities with them over the years.

They also opened their heart and home to Ian and Angus when we visited Belgium in 2001. Then again in 2008 we spent Christmas with Paulette and her family in Brussels which was wonderful. I then didn’t get the chance to visit until 2018, when I came to Brussels after Ian and Angus headed home after our European holiday. I stayed predominantly with Brigitte but spent my last few days with Paulette. Then in 2019 Ian and I spent another week in Brussels which turned out to be the final opportunity I would have to spend time with my dear and favourite aunt Paulette. Not long after we left Brussels she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and passed away in early 2020.

I am not one for cemeteries, but I have to say the one where Wim and Paulette are in Everberg is small and beautifully maintained.

  • Fairly quiet relaxed day

    4. marraskuuta 2022, Belgia ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

We had planned to take Emma and Sohan to Chocolate Nation in Antwerp today, however, poor Emma wasn’t well, in fact she started getting a sore throat on Thursday which was her birthday. With our excursion to Antwerp off we had a pretty lazy day, did a bit of reading and watching Netflix. Brigitte has introduced me to The 100 and although I enjoyed the first couple of seasons, the 3rd season is not doing it for me. It could be that I am watching it in French so that I can improve my language skills, but the storyline is getting more and more complicated which makes it much more difficult for me to keep up.

As I said Sohan has been staying with us and we have done a few activities with him, but he seems most interested in playing on his Nintendo or tablet and gets grumpy when his grandmother suggests he is on it too much. We came to an impasse- all Brigitte wanted to do was discuss some boundaries, he shut down, got hysterical and wouldn’t talk. In the end his Dad came to get him mid-afternoon and I must say it was a relief when he left. Brigitte and I think he is addicted to playing on his screens and I think he will have a big adjustment to make when he returns to school next week.

We decided we needed some air so we went for a lovely late afternoon walk to the forest that is at the end of Brigitte’s street. It was lovely to get out into the fresh air, we met loads of people walking their dogs which was nice. We just had a light dinner after I had been pigging out on these Paprika Bugles which are so moorish and delicious, I don’t think I have seen them in Oz which is probably good for me as I find it hard to stop eating them.

After the dramas of the day we were both pretty tired and so we had an early night.

  • Day trip to Leuven

    5. marraskuuta 2022, Belgia ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

We decided to take a day trip to Leuven, a lovely University Town about 35 minutes by train from Brigitte’s. I was able to book our tickets using my Trainline App which has been so easy and stress free. We headed off to the station of Limal to wait for the train, which was on time and very comfortable. We stopped in the villages or towns of Wavre, Basse Wavre, Gastuche, Archennes, Florival, Pecrot - up until now everything was in French, when we got to the next village Sint-Joris Weert, everything changed to Flemish. The other villages we went through were Oud-Heverlee, Heverleen ( in this village the train station was for sale - it was a beautiful building but sits on the platform). We then arrived in Leuven (Louvain in French), this name changing can be very confusing for a tourist!

We arrived at the allotted time and walked into the centre of town. Leuven is a rather beautiful city, very clean with lots of bike riders and cars banned from many of the airy streets. With there being a University Town it also has quite a young population which gives the place a nice vibe. We walked up to the town hall which is a beautiful and ornate building which is in excellent condition. We wandered around the Central Place (Square) and then just meandered down some of the smaller streets and laneways looking for a place for lunch.

  • Lunch and beyond in Leuven

    5. marraskuuta 2022, Belgia ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

We found a fabulous authentic Italian restaurant where we had a really wonderful lunch with a delicious bottle of red from Puglia. Brigitte had grilled scampi and I had the fettuccine with a lovely seafood sauce - full of mussels, vongole and scampi - both meals got the thumbs up as did the wine.

Following lunch we did some more wandering around the streets, we went past the old market square, a lovely food market where all the produce is grown by the sellers and we also passed lots of lovely stores, but I resisted temptation.

We found a fabulous sculpture by Fred Bellefroid called De Kotmadam and another by P Vanbekbergen called Paep Thoon. Both were excellent with lots of character.

Be for we knew it, it was time to head back to the station to catch our train back to Limal, we arrived around 4.30 and decided we would have a quiet night in as we had had a large meal at Lunchtime.

We started with some Old Amsterdam cheese and a glass of Australian Shiraz. For dinner we just had some toast and cheese.

Today we had a slow start and also got a few things done around the house and garden (washed and rehung the curtains and raked up leaves in the garden) before we head off to Holland tomorrow.

Gui and Geertje had invited us over for lunch which was a lovely afternoon - great food, great wine and lovely company. Today the weather has been pretty grey and wet and so we weren’t able to go for a walk with Gui and his gorgeous dog Pablo.

Geertje is a wonderful cook and today, after some lovely snacks and champagne we had a delicious lunch inspired by Gennaro Contaldo. We had meatballs with herbs, garlic and spaghetti, roasted capsicum salad and a green bean salad. For dessert we had apple crumble - made with apples from their own tree. The entire meal was so good and the crumble was so delicious that I had 2 serves but forgot to take a picture. It was a wonderful day and now I am stuffed to the gills, so it will be toast or yoghurt for dinner tonight I think.

  • Brussels to Amstermdam

    7. marraskuuta 2022, Alankomaat ⋅ 🌧 11 °C

I am finally going to make it to Amsterdam- YEAH🎉🥳💜- Brigitte and I had planned to visit in 2018 but because of a calf injury (Brigitte) we pulled the plug and went to the Opal Coast in Northern France instead.

We took a taxi from Limal to Brussels MIDI where we caught our train. There were only three stops during the trip - Antwerp, Rotterdam and Amsterdam airport and in 2 hours we arrived at Amsterdam Centraal Station.

It is a very nice station, but very big and easy to loose your way. We finally made it outside and it is a little cool and although rain is predicted and it had been raining, for our walk to our hotel it remained relatively dry. Again, maps is challenging me and it took a couple of goes to feel comfortable we were heading in the right direction. It did take us off the beaten path a couple of times but overall was pretty accurate.

We are staying at the Pension Homeland, which is a Hotel, Restaurant, Bar and Brewery. The building used to be a former Royal Navy officer’s residence. The building was constructed in 1964 and is quite retro and funky and is very centrally located. There are some lovely parklands adjacent to the hotel and it faces the water and there are many museums nearby as well as canals and waterways.

We thought we would head straight to the hotel, about a 2km walk and if our rooms weren’t ready we would have lunch in their restaurant- rooms were ready - so we did a quick unpack and then headed down for a late lunch. Food and wine was excellent and I even had room to try a piece of the famous Dutch Apple Tart - it was great but huge - so Brigitte helped with finishing it.

As the weather has come in quite wet and windy we decided to have some down time and just meet for a light dinner this evening.

  • Discovering Amsterdam

    8. marraskuuta 2022, Alankomaat ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Today the weather is supposed to be dry all day with a fair amount of sun. So we decided we would spend the day seeing some of the sites of the city and just wandering at our own pace. We started a bit later today as Brigitte is fighting off a bit of a cold.

As we were having our breakfast we were entertained by a couple taking a plunge in the freezing water and then taking a sauna. We then noticed a number of other people taking a dip in the freezing water, swimming about for a while but no sauna.

We headed off to the city centre on a self guided tour to check out the sites and just meandered around the streets, discovering picturesque little canals, old houses and interesting architecture and stores. It was nice to have a vague plan but one we could reroute if something took our fancy.

I had spied a lot of “coffee shops” and places to buy hash but resisted all temptation. I saw a lovely cafe off the beaten track that looked like it was popular with the locals so we went there for lunch and we weren’t disappointed. The owner was lovely (quite handsome and I think Brigitte took a bit of a fancy to him! ) The staff were all great and the food, wine and coffee delicious. We spent a couple of hours there recharging our batteries. After lunch we headed to the Bloemenmark to check out all the beautiful flowers. The biggest seller at the moment were tulip bulbs - I haven’t seen so many in such quantities, colours and types and very reasonably priced. Brigitte was able to purchase 50 bulbs for 15 Euros.

We also visited Rembrandt square, Munt Plein, a square in the middle of Amsterdam, which in fact is the widest bridge in Amsterdam. We also walked past the royal palace, which was very heavily guarded as there was some type of function or reception about to start. We also went to the Dam and visited a couple of stunning covered passageways. We of course saw many canals as they are everywhere and hard to miss and we walked through some upmarket shopping districts.

What surprised us as we walked around the city was the unruliness of the bike riders, of which there are many. No-one stops for pedestrians and the cyclists ride so fast, don’t wear helmets, hardly ring bells to warn they are approaching, don’t follow traffic signals ( we saw several cut off trams, busses and cars without hesitating), ride on the few footpaths that exist and ride so very fast. I was to be advised later that bicyclists are the top of the food chain in Amsterdam, followed by trams and busses, the vans and cars and last are pedestrians.

After a full day of hitting the pavement and clocking up over 15,000 steps we headed back to our hotel to have dinner. It was on this evening that I met Rufus, the hotel manager’s whippet who was an absolute delight.

The staff were very nice and accommodating and they made our stay there very enjoyable. There was a resident cat called Amy and the hotel manager’s dog Rufus was also a regular. Plus being Europe people can also bring their pets to the restaurant, bar or in fact have them in their room. Such a different approach to animals here.

The hotel was very funky with lovely little spots to sit and enjoy the surrounds. The hotel also has the slowest lift. So now I have been to a hotel with the smallest lift Petite Madeleine in Paris and Homeland takes the prize for the slowest.

  • Straat Museum

    9. marraskuuta 2022, Alankomaat ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

Today the weather forecast isn’t so great so we thought we would visit a couple of museums. Top of my list was the Straat Museum, which is the Museum for Graffiti and Street Art. The Straat has been awarded Best Museum in the Netherlands at the Tiqets Remarkable Venue Awards, an amazing accomplishment for an establishment that has only been open for 26 weeks. Now that I have been there I can confirm it definitely deserves the recognition. The Straat is one of the best Art Museums I have ever been too.

We caught the tram into Amsterdam Centraal, from here we were told we could catch a free ferry to the museum. We found the area where the ferries departed from and thought we were catching the right one, but unfortunately Dutch communication and directions, particularly on public transport isn’t great. So the ferry we initially caught, took us across the body of water but not to our intended destination. So we caught the ferry back across to where we had started and then after some further investigating and asking some people we found the correct location to catch the ferry. We had a 25 minute journey to Noord 1, which was a little chilly but pleasant enough.

The collection is housed in an old industrial building with 26 metre high ceilings and comprises both well known, established artists and emerging artists. The range of works on display is quite broad and many of the pieces really do cause quite an emotional response.

It is a wonderful space to wander through and return to favourite pieces or see them from another position. You can actually also view the entire space from several viewing platforms. I found that I missed a couple of pieces as I wandered around and returned to some favourites.

There is also some great information on the development of graffiti and street art over the years as well as the ethos of the community. Cornbread did some tagging in the 1960’s along with Cool Earl in Philadelphia that really marks the birth of graffiti movement, followed in 1968 by students protesting from the Sorbonne University in Paris and New York’s Columbia University. They are the first to adopt the visual language of graffiti for their slogans. Then in 1969 an article in Urban Review by Herbert Kohl, titled “Names, Graffiti and Culture” is the first scientific article about the graffiti movement.

During the 1980’s there is the rise of the pixaçāo movement in Sāo Paulo, The Berlin Wall becomes a popular painting spot for both national and international street artists, including Thierry Noir and Keith Haring. Next Blek Le Rat hits the streets of Paris with his stencils and an article appears in the Washington Post by Joyce Wadler titled “Graffiti: learn to appreciate it”.

In the 1990’s KAWS starts subvertising billboards, bus shelters and phone booths. The Israeli West Bank barrier becomes a popular hall of fame for many street artists, among them Banksy. In 2001 Banksy’s first book, Banging your head against a brick wall was published. In 2002 Banksy starts his popular series of stencils titled ‘Girl with Balloon. In 2008 the Tate Modern hosts the exhibition “Street Art”. Street artist BLU erases his own murals in protest of the exhibition and to speak out against gentrification in the district of Berlin-Kreuzburg. In the 2020’s the US Appeal Courts affirms the rights of a group of graffiti artists whose works on the ‘5Points’ building were destroyed in 2013 without warning or consent.
