      Unser letzter Tag in Seattle versprach, nochmal regnerisch zu werden. So richtig viel Lust auf Outdooraktivitäten hatten wir also nicht. Wir sind daher erst noch einmal einkaufen gewesen – ein bisschen Proviant für den Rückflug. Gegen Mittag sind wir dann in die Seattle Public Library gefahren um ein bisschen zu stöbern und in Ruhe unseren Blog zu aktualisieren.

      Am Abend haben wir uns dann noch das Duell der Vizepräsidenten im Fernsehen angeschaut. So ganz am Wahlkampf vorbei kommen wir eben momentan auch nicht.      En savoir plus

      Downtown Seattle

      Leaving quiet Fremont behind we headed into Downtown Seattle and back across to the airport to check into our pre-Trek America tour hotel. Catching a bus into Downtown we then walked along 3rd Avenue to get the Link Light Rail to the airport. We were again greeted by people who were very willing to help us find our way around, our large backpacks giving us away as strangers in possible need of direction. After checking in and leaving our mammoth bags behind, we went back into Downtown.

      We went to Pike Place Market where fishermen's catch from the Pacific Coast is displayed and sold to locals and tourists alike. A steady stream of people pass stalls of giant fish, crabs and lobsters along with fruits, flowers and art. Outside, the docks and piers lean into the bay, where ferries carry commuters to the suburbs and tankers bring in goods to be unloaded by the dock's cranes. Seattle's Giant Wheel (ferris wheel) stands temporarily vacant whilst the seawall is renovated. People sit out on the grass under the gaze of totems and the odour of cannabis drifts through the islands of friends and families.

      We left the busy waterfront and walked along the avenues to the Seattle Centre. Originally built for the 1962 World Fair it is educational playground for the city and home to the landmark Space Needle and a collection of science and art exhibits. The line for the Space Needle was prohibitive enough for us to choose to walk back to the waterfront than spend hours in a queue.

      Back at Pike Place Market we got dinner from Piroshky Piroshky, a Russian bakery that has been at the market since 1922. We ordered the trademark salmon pate piroshky, which is shaped like a fish and delicious, before wandering back through artisan shops and street musicians.

      We got back to the hotel to ready ourselves for the start of our Trek America tour across the West of the U.S. that starts at 7:30am tomorrow. We also managed to meet a few of our Trek companions in the bar for a beer. However due to collective jet lag/general travel fatigue we were all in bed by 9:30pm!      En savoir plus

      Seattle part 3

      Der Tag begann um 4.00h und Frühstück hatten wir um 5.30h, denn der frühe Vogel hat den Jetlag! Für unsere Tour nach downtown war das aber perfekt, schließlich ist heute Samstag und Temperaturen bis 30 Grad sind angesagt. Also, auf zum Pike Place Market, bevor alle anderen aufstehen. Es war noch total leer dort, als wir ankamen. Die Morgensonne schien durch die alten Glasscheiben, die Stände wurden gerade erst aufgebaut und all das Seafood ausgeladen. Riesige Lachse und Krabben türmten sich imposant auf Eisbergen. Markthallen haben ja immer ihre ganz besondere Atmosphäre, herrlich! Wir haben alles bestaunt, Bagels probiert, das goldene Schwein mit Münzen gefüttert, Picknick für den Nachmittag gekauft und dann noch einmal im Laufschritt eine extra Runde gedreht, um nach meiner Sonnenbrille zu suchen, die dann am Ende doch im Auto war. Gut an dieser zweiten Runde war allerdings feststellen zu können, dass es um 9.00h schlagartig voll wurde.En savoir plus

      Pike Place Market

      Is it the brilliant flowers, the original Starbucks, the masses of people or the huge salmon being thrown around by buff young guys? Yes, it’s all of these things and much much more.

      Sheree is great at choosing well when planning and she chose a hotel between the market and Seattle’s famed Sky Needle. First we rose 40 floors to get a 360 view of Seattle. Sadly the clouds limited the views but this city reminds me somewhat of Sydney for its harbour, waters and treed suburbs.

      Then the market called. Immediately upon arrival we were absorbed by the colours, the smells, the sounds, the diversity of people. The energy in this place is magnetic.

      We paused in an urban garden overlooking the bay for a moment and were amazed at the community spirit here as well.

      There is rule in this place - all marketeers are to be the creators of their craft. Be it painting, sculpture, glass, leather or T-shirt, the originality holds the freshness and ownership well.

      With cruise ships now beginning to arrive and a reputation spanning decades Pike Place Market continues to draw the crowds with its mystique and magic.

      Downtown Seattle

      Der Tag startet mit einem ausgiebigen Frühstück in einem typisch amerikanischen Diner. Da in den USA (wie auch in Kanada) die Kalorien pro Speise angegebenen werden, wissen wir, dass wir uns hinterher für den Tag noch eine Scheibe trockenes Brot gönnen dürfen. Dafür ist es sehr umfangreich mit einer Mischung aus Herzhaftem und Pancakes. Yummy!

      Gut gesättigt nehmen wir den Bus nach Seattle. Einige Fans der Toronto Blue Jays fahren die gleiche Strecke, da heute ein Baseballspiel gegen die Seattle Mariners stattfindet. Wir entscheiden uns gegen einen Besuch, da wir uns ohnehin Tickets kaufen würden, von denen aus wir das Spiel wohl nur noch mit einem Fernglas beobachten könnten. Dann doch lieber in eine Bar setzen, da kann man sein Geld wenigstens "sinnvoll" investieren. 😉

      Wir laufen also ein wenig durch die Stadt und entdecken insbesondere den Pike Place Market für uns. Es gibt jede Menge Köstlichkeiten und den allerersten Starbucks-Laden. Die Schlangen sind aber zum Teil abschreckend lang und reichen zig Meter über die Bürgersteige. Daher entscheiden wir uns für einen Ginger Beer Laden, wo man innerhalb weniger Minuten ein leckeres und erfrischendes Getränk bekommt. Genau das Richtige bei der Hitze. In der Nähe sehen wir auch den Gum Wall, der genau das ist: eine Wand voller Kaugummis in allen Farben (und manchmal auch Formen), die mit der Zeit wohl zu einer Sehenswürdigkeit geworden ist. Auch sehen wir uns natürlich das Wahrzeichen der Stadt, die Space Needle an, allerdings nur von außen. Später schauen wir dann tatsächlich ein wenig Baseball in einer Bar und müssen feststellen, dass uns das Spiel trotz Internetrecherche noch nicht so richtig verständlich ist.

      Die Stadt gefällt uns insgesamt sehr gut, da sie trotz der Größe eine einladende Atmosphäre bietet, was nicht zuletzt den unzähligen Food Courts und Market Places zu verdanken ist. Wie auch schon häufiger in Kanada bekommt man jedoch den Gras-Geruch nur selten aus der Nase (ist legal), sodass die ein oder andere 'Drug Free Zone' eine willkommene Abwechslung war.       Dit is al de laatste plaats die ik samen met Douwe bezoek, voordat hij naar huis gaat 😞 We hebben een toptijd gehad de afgelopen weken!

      Pike place market in Seattle was erg leuk om te zien. En ontzettend toeristisch 😄 Dat is waar de visboeren de vis over de toonbanken gooien en ook waar de 1e Starbucks zit. Hoewel ze (volgens mij) geen andere dingen verkopen dan het filiaal om de hoek, stond er toch een megalange rij voor 'the original'.

      We hebben ook genoten van live muziek in een pub, van snuffelen in een antiekzaak en van het uitzicht vanuit het hoogste gebouw. En toevallig was er weer gay parade, die we een paar dagen terug ook al in Portland hebben gezien. Toch maar weer even kijken--vooral naar alle kleurrijke outfits die voorbij komen 😎🌈      En savoir plus

      Not sleepless but very tired in Seattle

      Den heutigen Vormittag verbrachten wir noch ganz entspannt in Vancouver. Zuerst stand eine Runde Erkundung des Stanley Parks auf dem Programm. Das wirklich schöne Naherholungsgebiet, der „Vancouverianer“. Etwas ähnlich unserer Donauinsel. Viele Möglichkeiten Sport zu betreiben, viele Radwege, aber auch naturbelassener Wald. Das alles mit dem Meer auf allen Seiten und der Skyline von Vancouver im Hintergrund! Die Eindrücke, die wir sammeln konnten, lassen einen gut nachvollziehen, warum Vancouver auch immer weit vorne ist im Ranking der lebenswertesten Städte weltweit!

      Derselbe Eindruck blieb auch nach dem Besuch des Stadtteils Granville / Granville Island. Einst ein Industrieviertel, ist es nun ein buntes und lebendiges Viertel, zum Flanieren, Essen gehen und Einkaufen.

      Am frühen Nachmittag verließen wir dann Vancouver und damit auch Kanada und machten uns auf den Weg nach Seattle. Die erste kleine Hürde, nämlich die Einreise in die Vereinigten Staaten nahmen wir ganz problemlos. Die Grenzbeamten schienen wesentlich freundlicher als man es vom Flughafen her kennt. Auch die Fahrt am Freeway 99 war mit Countrymusik noch sehr idyllisch. Dann aber kam unser erster Stau🙈Unser Navi, schickte uns, um den Stau zu umfahren und zum Flughafen zu gelangen, mitten durch Seattle und das obwohl dort anscheinend gerade SEHR viel gebaut wird... Ziel war der Flughafen von Seattle um das Auto aus Kanada zu retournieren und ein Anderes zu übernehmen, das wir bis Los Angeles behalten und auch dort zurückgeben können.
      Was soll ich sagen - der Fahrer war tapfer, und die Mitreisenden auch. Irgendwann kamen wir doch tatsächlich dort an und um ca. 20:00 waren wir dann in unserem Motel im Univiertel von Seattle angekommen.

      Kurz vor dem Verhungern, zögerten wir nicht lange und gingen auf Empfehlung des Motel Besitzers ins nebenan gelegene „Sezuchan Hot Pot“ Restaurant. Nichtsahnend auf was wir uns da eingelassen hatten, standen wir vor einem Tisch mit einer Kochplatte in der Mitte. Die Kellnerin erklärte uns in recht wenigen Worten, dass man eine Suppe wählen müsse und Zutaten, die man dann selber in dieser Suppe kocht. Etwas planlos stellten wir uns der Herausforderung und ich muss sagen, es war nicht nur wahnsinnig lustig sondern auch ausgezeichnet. Im Prinzip Chinesisches Fondue 🤣

      So nun geht ein langer und ereignisreicher Tag zu Ende. Morgen steht Seattle Sightseeing am Programm!      En savoir plus

      Depuis la petite ville de Southworth, on prend un ferry avec Karlos jusqu'à Fauntleroy au sud de Seattle. En attendant le départ du ferry, on discute avec un homme qui reconnaît notre plaque Québécoise, un américain qui nous raconte sa vie et des anecdotes sur la région. Une fois de l'autre côté, on roule jusque dans la ville et on trouve une place gratuite non loin du centre, après un peu d'attente qu'une se libère. On marche jusqu'aux sphères de verre d'Amazon que l'on ne peut admirer que de l'extérieur. On rentre dans plusieurs boutiques d'équipements de randonnée et Grégoire s'achète une veste. Après deux mois à piquer celle de Julien, il a enfin la sienne. Malgré la tentation, Julien résiste à l'achat. On traverse Downtown puis on redescend vers les quais. Les buildings sont plus étonnants les uns que les autres par leur architecture. On marche le long du port très touristique et similaire à ce qu'on a pu voir à San Francisco, avec ses nombreux pontons aménagés de boutiques, restaurants et d'une grande roue. On remonte de grands escaliers jusqu'au Gum Wall, une rue recouverte de... chewing-gums ! Et on arpente le marché animé Pike Place Market où on assiste à un show de poissonniers. Puis on s'arrête pour regarder un voilier naviguer sous le soleil dans la baie. On marche dans le Seattle center, à travers un parc dans lequel il y a nombreuses sculptures colorées ainsi qu'une énorme fontaine. On passe au pied de la Space Needle, icône de la ville au bas de laquelle on s'étonne de voir un service de voituriers. De retour au van en fin de journée, on ressort de la ville et rapidement on se retrouve à nouveau en pleine nature et entouré de montagnes. On s'aventure sur un sentier plein de trous mais jusqu'à un endroit calme dans la forêt pour se poser pour la nuit.En savoir plus

      Day 16 - Overcast in Seattle

      I'm sure I've been going on about how great the weather has been. Oh, is that you karma? Today we have been introduced to the famous North Western Pacific rain. The last few days Alice and I have been visiting the very finest tat shops, laughing to ourselves at all the fridge magnets, postcards and badges referring to the rain. Luckily, it's a driving day, and so it's basically felt like any other day in London with the added authenticity of traffic as we approached Seattle. It was also about this time that we hit the 2000 mile mark of the road trip.

      A few words on Portland. Alice and I had high expectations for Portland and we're glad to say that the city has risen to the occasion. We both loved everything the city had to offer (minus bar basements) and the feel of the place in general. The west coast and in particular the north west continues to grow on us.

      Seattle was next. The home of the grunge music scene of the 90s and modern coffee drinking as we know it. Alice insisted we listen to Nirvana and Pearl Jam on the way in and so we felt reasonably fed up with our existence and the point of it all as we arrived. We needed coffee. So, for a self confessed caffeine fiend, the very first Starbucks is a modern mecca. And we weren't the only one's to visit 1912 Pike Place. The old signage, limited edition merchandise and even exclusive brews of coffee ensured that the queue to enter was the longest we would ever contemplate tolerating. Once we made it in I grabbed a limited edition enamel mug (yeah I know) and two cups of the 'pike place' blend coffee. It was actually very nice and Alice enjoyed it too.

      The sun had decided to break through by now and so that rain we witnessed on the way to Seattle had the decency to hold back whilst we shopped. As the evening approached it was dinner time and we had intended to just go for a drink at the Pike Brewery but we saw the menu and thought we'd go for food too. It's another all American dining experience and the food, mussels for me and fish tacos for Alice, was very good. We moved to the bar area and continued to drink, trying the Pike Brewery sampler of six of their finest. Another city another brewery sampled. Although just six drinks, we both thought that all but the stout were winners.

      We have a whole day in this city tomorrow and neither of us can wait.
