      Manhattan - Central Park

      Neuer Tag neuer Rekord. Auch an diesem Tag ging’s knapp 30km durch Manhattan.

      Nach dem Frühstück sind wir zunächst gemütlich am Pier entlang bis zum Chelsea Viertel spaziert. Von dort ging’s dann über die Highline, eine alte stillgelegte und zur Parkanlage umfunktionierte Hochbahnstrecke. Nach einem kurzen Abstecher zu den Hudson Yards sind wir bis hoch zum Central Park gelaufen. Der Park ist bei unserem letzten Besuch leider zu kurz gekommen, deshalb haben wir uns diesmal extra viel Zeit genommen und sind etwa 2/3 des riesigen Parks durchgelaufen. Auch wenn’s auf der Karte alles so klein aussieht, machte sich die riesige Strecke und auch die letzten Tage langsam richtig bemerkbar. Also ging’s erst mal Richtung Hotel für eine kurze Pause.

      Etwas erholt und hungrig ging’s dann zu SMASHED Burger für den ersten Burger des Trips. Mega lecker! Im Anschluss ging’s dann zum Edge. Das Gebäude mit der dreieckigen Aussichtsplattform über ganz New York gab es beim letzten Mal noch nicht, und da wir auf dem Rockefeller schon waren wollten wir dieses Mal was neues ausprobieren. Und wir wurden nicht enttäuscht. Der Ausblick war einfach Wahnsinn.

      Sichtlich erschöpft sind wir dann noch zur 6th Avenue gefahren und haben uns den Anfang der legendären alljährlichen Halloween Parade angesehen, bevor wir total KO ins Bett gefallen sind.

      Chelsea Market, Highline,Staten Island

      Heute erlebten wir erneut einen äußerst aufregenden Tag! Unser Tag begann in einem beeindruckenden Starbucks - dem Starbucks Reserve. Dort gab es eine Vielzahl von Desserts, Croissants und außergewöhnlichen Kaffeesorten. Das kulinarische Erlebnis war ebenso faszinierend wie das Ambiente.☕️

      Nach unserem Kaffeeabenteuer besuchten wir den Chelsea Market. Dieses riesige Gebäude beherbergt unzählige verschiedene Geschäfte und Restaurants. Dort probierten wir ein köstliches Brisket Sandwich, das zum Glück geteilt wurde :).🍔

      Anschließend machten wir uns auf den Weg zur Highline, einem öffentlich zugänglichen Dachgarten, der einst eine Eisenbahnstrecke war. Die verlassenen Gleise verleihen diesem Ort eine besondere Atmosphäre.🪴

      Nach einem entspannten Spaziergang fuhren wir mit dem Schiff in Richtung Staten Island. Unterwegs konnten wir die Freiheitsstatue bewundern. In Staten Island unternahmen wir schließlich einige ausgiebige Einkäufe.🚢🗽

      Jetzt geht es zurück zu unserer Airbnb-Unterkunft. Morgen steht unser letzter voller Tag in New York bevor, daher müssen wir ausgeruht sein!🥱      Read more

      New York Whitney Museum

      Das Gebäude wirkt wie eine kubistische Konservendose mit Tumoren, aber das in bester Lage am Ufer des Hudson River. Der stahlhäutige Koloss befindet sich am südlichen Eingang zur beliebten Flaniermeile der High Line und in unmittelbarer Nähe des Galerienviertels Chelsea. An Fussvolk wird es nicht fehlen. Über neun asymmetrische Stockwerke und transparente Treppenschächte sind vier Terrassen verteilt. Man betritt das Museum durch eine aquariumartige Lobby. Von Richard Artschwager gestaltete Aufzüge sind dauerüberlastet. Denn es locken neben 5.800 Quadratmetern prall gefüllter Ausstellungsfläche eine Bibliothek, ein Saal mit 175 Plätzen für Kino, Theater und andere Darbietungen sowie ein Café und ein Restaurant, das freilich bereits auf Wochen hin ausgebucht ist.Read more

      High Line Park

      Schließlich sind wir beim High Line Park angekommen. Hier wurde eine ursprüngliche Bahnverbindung zum Fleischtransport zu einem Park ausgebaut, der sich in etwa 15 Metern Höhe durch die Häuser der Stadt schlängelt. (Ich kann gerade nicht googlen, es könnten auch 20 oder 5 oder 100 sein, ich bin sehr schlecht im Schätzen von Entfernungen.) Hier und da gab es einen schönen Ausblick und alles wurde hübsch angelegt. Wir konnten der Sache im Großen und Ganzen allerdings nicht so wahnsinnig viel abgewinnen, was vermutlich auch daran lag, dass es absolut überfüllt war und man in einer zähen Masse den Weg entlanggedrängt wurde. Gnade dir Gott, wenn du mal ein Foto machen wolltest!
      Kurz vor Ende haben wir deshalb den "Pfad" schon verlassen, mit dem Ziel "Burger Joint" vor Augen. Langsam kam auch ziemlicher Hunger auf.      Read more

      Spaziergang durch NYC

      Nachdem wir einen tollen Ausblick vom „The Vessel“ genossen haben, haben wir einen langen Spaziergang über die Highline von New York gemacht, weiter entlang des Hudson River, über die Brooklyn Bridge zum Abendessen mit Daniel, ein entfernter Verwandter.
      Wir haben uns im Hights Café getroffen in Brooklyn Hights. Eine wirklich tolle und Sehenswerte Nachbarschaft. Es gibt viele Kleine Cafés, Restaurants und Läden.
      Das Wetter hat mit gespielt. 2. Oktober und 30 Grad. Mit so viel Sonne und Wärme hätten wir gar nicht mehr gerechnet.      Read more

      New York, High Line

      Die High Line ist eine 2,6 Kilometer lange und 7,5 Meter über dem Boden liegende, nicht mehr als solche genutzte Güterzugtrasse im Westen von Manhattan, die von 2006 bis 2023 zu einer Parkanlage, dem High Line Park, umgebaut wurde. Sie führt durch die Stadtteile Meatpacking District und Chelsea.
      Der Verkehr der Güterzüge der West Side Line auf einer Straße führte zu zahlreichen Unfällen mit Fußgängern und Fahrzeugen, was der 10th Avenue den Namen der Death Avenue einbrachte. Die New York Central Railroad, die Stadt und der Staat New York einigten sich deshalb 1929 im Rahmen eines Stadterneuerungsprogramms darauf, die Strecke durch eine Hochbahnstraße – die heute so genannte High Line – zu ersetzen. LKWs ersetzten aber einige Jahrzehnte später die Bahn. Der letzte Zug auf der High Line verkehrte im Herbst 1980 und war mit gefrorenen Truthähnen beladen. Der grösste Teil wurde danach abgerissen, eine Bürgerinitiative setzte sich für den Erhalt des bestehenden Abschnittes ein und hatte Erfolg.

      The High Line is a 1.6-mile (2.6 km) long, 25-foot (7.5 m) above ground disused freight line in west Manhattan that was converted into a park area, the High Line Park, from 2006 to 2023. It runs through the Meatpacking District and Chelsea.
      The traffic of West Side Line freight trains on a street resulted in numerous accidents involving pedestrians and vehicles, earning 10th Avenue the nickname of Death Avenue. The New York Central Railroad, the city and the state of New York therefore agreed in 1929 as part of an urban renewal program to replace the route with an elevated railway road - today known as the High Line. However, trucks replaced the railways only a few decades later. The last train on the High Line ran in the fall of 1980 and was loaded with frozen turkeys. The largest part was then demolished, a citizens' initiative campaigned for the preservation of the existing section and was successful.      Read more

      Highline, Friends, Washington Park

      Tālākais ceļš ved uz hipsterīgo Chelsea rajonu pa īpaši hipsterīgo Highline taku. Tā ir vecu dzelzceļa sliežu vietā izveidota taka, kas ved no Hudson Yards līdz pat Chelsea tirgum apmēram trešā stāva augstumā virs Ņujorkas ielām. Tas paver skatus uz pilsētu interesantos un savādākos leņķos.
      Salasījos iepriekš interesantas atsauksmes par Chelsea tirgu, kur visādus gardumus varot sapirkties, bet diemžēl šobrīd ir ciet. Atvērsies pēc pusotras stundas, saldumu dēļ laikam negaidīsim.
      Izejot cauri Chelsea un SoHo rajoniem nonākam pie ķeksīšfoto iespējas - pie Friends mājas, kur dzīvoja daļa no slavenā seriāla varoņiem. Tā gan ir tikai fasāde, kas izmantota seriālā, jo lielākā daļa materiāls uzfilmēts Losandželosā studijās. Bet tāpat interesanti.
      Vēdera nepilnīgais sastāvs liek par sevi manīt, tāpēc sākam raudzīties kiosku virzienā. Izvēle krīt uz picu. Grūti kļūdīties. Pa 20usd katrs tiekam pie lielas šķēles Margarita vai Funghi. Ejam notiesāt uz netālo Washington Square parku. Šeit vienreiz jau gājām cauri. Parks smuks, Piektās avēnijas sākums.
      Tālāk pa 5to Avēniju iesim uz Ņujorkas pilsētas publisko bibliotēku. Pa ceļam ieejam vēlreiz Hooka botu veikalā, bet bez taustāma rezultāta pagaidām.
      Otrs pit-stops pa ceļam pie Flatiron ēkas, kur piesēžam uz gelato. Laikam izskatījos neuzticams, jo pārdevēja uzstāja, ka jāmaksā ar karti un pirms saldējuma ielikšanas. Vismaz saldējumi garšīgi. Man citrons, mammai pistācija, Madarai zemene un tētim klasika - šokolāde.      Read more

      The High Line

      Die High Line ist eine 2,33 Kilometer lange und 7,5 Meter über dem Boden liegende, nicht mehr als solche genutzte Güterzugtrasse, die von 2006 bis 2019 zu einer Parkanlage, dem High Line Park, umgebaut wurde. Es macht richtig Spaß darauf herumzuspazieren und sich die Straßenzüge und New Yorker Streetart anzusehen. Beeindruckt sind wir von der Vorbereitung der Männls: akribische Urlaubs-Planung, die sogar Peter als aussehen lässt 😜. Auf dem letzten Bild ist das „Vessel“ zu sehen, welches 2021 für die Öffentlichkeit geschlossen wurde, weil sich mehrere Personen in den Tod gestürzt haben. Bis heute wurde es nicht wieder geöffnet.Read more

      Touchdown in New York JFK at 14:15 bang on time! We soon cleared US customs with the custom chap actually giving us a smile, which is quite unusual.

      A fairly long queue and we were whizzing our way into Manhattan to the Standard High Line Hotel in the Greenwich area of the city. Many thanks to my good mate Bruce Robertson for sorting this out for us. Bruce is the man who knows all the best hotels and locations - a real gent even if he is Scottish...cheers Bruce...even a room upgrade with views of the Hudson River.

      We then decided to shoot over to Soho House New York which is a members club I have joined in the UK but with worldwide membership. Here, much to Eva's dismay we found out that to partake of any alcoholic drink she had to be 21 years of age!

      Oh well the detox will do her good after her week away last week clubbing in Crete with her mates...how the other half live.

      A couple of beers and some iced water we moved on to grab a bite to eat and ended up over the road from the hotel at Sugar Factory. We only went in there because people were queuing to get in...apparently the rich and famous and now Eva go there. It is supposed to be the most Instagramed restaurant in the US...whatever that is.

      It seems to us that the only reason for it was that you can order these massive cocktails with dry ice in them and Haribo sweets...I can't see it lasting long myself. A couple of non alcoholic cocktails and we headed off to the German Beer Keller which consisted of some very drunk ladies who looked like they had just been dumped and people playing ping pong.

      Iced water was forthcoming for Eva who was buy now getting the hang of it.

      After so much excitement we called it a night and headed off to our rooms with me looking forward to ur shopping expedition the next day. drink she had to be 21 years of age!

      Day 19

      Eva where are you?

      Last night the last thing Eva said to me was not to wake her up early.

      So I didn't. I had woken up at 03:00 and did a few phone calls to the UK and of course the usual emails. So I was kicking my heels early on after dozing off again and went for breakfast early. A few more calls over breakfast and the Apple Store was open two blocks away.

      As fate would have it we had been to the Apple Store on our earlier arrival to change the iPad. When I was there I looked at the new iPhone 7 plus as I just simply need a bigger screen the way my eyesight is heading. So I needed to buy Eva an iPhone following my swim in Heaven night club so she may as well have my 4 week old iPhone 6 and I get the bigger one. That is two iPhones now that I have fallen in water with during the past 6 months. I wish they would make a waterproof one.

      It took a while to sort it out but as usual the service at Apple was top notch.

      Oh well I may as well walk another block to Soho House and collect my new membership card that had arrived. The waiter had given my card to somebody else our last gist over two weeks ago. so I sat on the roof terrace by the pool with all the lovelies doing some work. Still no news from Eva, no texts or messenger messages....perhaps there was something wrong. So I sent a few messages to her over the next hour. Still no response. Perhaps there was something wrong? She was grumpy and tired last night I hope she is ok?

      I returned the hotel and range her room.

      'Dad where the f&?@ have you been?'

      'I have been messengering (if that is a word) you for ages?'

      'Dad you idiot I don't have a phone...remember.'

      'Ah yes...that is why I went to Apple to get you one'

      I laughed, she didn't. She had been up since 09:30 and knocked on my door three times getting rather concerned that I might have croaked it during the night. So she had been hanging around for 5 hours.

      Oh well at least she now had a new iPhone which I promptly set up and she was back in the civilised world.

      I rang the helicopter tour company and we could get on the next flight which was in 30 minutes time from near the Statten Island ferry terminal. We made it just in time and did the 15 minute flight to the Statue of Liberty, up the Hudson and back again to the heliport for the bargain basement price of $450...blimey! Still, it was worth doing it for Eva's New York visit.

      Unfortunately on the way to the 9/11 memorial pools we walked past a a few shops that just had to go in. Do these clothes shops put something in the ac units to make men go to sleep and loose the will to live? So that cost me too and of course her sister just had to have something even though she wasn't on the holiday.

      As Eva hadn't eaten all day we headed back to the hotel to get refreshed for going out.

      My clothes had arrived from Mexico so I now had my long trousers my T-shirts and a small plastic bag containing some women's knickers. All I can say is that I have no idea where they came from. That is my story and I am sticking to it.

      We left the hotel to the beer Keller next door for Eva to have a glass of water and then it was off to Fat Chick a couple of blocks away for Southern Fried Chicken.

      I said goodbye to Eva in the hotel elevator. She was in the 8th and I was on the 12th. I was a bit waylaid and went to check out the 18th floor where the club was located with views over to New Jersey and Manhattan. It was very nice but I decided to as always act my age and retired to bed.      Read more
