    11. Tag (Fr.): Kanab -> Zion NP

July 27 in the United States

June 13, 2017 in the United States

Iron, Like a Lion, In Zion

October 7, 2016 in the United States

We left Vegas feeling slightly worse for wear and unfortunately so did Elvis :( With all the mountains we'd worn out the front brake pads, and metal on metal hadn't done one of the rotors any favours. We lucked out and found a great garage on route who squeezed us in that day & we settled for the night at a beautiful spot called Quails Creek State Park.

We were excited to be heading going to Zion National Park, although slightly disappointed we couldn't get into the park campsites so we ended up in a commercial campsite just outside, and spent the rest of the day lazing around the pool (again!). Even when we arrived by 7:50am on the 2nd morning we couldn't get into the public campsite so we decided to wing it.

With the early start we were able to tackle the Angel's Landing - this is an infamous trail with 21 switchbacks followed by a ridge a couple of metres wide with 1000m drops both sides. I wasn't sure if I 'd be able to do it after not doing the Half Dome cables, but I did it & really enjoyed it - the views at the top were truly spectacular.

In the afternoon we went up the Narrows trail & it immediately became apparent why most people had hired neoprene socks & sturdy boots - it was bloody freezing! I made it some way up before bailing but Phil waited for his feet to go numb and made it to the very narrow part of the canyon, where buckled walls rise a hundred metres to the surface.

As we had no camp site we had to drive on through the park, and its incredible mile long tunnel through the sandstone but we found a great BLM spot as the sun settled down for the night.

    Zion National Park

September 1, 2017 in the United States

Read more

    Hike cheating

July 31, 2017 in the United States

One of the most iconic views of Zion is from Angel's Landing - a strenuous 6 hour hike. With 30° or higher that was never an option. However, on the way out to Bryce the road climbed up the valley wall & at the top was a hike claiming canyon views & only to be moderately challenging. The only catch was the lack of parking. An early start should do the trick. Run & brekkie done. Just the small matter of fuel - is the hire car petrol or diesel? Nowhere in the documentation was there an indication. Had to rely on the sound of the engine... Thankfully at the car park, there was 1 space but had to turn round to get it - facing the wrong direction - could be a problem. Start of the path was a hefty flight of steps - Liz looked none too pleased. A fair bit of shade & fairly flat for the remainder helped. The view at the end sealed the deal. Very impressive. Bad selfies aside - you couldn't fail to take a bad photo of this. The limited parking ensured limited numbers - the family messing around with the echoes didn't ensure quietness - and they never stopped singing on the way down. Got back to the car & as Liz predicted there was a queue to get through the tunnel to Zion & no-one wanted to let me in so I could turn around. Ho hum - eventually a slow bus meant a gap - quick 3 point & off to Bryce.Read more

    Driving into Zion on Rt.9

August 15, 2015 in the United States

This drive in was amazing!!! The road turned brown once we entered Zion National Park and we had to get a special permit to go through the 1.1 mile tunnel. $15, stopped traffic both ways, got to drive through the center of the tunnel, we felt very special.

    Visitor Center, Zion National Park

August 16, 2015 in the United States

The big kids are off hiking Angel's Landing! It's the quintesential Zion hike as you go up 1,488 vertical feet over 5 miles hiking through Walter's Wiggles, a series of switchbacks, and then walk across the "Landing" using chains bolted into the rock to help you climb the steep terrain. There are 1,200 foot drop-offs on either side as you climb! Certainly not for the faint of heart. The best part is the summit where you have 360˚ panoramas from the “Landing,” and landmarks like Big Bend, Cathedral Mountain, and Cable Mountain, as well as the Virgin River and the Great White Throne can be seen. Looking forward to hearing all about it when they return!

Patrick and Sarah explored the campground and nearby river. Found a campervan all the way from Germany!!! See the last picture for proof. Made sure to get Zion rocks in the pic since Patrick still cannot say "Alemania" quite yet. Though he can say "ardilla" (squirrel) quite well! Grampy, does Germany earn more? $5? They did have to bring their vehicle across the Atlantic Ocean!

    A perfect morning in Zion!

    Zion National Park

October 15, 2017 in the United States

Read more
