  • Fort Canning Park

    3 de janeiro de 2022, Cingapura ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

I wander out this morning to Fort Canning Park this site became known as Government Hill as it was where the British raised the Union Jack when they arrived in 1819 and where British governors resided. The hill's summit once housed a flagstaff that guided ships to Singapore's harbour. To guard the growing port, a fort was built on the hill in 1859 The fort was later replaced by a complex of buildings and underground bunkers which served as the nerve centre for British military operations in the Far East during the Second World War. The park is beautiful and an amazing oasis to the hustle and skyscrapers that sit below the canopy of the trees. Some of the signs in the park shock me with they're bluntness but I observe the warnings as I certainly don't want to suffer the consequences. The park houses various areas and the huge government building is now a huge high end hotel. From nowhere the sky turns black and I head back to the hotel to take cover. I walk pretty much everywhere here, and not because the metro is expensive but you see so much more on two feet. Luckily most of the buildings have roof canopies so most of the journey home I stay reasonably dry apart from crossing roads. There is no jay walking allowed here so you have to wait for the green man before you can cross, which sometimes seems to take forever.Leia mais

  • Familiar faces

    2 de janeiro de 2022, Cingapura ⋅ 🌧 24 °C

I wake early and do my daily covid test before making way over to meet up with Charlie who stayed with me as a guest for 3 months during the summer when he couldn't get back to Singapore to see his family. I jump the tube for 40 minutes and Charlie meets me at the metro. They live in a condo apartment with it own pool gym and hot tub in the centre .
We spend the morning catching up before heading a few stops to share lunch with his mum. After lunch we make an effort to try and get Charlie a sim, I can't believe I'm one step ahead of him when he's been here 3 weeks. The shopping malls here are crazy, they stretch over floors and basements , each shop having the number of the floor it's on followed by the number of the shop eg 2.56 so you would think the numbers run in order but that's not necessarily the case and Google maps is no good indoors. I send myself dizzy just trying to find where I am. The difference it makes being with someone I know has really raised my spirits a familiar face makes such a difference. Late afternoon we part company and when I disembark the tube I head to find the LFC shop hoping someone can advise me where I might be able to see the game, but to no avail. I've messaged the lfc supporters singapore club who usually meet at The Marriot Riverside but since covid that's been knocked on the head.
I make an enquiry to Muddy Murphys Irish bar but they advise me that they aren't allowed to show any live TV. I accept the fact I'm going to have to head back to my room to stream it. After realising the game doesn't start for another 2 hours I go down to the foyer for a ciggie and get chatting to a dad and his son who is a liverpool supporter who says it might be on at the pool 🎱 bar round the corner, I laugh and say I'm a hustler and the young lad says he's good 🤣🤣 I beat him 5-3 😉 before heading back for the game let's hope we get the same result 👍

  • Sight-seeing and Shopping

    1 de janeiro de 2022, Cingapura ⋅ 🌧 25 °C

The start of my New Year begins with wandering down to Kampong Glam , its the Arabic quarter of Singapore, together with Little India and Chinatown. I head down to catch the metro at bugis and my metro card won't work yet I topped it up yesterday. When I get to the counter and hand the lady my ticket, she advises me that my room card won't work and I'll have to buy a proper ticket 🙃 I proceed to the barrier putting exchanging my room card for my actual metro card and it works ( well they do look the same ). I arrive in Kampong Glam and am amazed by the quirkiness of the streets. The main building here is the mosque The present building on commissioned in 1924, was designed by Irish architect Denis Santry of Swan and Maclaren in the Indo-Saruernic style, although the original one was built in 1819 when Sir Raffles himself signed a treaty with the British East India company allow them to have a trading post in Singapore.
The streets are adorned with colourful art decorated murals and I love getting lost in the maze of streets, seeing something new as I turn each corner. As I stroll up the next street it's full of bars and restaurants serving everything from Turkish to Egyptian to Arabic. I have a few things on my shopping list to aquire. The shopping malls here are amazing and the Air conditioning is welcoming with wearing a mask in this humidity. I purchase the essentials and also splash out on a pair of shoes that cost me £8 as all I've got is 1 pair of flip-flops and trainers which I don't think will cut it when I go to the Raffles bar for my Singapore Sling tomorrow night 😀

  • Wet wet wet

    31 de dezembro de 2021, Cingapura ⋅ 🌧 28 °C

After a much better night's sleep I wake refreshed and take a bath. I'm in no rush getting out as it's literally raining cats and dogs. I'm armed with waterproof coat and shoes but I don't think they are going to cut it in this. My first appointment today is 45 minutes walk away which I had planned to do but with the rain situation it's better to catch the metro. The metro is very similar here to most Asian countries and once I've bought my card and topped it up I jump on the tube. Your not even allowed to talk on the tube as part of the restrictions and I'm also surprised at how quiet they are.
My arrival at the testing centre goes quite smoothly even though there's a big queue, they are certainly organised. You take yourself to a booth and complete the test and even have a timer to let you know your 15 min wait is up. Negative result and I'm out of there , we'll for the next 4 days anyway. I decide to walk back as the rain is warm and has eased off a little I wander to a place called "little india" and lose myself in the markets and streets before getting back and taking myself out of my sodden clothes.
It's crazy that tonight is New Year Eve and I have no place to go but I take myself to the Raffles shopping centre and treat myself to some marks and sparks goodies but left the bubbly for £80 on the shelf paying £4.50 for percy pigs was bad enough. Anyway here's to 2022 .

  • New years eve

    31 de dezembro de 2021, Cingapura ⋅ 🌧 25 °C

After signing off last night as I lay in bed at 10pm watching wonder woman and had a quiet word with myself. What am I doing it's New year and you need to get yourself out.
I got dressed and headed to the marina. As I walked once again the rain soaked me but its warm and in a way it didn't matter.
Singapore is as beautiful at night as it is during the day. The skyline lit up magnifying the sky scrapers to a new level.
When I reach the marina I am shocked to find how few people are actually here. There are no fireworks this year as they are avoiding fireworks to keep crowds from gathering but I believe there is a light show
It's 11 o'clock when I arrive and it's nice to be among people for this time. Before we know it the countdown begins and we are into 2022. The light show doesn't happen but I'm happy I went and as they start playing old lang syne I become emotional and a kind lady hugs me and wishes me happy new year. I'm so glad I came . Happy New Year x

  • Singapore strictness

    30 de dezembro de 2021, Cingapura ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

After a restless sleep I awake to find I'm free!! My covid test has come back negative and in free to explore the city. I stroll out to try and purchase covid tests as I have to do one every day and a supervised one on day 2 and 7. The first thing I'm aware of is how strict they are here. When you enter any building you have to use the track and trace app and as my Internet isn't working I'm finding this extremely difficult.
After wandering around for nearly an hour I head back towards the hotel as none of the phone shops open till 11am. I chance my luck and go into 7/11 without scanning and spot sim cards for sale together with a stick of Deodorant. The guy in the shop is so helpful and even shares his data so I can set1 it up the sim card. Sim card loaded and off I go thinking things are going to be easier now only to walk nearly a mile and find it doesn't work. I stop and ask a stranger and after 10 minutes of faffing about she manages to sort it(having 2 sim cards in 1 phone isn't easy for an oldie)
I decide I'm just going to wander and just take in the city as I stroll. Wearing the face mask in this humidity is stifling and hard to breathe but I eventually make it to the waterfront. The views are beautiful and I feel gutted that there will be no fireworks this year but it certainly doesn't take away from the amazing waterfront.
I must admit travelling on my own has made me feel very vulnerable and the lack of tourists here makes me stick out like a sore thumb, this morning I had a mini melt down and was booking a flight home but after reassuring from family have realised I need to just settle in. I take the rest of the day easy and head back to the hotel to get a bath and an early night, don't know whether I'm coming or going with the time difference. Tomorrow is another day and once I've been for my pcr test am going to do some sightseeing.

  • Singapore Isolation

    29 de dezembro de 2021, Cingapura ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

After a transit flight to Heathrow I have a 5 hour layover before boarding my plane to Singapore. I spend the time at the airport buying last minute bits not too much though as my bags heavy enough as it is.
When I get to the boarding gate I'm called with a couple of other passengers up to speak with the desk. When I tried to upload all my Singapore documents to the British Airways check in it wasn't allowing me too , but I've just done all this faffing in Manchester so a bit fed up now. The girl on the desk isn't very nice and asks what my purpose of travel is I tell her I'm travelling for a year and she say you're purpose not the length?
I eventually board the plane to find we've got an issue with air traffic control over Europe so we sit on the Tarmac for an hour before taking off. I don't sleep well on planes and spend the time reading and watching films . I go to write my blog and find my book missing and on arriving at the hotel realise I must have left it at Heathrow . As disappointed as I am it's one less thing to carry.
Singapore is hectic and after leaving the plane they escort you through immigration then for your pcr test. After getting this sorted I head to get a taxi. Still no cigarette, feel like I could smoke my own fingers. The plan is I'll jump a taxi to my hotel and have a ciggie before I check in . This doesn't happen, as soon as I arrive the guy says I can't smoke until my results have come back and that could be tomorrow night🤣 I'm then escorted to my room via the tradesman lift and told to not leave under any circumstances
Anyway that's where I sit as I write this going to try and get some shut eye 👁

  • Cactus country

    3 de fevereiro de 2020, México ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

We wake leisurely in the morning and potter around listening to some English music introducing the guys to different bands they've never heard of. We drive to a place called Cataceaus de Queretaro which is believed to be a Sacred area full of magic. There are so many different types ranging from really small to really big ,. Over the years some species have become extinct so this place is working to protect the species remaining. A small building houseas a greenhouse area where cacti are grown from seeds and nurtured till the are strong enough to put in the ground.
Here in Mexico they eat cactus on a daily basis and is a massive part of the staple diet. They taste very similar to green peppers and are cooked similarly too.
The guide explains to us that cactus are used for many things here in Mexico from medicine to food but most importantly Tequila. We take the trek to the Mirador and the views are beautiful

  • Candlemas

    2 de fevereiro de 2020, México ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Today is Candlemas which is the official end of Xmas. During the Christmas festivities a small baby Jesus is baked in a bread and whoever gets the baby hosts the party of Candlemas.
We go for breakfast at a traditional restaurant which consists of taco's and cornbread topped with beans cheese and of course chilli. Diana's mum joins us and then it's back to her house to collect Miguel. We spend the day visiting the beautiful city o Queretaro with lots of architecture the streets adorned with market stalls. The sadness in places like this is the lack of jobs, people live hand to mouth making various artisanal products to sell on the streets. It's much colder than I expected and my suitcase is literally packed with t shirts and little summer dresses. After eating the most delicious Ice cream we drive out of the city following the aquaduct which was built as a labour of love, it literally follows the whole city.
In the evening we head to Diana's uncles house where we celebrate Candlemas , we have singing and dancing and karaoke and every body joins in a really wonderful night with wonderful people. I'm pleased to be able to at least communicate a little with her family but they speak so fast I don't necessarily understand everything but I get by and by midnight we are home and tucked up in bed

  • Retiro to Mexico

    1 de fevereiro de 2020, Espanha ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

I've decided to go to Parque de El Retiro. We have a few hours to spare before we head to the airport. The park is filled with stunning architectural monuments and statues. Struggling to find a coffee bar we eventually stumble across one . The lady wasn't open but said the coffee machine would be five minutes before it was ready so we waited while watching the local college practice boat racing on the man made lake. A little further through the park is the Monument to Alfonso, a brilliant arch filled with beautiful carvings. In the park used to be a zoo , with bears and various animals but thankfully was no more. They still have peacocks here . A further walk leads us back towards the Airbnb and a bite of breakfast and collection of suitcases and were waiting for the bus to the airport. When we board the tickets with 10 journeys on isn't valid and we have to pay a furthere 5 euro each.We make it to the Airport well on time and finally on our way again. Long haul flights are like childbirth, painful but we'll worth it at the end. After a long haul we arrive and after what seems like forever the guys pull up.
It's a really strange thing the connection I have with these adoptive children I meet, but the feeling of joy when I'm reunited with Diana and finally getting to meet Oscar and Violetta is indescribable. After getting picked up we had gone back to Oscars parents to change cars, Oscar was in his dad's car because only cars with a Mexican plate can drive in Mexico city at certain times.
I'm surprised at the fact they still have a tree up, but Christmas isn't officially over until the 2nd . We briefly meet Oscars gran and mum and then a two hours drive and once we arrive it was straight to bed.

  • Passing Through

    31 de janeiro de 2020, Espanha ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

Whilst looking for flights to Mexico I found it much cheaper to book our journey with a stop off in Madrid. After a quick flight we collect our luggage and jump on the tube to our Airbnb it was a couple of changes but nothing too complicated but on arrival we couldn't gain access. After numerous phone calls i suggested we go and grab a beer and a bite to eat. Across the road is an Irish bar so we head in and after fish and chips and a G & T and a few emails i finally get the access code. We finish up and after dropping the bags off and a quick shower we head out to explore the city of Madrid by night.
Madrid is so romantic with its beautiful architecture, wonderful aromas and windy streets we strolled for a couple of hours enjoying a coffee along the route. We arrive in the Plaza de Jacento and i stumble across Paw Patrol, Mario and his friends I willingly have my photo taken with them and as i go to walk off they start shouting at me in Spanish they start to give chase and Im literally being chased by the whole crew of them I dart down alittle side street and down a small cobbled alley to find a lovely traditional Spanish restaurant offering the best Patatas Bravas in the world, How could we resist. I started chatting to the girls on the table next to us and had overheard the conversation that she had just been living near mexico city for six months and told them we were going to the town of Queretaro and she couldnt believe it as thats exactly where she had been. She told us how beautiful it was and the many beautiful places there were to visit. We buy an ice cream as we walk through the Theatre distict before heading back to the hostel to get a decent nights sleep.

  • Szechenyi thermal baths

    1 de julho de 2019, Hungria ⋅ ⛅ 35 °C

After a late arrival we literally dropped our bags and ran out to get a bite to eat so the unpacking has been left till this morning. I check on Google maps and the Szechenyi thermal baths is within 50 mins walk and as I've explained to Amber, no better way to explore a city than walk. I just keep stopping to look around me. The city is so beautiful . Budapest is split in two, one half called Buda and the other half Pest. We are staying on the Buda side but at some point during the week we'll venture a across the water.
Our walk takes us through streets flanked by huge houses and government buildings until we stumble across a restaurant I've been recommended called Vimtage garden. It's a beautiful place adorned with flowers very vintage chic. I order the mussels and have to say they're the best I've ever eaten. Bellys filled we continue although the temperature is 36 it feels more like a full on hike than a stroll through the park. .
Eventually we arrive at the baths and boy they don't disappoint. It's one of the largest medicinal baths in Europe, supplied by two thermal springs. The water is on average 38 degrees which is about the same temperature as the weather at the moment. We spend the whole day here just chilling. There are also cold pools as well as a full sized swimming pool and I get in and out the hot and cold hoping for some medical miracle for my sciatica and I have to say by the time I get out there is definitely some relief from the pain. It's a miracle!!!!!
We aim to catch the metro back but when we get to the ticket booth the machine has over heated and gone blank so we can't buy a ticket. If you get caught without a ticket it's a £100 fine so Amber and I walk through the park and jump onto a tram that looks like a flexibus.
There are multiple modes of transport here and it's so easy to get around. We head back to the apartment and glam up for the evening.
Amber treats us to a beautiful meal by the river and as we walk back we decide to take in an ice cream. The problem is we can't find a place that sells it and end up walking all the way back to the river to get one. Amber happy we head back to the room xx

  • Thelma and Louise do Cambridge

    4 de março de 2019, Inglaterra ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

I catch the early train to Wrexham to be greeted by my lifelong friend Judy, I have never been to Cambridge and thought I'd do a day here before heading to the big smoke of London. The journey is pretty uneventful with a quick stop off for a coffee. The satnav says we should arrive at 1538 which is when the bus is due to arrive at Papworth hospital which is where Judy is dropping me off. As we pull up outside the hospital the bus is just driving off . It wouldn't be me without drama and Judy hastily gives chase flashing the bus to stop but there is no one at the next 2stops and eventually pulls over at the third. I've just got my case off the backseat and don't even get to say goodbye as the bus starts to pull off without me on it. After screaming and waving my hands in the air the driver sees me and lets me on.
I arrive in Cambridge just after 4pm but literally drop my bag and head out. The city is full of beautiful college's and old buildings, the oldest dating back to AD1000–1050 st Benet's church. As I walk down winding streets I encountered a few dead ends as some of the college grounds are closed to the public with it being so late in the day. The benefit is the sun setting lights up the beautiful stone of the buildings.
The river Cam runs around the city and as I walk along the rivers edge old bridges cross me in and out the city with canoeists drifting underneath them. The city itself is full of shops and high-end retailers. I grab a bite to eat before walking back to the Airbnb. I hit the sack as I have an early bus to London in the morning and will be doing a good deal of walking tomorrow. I don't feel I've done enough of this lovely city but have thoroughly enjoyed what I've seen. Next stop London 🥰

  • The Big Turkish Wedding

    7 de abril de 2018, Turquia ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

So the day has arrived and I don’t even know what time the wedding is so hopefully Mustafa hasn’t forgotten about me. I take breakfast early and make my way to the shop downstairs to buy a throw top put over my shoulders and my head if needed. I should have done this yesterday as they only have carvalla or Chanel cashmere and silk and they want 100 euros for it. I pretend he hasn’t the colour I want. I google map for a local mall and it informs me there’s one 15 minutes away so map in hand I set off. The route takes me a strange way and I end up walking through a factory yard with some unforgiving stairs but carry on with a smile on my face saying marahaba which means hello. Eventually I arrive at the destination but no mall in sight just a few random local shops, but there is one that sells scarves/ throws and they’re only 2 quid. I purchase a couple it would be rude not to and make my way back to the hotel when Mustafa calls to say his friend Ahmet will pick me up at 2pm I jump in the shower and get myself ready a little unsure what I’m wearing is correct but I look ok and I’ll worry about it when I need to . Ahmet is fashionably late but that’s just the way it is here due to the traffic. Thankfully Ahmet speaks fluent English and when we arrive at the home it’s pandemonium so he suggests going for tea. We sit in a little bar around the corner and to my surprise a short while after Mustafa walks in looking petrified. I give him a mummy cuddle and tell him to take deep breaths I even offer him a cigarette but he refuses. As he disappears in the distance we can hear the sound of drums and after finishing our tea we make our way down to the house. There is quite a crowd gathered and I’m introduced to multiple members of the family, how I’m going to remember their names is beyond me.
The drums start getting louder and as they come up the hill they are followed by traditional Turkish dancers who are similar to the English version of Morris dancers, they dance in the street to the music being played by the pope and drums and have a hankerchief/cloth in their hand. The music and the drums play for about 10 minutes before Mustafa suddenly appears being driven bu his brother. Everyone runs to their cars and we all follow in a large procession heading towards Elifs house. All the cars are adorned with a ribbon and has we drive through the streets everyone beeps their horns intermittently for the whole 15 minute journey. We arrive at Elifs who conveniently lives opposite a mosque. Before collecting his bride Mustafa and his male family head into the mosque to pray while we are entertained by the dancers. The boys and I hide around the corner so we can have a cigarette and after 30 minutes Mustafa is ready to take his bride.
The street is in chaos as people are hanging out of the tower building to catch a glimpse of the bird but the whole road is held up as the dancers continue to dance in the middle of the street. As they come down prayers are offered and were on the road again - convoy has nothing on a Turkish wedding. The traffic is really busy and it takes us over an hour before we actually arrive at the venue which is decorated by huge flower displays sent by multiple companies and banks which stand in the foyer as well as outside. The two sides of the family stand either side greeting the guests but the bride and groom are absent.
Ahmet has driven well and we are some of the first guests to arrive so we’re seated quite quickly in a room that must have taken so much to plan with over 25 pages of seating plans. All the names are in alphabetical order and although I’m not meant to be with Ahmed and Mohammed they tell me I should sit with them. We are all hungry and attack the bread rolls like we haven’t been fed for days.
The venue is breathtaking with tables beautifully decorated and in the centre of the room a platform on one side decorated with beautiful flowers two chairs and a table and stage on the other with a band playing turKish music, a huge boom video camera overlooks all the proceedings recording the images to screens throughout the room. A photographer moves throughout the room taking pictures. The starters are put out on the tables as the guests sit down as there are a lot of tables to cover it really is seamless. Mustafas dad takes to the stage and gives the only speech of the night the lights go down and the music plays and the bride and groom enter the room pyrotechnic fountains start flowing and the couple make theyre way down the red carpet. Taking a seat at they’re table they sign a register and take they’re vows. Once all the formal stuff is done it’s time for the photos. They both look really tired at this point but still have so much to do as they go around every table to greet their guests everybody wants a picture and a little chat and after an hour or more they are still meeting and greeting, her bridesmaid follows behind with a basket in which gold coins with red ribbons attached are placed in the basket which was traditional as the men who went to war if anything happened to them the bride had the gold to take care of her financially, There is no dancing until the very end of the night when various groups of men took to the stage from very young to very old dancing to each song slowly first then building with speed at each verse. It’s time to head back and after saying goodbye to the remaining guests the boys drop me to my hotel .

  • Magic Carpets

    5 de abril de 2018, Turquia ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

I wake quite late in the morning and after a quick shower just about make it for breakfast. My room is amazing with a fully equipped kitchen and even a dishwasher. Every toiletry imaginable with luxury bath robes and a mini bar containing about 12 different spirits. Breakfast is on the same level with fruits I’ve never seen before( and I’ve seen a few) a multitude of hot dishes and even a whole honeycomb you cut off for honey. I indulge more than I would usually before making my way to the shuttle bus to take me to the suhmaret district. I get dropped at the airport and head for the metro. With a quick change to the tram It takes about 40 mins but is absolutely packed and after giving my seat to an older gentleman istand in the crushed compartment until my stop.
As soon as I step off the buzz of Istanbul envelopes me like a warm hug. So many people say to me don’t go to Istanbul because of terrorism but terrorism is something that lives in our own back yard and to be honest the way they drive here is far more dangerous.
Although I’ve visited the ana Sophia mosque and blue mosque before I’m excited to return as their beauty is breathtaking. Sadly one is closed for refurbishment and the other for prayer. As I turn to leave the area a Turkish guy speaks to me and asks me if I’ve seen the cistern. I say no and he asks if I’d like to? I agree and after a small walk he points to it and carry’s on walking telling me to follow. I can’t believe I’ve fallen into the tourist trap and before I know it I’m in a carpet shop. After nearly an hour I’ve learnt a lot about silk carpets and when I ask the price of the smallest one the guy tells me it’s 1100 quid, I’d expect it to fly for that it’s no bigger than a bath mat. After much toing and froing I make my excuses and leave the shop but before leaving ask if they can give me assistance in buying a wedding gift. I’m taken to a jewellery shop and purchase my gift of a bangle for the bride. This is traditional as when the men went to war the women would have the bangles to be able to survive financially if anything happened to their husband.

  • The Henna night

    5 de abril de 2018, Turquia ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

I leave early in the morning to catch my flight to Düsseldorf then catch my connecting flight to Istanbul. The journey runs pretty smoothly until I get to Istanbul where Mustafa’s cousin picks me up. The traffic has caused massive delays and I’m at the airport waiting for Two hours until finally Hakan arrives. We are due to be at the henna party at 730 and it’s 630 now with an hour and a half drive. There is no time to go to the hotel so just grab a quick wash while the housekeeper irons my dress. I look a show as I touch up my make up for the third time today but at least I’ll make the bride to be look at her best.
We arrive at the ceremony and it’s in full swing but when I arrive it’s like the queen has just stepped into the room. Mustafa’s fiance Elif calls for me to go to her boudoir where she greets me and we chat for a short while. I had no chance of making the bride look better as she already looks stunningly beautiful x I join the head table and although there are only a couple of people who speak english there is no issue as I just watch and learn.
The venue is set out like a wedding venue in the uk with tables spread throughout the room laden with food and soft drinks and chairs wrapped with bows. The bride enters the room with an enterage of drummers and tambourines to traditional Turkish music in the most amazing gown. We dance around the bride doing variations of steps that by the time of got the hang of it were on to the next dance and I’m learning all over again. By the end of the 4th dance I decide to sit down to avoid standing on anyone’s toes for a while. Elif disappears again and comes out in a blue gown this time. She really is like a princess and once again we make a large circle and dance around the bride who certainly has a few dancing moves and knows how to enjoy her last night of freedom.
Towards the end of the night Mustafa arrives and it’s time for the henna ceremony. As one of the selected few we are taken away and dressed in traditional clothes and a small veil and given a candle. We form 2 lines either side before Mustafa and Elif are brought out together this time. Elif now has the most amazing red dress and veil on and they walk towards a seat on the stage has a canopy. Henna is placed in the hand of the bride covered by a paper flower to keep it in place and Elifs mother gives her blessing. Mustafa leaves shortly afterwards and we carry on dancing the night away. It’s time for me to lay my head but what a truly remarkable experience I can’t wait for the wedding. Sorry no photos due to respect ✊

  • City tour

    22 de fevereiro de 2018, Finlândia ⋅ ⛅ -15 °C

Ada arrives shortly after 9 , it’s moomoo day in school so mama has gone to spend the morning with Elma. We eat a small breakfast and chat a while looking at old photos of when they were young, she then drops us at the university where papa is waiting. His girlfriend works here so we are joining her for an early lunch. The restaurant is open to anyone and is only a few euros which means that no one should go without at least one good meal a day and the food is delicious with multiple choices.
Next stop is the town centre, we park in one of the biggest car parks I’ve seen which runs the length and breadth of the city but all underground it is fully heated so if people park here all day they don’t have to defrost their cars. The streets up above are also heated so for the first time I see a pavement without snow and ice. Just when I think I couldn’t eat anything else it’s into the cafe for coffee and cake 🍰
Something I love here is they’ve encompassed the poppy into design and every where you go you see it from bedding to napkins, pictures and clothes I love it.
We then drive down to the beach 🏖 well sort off , it’s hard to believe there is actually sand beneath all this snow, but there really is and the proof is the little beach huts for you to get changed in. We were due to go ice fishing 🎣 today but with it being so cold papa has advised against it, and although there are people actually fishing it’s for the hardened proffesionals and even they have a bottle of vodka to keep warm.
The latter part of the afternoon is spent shopping buying all the little Bits of home that ida can’t get in the uk but I also indulge. In Nordic countries they have cloudberries that are the most heavenly thing I’ve eaten so I’m bringing some home. Back at home Ada has cooked dinner and we all sit down to eat with her mum and sister for the last time well at least I thought so but shortly after we’re back in the car and heading back to her dads place where there is homemade blueberry pie and homemade cloudberry jam cheese bread coffee cake and custard. I must have put on so much weight since being here but the diet can wait. I’ve had such an amazing time but would love to come back in the summer to see things differently.

  • Sweden

    21 de fevereiro de 2018, Suécia ⋅ ☀️ -18 °C

As we are so close Tina offers to take us to Sweden 🇸🇪 for food, it’s literally a case of crossing a bridge and we’re there. The first thing we see as we arrive is Ikea and we head a little further into the town to find a place to eat. It’s quite a small town but we settle for a little restaurant that we can’t make out whether it Tina’s or Pina’s. We enter and there’s not a sole in there. The menu offers burgers kebab reindeer chicken and meatballs Ida fancy’s kebab and I opt for reindeer but they have neither so I suppose when in Sweden meatballs it is. I can’t believe with such a small menu they haven’t got half the stuff but we have a little giggle and shortly after our food is served.
After the Santa Claus experience I have to say it’s a massive anti climax, the potato is so salty I can’t eat it and as soon as we’re finished we can’t wait to get back to Finland 🇫🇮🇫🇮 .

  • Santa

    21 de fevereiro de 2018, Finlândia ⋅ ⛅ -11 °C

I wake early because I’m excited as a kid at Xmas. Today is the day I’m going to meet The real Santa Claus.
We are visiting a few places today and shortly after 9 we’re on the road. Our first stop is in a place called Kemi where we visited the snow castle. I have never experienced anything like it before it’s a full sized castle made of ice with carvings all the way through it. We buy a cup of fruit wine 🍷which is very similar to mulled wine and then make our way through to the chapel. You can marry here and even stay in one of the fifteen hotel rooms which are themed by phenomenal ice sculptures, each one a different theme. Outside is a big ice slide which I go down on a rubber ring. It really is something else. The crazy part is that in the summer it melts and each year they build a new one, and the work that must go into it is amazing. Back on the road again and our next stop is lunch in Rovaniemi in a great little restaurant called Koti which means home in Finnish where we enjoy chicken and black bean soup salad and freshly baked sourdough bread just what we need to warm the barnacles. It’s only a short drive to Santas village and because it’s this time of year the majority of people are Chinese as its Chinese New Year they have holidays and what better way to spend it. We make our way through the building showing various aspects of different countries versions of Santa and also how the original Santa used to be. I’m shocked as we round the corner and there are only a few people in front of us. This is definitely the time to come as the queues would me massive during the Christmas period. Then it’s my turn to make an appearance. I must say I feel slightly nervous 😬 On the door is a sign saying no photos but to buy one is quite expensive so I take a few shots discreetly hoping he won’t notice . Who do I think I am trying to kid Santa 😂??
I sit next to him and he asks where I’m from and when I say liverpool he says “do you know Sammi Hypia ?” I joke that I knew he was a Liverpool supporter because he’s got a red suit on. He asks if I’ve been good and I tell him “most of the time” and he says 6 days out of seven isn’t bad. We chat a little more and I’m shocked at how much time he spends with me because I know what a busy man he is. As we smile for the camera I have an overwhelming sense of happiness this really has been a dream come true even if it’s 40 yrs late😂. As I’m saying goodbye I look at the photos and it’s so good it would be rude not to and reluctantly pass over the tourist trap euros but think this will look good in the centre of my photo collage.
The Santa village is based on the artic circle so after getting the obligatory photo we spend another hour roaming the various gift shops filled with lots of various items from reindeer droppings to Christmas decorations and even though they are very similar each shop seems to have different things. Our next stop is Santa’s post Office where every single letter from around the world is kept and stored and you can also send postcards which will get stamped at the sorting office here with an option of it leaving today or another post box for Xmas. Our time here is up and once again we’re back on the road (with a little detour to Sweden- see next footprint) before arriving back home a few hours later. I take the opportunity of having another sauna and get into bed relaxed and blissfully happy.

  • Husky Riding

    20 de fevereiro de 2018, Finlândia ⋅ ⛅ -11 °C

I wake early this morning and wrap myself up warm before making a cup of tea and going out to sit on the porch. I’m so grateful to Ida and her family for giving me the opportunity to collect more experiences and memories and this trip is something that I will treasure and remember for the rest of my life x it’s -24 this morning and boy does it feel it, it’s a different type of coldness than ive experienced before its fresh and clean and because there’s no wind if you wrap up warm it’s nice. I sit and watch the sunrise with my second cup of tea, but no cigarette because I’ve left my lighter on the table for no more than 5 minutes and it’s frozen solid 😂. I put it in my pocket and after 10 mins or so it’s working again. Everyone gets up at there own pace and as I help to clean up the house Ada gets the baby while Jonathan and Ida shower. I return to the balcony and sit for a while just taking in the peace but it’s broken by a tapping noise. I go inside to ask what it is an Jonathan says it’s a woodpecker. I’m shocked to hear they have them here but they have 2 species the white and the rare black one. We cant see which one it is as the noise echoes so could be coming from anywhere. This morning we are off husky riding and I’m so excited although it is so cold I make sure I wrap up extra warm. We are all supposed to be going but Ada’s said it’s too cold for the baby so it’s just us two girls and Jonathan. It’s only a short drive from the cabin and once we’re all wrapped up we head into the safari centre to book in. We have a brief of how to use the sled and make an emergency stop and then it’s down to the field to meet the huskies. I’m actually going to be driving and Ida jumps in ready for the ride of her life 😂. I’m surprised at how much pull the huskies have and I’m quite glad that I’m the leading sled. The huskies go pretty fast around the set track , and obviously know where they’re going because I certainly don’t. At one point we hit a pretty sharp corner and I have a bit of a wobble but we’re soon back on the straight and narrow but the tears are streaming down my face from the cold and before too long the ride is over. We dismantle and get an opportunity to meet the huskies properly as well as seeing reindeers and to my astonishment a llama. We spend a little more time here before going to the Apollo drive through to collect food and drive over to papas to eat it. I have ordered a chilli 🌶 🍔 which comes with pineapple hot sauce and salad and is one of the best I’ve eaten and the chips come with every topping just amazing. After dinner papa needs to do some snow work so I go out to join him and as I’m stood on the porch he comes round the corner with a massey Ferguson tractor with a huge shovel and snow blower. He clears the snow From the sheds and retrieves two stand on sledges and the rest of the guys join us for more snow fun. As I sled down the hill I realised I don’t know how to steer it as I power down the bank I can’t turn and ride directly into a huge mound of snow luckily the sled hits it before I do. It’s soon time to pack up before we make the 2 hour journey home which seems to take forever as the baby’s really restless and me and Ida are in the back seat with her. The sunset 🌅 on the way home is a saving grace and sets the sky on fire. We arrive home safe and sound and ida puts the sauna on for me. When I get in it it’s fine but because the apartment sauna is so much smaller than the cabin one I nearly fry when I put the water on the coals. Totally refreshed I jump into my pyjamas and we have a few hours with Ida’s friend before i hit the sack 🛏Leia mais

  • Sledging Fun

    19 de fevereiro de 2018, Finlândia ⋅ 🌙 -13 °C

I wake just in time for the sunrise and just as I think it’s not that great the sun lights the sky with a beautiful orange glow. Once everyone is up we have breakfast and after a shower we’re out the door. The first stop is in the town where we go in the designer shop that sells lots of local wears including hand knitted items and clothes as well as artisan items. We take a walk down to the lake, but can only walk so far as the track is dedicated solely to skiers and they go crazy if your caught 😂😂
We make our way to pick up moumou ( grandma) and on root I spot a park full of snowmen. We pull over and Ida explains they we’re built a while ago when it was warmer but because it’s so cold they haven’t defrosted. Back in the car we arrive at grandmas before taking her to lunch at the local spa. Lunch is pork cooked in a mustard sauce and various other items including salads and potatoes. After lunch we drive to Ruka a small town but it’s one of the largest skiing resorts in Finland as much as I’m keen to try everything skiing is a no go for me as breaking my leg would destroy the long term plan and knowing how clumsy i am I’m not going to take the risk. The scenery here is beautiful even though it’s a lot of trees and snow its very different every way you look. We make our way back to the cabin as sledging is today’s activity and Ida’s goddaughters are meeting us there. I try and convince moumou that she should join us but she’s having none of it so me and the girls head out with the sleds. I can’t believe how hard work it is the going down is fine but as I get off and try and climb back up the snow is waist deep and I literally have to climb through it and by the time I get to the top I can barely breathe. We have a couple more goes and it does get slightly easier as the snow gets packed. Ada then suggests we go along the road with the sleds and she pulls me. I have a scream but i have to say when I have to do the pulling it near damn kills me. We finish up and head inside for the best hot chocolate ever joined with Finnish sweet rolls called laskiaispulla which are filled with cream and jam followed by coffee ☕️. We are joined by lots more family and loads of kids. It’s great how family are so important here and everyone talks rather than watching tv 📺 we all sit round the table and drink coffee and eat breads and cheese this is very traditional so who Evers house you go to the put the percolated coffee on and everyone comes together at the table , even the young children. The only telly that’s been watched since I’ve been here is the Winter Olympics. Everyone leaves after a few hours and the Sauna is on. it’s a well known fact that going from hot to cold is really good for the soul so sticking with tradition I jump out of the sauna and run outside where I roll in the snow then back into the sauna and I have to say it’s amazing. Shortly after as I go outside the sky is lit up in one area and I run back inside to tell the guys. They come out and confirmed it’s the northern lights and as they’ve seen it before I stay outside to try and get some photos. I truly am blessed to see them as it’s not a regular occurrence here but another box ticked and I go to bed a happy bunny.

  • Finnish Traditions

    18 de fevereiro de 2018, Finlândia ⋅ 🌙 -18 °C

We wake at 8 and I’ve slept well even if it’s not been for long. Ida’s sister is on her way to pick us up to drive to the chalet where we will spend the next few days. Ada and Elma (Ada’s 18 month old daughter) arrive shortly followed by Tina (Ida’s mum) and we all enjoy a breakfast together followed by me having a little browse around the outside of the House. There is only a small community here and the nearest shops are a car ride away together with the only pub for miles. For breakfast I eat a rice pastry with a dressing of eggs and butter which tastes very similar to egg mayonnaise but nicer. Belly’s full and a three hour drive ahead we set off. It’s crazy how a smidging of snow brings the uk to a standstill and even though the roads are well gritted they still seem treachorous to me. The whole journey consists of snow and trees which I suppose is pretty understandable as Finland has 80% coverage with forest. The snow clings to the trees making for the most adorable views. We stop halfway for a coffee but it’s not quite a Costa. The coffee here is traditionally strong but it’s warm and that’s what is important. I pay a visit to the ladies and have soon come to realise that it’s hard work getting dressed and undressed. It’s so cold outside but whenever you go into a place it’s so warm you have to strip off. After refreshments and redressing were back in the car for the remainder of the journey. The cars here have plugs a bit like hybrid cars but the plug here keeps the engine warm so it’s easy to start.
After more trees and snow we arrive in kuusamo and at Ida’s dads cabin. Jonathan Ada’s husband is here and as we sit around the dinner table drinking coffee Papa cooks reindeer stew. It’s so good traveling with local people as you get to see the traditional family ways, and even though her dad doesn’t speak English everyone else does so communication is good. The reindeer stew is delicious and as soon as we’ve finished we head up for the most amazing sunset. The colours are so vibrant and the contrast with the snow certainly makes this one of my favourites. After the sun has gone down there is something that they call a blue moment here, it’s not like just the sky turning blue it’s more than that but something that you just have to see.
Early evening we make our way to moumou’s which is grandma in Finnish and awaiting us is more food. Grandma lives literally at the end of the road and when we arrive all the family are waiting. We eat and drink and I have a traditional coffee with cheese yes cheese. You put the cheese in drink the coffee and then sprinkle the cheese with sugar and eat delicious. After spending a few hours it’s time to get back on the road and head for the final destination via the K supermarket on route for essentials. I love walking round foreign supermarkets and can’t believe they have a pick and mix for pets.
We arrive at the cabin a short time later and once the fires going finish the evening cooking sausages on forks in the flames followed by marshmallows. What a truly amazing day
