    Day Three - Dunedin

    After txts, reading about the roads opted to stay another night in the same place.
    It rained all day!
    I quite happily filled in my day with reading, sending txt msg, watching a little tele/Netflix.
    Very pleased I have the internet and being so accessible to information and keeping in touch with everyone.
    I am self sufficient with a shower, toilet, power, bed, food, heat and cooking facilities. Gas for the heating and cooking.
    In the late afternoon I needed fresh air, so put on my gummies (wellies) coat grabbed my umbrella and off I went. There is a walk way right behind my campervan. Didn't actually realize the stream was so close! 20 steps would I be okay in the night? How far would it come up? I trusted the alert system would work and I wouldn't have a problem. By the photos you will see how much it went down over night (or you may not - you have to be here) so I didn't have to worry.
    I guess there are about 10 vehicles in the park.
    One chap, traveling with his wife and two children came to check on everyone in the park. Nice thing to do.
    This morning I walked up to the reservoir behind the park. Good to get my steps up but still not enough. The rain had stopped and I had too many clothes on for such a walk. I got very hot. As you can see the reservoir was okay. I wonder how much it was up yesterday with all the rain.
    Turns out the people beside me are good friends with Whangarei friends! Small world - we met in Cromwell earlier this year. Julie recognized me. They very kindly took me down to the supermarket in a car they have while in Dunedin.
    I will now have options for my meal this evening. Great feeling.
    The road is still blocked but hopefully will be open tomorrow, so one more night in Dunedin. I have no plans to be anywhere anytime so I am okay to go with the flow. I will book my ferry crossing when I get to Christchurch.    Les mer

    Day Two

    Very wet night...!! I am in north Dunedin and resigned myself to staying on. Then opted to get up and dressed and pull the blinds. The NZMCA park at Woodhaugh st, is tarsealed so no problems with grass and bogging. No flooding I can see.
    Not sure if I will move on up the island or not. From my limited skills of searching the net looks like the roads are okay.
    Very pleased I have the internet and can "discuss" moving on or not.
    Will add more as I decide.

    Decided to stay put for another night. I have full gas bottles, so good heating. Plenty of food - perhaps not what I fancy but won't stave. It was my intention to go to the supermarket today to save me carrying the food down the stairs at home.
    Books to read, computer stuff and I can watch tele/Netflix if I want.

    North Island

    I finally managed to leave home around 2pm. Loads to do with my plans to be away till Christmas. I thought I would count the number of times I went up and down the stairs but too busy trying to get everything in the camper and forgot after a couple.
    House had to be clean and tidy also.
    Pretty sure I have everything but couldn't remember where I put the spare keys for the camper. It wasn't a problem last time so I will have to be extra careful this time. I may remember where I put them in the next couple of days.
    The weather wasn't too bad and I didn't have to put a coat on to load the camper.
    It rained all the way here to Dunedin. Still heavy rain out there!
    No problems with the roads but a little of water in the paddocks.    Les mer

    I left Invercargill around 2pm. It rained all the way to Dunedin and still is! No problems with the roads but lots of water in the paddocks.
    I wrote two paragraphs and not sure it has uploaded. So apologies if I am repeating myself. Just trying to remember how to use this app.
    Parked in the NZMCA park in Woodhaugh st in the Leith Valley.
    From all accounts may not get further up the Island because of flooding.

    Last Footprint

    I have wanted to own a campervan for years and like I said it was part of my NZ Post super scheme that allowed me to purchase the camper back in Oct 23. Purchased it in Christchurch with the help of my brother Winston. If it wasn't for him I would probably still be talking about it..!! I drove it home from Christchurch, been for two weekends away, another trip to Christchurch in Dec to have a few faults repaired, before embarking on this trip. My knowledge was limited - very limited about the workings of a camper. A steep learning curve and still things to learn.
    The trip was planned with a dental procedure in Dunedin (left home 12 Feb) and tripping around, ending in Bannockburn at Easter. I thought I might only last two weeks!
    I have driven 3586ks. I will get the grey waste connection changed to make it more user friendly. No mishaps really. Two stone chips on the window. The fuel gauge issue that was a problem but was resolved. Still haven't found a name for the camper.
    It was all about people for me. Not everyone's cup of tea to visit 3 school friends, 17 ex Air Force people, (8 at one meal), 7 friends, 4 old workmates, and 7 family members - excluding the ones I stayed with and the family reunion. Some really interesting conversations - most were 50/50 but some it was all about them and I would say 80/20! Like I have said after a long period of time people have had a long time of living and I was impressed how they live their lives. I did what I wanted on my holiday not what others thought I needed to do.
    I didn't do many touristy things this time. Went to several museums and saw Dot's Castle at Oamaru, the mail boat trip and going to the caves at Karamea. The caves certainly challenged my comfort zone. My plan was to bike and walk more. I have done this but not as much as I thought - more than the last two years. Pretty sure that will continue now that I am back. I also thought I would read more - again half a book and several magazines and a lot of games on my tablet. I didn't watch the tele and perhaps one program a day on my phone. Communicating was easy with the internet. My old hand written dairies came along for the ride and it was the plan to type them up. Didn't even open them.
    Cost and budget: some places were free or donation. Most $5 per night. Best deal Karamea $7 and a free shower. Most expensive $50 in Haast. The only time I saw a custodian at the motorhome park was in Murchison.
    The longest drive was from Haast to Alexandra or maybe Timaru to Christchurch. Toughest part of driving Buller Gorge and Queen Charlotte Sound drive.
    I only had two days of rain and heating on two nights.
    My Fitbit - least number 3166 most 16342.
    I have a new appreciation for road designers and the people that maintain the roads.
    Amazing scenery on my travels.
    Mostly another person would have helped with photos and directions.
    The family reunion was better than I thought it would be. Loved seeing the kids interacting with other branches of the family. I, too had time to chat to my extended family.
    The only time I thought I would come home was at Greymouth - then it was too far to drive in one day!
    I was considerate on the roads pulling over was easy when you don't have to be anywhere at anytime. For me it was easier to pull over than have the pressure of cars behind me.
    I managed seven weeks on the road. Meet some great people and certainly learnt a lot about travelling alone in a camper in NZ. My backing skills have improved 100%. Some situations I trusted that it was meant to be eg the cave trip.
    I missed my tomatoes ripening and could have stayed home and waited for them to be ready but life is short and I got out and did it while I am still fit and able.
    The rough long trip plan is to go to the North Island late September or early October.

    Bannockburn

    This morning I was up and away reasonably early compared to the last few mornings.
    I headed to St Bathans. I have been there before and wanted to go again. It was quite early and I was the only one around. Last time it was summer and loads of people around. The weather was cool and some rain. Walked down to the water. There was a track but with rain clouds forming decided not to walk around.
    The colours on the trees are pretty awesome and I loved seeing all of them.
    From there it was on to Naseby to see another ex Airwomen. What an incredible couple very very interesting life they lead. I have seen some great gardens on this journey and Marilyn certainly is an expert gardener.
    Her husband Eric is a resorter and collector of cars and motorcycles. Very sort after I think with his skills. Lovely collection that I am sure many would be impressed to see.
    As I was passing Charley's place ( the ex Air Force chap I had coffee with yesterday) I called in at Lauder. I knew a little about his place and it is a green home and he is off grid. He built it all himself. Pretty amazing.
    I then headed to the family reunion at Bannockburn. I was surprised at how close it was to the township. A school camp. I am parked up in my camper next to my sister and others will join us in the caravans/motorhomes, others will stay in the accommodation.
    This will be my second last blog. I will post another on Tuesday after I get back to Invercargill, with a round up of the trip.

    This morning I had a wander down to the shops and got a couple of things. This afternoon I meet up Charlie Lamb. He went to South school and Tweedsmuir like me. He went on to Boys High. They wouldn't let me go there. He also was in the Air Force so we had a great catch up.
    Not a lot else happening with me today.

    Lazy morning and for the first time in a few days I didn't have to be on the road or being picked up.
    I have been first out but this morning I was well last.
    Did some cleaning in the camper and with the pool right next door opted for a lovely shower and hair wash.
    Tried to find some cousins in Cromwell. No one home so left a note.
    Had a wander down the old town. Not many pic's of the area. Sorry those who might like to see some. Perhaps in the next couple of days.
    One thing I was impressed with is the autumn colours - oh my gosh that are spectacular. Again I will try and get some pics.
    Cromwell is 25k from Alexandra and loved the scenery.
    Saw Janice and Mark from Whangarei. They are staying at her sister's house while she is away. They are travelling in their campervan. Another couple are staying as well from Whangarei in their camper. So plenty of chatter about the three campervans, journeys etc. Great to see them again.
    This morning I saw a camper with the car on the back that was in Waimate at the same time as me. Love the paint work and took a pic this time!
    The park is pretty full but got a spot easy.    Les mer

    The neighbours invited me into their lovely motorhome for drinkies last night. Great talking about the places they had been since Murchison. Fun people.
    This morning I headed away and stopped at three places for a "look" and a walk. Missed one but that's the way it goes sometimes.
    Didn't go into Wanaka - I heard the town is super busy already with Warbirds this Easter.
    I saw a sign saying Museum so I was able to go in. Wanaka's Transport and Toy Museum. Certainly feeling my age when the displays are things I owned, used or driven! Love the memory lane. So and so had a car like this etc. Impressed.
    Drove on and ended up in Alexandra. Fuelled up the camper, for the last time this trip.
    Found a Nzmca park and happy to be here over night.
    Weather certainly improved as I headed south. Very wet over night and damp this morning. Cool breeze here.    Les mer

    For the first time since being in a park over night I didn't speak with my neighbours. They seemed to be chatting about biking and then later on a lady came in alone and I rightly or wrongly decided I didn't want to talk to her.
    I was okay and away first this morning at 9am.
    Headed down the island and wasn't in the sight seeing mood. So only two pics and not sure where I have been. I think I stopped at Bruce Bay. Drove through Franz and Fox. I think I stopped in Whataroa for a cuppa and talked to Jack.
    When I got to Haast I searched out a POP and one at Jackson's Bay. 25k. Half way - actually less - thought it would be worth a phone call to check if sites available. No reception. Carry on and as I got to the turn off said this road isn't maintained. 1 K to go I thought I am not taking the camper down. 1k on the bike easy. Got the bike off, helmet on and within 200m a big tree blocking the road...!! Imagine trying to back out ..!! I certainly made the right decision. At Haast in a camping ground. Not cheap but with others so happy. The two couples travelling together from Levin welcomed me.
    Raining so no drinkies but I am certainly having one!    Les mer

    As it turned out the couple that I had been on the tour with had pics of my camper in the Buller Gorge. They had been following me. Not sure how to save them from an email to put the on here. So excellent to see the situation with the camper, rockface and the other car! Fiona sent them to me.
    This morning I was awake early - weird how the body clock works sometimes.
    I headed away about 8-30 and managed that tough bit of road when I was fresh. No road works like Thursday when I went into Karamea. All off because it is Saturday.
    Again only a couple of cars behind me and pulling over was easy and allowed me to drive at my own pace.
    Drove through Westport and stopped the other side for breakfast/ morning tea at a place called Charleston.
    It was then onto Punakaki or the pancake rocks. I don't remember the last time I was there. I do remember as a 15 year-old going there and I will be keen to hunt out the pics to compare.
    It is a well organised with a great pathway down to the rocks. Not sure if we use to be able to walk on the actual rocks when I was young. Cannot now.
    After yesterday's trip to the cave I have a different appreciation for the rock formations. Pretty awesome. Wish I had the skills to get the blow hole "working' to show you. Pleased I stopped in the campervan friendly place.
    On then to Greymouth and a quick trip to the supermarket - I will have options for my meal tonight..!
    The train arrived while I was at the supermarket that I guess was the transalphine. Loads of people on it and waiting to get on.
    Saw a sign post for Shanti town but kept driving.
    Sussed out a place at the Kumara Junction cafe. Parked up for an hour no one else came so moved 7k down the road to the township of Kumara with three other vehicles. Feel much happier.
    A correction too from the other day when I thought they were kiwis or pukekohe - they were wekas!
    A few sandfly bites that have been a bit irritating but manageable.    Les mer

    Caves

    It is amazing how things turn out..! Jack (son) was keen for me to come to Karamea and go into cave. I enquired about it yesterday and it sounded like it would a bit much for me. However the universe had a hand in it and I spoke with my good friend Sandra and she and her hubby did it in Oct 22. She said I would handle it. Made a call after 8pm and was able to go on the trip at 9am this morning.
    The tour guide picked me up from here and we headed to the start of the experience. Near the start of the track we picked up another couple. Low and behold it was the couple that came into the Murchison motorhome park late on the night I was there and then we were leap frogging on the Buller Gorge. Fiona and Geoff are from Auckland.
    The travel in the vehicle was pretty spectacular with a narrow road and loads of bush on both sides. Yvonne was the driver and a very good one at that.
    We reached the place where we started walking. I think it took something like 40-50 minutes with us stopping to look at things and hear Yvonne's knowledgeable information on birds, trees, plant life, predators etc.
    I never thought I would go in caves! I surprised myself. Did pretty well with only a few times getting help from the others. It was certainly outside my comfort zone!! You have to challenge yourself. I am pretty impressed I managed it.
    Nature is amazing. I didn't take a zillion photos because it is one of those things seeing the pics is not like the real thing.
    The package included lunch. Yummy sandwich, cake, fruit and a cuppa
    After lunch we went into the arches. Great day and a real sense of achievement.    Les mer

    Karamea

    Last night the people opposite me were sitting around having happy hour. In my time in the parks there don't seem to be many happy hours. I think people are keen but don't want to be the one to ask. I joined them. Two couples from Levin travelling in two motorhomes, heading to the airshow at Wanaka. The sun was shining and it was very nice sitting in the sun chatting away. The custodians were also there helping members. So helpful to some because the road was closed and conflicting information. I figured out I was good where I was going. No roads closed for me. Maybe next week is the closure.
    Opted for fish and chips from the pub. Bit naughty since I only had them on Sunday night. Oh well.
    Chatted too with the other couples next to me as well. The night goes. I did learn that I can lock the storage cabinets on the outside of the camper and then press the lock in. Probably won't make sense to most but for me another wee hint/gem that will make life easier for me.
    This morning I was one of the first away. Buller Gorge is certainly a challenge!! Beautiful scenery though. Mountains full of trees. River on one side.
    I thought I saw a kiwi! Let me think um Kiwi's are not out in the day time Wendy! I am guessing it was a young pukeko, brown in colour.
    At one stage the nerves were certainly tested, when a car coming towards me that I couldn't see as I entered the one lane part of the road. This vehicle is big and I backed a little back but could see I didn't have anywhere to go with a big rock face on my side! The chap managed to squeeze by and I stopped soon after that for a decompression. Very worrying on the system! Other parts had stop go lights thank goodness.
    Finally made it to Westport I had a walk around and stretched the legs.
    Jack had said about Karamea and a cave that was spiritually. It was still quite early so decided to head away after fueling up.
    The road was yet another challenge! Thankfully no one behind me so took it easy. No pressure.
    Went to the information centre and she recommended 17 K drive to a DOC place with the assurances it was straight road. Headed away and saw four campers behind the pub. Yes that will do me. So parked up here for the night.
    Phoned up about the cave and decided I wasn't fit enough to do the two hours walk with others. It would be too frustrating for them waiting on me.
    Did crank up the bike and went for a short bike ride. Something is better than nothing.    Les mer

    Last night the blog would not load. I tried all night without success. Didn't change anything and this morning pressed upload and away she went....!!!
    Weird.
    June cooked a yummy roast last night and invited her friend Alan to join us. June is very caring of a lot of people and I am sure everyday I was with her she took food to someone. Her happy place. Alan also returned quite a few dishes from meals June must have taken him.
    This morning it was time to say goodbye to my dear friend June that had been so good to me. We went for lunch and dressed nicely - did I take a pic - NO. She wasn't dressed but had to get a pic. The bond we share is amazing and our friendship over 27 years.
    Drove to Wakefield and saw the last old friends until Central Otago. Donna lives in a tiny home that is way bigger than my camper!! She has got an amazing garden and fruit trees. She loves it.
    It was on to Murchison and the motorhome park. I did so well and as per normal grabbed the closest park. What seemed like five minutes later six vehicles came in. They had several sets of temporary lights on the road so I guess they caught up to one another. Hence six vehicles arriving at a time.
    Lunch and then a wander down to a second hand shop and the museum.
    Now the park is full. 50 spaces and for the first time I have seen a custodian. Pleasant chat about did I know about the yellow cloth on the side mirror if you are in trouble. I did know about that.
    Once again I did notice in the sign in book it was two people all down the page. I could have been home watching my tomatoes rippening or be here. Think I have made the right choice.
    I have been so lucky with the weather. Another lovely warm day.    Les mer

    Last day in Nelson

    Another day of little going on. This morning I went to the supermarket and got a few things that I needed.
    Emptied the tanks that needed to be emptied and filled up with water. So the camper is ready for the next stage.
    Astrid popped in for a short visit. A "Watson" relative. Great to see her but would have been nice to have longer with her.
    Finally sussed out a place to refill the gas bottle. You may remember that last time I got the gas bottle refilled it was still half full. This time it only had 1kg in it so better.
    It is interesting how things work out. I took a video of my Dad talking about his life, his time in the Air Force, softball and family back in 2008. My brother has put it on YouTube so I watched the two sections on softball yesterday and today. Mum also part of it. I haven't watched them in years so lovely to see them again, and see how things have changed since 2008.
    I also went for a walk late yesterday afternoon. There is a cemetery further up the street and I resisted on the way up but couldn't help myself on the way back. They are always interesting for me.
    Another brilliant day weather wise here in Nelson. Believe even some sun shining in Invers today.
    Moving on in the morning to Murchison or Westport.    Les mer

    Lunch out again

    Sorry again Southlander's another super day weather wise here. I think it was 22 degrees at 3pm.
    Last night June's son and partner arrived with fish and chips. Great eating and good to catch up.
    June and I went out for lunch today (is that four days in as row for me) . Lovely place even if the wind was a little cool. Very tasty food.
    We then went over to the vegetable barn next door. Loved seeing the different types of vegetables and food and in such an area good prices.
    We then popped to June's son's place to grab some meat of her's from the freezer. I had to get a pic of his pig. I said he is due to become bacon soon. No he is a pet..!
    I am about to change and do some exercise after the big lunch!    Les mer

    Sorry Southlanders super weather here in Nelson today.
    I headed to Mapua to meet an old school friend and we got around as teenagers as well. I also have connections with her family. Brother and her late parents.
    What a great spot...!! Beautiful. I have been there before with June but the weather was a load better today. Must be a lot of bike tracks around and a good spot for coffee after because there seemed to be a couple of bikes going by every minute.
    After a catch up I drove on to Motueka and Kaiteriteri.
    Again magnificent place and people were swimming, sunbathing and playing cricket on the beach, paddle boarding etc. I bet you can't move in the middle of summer.
    There are times when I wish I had a passenger to take some pics. Too hard to find a spot to pull over. The last pic is two trees in the main street of Motueka when I was stopped at the lights.
    I did notice some trees were starting to change colour. Autumn is here.    Les mer

    Catching Up

    I have had a great day. Some days things just fall into place. It was my intention to go with June to her friend's birthday lunch. In the end June offered me her car and away I went and not go to the birthday lunch.
    Headed into the Nelson and went to see an ex Air Force friend and arranged to meet after he closed up shop.
    Nipped around to see another friend. Carol and her late husband are/were English. Brian was in the radio club with Tony in England. They came to stay with us in Invercargill. Lovely to see Carol and daughter Fiona. Not so good to see Carol struggling with hip problems. They have lived in NZ since 2005. Their other daughter came for a holiday and stayed here and so Brian and Carol followed and sister Fiona. Amazing garden. Carol has really green fingers.
    Back to see Pete Wise and by chance another ex Airwomen, Stef was visiting so Pete took us to lunch. Super catch up. I had been concerned because our yearly communication at Christmas hadn't happened so pleased he is still Pete with a super attitude to life and is in good health.
    I then popped back to see a former school friend and seems she has moved but the new resident said the people next door know where she is. Very nice chap dialled Donna's number and we will catch up next week.
    Another former workmate lived a block from Donna's and since I was so close called in. Never would if she didn't live so close. As always great to remember those we worked with when I first moved back to Invercargill.
    Previously I had popped into the library to try and track a "girl" I played softball with. I saw Maxine here in 2011 and she gave me a piece of pottery she had made so when I see it I think of her and was keen to touch base. I didn't find her name on the electoral roll but saw a name Dorothy Tinker - that must be her Mum. Again it wasn't out of my way and it was on the way back to June's.
    This lady is 95 and of course remembered Mum and Dad. She had her sister there and another former Southlander visiting as well. Seemingly she plays bowls four days a week and still lives independently. She has shared Maxine's details and I will be keen to contact her.
    Back to June's to deliver a meal to a friend that had been in hospital this week and then to deliver a birthday cake to her friend. June is a top cook and whipping up a fruit cake is so easy for her. It tasted excellent as well.

    Another day with little to add.
    June lives in a back section so I have been sleeping in the camper on the street. Like I have said I never thought I would do that...! Feel safe as houses.
    Late this morning June, myself and another friend of June's went to the Home and Garden Show here in Nelson. Pretty much like any other show like this in any town.
    The only thing I got was some salami. Transporting things in a camper with the fridge being turned on and off is risky or just too much for one person. Other things too sweet and tempting for me to have in a camper!
    Mitre10 was our next port of call and I got too new click clacks for the hose and the power cord and a new packet of toilet "pills". In the toilet you put one pill and water to dissolve the solid material and neutralise the contents so no smell. I have found the smell of the first lot of "pills" quite strong. There are also options for other products that I will try in the future. Now that is reverting information. NOT.
    We then called at June's friend's place and now home.
    Weather is cooler this evening and trying to rain. They would love rain for the very dry soil.
    Did have a txt from a friend travelling from the North Island to the South Island in a camper van and I smiled when she said she knew where I was! Big brother knows everything.
    Very unexciting day in the life of someone in a campervan but still wanted to post something. The photos will be even less exciting!    Les mer

    It seems my blog didn't upload last night. Not sure what happened. Very little to report just that I did 2.5 loads of washing. It will be excellent to have choices when I dress.
    The lady I am staying with, June and I have been friends for nearly 27 years. June lost her son two months after I lost Hayden. Interesting how people come into your lives. June was in Invercargill and moved back over 20 years ago. Very skillful gardener and I will post some pics of her amazing begoniasLes mer

    Today has been a domestic day. June washing machine was going at full pace and 2.5 loads were done. Great weather and it will be super to have options to wear and nice clean sheets tonight. All dry folded and put away.

    Pelorus Mail Boat

    This morning I parked on the main street of Havelock that I had sussed out on Tuesday that there wasn't a time limit. I walked the three blocks to the mail boat jetty.
    Seemed easier for parking a camper there than down on the foreshore.
    As I checked in did I want lunch? Pretty hard to decide when you have just had breakfast. Hell I could be sea sick and not want anything. Opted for the toasted sandwich.
    It is a couples world. All couples except one young chap and another couple with an extra lady. It was okay but not totally. Sat at the back of the boat. Soon nattering to people around me.
    The boat is similar to the Stewart Island ferry.
    It is a tourist boat that delivers mail. Not a mail boat that takes passengers. Must make it worthwhile with all the people on board from a profit point of view.
    It was probably an hour before we did the first drop off. The chap was English and only came to NZ for the summer. I wonder if he was a ham radio operator because I am sure Tony talked to someone up this way.
    It is pretty amazing where people have built homes. A lot are holiday homes. Power, internet I wonder about and if something breaks pricy to get a tradesman to fix things.
    Not sure how many places we stopped at and the kind of "trollies" they had to get the goods back up the hill from the jetty to their house. Very innovative. I was impressed.
    Some went on a farm tour, so we dropped them off and they took us for lunch. The cafe is in the middle of no where! As we would jump in our cars to go to a cafe or out for a meal, people hop into their boats and go on the water for a meal out...!! Amazing.
    One passenger was a woofer. Young people that come to NZ and work for nothing and help people out and get their room and food in return. This chap was working by the time we were leaving the restaurant.
    As I walked in order for Wendy so that was good. I didn't have any sea sickness. Well oiled machine.
    Excellent commentary the whole time about the people that live there and other interesting information. A lot of the farm land has been in the same family for generations. Showed and told us a lot of how mussels are farmed. Wilding pines too. Who knows what else I heard about but forgotten.
    Saw a couple of seals but no whales or dolphins. They do see them regularly on this trip.
    It was a long day away just on ten and not back till after 4pm.
    It had been suggested I wear warm clothes. I was over heating on the jetty before we left but soon after leaving knew I had not overdressed.
    The day was overcast so no sun. I could taste the salt on my lips.
    When I got back it was in the camper and away to Nelson. A bit of a test with driving but not as bad as yesterday on the Queen Charlotte piece of road.
    Here with my good friend June and absolutely going to take advantage of her washingmachine tomorrow and the weather forecast is good to get it all dry! Sometimes small things excite me!    Les mer

    Havelock

    This morning I took the bike off the back of the camper and went biking. It was very enjoyable even if I didn't do many K's. Much easier to stop and take pictures without trying to find a park. On my travels I did see a new look NZ Post posting box. First I have seen with the new colours. After the bike ride I went back to the racecourse and emptied and filled the various tanks on the camper. So all good. Not a perfect empty, but okay for me.
    When moving on I was passing the VTNZ I popped in to get my road users print out for the windscreen of the camper. Again it is the first time I have needed to buy more road users and in hindsight it would have been better not to do it online. I had hoped it would have been sent to Invercargill and Jack could have sent it on. I just know I will have moved on by the time it gets to Nelson. We live and learn.
    Set the GPS for Havelock and she decided to take me the scenic route.
    Certainly challenging driving but I was lucky and no one behind me most of the way, so I didn't need to get anxious. I did have a smile when I saw the 50k signs and I was only doing 30.
    Very picturesque and like I said challenging driving but I kept it slow and no problems.
    My good friend of 30+ years Geoff is holidaying up this way also. He had txt me to say where he was and then I was at Momarangi Bay. It is a small world. We sat at the seaside and shared our adventures. He is going north.
    Soon enough it was time to leave and I headed for Havelock where I am going on the mail boat in the morning. So pleased I came today after that road..!! There is another route I could have taken.
    I looked at the POP here and then decided the camping ground was the best option. Certainly not as cheap but I am okay with it. Bit of a concern when she said I will put you in spot 45. Panic will I get in? I am getting a pro at parking these days! No problem parking.
    Like I said on the mail boat in the morning and then on to Nelson.    Les mer

    Blenheim for another night

    When you are staying at a racecourse I guess the odds of seeing a few horses training are pretty good. I could have popped across the road in my night attire to grab a shot. The people around still had the blinds pulled so I don't think anyone saw me.
    Indecision can be a problem for some. I debated about going on the mail boat on Sunday and by the time I decided no seats left. This morning I thought I don't have to be anywhere at any time so I booked it for Wednesday. So back at the racecourse again to stay a second night.
    I went to visit my "roomies" from Waimate and Timaru. We were parked next to one another. They in their caravan me in my camper.
    Lovely couple that I just seemed to click with. The couple of hours went nowhere nattering away about anything and everything.
    This afternoon I arranged to meet with a lady that joined the Air Force on the same day as I did. Haven't seen her for nearly 52 years. She left Wigram and was at Woodburn the rest of her time in the service. She hasn't been to reunions. Knowing other former Air Force people are reading this blog I will see if they can guess who it is by the photo.
    Different spot tonight. Closer to the buildings, laundry, toilet, showers and dump station.
    Will move on tomorrow.

    No panic to get up and moving this morning.
    After sorting a few plans decided to go to the aircraft museum at Omaka.
    Very interesting place. Two options WW1 and/or WW2. Might be awhile before I come this way again so opted to do both.
    Peter Jackson has a love of history and planes, it seemed quite evident to me there is a lot of input from him or his team. The "men" were so life like similar to the WW1 exhibition I saw at Te Papa for the 100 year anniversary of WW1.
    I am not sure what I expected but seeing what seemed like paper thin aircraft that actually went in the air and fired guns at other aircraft just blows my mind.
    Tony's (my late husband) father was in the early days of the RAF. So he was very much in my mind.
    I was surprised how many planes and memerobilla from Germany. How they ended up in NZ is beyond me.
    I wonder if the old neighbour, Guenther had relations in the German Air Force.
    It was also commented upon by others looking at the same time about Top Gun. Those pilots from WW1 just couldn't comprehend what is available today.
    I then went on to the WW2 hanger. Thinking about my Dad and the planes, history of his time in the Air Force. Would have loved to have him there to hear about his experiences.
    Sobering too that so many lost their lives. It was estimated that Germany lost over 12 million. Was it 6 million the British lost? They gave the statistics but I don't remember the actual number. What did it achieve?
    I know we didn't learn any lessons and war continues.
    Inside the museum was very dark and I only took one picture and it wasn't too bad so I could have taken more but I didn't know.
    I did buy a book about the museum that I have been reading this afternoon.
    Jack (son)did the Surf to City in Invercargill today and finished in the top 20. Well done Jack.
    I am camped up at the racecourse here in Blenheim. Very windy pleased I am not driving.    Les mer

    Life is always interesting. After posted the blog last night got a call from my nephew. He had been working further north and made the effort to pop in and say hi. So chuffed knowing how long a journey they had to get back to Christchurch.
    When it was time for bed, a light had appeared going in the shower. I have no idea where the switch is! Never knew there was one and still don't know how to turn it off.
    I was the first one away this morning from the group of vehicles parked in Kaikoura.
    It was an interesting drive from there to Blenheim. The sea on one side reminded me of Kingston to Frankton but instead of the lake it is sea.
    The paddocks are brown and then you see the green of the grape vines. Seemingly harvest starts tomorrow.
    My first port of call was Sandy who was a postie in Invercargill many moons ago. Enjoyed my short visit with her.
    I managed to get more fuel in a built up area of Blenheim. Great that the fuel gauge is working.
    Next I visited another former postie from Invercargill. Short but a good catch up with Barbara.
    Visiting not over for the day and went to see two former Air Force friends. Lovely to hear about their time in the Air Force and people we knew from those days.
    They have a wonderful garden and generously gave me figs, lemon, apples and a peach.
    It was after 7 when I left and pretty much clicked on a park over property and ended up in Renwick. A lovely truck driver helped me park my camper. It is a pub and he was having a beer. Makes it a lot easier when someone is there to guide you.
    Probably will go on to Nelson tomorrow but it could be Monday - I don't have to make a decision just go with the flow.    Les mer
