    Sinharaja Rainforest

    March 25, 2017 in Sri Lanka ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

Starting the day with a super delicious breakfast gave us the energy to go to a 5-hour-long tour to the Sinharaja Rainforest. 💪🏻

Luckily, we had a very enthusiastic and expert guide called Pali, who told us loads of interesting facts about the forest, animals and plants. 🕷🐒🍃

The best part was when we stopped and swam in a beautiful waterfall! It was so refreshing and amazing, as we were listening to the sounds of nature and felt so free. I'm sure that I will be thinking of that moment, when I have to go back to work. ☺️

That weird thing on the last picture was simply called sandwich by Pali. I was kinda relieved when we found out that we didn't have to eat the leaves, only the stuff between them. 😁 There were some coconut with some honey inside, that we really enjoyed.

    Deniyaya

    March 24, 2017 in Sri Lanka ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

I couldn't be happier that I had the chance to meet these amazing girls: Sirin and Jana from Germany. ☺️ This time we went to the Sinharaja rainforest together, and we stayed one night in the nearest town called Deniyaya.

While we were exploring Deniyaya, 2 children suddenly appeared, grabbed Jana's and Sirin's hands and took us to their house to show us a cow. 🐮It was so funny as they put 3 chairs in front of the cow so that we could watch it, like in a cinema. 😄It was getting a bit embarrassing when the whole family arrived and we were just sitting there as strangers.. Fortunately, everybody was surprisingly welcoming and kind. They showed us their house, their toys and a speaking parrot. 🐦We even got some local vegetables and some coconut. 🍈

    Koggala

    March 23, 2017 in Sri Lanka ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

Even though, I cannot really go to much further places because of the voluntary job, there are still so many things to see and do in this area!

Koggala is 25 minutes away from Galle by bus, and there is a beautiful lake with lots of little islands. 🏝 Each island is unique with different experience on it.
It's very easy to approach them by a motorboat and a guide. 🚤

The first island we visited is called Cinnamon island. The man, who lives there alone, showed me how to make cinnamon tea step by step. ☕️

On the second island, there were a 200-year-old Buddhist temple and monks living there. They were very welcoming and nice, although we didn't communicate as they are not allowed to speak to women.

Furthermore, I got a treatment called "Fish Feeling". It took a few minutes to get use to the feeling, that fishes were eating the dead skin from my feet. 🐟

At the end, I had a little walk in a Spice Garden.🌱Sri Lankan people mostly use plants and oils for medical purposes. For instance, when I got a sunburn, all they gave me was Aloe Vera, and it worked!

    Hikkaduwa

    March 21, 2017 in Sri Lanka ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

What a big surprise, that I spent another day on one of the amazing beaches. 🏖This time I have been to Hikkaduwa which is famous for its sea turtles. 🐢

Just after I arrived to the beach, a guy offered me a very nice snorkelling experience, which actually wasn't as nice as it had been advertised.. I have seen some cool fishes but didn't really worth the money. Oh well, it happens ☺️
Later, I had the chance to feed a sea turtle that was sooo huge, I couldn't believe it! It was such a great experience. ☺️🐢

    Udawalawa

    March 19, 2017 in Sri Lanka ⋅ 🌙 27 °C

What I love about backpackers is that they always open to other travellers. This time I went to this little trip with two very nice German girls to Udawalawa. ☺️

I haven't mentioned yet, that the way how people drive here is literally crazy. They don't use the lanes at all and just keep putting on the breaks suddenly. Just picture that scene from the Harry Potter movie, when they take Harry to the Diagon Alley with that bus. Well, this is exactly the same experience here. However, when it comes to travelling, the cheapest way is always going by bus. We actually paid less than £2 for more than 5 hours travelling. Nice! 😁

After we finally got to Udawalawa, we were just on time to go to the near Elephant orphanage to see how the baby elephants were fed. They were so adorable, although not very small. 🐘 At the end of the day we had some delicious curry. 🍛

We woke up at 5am to go to an early Wild Safari by a jeep. It was convenient as the safari was organised by the owner of the place where we stayed. We were also very lucky, because our trip lasted longer than the others' and also went to some secret places where there were no other people. We have seen many elephants, beautiful birds, huge buffaloes, monkeys and many more.. 🐘🐃🐒🕊

    Sahana - Surfing

    March 17, 2017 in Sri Lanka ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

After 3 days hiding in the shadow due to the horrible sunburn I got, I decided to try surfing! 🏄🏼‍♀️

There is one important thing that you have to be careful about Sri Lankan people. They love asking much more money for almost everything, especially when you haven't got a clue how much you need to pay. I'm talking about Tuk Tuk rides, fruits and even the prices of the surfing schools.

Eranda (who is the owner of the place where I am volunteering) knows many people around here, and can get me better deals. Lucky me! 🍀

That's how I got a surf lesson for almost half of the price! Thanks for the very good teacher called Blacky, I managed to stand up for the second time, which was pretty cool! However, without his help, I was quite miserable. 😅

I'll definitely go back soon! 😍

    Mirissa - Whale watching

    March 13, 2017 in Sri Lanka ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

    What an amazing day!
I managed to wake up at 5am, and had a Tuk Tuk ride to Mirissa while the sun was rising. 🌅We were lucky with Lykke, who was a Danish girl travelling alone, as we managed to get a very cheap deal for 2500 Rupees instead of 6000! The whale watching was breathtaking, we have seen 8 whales and many many dolphins. 🐬🐳
As it was still very early, we decided to have breakfast and then just to lie on the beach which was also ammmazing! 🏖😍Silly me thought that I wouldn't get a sunburn, but the weather fortunately is not the same as in England, so now I look like a lobster. ☺️

    Jungle beach

    March 12, 2017 in Sri Lanka ⋅ 🌧 29 °C

As there were no other guests to check in, we decided to go to the nearest beach called Jungle beach. 🌴 Going by Tuk Tuk was a really good idea, since we had to go to the top of a hill to get there. We had a really nice time with Lucas, who is the other volunteer from the Netherlands.
The beach was so full because people were celebrating poya day (Full moon) 🌑. There were locals making some music and we joined to them. It's funny that loads of Sri Lankan people asked us to take selfies with them. ☺️ After we got home, we had some amazing Sri Lankan curry 🍛.

    Galle Fort

    March 11, 2017 in Sri Lanka ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

While I was checking in our new guest, I found out that Lu was travelling alone, so we decided to see the Fort together. We had a nice walk around it, and saw many different and interesting things such as a Dutch-built and an Anglican church, a mosque, a lighthouse, a small but very nice beach, and many many more.. ⛪️🕌🏖We even met a monkey, and tasted rambutan which I actually really like! So weird knowing the fact that it's a fruit haha 😁Read more

    Galle Centre Home

    March 10, 2017 in Sri Lanka ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

To be honest, when I arrived to the airport in Colombo, I was in a bit of a shock.. I didn't know where to go or where I can find my luggage.. I was literally panicking 😅 Fortunately a driver was waiting for me and took me to Galle. I was so happy, after I finally arrived to the Galle Centre Home where I am staying for 3 weeks. Marga and Eranda, who are running this guesthouse and an English school here, were very welcoming and helpful.
On the last 2 pictures, we are playing Shithead with Lu, Eranda and Lucas.
