      Sydney

      February 20, 2020 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

On Thursday we returned to the city centre, as we had booked a visit around the Opera House, after which we walked over to the fish market for our lunch. A most enjoyable morning - the opera house is holding up well and is well maintained. It is undergoing a further refurbishment in the main concert hall ready for its 50th anniversary in a couple of years time. We got to see a couple of the smaller theatres and concert halls and the Joan Sutherland Hall. A structural engineer's delight throughout and a tribute to my old employer Sir Ove Arup.
We were not disappointed with our fish dinner and returned to the site after walking through the Queen Victoria Building on George Street - this is now host to boutique shopping on 4 levels and holds a letter from ER which is to be opened in 2085.
On Friday we had a bit of a rest day - we took a walk in the adjacent National Park and shared a coffee with Bronwyn and Frank before lunch after which we enjoyed some quiet by the pool. The National Park trails by the river were predominantly shut whilst Rangers sorted out storm damage, but we got a good feel for this nature reserve in the middle of the city. Maybe next visit we will be able to walk the 17k down to the harbour through the park.

      Arbeitstage

      November 5, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

Read more

      Lane Cove Walk

      December 28, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

The Allen-Tam family dropped us at 72 Woolagong Crescent for the start of our bush walk along the side of Lane Cove River. Not Monica's favourite day but timings of public transport were perfect to get us back to Waverton and an end of walk beer at Bar Quattro before enjoying dinner at Brian and Suzie's. A meatball salad!Read more

      Epping, Balmoral & Murrurundi

      May 5, 2022 in Australia ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

Whilst Geoff walked with Narelle to the Porcelain House, their new house still under construction but hoping to move in at the end of May, I walked the dogs. We then left Epping for Balmoral where we met and had lunch with Peter and a friend of his Shondell at the Boathouse. It was lovely. Because of our need to get home we left after lunch and reached Murrurundi. Here we stayed at the old Royal Hotel and had a glass of wine at the beautiful old Royal pub. It was quite chilly here.Read more

      Leaving Evelyn’s onto Tracey’s

      March 10 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Up early, Carlos took us for a walk in the bush… I thought it would take a half hour but after two and a half hours, Carlos led us back to his home exhausted 😂 It was amazing though… such a wide variety of vegetation with creeks almost empty (but gets full in the rainy season and can hardly be crossed) but what impressed me most was the noise of the bird life. Just about caught a cockatoo on camera. Amazing.

When we got home, Adrian, Evelyn’s son, and family were waiting for us. What a lovely family! Angelica, with children, Julianne and Marcus. Such chatter as they all spoke fast speaking in Spanish. After a late breakfast, we packed to head on to Tracey’s, Fran’s daughter. Though we thought we would have company… the children didn’t want to get out of our Crib 😊

A half an hour down the road into the city to Birkenhead Quays. Richard (Tracey’s husband) was waiting for us to steer us into the downstairs car park. Up to 9th floor and a view to behold of the city… you can just see the flags on top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge in the distance. Lots of catching up as in every McPherson family we’ve stopped with. 😀🥰

I opened Abbie’s card she gave me for Mother’s Day (well, it was back home in Ireland, not here) and placed on the kitchen partition for all to see. Mustn’t forget to pack it when we leave 😄

Early to bed for me at 6pm (!)… jet lag continues to arrest me 🙄 while George talked on with Richard and Tracey.

      On to West Pennant Hills

      March 8 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

While driving to Evelyn’s, we noticed a crack on the windscreen that kept growing. So the first thing we had to do when we arrived at West Pennant Hills, where Evelyn and Carlos (her husband) live, was to ring the rental firm to get them to organize the windscreen replacement. Once done, Carlos and George drove to the local garage and left the Crib with them overnight.

Evelyn suggested we go into town but first visit Fran nearby at the Meadowbank Grove Community Care Centre. Fran is George’s oldest cousin, who had visited us in Donegal with her daughter, Joanne in 2013. Though suffering from dementia, Fran was her usual frank, lovable, cheerful self. George took her through the McPherson book he had produced for her. She recalled memories of those she recognized like Martha (George’s grandmother) part of the Irish family that were holy 😄

Then we went into the city by ferry. It was awesome to see the city lights and feel the buzz of a Friday evening in the centre of Sydney. We had a bite to eat and a drink in a restaurant near the Opera House before heading back on the ferry.

Having the best time, went to Berowra Waters and had a cocktail on the water overlooking the harbour and just laughed and laughed as if no time had passed. Walked Chilli dog, had a few glasses of wine over dinner and today heading to the Blue Mountains!Read more

      Another Day, Another Beach

      November 29, 2023 in Australia ⋅ 🌧 19 °C

Our last full day in Australia has been a lot of fun.

A FaceTime with an old friend from the UK (Kate) to start the day, catching up on our very different lives. The first time Cath, Kate and I had been together since our wedding 18 years ago and once again, it was like no time had passed, conversations just rolling on but the topics a little more serious as life experiences have dictated.

We drove to the Seacliff Bridge, a highway that comes out over the water round a small mountain. Wade was particularly excited as it was a Jeremy Clarkson drive, he captured it on video obviously and couldn’t wait to pull over and actually walk a little on the bridge to get a real feel for the experience.

After this, Cath took us for what I can only describe as a bush walk that required I put runners on, (which Cath referred to as fake runners, as it was clear they were a fashion item and not for any type of running - like she knows me) which led to yet another secluded beach called Jibbon Beach. Absolutely beautiful (again) and then back into a coastal type bush walk which led to an aboriginal stone drawing site. Quite impressive.

Fish and chips for lunch at a local chippy followed by a drive through a national park where a storm came in and slowed the journey home quite substantially, leading to many hilarious car conversations discussing the bathing habits of Cleopatra.

The second half of the Mexican Train was equally as much fun as the first, hanging out with the grown up kids of your best friend is pretty special.

We decided to get some packing done before bed as we knew we wanted an early start to maximize time together in the morning, before heading off to the airport.

Absolutely great evening for our final night in this wonderful country.

      Garigal National Park

      August 22, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

      St Ives, Australia

      August 22, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Read more
