      Cracker Night

      July 1, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Happy Territory Day! The craziest night in the Northern Territory: Cracker Night. Buy a lot of fireworks, go to the beach and light it up.

Read more

Darwin en de Mindl Beach Market

      August 24, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 38 °C

      Nature and royalty

      May 6, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 33 °C

I finally found the source of the music, an amphitheatre connected to the city's botanical gardens. Having intended to visit the gardens today, I was glad of the coincidence. What was happening in the theater I couldn't tell you, guards gave me the look when I came to investigate so I left.

The botanical gardens are small but nice. I had expected them to be better care for. There were many signs warning of things broken or even 'hazardous waste' at one point, which was not the best. I imagine, as with all gardens, spring is the time to visit. The gardens definitely looked like they were on the turn and the waterfall was far from impressive. It was supposed to be quite a draw but it was little more than a trickle being artificially fed and concrete forming a dirty pond beneath.

After walking around it was midday and very warm so I sat for a while in the shade and read. I was there for quite a while, struggling to muster the energy to move again in the heat. Finay I succeeded and walked back. I had intended to visit the port but a quick google told me it was pointless and as it was 20 minutes out of my way, I chose to walk past the turning.

Back in the hostel I enjoyed the aircon and talked with an american girl in my room. Then I headed to the common area to use the wifi and watched the coronation. It was playing on the tv in the comon area but I could not turn the subtitles on so soon got it open on my phone. BBC news app was struggling with the dreadful wifi but made it through the entire thing only crashing 6ish times.

I was continuing my book for the first parts while everyone was arriving then switched to paying more attention when things started getting under way. Being 8.5hrs ahead, it was around 7pm things started getting interesting. It was fun watching the viewing stats as the morning when on. It peaked around 520,000 about 5 mins before he got the crown on his head.

The American girl I spoke to earlier joined me to eat and then ended up staying to watch with me. She knew next to nothing about the royals and found all the pageantry interesting if a little excessive. A view point I think many share in one way or another. We finally retired when my phone died during the procession, by which point it was almost 10pm and the music had finally quieted down enough to try and sleep.

      Raus aus Australien

      May 13, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

      Chilling in Darwin

      May 18, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Today was a lazy chill-day. I slept in till 11am and ate some bread and dip again (for 3 days now). Then I decided to take on the hassle to call the Government because of my Infringement to ask them about changing my penalty. I went to the hostels reception (btw I'm staying in the Youthshack), asked for the phone and called. The government lady told me to write an email (couldn't they have written it on it, that they needed everything on paper?) which I then did. After around an hour, I was done with defending myself and now it was in the government hands whether they would actually punish me for an apple or not.
Today was my problem solving day, so I went on to look for the mobile phone service store where I wanted to ask about the stupidity of the SIM cards need to be verified by an Australian Visa card. I went at lunchtime (which was rather stupid) and did find nothing. The store didn't exist anymore. Fabulous. So I walked back to the hostel, sweating as much as I could, and taking some pictures of colourful murals. Then I had the brilliant idea to get myself some ice cream, which I immediately did and ate. Less sweating.
I decided that it was way too hot outside, so I stayed in bed until 4.30pm, relaxing and trying to send a refund form to Coles about the SIM card. They didn't want me to complain so they wouldn't even receive their form. I just couldn't send it. It really was becoming ridiculous.
After eating another ice cream, I finally went outside again, melting in the heat. I put my "alright" hat on and strolled through the park at the coast. I saw the stoniest beach ever and some very weird hens. Then I went on to my actual goal: Mindil Beach Sunset Markets. They are only twice a week and luckily I was in Darwin on one of these days. It was quite a long walk, especially in the simmering heat. However, I made it there and was appalled by all these people being there as well. There were international food trucks - Chinese, Thai, Greek, American, Hungarian, you name it - and lots of art and cloth stands. Some musicians played their guitars and the people filed down the Mindil Beach as if there were no other beaches around town. I didn't quite understand all the noise about the Mindil Beach (Sunset Markets), but I was still glad to get a Smoothie there to take me back to the hostel. The walk felt nearly endless, but I made it in the end.

      In Darwin angekommen

      June 25, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Read more

      Mindil Beach Market

      May 7, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

Today we had an early morning rise with a 6am flight from Cairns to Darwin. We flew with jetstar and after hearing some negative reviews, were lucky that everything went to plan. After having high hopes for the day, reality struck with an early check in making it all too easy to go to sleep. With the early afternoon gone, we headed to the Mindil beach markets which had a variety of food. We got roti wraps and I finally had the laos mini pancakes! We watched the most beautiful sunset on the beach which filled the blue with amazing colours! On our way out we watched Mick from Mick's whips do an interesting whip show combined with interesting music, giving me Britain's got talent vibes! To finish the night, we went to the Irish bar, 'Shenanigans' for some drinks and saw a few drunk people escorted out, something we haven't witnessed for a long time!Read more

      Pitch Black 2022 Air Show

      August 25, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Pitch Black 2022 is in town right now. A three week military exercise with 15 participating countries. One of the highlights happened tonight at Mindil Beach. Was a lot of fun watching and hearing the jets of all these countries flying around the city.
