    Keltenblitz Summer Toboggan Run

    October 12, 2017 in Austria

On our way to Germany this morning we stopped off at two places - one a summer toboggan run which was 2.2km long, had inclines at 58% and an awesome chairlift to get to the top. The top of the chairlift was actually right on the border with Austria.

Finn isn't the best with heights, and only opened his eyes about halfway up the chairlift after asking me what sort of parents would make him get on this thing, and why can't we just have a day at staying at home. Bad bad bad parents is the obvious answer ;-)

We arrived an hour before they open so did a little walk up the hill to enjoy the view whilst waiting.

    Hallein Austria, Salt Mines

    May 25, 2013 in Austria

We decided to hit the Salt mines in Hallein, not to be confused with the ones in Hallstat. We had to get dressed into special outfits to keep our clothes from getting damaged on the slide and the salt. The Salt Mine was kept natural. We took a small train made up of a single board with foot rests, something that would never happen in the US. It makes you almost feel like a rebel! During the walking portion of the tour, you actually cross the line between Germany and Austria. You're in 2 places at once! A boat ride is included in this large underground lake. It's almost eerie but really neat to witness. We were able to taste the brine that was dripping from the pipes made of 27% salt. SALTY!
    Hippie Tips:
Take time to visit the local towns near the caves. Wish we had!
Lick the salt wall! Make sure it's real Salt :)

    Eidelweiss tour

    July 5, 2016 in Austria

To get us from the ice caves to the next challenge, Steve arranged for a local tour guide group to provide us some transport in their vans. This organization evidently specializes in taking people on Sound of Music tours, since it was filmed in this region. Which meant the driver was constitutionally incapable of NOT telling us each and every bit of trivia about the filming of the movie as we passed every spot that had been used, or referenced, or appeared in the background, etc. It was kind of amusing actually.

The other funny thing, is he points out this castle that was used in filming Where Eagles Dare, which is one of my favorite WWII movies (see it if you get the chance) and so I started asking him all about that and what parts of the castle were used for filming and he quickly responded, "I've never actually seen the movie. I have no real idea." Well, at least he was honest about it!
