Baby Sloth

Today was our first day of tours. Pre tour we woke up before 6am (hard for me) and went exploring the nearby trails again. We saw for a split second a coati - relative to the raccoon - but he scurried off. More birds (kingfishers) and lizards as well.
The tour is took us on a 30 minute journey to a local farm. Right upon arrival we were greeted by a nesting hummingbird. I’ve never seen a hummingbird relax and just sit, so that was new for me. The first sloth spotting was the most exciting, a baby sloth munching on some leaves. The other sloth spottings were quite impressive from the spotters, they were just a ball of fur high up on the trees. We saw 4 sloths in total, mix of two-toed and three-toed. Lumbering about on the ground were some leaf cutter ants on a mission, their congo line tracked longer than the eye could see. Even harder to spot were some tiny bats hanging out under a leaf.
Lunch was a treat! We had empanadas with salsa made fresh by the grandma of the farm and fresh pineapple (the best I’ve had and Gunter even loved and he apparently doesn’t like pineapple), watermelon, papaya, lemonade made with sugarcane (we even helped juice some of the sugarcane). We then met the rescued parrot in residence whom proceeded to bite one of the guests who was pressing his buttons. He liked us though (I’m convinced me the best) and hung out on our shoulders.
Post return we spotted more macaws and then got the idea to check out the secluded beach that you can take a boat shuttle too. We had to sign some waivers, Gunter made a joke “is this is case we sink” to which there was no response, so we signed anyway. Turns out maybe was the case haha.
The boat shuttle was less than official, and we came prepped with hiking shoes. There was no dock at our destination, they simply pulley the small boat into the shoreline breaks and just tell you to hop off. So that’s what we did. Now, we were excited because we had the whole beach to ourselves because of the rain. Well didn’t exactly work in our favor because it continued to downpour for the entirety of the over 2 hours we were there (with no hope of another boat rescue until the next allotted time slot).
Night walk came around and indeed our earlier premonitions were correct, jungle was teaming with life. We had a rainy night walk, but here’s a list of the spottings: red eyed tree frogs, mating red eye tree frogs, bullfrog, another species of frog, tree frog eggs, tadpoles, ornate cat-eyed snake (non poisonous), baby crocodile, pacific screech owl, bats, various lizards, humungo spiders, heron, baby common pauraque, a crab eating a caterpillar. I love frogs, so this was a big win of a walk in my book.Baca selengkapnya
