      Inseltag

      Very Good Gelato in Hvar

      2 augustus 2023, Kroatië ⋅ ☁️ 77 °F

      Pretty place. Many tourists.
      Enormous luxury yachts.

The alleys are mesmerizing. The harbour is full of small-craft traffic. The sidewalks filled with all manner of people, strolling or stumbling.

The sea breeze is in the 80s (high 20s) and just fresh enough to feel good after a warm day.

      Yacht time

      7 juli 2023, Kroatië ⋅ 🌬 27 °C

When this day began, we had little understanding of how it would end up. We had to catch a ferry to Hvar, which is known for being a party town, but our first night was infinitely better than we could have ever expected.

Not much happened in the day. We just wandered around the town. But as the afternoon hit, we figured it was time for a few drinks at the hostel. We made friends with the receptionist at the hostel, and she recommended going and checking out Hula Hula, a supposed "beach party" north of the town. In the end, it was little more than a cramped deck. But this is where we ran into some people who happened to be from not only the same town as us on the Sunshine Coast but they were barely a few kms from where Jack and I grew up. We were chatting with them for a while when one of them said they were going to have shots with D-Lo. As they walked off, I said to Jack that the only D-Lo I know plays in the NBA, and so I assumed it was some DJ that was playing and nothing else. So Jack and I bought a beer for 10 euro - this would bring all the money we spent on the night. When the guys came back, they asked if we knew who Diangelo Russel was (D-Lo for short). This is when I had the realisation that I just missed the opportunity to have a shot with Diangelo Russel. I began to have my mind blown, shocked at how they were drinking with him. They said that their dad knew him, and he came to their private booth. I later found out the dad of the guys we were chatting to was CEO of a major tech company that sponsored the Golden State Warriors. The two had met when Diangelo Russel played there. I did, however, manage to run into him on my way to the bathroom and stole a sneaky photo with him. The guys then invited us to the private booth where we met the dad and the rest of the family. It was clear they were rich, but we didn't quite have a full grasp on the wealth until they invited us to the yacht. We drank with them for a while, and as we all began to leave, I was speaking to the dad, and this is when he mentioned they have a yacht and invited me on for a Bundaberg Rum. I of course didnt give 2 fucks about the Bundy Rum but i did care about living large on a yacht. I couldn't call Jack quick enough to tell him and get him to come back. He ran back to the club to meet us. We were then picked up on an inflatable dingy and ferried across to the yacht with about 10 or so people. They were mostly woman that could smell the money this family had. Even the boat ride over was insane, the sun was just setting and we were jetting off to a private yacht. Jack and I had already been shouted many, many drinks by the family and by the time we arrived on the yacht we were in awe. This kind of meant we forgot to take heaps of photos as we already looked out of place and didn't want to make it anymore obvious. We were given warm towels and a cocktail upon arrival but Greg (the dad with all the money) told the workers to pour a Bundy for myself and him. We then chatted over the rumbo, and that is how I learnt about his relationship with Diangelo Russel. The night went on, and Jack and I continued to get the millionaire treatment, offered drink after drink, rides on the boat, and whatever else tickled our fancy. Carpe Diem is a world famous club in Hvar, on a private island that you need to ferry across to for a cost (entry fee) of 40 euro. Greg had conveniently parked the yacht right out the front and said the workers would boat us across whenever we felt like it. Of course, we were having too much fun on the boat to go, but he paid 500 euro for a private booth that he never even ended up using. It would have been great to experience it, but being on the yacht was such a cool experience that I had to continue.

We got a photo of the name of the yacht, and some later research told us that to rent it, it would cost you 125,000 euros or about $200,000 aud for a week. This includes 2 jetskis, a jacuzzi, and a team of 10 workers. Unbelievable day.

      Hvar, Croatia (Days 1 & 2)

      16 september 2023, Kroatië ⋅ 🌩️ 79 °F

      What we did:
      - Early wake up to catch our 6am - 10:30am ferry from Dubrovnik to Hvar Island.
      - Super impressed and excited once we got there! Hvar downtown is a unique looking town nestled in the hills with stunning views of the greenish/blue water around it, and exceptionally clean. Caribbean vibes but much nicer!
      - Hung at the Hvar Beach Club on our oceanfront lounge chairs from 11 - 6. Great relaxing day alternating between reading, jumping in the water, drinking croatian beers and just relaxing. This is the good life! Felt like an all-inclusive minus the all-inclusive $$ part. Another instance of the fantastic Croatian service we have been receiving since arriving in the country.
      - Enjoyed the sunset on our Airbnb patio and then wandered around the lit up Saturday night party town (even in offseason) before enjoying dinner in a quaint alleyways
      - Slept in and then met our captain for our 10:30 - 6pm speed boat. We just can’t get enough of being on the water; boats >>>. Incredibly relaxing and fun day bouncing around the islands and different beaches with 8 total swim stops. Also pulled up to a picturesque cabana lunch spot midday for fresh caught seafood. Favorite stop included a very small sandy beach since most of the beaches on the coast are rocky. All in all great day!
      - Debriefed on the day over a dinner of burgers at a cool bar bumping nostalgic 2000’s rap. Trent was greedily formulating plots to convince his friends to come here for his bachelor party

      Where we ate:
      - 1st day Lunch oceanside at our Hvar Beach Club. Tough commute from our lounge chairs over to the gazebo to enjoy our Croatian/asian fusion burrito and chicken satay. Broke down and had a lounge chair snack of fries (so much for our goal of limited drinking and no fries on this trip)
      - 1st day Dinner at Fig Hvar. Alleyway tables serving Mexican style burritos for both of us. So good and a much needed palette refresh of new spices after so much seafood (such a first world problem and a bit blasphemous to even say)
      - Eggs and coffee at the apartment for both breakfasts
      - 2nd day lunch at Bacchus (only accessible by boat) for caprese salad, fresh caught red snapper and seafood pasta. Needed a last taste of oceanside seafood!
      - 2nd day dinner at Lola Bar for good burgers and fries! Needed something lighter after gorging at lunch

      Fun facts:
      - We saw dolphins AND flying dish during our boat day. Truly magical!
      - WE DON’T WANT THIS TRIP TO EVER END. Sorry family and friends, once StephSnaps goes viral we are retiring to a nomad travel lifestyle and will live off the social media clout. Brains are permanently on “out of office” and we couldn’t even do accounting or tech consulting if we tried right now.
      - Hvar is one of the central stops for the now world renowned “Croatian yacht week” where thousands of 20 year olds drop $7-$10k on renting beds in a caravan of 50+ yachts. You basically sign up and the company assigns everyone to boats and you just party for 7 straight days. Most of the time is actually spent docked vs sailing.
      - The bar Carpe Diem is open from 1am to 5am every night and is only accessible by a 10 minute water taxi from Hvar town.

This day we woke up and walked around the Old Town of Hvar for a little bit, stopped for some avocado toast for brunch and then we walked to a close beach to relax for the day. Beachlife part1

      Gewitter in Hvar

      Hvar, Croatia

      17 oktober 2022, Kroatië ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Today’s morning ride was 27 miles and 2106 feet of climbing. We rode mostly with Russell and Karla and tagged onto Jan, Laurie and Phillip for a while as well. Jan is such a strong rider! She’s truly inspiring. She’s one of a few 70 year olds we met on this trip as well as a couple in their early 80’s.
The long, steady climb was just beautiful! At the summit, there was a swing next to a stand selling bike jerseys and lavender. We bought a pair of jerseys because it had a map of several of the places we rode. The descent was FAST! That’s always the joy of a tough climb.
