      Bud Spencer Museum

      19 december 2022, Duitsland ⋅ ☁️ -1 °C

      A Day in Berlin

      30 december 2019, Duitsland ⋅ ☁️ 6 °C

We arrived into Berlin fairly late by train from Prague. We shared a first class compartment which just managed to accommodate all the luggage.
Upon arrival we took a taxi to the hotel (about 10 minutes) and then went out to look for a dinner option.
There were so many options for museums in Berlin that we decided on one only a short walk away - The Berlin Bunker. It was used during the war and the museum included a very extensive story about how Hitler committed such terrible wartime atrocities. We spent about three hours here and then moved not too far away to the Berlin Wall Memorial and Checkpoint Charlie. We had lunch in a close by Irish pub (touristy of course)!
I had bought tickets for a hop on hop off bus so we headed to Alexanderplatz to try and find the right bus - no so easy due to the size of the place but we managed to find it eventually! From the bus we saw many of the huge buildings and the Brandenburg Gate. We got off the bus at the victory column and decided to walk back to the hotel from there via the Tiergarten (about 45 minutes). Dinner was across the road at a Japanese restaurant and then quickly into an Uber across town to the A-Trane jazz club. We saw a group called Unity 5 who were very good - the place was packed!
This afternoon we arrived in Copenhagen via an easyJet flight (only 50 minutes). We got the hotel and crashed for a few hours before our New Year’s Eve dinner.

      Es geht wieder zu Fuß

      2 oktober 2019, Duitsland ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

Also habe ich hier verlängert.

      Day Thirty-Four: Off to Berlin

      18 april, Duitsland ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

As I sit on my plane 20 days after this. Makes me realize how much you do forget! But really, I do remember not too much happened this day. We drove up from Prague, hungover once again, and had a short stop in Dresden. I even had two dates, as you can see. The WWII story behind Dresden is super sad. It was an important transport center for the Nazis so churchhill bombed them. But what they did was do a couple of warning bombs away from populated areas so people can take shelter; in Dresden, that would mostly be the protestant church. Then church continued to go and bomb the shit out of the church and kill everyone inside... completely innocent people. It's really hard to slowly learn about the horrible things the allies did that we just don't hear about. I did have a chance to take a quick look, and it was beautiful while looking different from Catholic churches. We had a coffee and a nice bathroom break. I feel bad for whoever had to follow me and ethan into that bathroom. After we didn't have a lot of time so we ran and shoved our faces and made a pizza burrito. When we arrived in Berlin, Bec gave us a short bus tour explaining the area and some of the buildings. Even with a short stop at the part of the Berlin wall with all the artwork. And no, Nick and I are not actually kissing. It was nice too because Nick and I wanted to have a chill one on one chat about our life's and other stuff. For the first time on the trip, we had a chance to actually go off and get time apart from everyone! We went to a very authentic German bar where they had a traditional German band playing too! We even got a beer stein that was like a 1.5 liters of beer... unfortunately it was not very quiet so not the best place but we made it work. Some of the ladies were having a self care night and bought a whole bunch of face masks, and I was invited. Ethan was so out of it. I'm pretty sure he went to bed at 8. The face masks were fun, but the problem was that it won't stick to my lower face due to my beard. It was still a fun night, just chilling and chatting with everyone.Meer informatie

      Berlin

      31 maart 2023, Duitsland ⋅ ☁️ 55 °F

Why am I always so comfortable in a big modern bad ass city? As good as Marbella and the Spanish Sun Coast was Berlin is another dimension.
From the moment I stepped outside the hotel onto Wittenberg Platz I felt at home. Totally comfortable as I walked to Die Creme for früshstück this morning. No longer walking the pretty sun brightened streets of Marbella. Or smelling the ocean breeze. Instead traffic, graffiti, folks rushing, sirens howling. But damn I was home. Finishing my bowl of granola with fresh berries and coffee I exited the small cafe to get my city pass I had purchase on line. This was going to be a day for a little shopping, learning the subway system and walking.
I headed toward Potsdamer Platz 1.3 miles away to get a proper Berlin public transport pass. Offices close. Open Monday-Wednesday or weekends. Well that walk healthy still took time and pissed me off. So I kept walking almost in circles until fatigue urged me to rest. When my legs were about to give up finding me in a jail cell for sleeping on a cold wet park bench a Hop On Hop Off bus turned the corner headed towards me. It stopped. I got on.
Not a word of English did the driver speak. I showed him the Visit Berlin pass but in English he couldn’t understand it. In German I had to buy the tour bus pass at the Tor. “Ok” I said. He let me on. No jail tonite.
Sitting in the upper deck toggling through an exhaustive list of languages I found the English narration. Up and down streets the bus went. Here’s the Opera House, then museum xyz, a decaying Berlin Wall picked clean by human woodpeckers and a remnant of a bomb out WWII building. Past Check Point Charlie into the government quarter where we were forced to stop to allow a cavalcade of police cars, blue lights on, motorcycle escorts and dark Mercedes Benzes. King Charles was here yesterday but had already departed for Hamburg. This definitely was a important politician. It reminded me of the night in DC went we were surprised by Trumps parade of black vehicles on route to the White House. It was probably a late night Taco Bell run. We did “salute” as the Beast passed us.
Anyway the bus made to the Tor and I jumped off with a quick Vielen dank.
The subway station that would get me back was nearby by.
I went down the stairs to the ticket kiosk. Location instructions were difficult to interpret and my phone was of little use. So I went looking for help. And then serendipity.
There was an older man we’ll probably my ages at a seat waiting for the train. He was wearing a baseball cap and from a distance I recognized it as the Cuban flag it was embroidered on the side and Cuba above the bill.
Incredulous I stopped and in Spanish I said “¿Tu eres Cubano?” He smiled and replied “Si.” Instantaneously, as brothers from some distant land there was an bond.
I continued asking if he knew the system and where I wanted to go. As he began explaining his train approached. I said thanks indicating I understood in Spanish of course and shook his hand.
I continue the short distance to the escalator that would take me to the other side of the tracks. As I walked across, I looked down and saw him still on the platform his train gone. He had not boarded and was waving at me to come back. Weird. I made a u-turn and headed back down.
He was very apologetic feeling he had not given me clear instructions. Since he wasn’t working today he could take the next train home.
We talked and I learned how to get back to the hotel. Then a little bit of chit chat asking him if he lives in Berlin etc. Yes he told me for the last 30 years.
I began to probe further but again the next train approached. Yeah German schedules.
I stopped the questions and asked if I could take a selfie of us. Immediately he said No, no pictures please. Ok I respect that. Many people are camera shy. But this was different. Summing it up in my mind I knew it was the long arm of the Cuban government. Stretching all the way from Havana it’s authoritarian reach beyond comprehension.
I firmly shook his hand again and patted his shoulder.
How many lives has the regime destroyed? For how many more years will the suffering continue?

      The day after

      30 september 2019, Duitsland ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Oktober.

      Day 9🇩🇪

      29 juli 2022, Duitsland ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

Woke up in Fürth, a small village near Nürnberg, Germany. We went into town early to get breakfast and walk around before our train for Berlin. Stopped at a local bakery and got a few pastries and a coffee from the nearby Starbucks. I felt quite tired so I was a bit grumpy that morning (sorry Lampros!).
Today is a big day of travelling, since our final destination will be Copenhagen, Denmark. It’s a big trip with 5 different trains to catch. There are direct trains to Copenhagen from Hamburg but they’re all booked and we can’t get any seats. So it’ll have to be that way! We are prepared!
Getting to Berlin we had just a couple of hours, so we walked out of the station, went to gate of Brandenburg, saw the parliament “Reichstag” building and the Jew monument. Then walked back to the station, had a delicious Chinese “make yourself” bowl, and ran to our next train. Next destination Hamburg.
Getting to Hamburg we had an hour to spend, so we again walked out, went about a bit and then back to the station. From Hamburg, we had to go Flensburg. In the beginning we got the wagons mixed up a bit, so we had to run to the right one and I got a bad cramp - but we eventually got there and found seats next to each other. The time was passing and we were getting tired..
Getting to Flensburg we had to wait for two hours before the next train. When that train arrived there were only two wagons but a lot more people then they could fit. The train journey was 1h 30m, and more than half the people on the train were standing cause they weren’t any seats. On top of that, because we were crossing boarders they had to check our passports so they made all the people that were standing to get off the train and then board it again. Getting to Fredericia we - again - had about an hour to spare and we were getting hungry, but there was nothing around to eat - plus it was super early in the morning so there was also nothing open. We shared a couple of cereal bars and waited for the next train. It started getting cold so I changed from shorts to trousers. At last, our last train arrived, we boarded quickly and tried to sleep. Last destination - Copenhagen!
We arrived in Copenhagen early hours of the morning, found the bus to the zoo and called Stamos to open up for us! It felt so nice to be here. ❤️ home away from home. Having a shower, getting to bed and waking up to lots of washing!!!!😂👖👚👕🧼🛁🧺

      Hop Off and On #2

I did a second loop to take in the sights, hopping off at a few more stops before diving into the detail 🤓
