      Herkulaneum

      Von Sorrento fahren wir zur Ausgrabungsstätte Herkulaneum. Der Ort ist beim Vesuvausbruch 67 n.Chr., genau wie das bekanntere Pompeii, verschüttet worden. Die Häuser sind hier zum Teil besser erhalten als in Pompeii und zeugen vom Leben der alten Römer. Beeindruckende Mosaike und Fresken sind heute noch Bestandteil der ausgegrabenen Villen. Am Nachmittag besuchen wir den Vesuv, dessen Krater von Wolken verschleiert wird. Wir haben nun genug vom Großstadtgewimmel, denn die Region um Neapel ist zugebaut und laut.       Dolce Vita und antike Katastrophen

      Nach ein paar Tunneln, die durch die schweizer Berge gebohrt wurden, sehen wir erste Palmen und freuen uns auf Italien.
      Der überfüllte Bahnhof von Mailand erdrückt uns und wir sind froh bis zur Weiterfahrt in einer quirligen Fußgängerzone bei Pizza, Wasser und Wein den italienischen Flair zu genießen.

      Die Nachtfahrt nach Neapel ist einigermaßen erholsam da wir es schaffen ein eigenes Abteil zu erobern.

      In unserer sehr netten Unterkunft in einem Vorort von Neapel angekommen, erkunden wir den Strand aus schwarzem Vulkansand.
      Große Lavasteine im Wasser machen den Einstieg schwer und auch das überall auffindbare Plastik stört, aber die Italiener und wir lassen uns den Spaß nicht verderben.
      Am nächsten Tag geht es zu den Ruinen von Pompeji. Ein Buch, das Miri den Kindern vorlas, behandelte das Ereignis rund um den Vesuv Ausbruch 50 vor Christi und so sind die Kinder begeistert die Handlungsorte nun live zu sehen.

      Am Tag darauf steigen wir auf die Ursache dieser Naturkatastrophe, die uns noch heute einen so lebensnahen Blick in den Alltag des antiken Roms ermöglicht.
      Einsamkeit sucht man an diesem touristischen Hotspot natürlich vergebens. Dennoch beeindruckt der Krater in karger Landschaft.      Read more

      Wr have just spent a fabulous night in our first tiny house.
      Didnt know what to expect but found a space that was fuctional, have everything we needed, was luxurious and comfy. Would highly recommend tiny living.

      It starts with a Mt. Vesuvius sunrise

      Early morning sunrise from the ship over the beautiful Mt. Vesuvius. Upon arriving at the port, we meet Priscilla, our guide who will be leading our tour to Positano, Sorrento, and the Pompeii Ruins.

      Our first stop was on the way to Positano to take in a view of the Gulf of Napoli. Along the way, we see olive, lemon, and orange trees. We also see many vineyards, even along the city streets. One of the top alcoholic products is Limoncello, so we made a quick stop at the factory where they sold everything lemon and we were able to taste the different versions of Limoncello.

      We continued along the switchback road down to the coastal town of Positano which we learned is the most expensive place to live on the Amalfi Coast. There are various hikes up the mountain. Along the Amalfi Coast, there are 45 watch towers which were used to watch out for pirates long ago.

      There is only one narrow road going into Positano from the main road. Once on this road, there is no turning back. Once parked, it’s shopping central. The first thing I noticed were the vibrant colors of the fabrics and I knew I wanted a blue and yellow dress with lemons on it as a way to remember this beautiful place. I was captured by a store where I peeped around the corner to find a lady, who I assume is the “Lemon Lady”, as written on the bags, hand making the bags being sold in the store. There was another lady who was responsible for painting the designs on the bags. I wanted to take home every single one!

      We continued walking down the narrow pedestrian area and made it to the beach. We didn’t have much time so we popped into the church there and enjoyed the views of the water and up the mountain. After leaving Positano with a few new bags and dresses, we circled through the town and made our way to the main road for the next stop in Sorrento. From the van, I was able to snap a picture of the Gulf of Napoli which was bustling with lots of boats.      Read more

      10ème étape ~ Napoli

      Profitant de notre arrivée à Naples, et ayant le temps avant le prochain bateau à Civitavecchia, nous avons dégusté ce que l’on nous a conseillé comme la meilleure pizza de Naples. Elle a atteint ses objectifs! 😋
      Sur le trajet, nous faisons une halte improvisée à l’aquarium de Naples. Petit mais efficace.
      Puis c’est parti pour le trajet jusqu’à Olbia en Sardaigne, suite de l’aventure ce soir ☺️      Read more

      Our deii at Pompeii

      Pompeii was a special experience. I have more of an appreciation of how the ancient Romans lived and a great deal more respect for the level of sophistication of their painting — one house (domo) we saw had extremely well-preserved frescos that had a level of detail and use of shading and light that I didn’t know the Romans produced, on par with Renaissance works IMO, and on the walls of a private albeit very wealthy living room.
      Highlights include: the sex menu at the bath house, the bakery, the original bowls of pigments, the phallic imagery (scale of penis vs money bag), walking in the forum, the mythic images, realizing how short they were (lead poisoning), and the mosaic floors (“beware of dog”)      Read more

      Naples

      On passe une nuit tranquille sur une station essence au nord de Naples. Pas toujours facile de trouver des endroits sympas, en nature ou même safe dans une région aussi dense en tourisme, mais c'est aussi ça la van life 😊.

      Au moins, on ne s'attarde pas et on trouve un parking à 45 min du centre-ville. Les villes italiennes étant facilement Zones à Trafic Limité, on ne cherche même pas à aller autrement qu'en transport en commun.

      On se gare sur un parking en partie universitaire, en partie pour tous, en partie camping-car, pour 5€ pour la journée. Nickel 👌.

      On se dirige vers la gare, et là sans avoir pris le temps de planifier, on se retrouve face à un train sur le départ, mais qui se dirige bien vers Naples.
      On entend le sifflet du contrôleur, sans réfléchir, on grimpe dedans. Les portes se ferment juste après notre entrée et on se débrouille pour prendre un ticket en ligne histoire au cas où 😎.

      Le train était super confortable et le trajet est passé rapidement.

      On arrive en ville et on déchante assez vite. On ne s'attendait pas à grand chose, mais après avoir fait les ruines, le volcan et des villages de bord de mer, Naples nous a semblé assez terne. Il faut dire aussi, qu'on avait bien mal aux jambes depuis quelques jours. Rando du Sentier des Dieux + Pompéi + Vésuve, sans pause, c'était un peu ambitieux 🙄😵.

      La ville est beaucoup en travaux, les rues n'ont pas de charme particulier à part pour le street art. La ville est assez étalée sans avoir beaucoup à montrer.
      On retiendra la galerie commerçante Umberto, similaire à celle de Milan (les boutiques de luxe en moins) et la place avec la Basilique San Francesco di Paola.

      On a tenté d'aller dans une des célèbres pizzerias 🍕 de la ville (à plus de 20k avis)... Haha, quand on a vu la queue, on n'a pas insisté. À priori, c'est à 16h qu'il y a le moins de queue, seulement 30 min... 😑
      Bref, on a mangé en terrasse non loin dans une pizzeria moins prisée, mais on s'est quand même bien régalés 🤤.
      Pizza au speck, noix, fromage sur une base de pomme de terre violette pour Rémi et pour Flo une avec des petites tomates, du basilic et de la mozzarella. On a fini avec 4 petits beignets 🍩, bref encore un repas bien frugal 😅.

      On ne s'attarde pas plus et on retourne à la gare. On retrouve le van et on reprend la route vers pour 3 bonnes heures de routes jusqu'aux portes de Rome.      Read more

      Mein heutiges Ziel ist Neapel, die drittgrößte Stadt Italiens. Ihr zwielichtiger Ruf versetzt mich zu Beginn ein wenig in Sorge um die Sicherheit meines geparkten Autos, aber schließlich war es doch kein Problem.
      Auch wenn ich mich in den letzten Wochen bereits an den dynamischen Verkehr gewöhnen konnte, nimmt die Turbulenz hier noch einmal neue Ausmaße an. Generell scheint das Chaos die gesamte Stadt zu beherrschen und es fällt mir oft schwer zu verstehen, wie sie offensichtlich trotzdem funktionieren kann. Die ohnehin engen Straßen sind überfüllt mit Passanten, allen möglichen Verkaufsständen und Fahrzeugen, die gemeinsam eine intensive Geräuschkulisse erzeugen.
      Das Stadtbild ist sehr heterogen und so liegen sozialschwache, baufällige Viertel direkt neben schicken Einkaufsstraßen, die wiederum in historische Stadtteile übergehen. Diese bieten eine große Fülle an Sehenswürdigkeiten, wie prunkvolle Kirchen, noble Palazzi und schöne Stadtplätze in unterschiedlichen Größen.
      Ich gönne mir eine Pause in der Pizzeria Brandi, die ich sich damit rühmt, dass hier 1889 die Pizza Margherita erfunden wurde. Auch wenn das nicht ganz stimmt, ist es trotzdem ein tolles Erlebnis, an diesem traditionsreichen Ort bei der Entstehung meiner Pizza hautnah dabei zu sein.      Read more

      Last day in Naples

      Our last day in Naples … we took another tour of the underground, but this time not catacombs. We saw Greek & Roman tunnels, acqueducts and tunnels that were eventually used as WW2 bunkers. pretty fascinating. The highlight was probably squeezing thru a 50cm wide tunnel for about 5-7 min, or more like a slit between two cave walls, to get from one area to another. Had to work at not panicking, but it was definitely stressful, but exciting and fun at the same time.

      Then we walked down to the waterfront and saw two more castles as well as the main square in town, which also housed the palace. Chose to just see all these things from the outside and walked along the waterfront for 30 min or so.

      Clearly have seen the difference between the tourist/wealthy areas and where the masses live. We are staying between the two so get a good glimpse of both. Where the people are living is very dirty, trash stacked up everywhere and not taken care of very well. The tourist area is beautiful, well maintained and zero trash in the streets. It’s a shocking difference between the two areas.

      It’s been so hot here - I literally don’t know if I’ve sweat this much in my entire life. Jordan isn’t near as bad as me - she doesn’t seem to have inherited the family propensity to sweat like a pig. (My dad, brother, sister and Adam all understand what I’m talking about - we just really sweat, sometimes when others wouldn’t - fun. 😃). It was 90° but with really high humidity so justified, but dang! At times I was literally drenched in sweat. So glad we have air conditioning here.      Read more
