      Delays to Destination…

      Today’s travel experience was expected and unexpected. We’d expected to experience travel glitches during our journey, we just hadn’t expected to experience so many on a single day🙃. First delay - train from Wimbledon delayed due to “emergency works”. No problem -we reroute and make the hour long trip to Heathrow. Second delay-huge line at Swiss Air. While waiting I receive a text update that the flight is delayed 15 minutes. Not a big delay but we now have only 30 minutes to make our connection in Zurich. We make the Zurich flight but an additional delay is announced as we wait on the plane ✈️. Kai naps on flight. I work. Our seats are the very last seats on the plane. We are thus the very last people off the plane. Third delay- another line at immigration but the first miracle occurs-our connecting flight to Venice is delayed. The single clerk at immigration is processing a mass of time stressed travelers. The tension in the line of waiting passengers is acute. We all have flights leaving in minutes. Kai and I let 2-3 especially desperate travelers ahead of us thinking we have extra time due to the announced delay. We clear customs and hope to find food but it turns out- the flight is holding for us (I had the time wrong). We run to board the flight🎉. Thank you Swiss Air for waiting for us. Delay four- we made our flight but our bags have not. The line for baggage assistance is long, again there is a single clerk. (Dante missed a particularly tortuous level of hell- waiting in interminably long lines with little hope of progress.) We make our report and board the waterbus for Venice. It’s a beautiful and delightful 1.25hr boat ride. We enjoy watching the sunset 🌅 and the moonrise🌕 over Venice. We disembark at San Marco- our room is 10 minutes walk away. Delay five- we can’t find our hotel. We can get within 1 minute of it using google maps but can’t find it. Everywhere we look are befuddled travelers with phones set to google maps trying to navigate Venic’s labyrinth of cobblestone alleys and passage ways. Miracle 2 is that our bags were lost. We are tired after dragging our small carry-on bags up, down, over, and across the many, many small canals and waterways of Venice. We would not have survived with our suitcases. It’s now very dark and late. We have gelato (miracle 3) for dinner and to refuel before contuing our hotel search. An older Venetian couple stops to help us. Essentially- they don’t know where the hotel is either and tell us us “it’s impossible to find your way around Venice” and that we should call for the hotel for rescue. Perhaps - Global Gaurdian should add Venice Navigation to their package of services… It’s 11:30 when we find our hotel. Our room is on the 3rd floor. There is no elevator🥺.Read more

      Unser letzter Stopp brachte uns wieder zurück an den Anfang.
      Dieses Mal spielte zum Glück auch das Wetter mit und Venedig zeigte sich uns in seiner vollen Pracht.
      Die viele Kanäle dienen als Hauptverkehrswege, was allein schon ein einmaliges Stadtbild abgibt.
      Fantastische Bauwerke aus der Renaissance und Gotik runden dieses ab und machten Venedig für uns zum abschließenden Highlight unserer Reise.      Read more

      Ausflug Venedig

      Gestern habe ich mich dann sehr spontan dazu entschlossen einen Abstecher nach Venedig zu machen. Mit Rom wahrscheinlich eine der bekanntesten Städte in Italien aber um ehrlich zu sein ist die Stadt an sich sehr overrated! Nicht wirklich viele schöne Gebäude, sehr viele Touris, nicht sehr einladend und es stinkt💩 Außerdem fällt einem die Orientierung, durch die ganzen engen Gassen und Kanäle, sehr schwer (musste bestimmt 20 leute fragen wie ich zum Bahnhof komme) 😅 Das einzig schöne in Venedig ist der Fluss und die Kanäle, für einen Tagesausflug hat es sich aufjedenfall gelohnt aber ich würde keinem empfehlen einen ganzen Urlaub dort zu verbringen!Read more

      Beach & Pool

      Der heutige Tag war wieder voll und ganz dem Thema Wasser gewidmet. Am Vormittag haben wir uns erst einmal an den riesigen Strand begeben, der nur für die Campinggäste ist. Die Kinder und auch Erwachsenen hatten sehr viel Spaß beim Sandburg bauen, beim Wellenspringen und Muscheln sammeln. Das Wasser ist meterweit relativ flach und somit auch schon wirklich sehr angenehm zum baden. Nachdem der Sand provisorisch vom Körper entfernt wurde wechselten wir zum Pool. Die Kinder hatten gestern sehr viel Spaß beim Ringe tauchen, die sie sich von einem anderen Kind ausgeliehen hatten. Da Claras Eltern sowieso in den Decathlon wollten, haben sie gleich für beide Kinder ein Set Reifen mitgebracht. Damit waren beide heute stundenlang mit Tauchen und Reifen hochholen beschäftigt. Auch Anna hatte mal wieder viel Spaß im Wasser, vor allem beim rutschen. Abends haben wir noch mit Claras Eltern gegrillt und vorher Wein an der Weinzapfanlage geholt 😃Read more

      Mhmm...PASTA

      Es ist acht Uhr morgens. Jemand shreckt aus dem Schlaf hoch und merckt: "Misst ich wollte doch den Wecker stellen, um vor den anderen Touris an der Piazza San Marco zu sein." Ein undeutliches Geraune mit der Bestätigung, dass man nun (,wenn es den sein müsse) aufstehen könne ist die Antwort.
      Eine Dusche später stehen wir auf den Strassen, Stress abgeschaltet und auf der Suche nach einem Cafe und Frühstück.
      Italiener umd Frühstück sind nun mal nicht die beste Beziehung der Welt, deshalb reduziert sich das ganze auf ein Schoggi-Gipfeli und einen Cappucino und etwas später einen weitern Espresso/Cappucino.
      Anschliessen besuchen wir die Chiesa del Santissimo Redentore, eine Kirche die nach der Pest zum Gedenken an die Opfer errichtet wurde. Ganz in Weiss und eher schlicht ist die ruhige Kirche eine nette Abwechslung zum Treiben auf der Hauptinsel von Venedig.
      Anschliessend gehts mit dem Bootsbus zurück nach San Marco, für ein hübsches Mittagessen vor der Führung.
      Um 14.00 Treffen wir uns auf der Piazza San Marco (mit all den anderen Touris 😉) für die Führung druch die Basilica und den Dogenpalast. Für drei Stunden führt uns Iole (alos wie Violet, ohne V und T) durch die Denkmäler der Stadt und erzählt uns viel über die Geschichte, Symbilok und Politik der Rebuplica Venezia. Wir sind beide interessiert und fasziniert dabei und freuen uns über all die Einblicke die ohne Guide so leicht übersehen werden.
      Um 17.00 sind ünsere Füsse etwas durch und unsere Kehlen trocken - Zeit für Aperitiv 😁
      Wir haben uns schon eine hübsche Bar vorgemerkt und geniessen unsere Select-Spritz (nicht ganz Aperol und nicht ganz Campari) in vollen Zügen.
      Als sich der Hunger meldet, suchen wir als guete Touris via Tripadvisor ein Lokal. Wir finden die Trattoria al Gazzettino, ein kleines Restaurant mit halb soviel Servicepersonal, wie Sitzplätz - Es. War. Riiiesig! - Wir essen die beste Pasta seit... Keine Ahnung... Immer? Oder zumindest ewig Lange! Dazu eine Flasche Hauswein - herrlich. Mit einem Nutella-Grappa und einer Mandeltorte als (gratis) Abschiedsgruss, verabschieden wir uns auf den Umwegen zurück ins Zimmer.       Day 28

      Wiedersehen mit Clara

      June 3 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

      Am heutigen Tag ging unsere Reise wieder weiter. Unseren „El Paradiso“ Campingplatz, der gar nicht so Paradiso war, haben wir gerne verlassen und reisten Richtung Venedig. Lange hatten wir gestern überlegt wohin wir als nächstes fahren. Ganz vorne stand eigentlich Verona. Aber da Johann nun schon ein paar Tage ohne andere Kinder und Pool auskommen musste und er anfing vor Langeweile nur noch Blödsinn im Sinn zu haben, entschieden wir, dass wir wieder einen größeren Campingplatz am Meer anfahren müssen. Im Gespräch mit Claras Eltern haben wir dann erfahren, dass sie auch heute weiterfahren und auf den Marina di Venezia Campingplatz fahren, Europas größter Campingplatz. Also stand unser Plan… dahin fahren wir auch. So sind wir heute, nach einer kurzen Pause im Einkaufscenter, auf dem Marina di Venezia Platz angekommen und was sollen wir sagen, es ist gigantisch. Kilometerweiter Strand, mega Poolanlage, Flaniermeile und Showprogramm. Mal sehen, was uns die nächsten Tage erwartet und was wir noch alles entdecken. Johann ist auf jeden Fall sehr glücklich. Mit Clara sammelte er bereits einen ganzen Eimer voll Muscheln, war Zuckerwatte essen und schaute sich die Show an.Read more

      Sunday, last day in Venice

      First I have to mention the most amazing thing that happened last night…we were standing on a bridge outside our restaurant waiting to be called in, when a couple came up and she said “I don’t believe it….” I gazed at them blankly, who could know us in Venice?? Anyway it slowly dawned that is was Cassandra Farrell (my ex-niece!) with her husband Henrik who I had never met!!! Of course, they do live in Europe - in Denmark - but what a coincidence…they were in Venice for the weekend, but to be at the same spot in Venice on the same day!!! So that was exciting and fun, and we hope to see them when they come to Oz at Christmas.

      This morning we got going leisurely as no time constraints. A beautiful day as promised - cool to start, and almost hot in the sun by afternoon. First we went to La Fenice to take a tour to see the whole building. Fabulous…you pay to enter and then download an audio guide on your phone (with their wifi) and we went right through the whole magnificent building. It is huge, and much larger then looks from the front, and in fact, if you walk round the little lanes to the canal at the back there is what was originally the main entrance as the nobility would always arrive by water (they would not walk!!)…the main concert hall is stunning…they were working on the stage, presumably setting up for Daughter of the Regiment which is on in about a week…we could view it from the boxes…very rococo and ornate, but somehow not overpowering. It has twice been destroyed by fire, but like its name, it has twice risen from the ashes. (I had not realised that Fenice means Phoenix).

      After that we walked along the riva Schiavoni, through the slow-moving milling throngs, towards the park at the pointy end of the island. Paused for a juice, coffee and pizza slab to keep us going, and then sat in the park with kindles. That was the plan, but Amr decided to look at the Biennale exhibits which are right there. So he happily did that and I happily sat in the beautiful park. Amr says to report that the Australian exhibit had a welcome to country…Wandered back, absolutely stunning light on the sparkling water, and being Sunday it was difficult walking as everyone was out and there were people traffic jams in all the narrow streets.

      Tonight we go to an opera in a palazzo! Meg and Stephen recommended it so that is good for us, and it will be fun…it is the Barber of Seville….what can go wrong! ….and it was fun! We are now back from the opera. Really intimate, about 70 or so people, and a piano, violin and cello provided the music…very spirited and funny. The barber of Seville is a comic opera so they spoofed it up and involved the audience in a fun way, and modified the story to accommodate fewer characters, but it is such a silly and complicated story that even a purist wouldn’t care, and they sang all the good bits!! A great evening. And it was lovely in the palazzo - each act we moved into another room…hard to describe the whole experience, but we are really happy that we went.

      Da wir unsere 2 verwöhnten Fellnasen an Board haben checken wir natürlich auf dem 5 Sterne Luxuscampingplatz ein…mit sämtlichem Luxus für den Hund von Welt…exclusiver Hundestrand…Gassibereich und natürlich Hundespa mit Warmwasserdusche..zur Begrüßung gibst für jeden noch eine Dogbag mit Feuchttüchern und Kotbeuteln…läuft für die Beiden 😂 zur Freude aller haben wir auch unseren Stammplatz 8181 ergattert von dem wir einen super Überblick über den Platz haben…Read more

      Und schon sind wir wieder in Venedig angekommen...eine kurze aber doch sehr schöne Reise mit viele Eindrücken...
      Venedig ist eine bunte und laute Stadt...viele schöne Häuser...verwinkelte Gassen...und überall Menschen.
      Bei einer Gondelfahrt...ja das musste sein😂...haben wir die kleinen Kanäle durch schippert...und nein der Gondoliere hat nicht gesungen 😉....
      Heute Abend dann die Abschiedsparty und dann geht es mit dem Flieger ✈ wieder nach Hause...
