      Buongiorno Venezia, Italia

      November 16, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Buongiorno! Come va? We depart Innsbruck, Austria, approximately 0730 am and are crossing the Italian border by 0800.

At some point during the evening, my phone had died and my beautiful deep sleep was interrupted at 0600 by the landline ringing in my room. I felt I'd experienced some divine intervention. Some confirmation from the universe that my journey, both through Europe, and indeed, life itself was guided by a higher power. I had not requested a wake-up call, yet I was woken in good time to ensure I wasn't left behind. I then shared my (spiritual!) story at breakfast. And it was explained to me Luigi had told us all that wake-up calls had been arranged for everyone. Bubble burst. I finish breakfast. Pack my play lunch and big lunch, and board the coach. Another country. Another spoon stolen.

Venice. Unassuming as we approach by ferry. Once we'd arrived though. Wow. I'm not sure I can find words to describe the beauty of this city. The intricate detail and opulence. The soaring monuments, colour, the marble and statues. The art. The history. The turquoise waters of the canals. This city breathes romance and I can't help but wish I had a love to share this moment with.

We weave our way to Murano glass, an icon of Venice, and I'm captivated by the glass blowing process. I mentally commit to the classes I've been meaning to do forever. I splurge on a set that speaks to my soul. No regrets. Keep an eye out for that delivery Dad 🤑. You may need to pay the sales tax 😉.

Michelle, my new found best American compadre and I, board a Gondola with 2 lovely ladies in our group, single though travelling together. We are dismissed of the romance. Our gondolier must too be a divorcee, jaded in this city of love. I take control and play "That's amore" through my spotify. It suffices, though it seems more appropriate to blast milkshake. We're all soon singing along to milkshake through the canals of Venice. It does not however, bring any boys to the yard.

I sit alone in a Cafe and appropriately order an Italian merlot. Tiramisu. And delight in the beauty of Italy 🇮🇹 .

Salute to new friends, and Graci Venezio, graci.

      Glass and lace tour.

      May 7 in Italy ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

      Its raining. Steady.
Murano 1st. To look at glass.
Torcello 2nd. Where we had lunch.
Burano 3rd. Lace to be had here. And colourful buildings.
Once again, not enough time to explore each island. Burano is the pick of the bunch. I reckon a few hours required.Read more

      Amr’s birthday in Venice

      September 30, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Another lovely day! Had breakfast at our little place right under us…a fabulous eatery, and very popular…in the morning there is an array of pastries, and yogurt, fruit, granola, and by lunchtime it has transformed to pizza, bruschetta, focaccia, panini - all fresh and very appealing. And wonderful coffee, fresh juice (and wine, beer and the eternal Aperol!)…so we are well placed for food. Then we set off walking - this time over the Rialto and into the markets there (saw the baby calamari that I would love to buy in Oz)…then on to the station via the different route..all very lovely along the endless streets, canals, bridges and campos. I totally depend on Amr as a guide…totally lose my sense of direction in these streets..now learning some of the landmarks on the route to S Marco…!

The high tide came up again and the walking boards came up in the piazza S Marco…it was receding by the time we got there and we sat on the dry side and had a drink watching the scene till our allotted time to visit the basilica. With great agony Amr had managed to book tickets online as we knew it reduced queuing time to get in, and we had watched the chaos of people trying to enter….so we went early thinking we’d have wait a bit, but to our delight we had immediate access, and were blown away yet again by the magnificence of the building, the gold mosaics just everywhere - quite dazzling. We even paid extra to see the Pala d’Oro which is an elaborate slab of gold and jewels, with enamel pictures…impossible to describe…created as an altar cover (instead of cloth)…altogether a beautiful visit.

We are starting to understand the weather…it is fine in the morning, and in the afternoon it clouds over, and today it did rain - needed umbrellas - and was more than passing clouds! But never pouring rain. Amr has just told me that tomorrow and Sunday will be fine in Venice! We’ll see.

Tonight we go to the concert in La Fenice, and we think we’ll have a little late dinner after. Tomorrow we plan to take a train to Vicenza, to have a look round there, and maybe stop off at Padua on the way back. It will be a bit of a break to walk along normal streets for a change - much as we love the alleys of Venice!

Now back from our evening…the concert was lovely..it was a Belgian sextet (the Phoenix Sextet) playing Wagner, Brahms and Schoenberg…not in the big opera theatre but in a smaller room suitable for chamber music…I think there are 3 halls - the opera hall, the concert hall and the chamber hall…we think we’ll do a tour if we can fit in to see it all. The renovation since the fire is beautiful…very light - white ceilings, peach coloured walls and trim, chandeliers.

The concert finished soon after 9.30, and I hoped there would still be restaurants willing to feed us…but no problem - a small place just round the corner from the hotel was open (and a few more came after us)…we had a delicious meal - Amr had a veg pasta, I had gnocchi, and we had grilled vegetables…perfect. A good birthday I think!

Day 46: Palazzolo Della Stella to Venice

      May 29 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

On our backstreet drive to Venice we passed more wineries. I spotted a huge market at Latisana. We bought some gear but the best was the fried prawns and squid. So light and perfectly cooked. We parked at an official campsite for our 2 night stay in Venice cos I needed a proper shower. Took the boat taxi to Venice and did all the usual things. Rialto bridge, the Basilica, food, wine, shopping, selfies, gondola, live music by night, St Marks square. Big day. Only spoiled by the hour long tram delay past midnight.Read more

      I am fascinated by Venice

      October 5, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Comprised of 118 islands connected by numerous bridges and walkways, the “roads” of Venice are its canals - 150 watery roads. I’ve never felt drawn to visit or learn much about Venice, but our travels landed us here, and I now find it fascinating to see people getting around on all sorts of motor- and human-powered watercraft on narrow waterways. It has a long history, and it’s many old buildings reflect that long history. The building where we are sleeping the next two nights was originally built in the 14th century. The canals are all connected to the Adriatic Sea and are subject to tides. As such, the watery city is very vulnerable to climate-change related sea rise.Read more

      Ciccetti and Canals

      April 7 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

Walked and walked Venice in the mist and in the baking sun 🌞
Wonderful sights around every corner... lots of dead ends, but that's what makes it fun.
Lovely venetian snacks (ciccetti) and so relaxing (out of the main drag)Read more

      Venice and the Grand Canal

      June 23, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Founded in the 5th century and composed of over 118 small islands, Venice became a major maritime power in the 10th century. The whole city is an extraordinary architectural masterpiece. It is also known as the birthplace of composers Tomaso Albinoni and Antonio Vivaldi. Venice and its lagoon are a UNESCO World Heritage site. It used to be an independent republic, and remains one of Italy's most important cities, with a quarter million inhabitants. Dave and I took a ride through the Grand Canal as well as a trip over to Lido an island not far from Venice known for its beach. After we came back to Venice and explored Saint Marcos Cathedral and piazza. Venice has decayed since its heyday and suffers from overtourism, but the romantic charm remains.Read more

      Venedig Part 2

      August 5, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

Ein wundervoller Tag!Read more

      Venezia / Venedig 🇮🇹

      September 23, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Part 1 Trieste to Venice The Train

      October 5, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

I never dreamed of going to Venice. I never even really wanted to go but when Dave said the train was going by there I thought we have to stop. And so today was the fated day! The train was great and we even had seats for our packs. I love the Lipstick Woman who sat next to me and the three backpacking girls from Finland who were off on a 3 week adventure. It made me proud that Dave and I had our backpacks on and were keeping pace. Today’s journal entry is in at least 2 posts. I can only put 2 videos per post and I have a few you may like. Tell me what you like so I can be on the lookout for topics of interest! 🌺. PS The “ Watercloset” at the Venice Train Station was 1 euro but it was clean with marble like walls. I took a photo for you. I did go in the men’s room by mistake unaware until I came out and some man raised his voice so I got out fast. It’s all Italian to me.Read more
