      Day 31: Lucca to Altopascio

      Yesterday in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

It was a much shorter walk today (20 km). Other than an extremely short stretch along a dirt path, the entire Way was sealed - I think I'm getting used to it. It was 19 degrees when I set out from Lucca around a quarter past seven, and surprisingly, as I expected it to be a hot day, I don't think the temperature got much more than that. If it did, I didn't really feel much heat. The standouts today were the smell of the jasmin that adorned quite a lot of the fences I walked past and the huge semi trailers that seemed to contuinually pass me along a particular section of the road! I just missed market morning as I arrived into town; all of the vendors were packing up.Read more

      Capri

      May 22 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

After another wonderful breakfast at the Hotel, we got the ferry to the Isle of Capri - 1.25 hrs. We eventually found where to buy shuttle tickets to Ana Capri, way up the mountain. We were crammed into this bus for the 30 min ride - totally unsafe, but fun!
Explored Ana Capri and the beautiful Church of St Michael with it's exquisite mosaic floor.
We then took the chair lift from Ana Capri to Mt. Solaro - 15 mins of thrill, peace and pure joy! The views from Mt Solaro are magnificent. We celebrated this wonderful day with the most expensive drinks we will ever consume - 2 x Aperol Spritz costing 38 Euro ($A58.58)! And then they expect a tip!
We got the 1715 ferry back to Amalfi arriving back at 1815. Back to the rooftop for more antipasto and red wine to finish a fabulous day .

      Firenze!

      May 22 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 68 °F

Day trip to Florence/Firenze. My first time to visit this fabled city. Will post photos from today on this footprint.

Took the high speed train there and back - only about 35 minutes and a top speed of 155 mph. Unfortunately, most of the trip is in tunnels and there wasn’t much Tuscan countryside to enjoy along the way.

Used some local transit to get around but still managed to get around 17,000 steps in visiting the Stibbert Museum, the replica statue of David (and some other statues), and checking out some plazas and churches, including the Roma Duomo as a final stop. Didn’t see all of Florence by any means but did what I could in about 5 hours.

Got back to Bologna just as a severe thunderstorm hit complete with lightning and thunder. Got a bit wet in the deluge getting back to our lodging but a great day overall. And not over yet as we are headed to have dinner with Ottavia. Yea!

      Ab jetzt: nach Norden

      May 22 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Wir werden von der lauten Brandung geweckt. Meterhohe Wellen!

Day 30: Lucca - rest day

      May 22 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

I've done the math, and my guidebook tells me that I have walked 589 km from my starting point (Echevennoz), and I now have 405 km to go until Rome. Therefore, I'm officially over 1/2 way! The Puccini concert last night was great. I sat in the front row and made friends with a man from Israel. He's recently been cycling in Portugal. The world is full of the most interesting people. Today, I was a lot more laid back, I barely walked at all. I climbed the Guinigi tower, which has seven oak trees planted at the top, and provides some lovely views of Lucca and the surrounding mountains. I'm sharing a photo of the Labyrinth that is carved into one of the pillars at the Cathedral here. It is a welcome to pilgrims and a symbol of the spiritual path that leads the believer to salvation. I also visited the Via Francigena museum. There was not much there, some good videos, but not much else.Read more

      Amalfi & Ravello

      May 21 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

We had breakfast in the most beautiful breakfast room imaginable this morning. Photos tomorrow!
We then got the Shuttle to Ravello - village high up the mountain between Amalfi and Minori. The Villa Rufolo stands on the edge of the cliff and provides spectacular views of the coastline.
We had a late lunch in the Piazza and then got the shuttle back to Amalfi. These bus drivers are so skilled - negotiating hairpin turns on narrow streets with oncoming traffic and often only centimetres to spare between the bus, other vehicles and cliffs.
Off to the supermarket for some wine and antipasto. Then to the Hotel Floridiana's Rooftop .... (to be continued!)

Hotel Floridiana rooftop wine & cheese

      May 21 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

After our extremely expensive meal last night, we decided to have a simple meal of wine and antipasto (from the local Supermarket) on the newly discovered rooftop of this glorious Hotel Floridiana!
We had been looking forward to celebrating Debbie Thiele's 70th as well. Happy 70th Deb! Little did we know we would find this lovely haven, without hordes of people. The vistas are stunning. We think we will return here tomorrow night - beats any restaurant we've been to!Read more

      In Neptuns Wohnzimmer 🔱

      May 21 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

      Traumhaft

      May 21 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Die letzte Pizza in Italien will genossen werde.

      Meine Antwort: Genau deswegen!

Day 29: Lucca - rest day

      May 21 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Lucca has really captured my heart. There is something very special about this place. The fact that the "old city" is still entirely encased by walls totally blows my mind. You see many fortified cities in Europe, but I have never seen fortifications so complete (and so maintained). The existing wall dates from the 1500s (the original bulit in the 1200s) and are so thick - everyone who lived here must have felt so protected and safe. Honestly, the word impregnable comes to mind. I did the tourist thing today and walked the 4km of walls. I was told it would take an hour, but it took me most of the day as I would dip back into the town to see some sight of interest - mostly churches. I climbed three church towers and found that my fear of heights has not completely gone! My pilgrim credential got me free entry into the Basilica (San Frediano) and the Duomo (house of God - I love that description): Saint Martin's Cathedral. I'm off to a Puccini concert tonight (Puccini's women); Lucca is his birth place. I feel reinvigorated today and so glad I chose this place for some rest days.Read more
