      Erster Radausflug in Osaka

      April 20, 2023 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

      Osaka city centre & market

      March 25 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

      1st stop: Osaka 😍
City full of life and restaurants. You will not starve yourself. Particularly, the market was very unique and street food amazing & cheap. Takoyaki is something you need to try if you like octopus. 🐙 For dinner we had Japanese BBQ at Gyu-Kaku Namba-sennichimae, where for CHF 25 per person we had all you can eat menu. Spectacular 😍

🐙 Per cena siamo stati a Gyu-Kaku Namba-sennichimae, BBQ giapponese, 25.- all you can eat. Buonissimo 😍

      Osaka cheesecake

      April 8, 2023 in Japan ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

      A quick visit to Dotonburi

      September 23, 2023 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

We planned to go to Dotonburi just for an hour or so because we were both quite tired... but we ended up staying for 4 hours because it was so cool! It's just a looooong street filled with shops.

There was a bridge that we walked over that was packed with people. There were LED billboards everywhere - it's like the Times Square of Osaka. There were street performers too.

I found a cool comic book store that sold comics for $3 each! I got one for Pokemon, Dragon Ball Z, and One Piece. We also found the world famous Pokemon Centre at the top of a 9-storey mall, and the Pokemon Cafe which sells Pokemon themed food.

I also bought a nice top from GU that has a Kuribo on the front, and some socks with Blue Eyes White Dragon on!

Then we got some Japanese cheesecake which is super fluffy. The difference with this one is that it has raisins at the bottom for an extra bit of sweetness. I think it's delicious, Frankie doesn't like the raisin part.

      Last day in Osaka!

      September 28, 2023 in Japan ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Our final afternoon in Osaka was spent shopping around Ebisu-Bashi Bridge and Dotonburi. I snagged a couple cheeky purchases - a fancy Lego set of the famous Japanese "wave", and I bought a Nintendo Switch!

I had sold mine earlier in the year because I didn't use it much and wanted a bit of extra cash... but now, after visiting Super Nintendo World and riding the rides, I want to play the Super Mario games again.

So I purchased a console, two games, a case, thumb sticks, and a screen protector, all for about $560. In NZ, the console itself is priced at $620. So waaaaaay cheaper to buy here. I wasn't going to at first until Frankie pointed out what a bargain it was.

Then we went home to pack. We only have 25kg allowed in our suitcases each and we have done so much shopping that we were way over that. We had to cut some of our unnecessary stuff to make the weight limit. Extra baggage is $170 for an additional 5kg so we definitely don't want to have to pay for that! Our bags are currently sitting around 24kg each to allow for scales inconsistencies, then we have shoved all our snacks and lollies into our carry-on luggage. If we are overweight and need to dump any kgs, we can easily dump some snacks and lollies at the airport.

Once the bags were packed, we went off to dinner for our last night in Osaka. Ramen and fried chicken to round off our Japanese leg of the trip - no better way.

Off to Phuket tomorrow. Hope the weather's good!

      Tagesausflug nach Osaka

      October 5, 2023 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

      November 20, 2023 in Japan ⋅ 🌙 12 °C

      Osaka

      March 25 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

On our way to Osaka, we tested Divya’s theory on the Suica cards. We decided to turn off the express travel mode on the iPhone wallet settings. Purva and I had a strong hunch that this time it will work, and it did. We had unlocked a major achievement. After reaching Osaka, our first stop was the Osaka castle, another destination which was nice, but would be extremely stunning if the Sakura trees had already bloomed, which they had not. We then headed to Osaka’s biggest happening district - Dotonbori (by the river - Dotonbori). We randomly bumped into my cousin Shashank and his wife Sadhvi (who are travelling in Japan during the same time) in front of the famous Glico billboard. We then walked around the bustling market lit with neon lights all over and tried some street food - Takoyaki, before sitting down in a restaurant in Dotonbori for some delicious Okonomiyaki - Osaka’s speciality. After a hearty dinner, we headed back to Kyoto. We first got onto the wrong train (Thunderbird, which requires a special ticket) before changing trains mid way and accidentally separating the group because the doors closed before everyone could get on. Everyone still eventually managed to get back to the hotel easily and within minutes of each other.Read more

      day 4 - Osaka

      November 17, 2023 in Japan ⋅ 🌬 16 °C

      Delicious Dotonburi

      November 17, 2019 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

We all agreed that Dotonburi was like Osaka's New York Times Square, or Tokyo's Shinjuku. It was full of neon lights. According to a magazine article, Osaka is Japan's kitchen, and one must try to eat until you are either bankrupt or too full to continue. That's our kind of challenge.

So we had some Takoyaki (whose shop played a very catchy tune while we queued) and later on some sticky rice balls. These were enveloped with sweet soy sauce and coated with either roasted rice powder or matcha powder. My preference was absolute--the roasted rice powder coating elevated this delicacy above the rest. We also saw plenty of quirky signs in the establishments' attempts to catch the interest of passing visitors.

We decided to take the train home. As we neared our accommodation, I thought I caught a scent that reminded me of woodfire or burning charcoal - something that reminded me of Lola Soteng. It was an out of place aroma in a highly urbanised area where everything was electronic. So I knew that she was watching over us on this trip.

We enjoyed our evening cuppa whilst debriefing before turning in for the night. Turns out we clocked in about 16000 steps this day.
