    January 1 in Mexico ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

It’s tradition to go to the beach in Mexico and watch the sunrise. I only made it to the roof and I could see the beach so that should be close enough. 😃. In case you didn’t make it to see the sunrise here you go. ❤️

    A bit of Yucatan

    October 21, 2018 in Mexico ⋅ 🌧 29 °C

First days of traveling by myself. It's not that scary after all :) people were very friendly helping me find the right buses, I explored a bit of Cancun and Playa del Carmen and ended up swimming with nurse sharks. I had two days of mind-blowing diving in cenotes which I'll always remember as one of the most incredible things I've done. And I met the group with whom I'll spend the next two weeks traveling that could hardly be more multicultural. So far so good!Read more

A lazy day in the sun

    January 8 in Mexico ⋅ 🌧 27 °C

Our 1st 'day off' of the trip! We sauntered round this busy resort and then spent a couple of hours on the beach swimming and reading.
Jo had told us about a restaurant she and Phil had liked when they were here about 4 years ago so we tracked it down and had probably the best meal of the trip so far. Ceviche for staters then a fish stuffed pita and finally a plate of delicious tempura prawns. A bit pricey but well worth it!
It's off to the island of Cosumel tomorrow on the ferry and after just one night there we will be boarding our cruise ship. Watch this space as they say.

    Wheels away

    January 7 in Mexico ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Our last day with wheels started with a swim in the Caribbean. Warm but very seaweedy! Then breakfast with a view. Our next stop was Tulum Mayan site which is a coastal site so much more open than the jungle one yesterday. It was odd (but very nice!) to stroll round ancient ruins in the company of bikini clad young ladies!
We pushed on to Playa del Carman, checked in to our hotel and then returned the car. As we strolled back it started raining and forced us to seek shelter in a bar where Chris tried her first daiquiri. We ate out at a pizza place as it was just across the road.
No photos of that interesting stuff - just the ruins!

    Hilton Playa Del Carmen

    April 12 in Mexico ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

Very pleased with the hotel. The room is very nice. Nice large room, large bathroom. The hotel itself is also very nice. There are many restaurants onsite (Marie Marie, Pelicanos, Asiana, Spice) that we can dine at for free as part of the all-inclusive package. Plus many other places to get snacks and drinks. Early impressions are that the food is good, but not great. We'll probably take advantage of the free breakfasts, lucnhes, snacks, etc... but dine out on several nights to get some of the local cuisine.

The beach has cabanas that we can use (first come, first serve). The beach itself is not great. Pretty narrow. The water is rough, so not seeing many people actually getting into the water. The pool is a bit rowdy (all-inclusive crowd). It will be interesting to see if the environment is different Monday - Friday as opposed to the weekend. However, Lisa and I aren't big water people to begin with, and we've found the beach cabanas easy to get as most of the people are drawn to the pool party.

The hotel staff is incredibly nice and helpful (similar to our experience at the Hilton resort in Cabo).

Saturday, April 13, Playa Del Carmen

    April 13 in Mexico ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

Our first full day in Playa. We ate breakfast at the all-inclusive buffet, Spice. It was good (what you expect from a hotel buffet breakfast). Then we hit the hotel gym for a workout - very nice gym for a hotel. They have some interesting equipment including suspension trainers and pilates reformers (may need to sign up for a class sometime this week).

We relaxed on the beach most of the day under a cabana. These weren't hard to get on the beach as most people were congregated at the pool for the college frat-like atmosphere.

For dinner, we ate at La Parilla just up the road from the hotel. This restaurant was recommended by the driver from the airport. The food was fantastic. I had a very good margarita (made with fresh lime juice - no mix, yay). I had a tortilla soup starter that was fantastic (Lisa had a Lime soup that was also very good). For an entree, I had their Cochinita Pilbil which was out of this world. I'll have dreams about the Pibil!!!

    Playa del Carmen

    December 31, 2018 in Mexico ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Last morning in Havana and we were all SO sad to leave. It’s been the most amazing and perfect part of the trip and nobody was ready for that to end.

We decided to forgo the very atmospheric - but so, so bland buffet breakfast at the hotel in favor of an alfresco brekkie near the square we stumbled on yesterday.

Today was magnificent- slightly cooler than yesterday but with a clear blue sky and no humidity.

Breakfast was simple- eggs, bacon, coffee, juice. But we loved being outside in the middle of the street, listening to live music in the sunshine.

All too soon it was time to go to the airport - Cancun bound.

It was a very bumpy descent and upon landing we quickly discovered why- it was pouring with rain. Still warm, but a thick grey cloud covered the coastal city and we hurried to our transport getting soaked on the way.

Playa del Carmen is about a half hour drive from Cancun and it was difficult to see much. But the Grand Hyatt was beautiful - a very new resort which has been magnificently fitted out. We are all in one very spacious room with 2 queen beds. We took a quick look around in the dark and could see everything being prepared for tomorrow night’s New Year’s Eve party.

By 7.30 - having reconnected with the world through social media and phone calls, we were hungry. (After all lunch was a packet of Pringles and a Toblerone)...

We headed to the main strip - 5th Ave and found it teeming with life - big chain stores jostled for attention next to souvenir shops and tex-mex cuisine alongside Italian versus steakhouses.

Before we had time to choose, the heavens opened again and we ducked inside a nearby Texas BBQ restaurant. Everyone was happy- nachos, tacos and a Texas bbq burger. Huge American-sized portions with a Mexican influence.

And then suddenly everyone was exhausted. We went for a short stroll along the avenue before heading back for the last sleep of 2018.
