      Delightful Dunedin

      Our ship docked this morning at Port Chalmers on the mainland of NZ South Island. This was where Scottish settlers first arrived in 1848 on the ship John Wickliffe. Rather than go on an official tour, we took the local bus the 13k into Dunedin - New Zealand’s oldest city - given the Celtic name for Edinburgh by the early Scottish settlers. It enjoys the status of being the furthest city in the world from London.

      A highlight for me was visiting Dunedin Railway Station with its ornate Flemish Renaissance-style architecture and gorgeous Minton tiles on the inside - apparently this is the most photographed building in New Zealand. Scottish names and influences are everywhere in this area - St Kilda, Portobello, Musselburgh - the museum even had a preserved cable car going to Maryhill!

      We enjoyed a walk round the central Octogon area, featuring a pride-of-place statue of Rabbie Burns, and the excellent Art Gallery which included interactive exhibits involving hammocks and free tea making. At the Chinese Garden we had more tea and dumplings (although these were not as good as Alice’s mum’s homemade ones). We finished up at the extensive and fabulous Otago Settlers Museum - almost as good as Oban’s Museum yesterday - and this one was free! 😂

      On our departure from Port Chalmers, the ship passed an albatross colony, and there was great excitement as almost all passengers, including zimmers and wheelchairs, clambered up to the Crow’s Nest bar for a glimpse of the creatures. I have to say they looked much like the seagulls at Largs who steal your fish supper.      Read more

      Dunedin

      Heute stand eine einstündige Strandwanderung und ein Städtetrip auf dem Tagesplan. Wäre der Weg zum Meer flach gewesen, hätte der gesamte Weg vielleicht 10 Minuten gedauert. Die vielen Höhenmeter jedoch benötigten viel Zeit und Muße 🥵 Selbst Nora hat sich trotz Erkältung tapfer gehalten! 👍
      Wie ihr auf den Fotos (auf denen wir uns in wahnsinnig eleganten Touri-Posen üben) seht, war es die Anstrengung definitiv zu 100% wert.
      Danach ging es in die Stadt, heutige Ausbeute:
      -2 Cappys
      -1 Fleecepulli
      -1 Chiller-Tshirt
      -1 kg Brause 😍
      - saure Würmer 😍
      Zufällig fuhr uns dann noch die deutsche Post am anderen Ende der Welt über den Weg.
      Den tollen Tag haben wir abends beim gemeinsamen Burgermachen mit Annas Freunden aus Hamburg, die wir in Dunedin aufgegabelt hatten, ausklingen lassen.😊      Read more

      Nu är vi i Dunedin!

      I morse tog vi inrikesflyget från Auckland till Dunedin, som ligger på södra Sydön. Efter en 2 timmars flygresa var vi framme och hämtade ut vår bil, en Kia suv, från Thrifty Car. 30 min senare var vi i Dunedin och checkade in på Quest i en ”studio apartment”. Centralt och ett fräscht rum med badrum och ett pyttelitet kök.

      Det är ingen idé att packa upp, vi ska bara stanna 2 nätter, utan efter att ha öppnat väskorna gav vi oss ut på upptäcktsfärd i staden.

      Det positiva med Dunedin är att det finns mycket att se inom ett väldigt litet område. Det finns många byggnader som härstammar från stadens glansdagar, under 1860-talets guldrusch, då Dunedin var landets kommersiella centrum.

      Vi vandrade runt och tittade på alla fina byggnader, bl a på St Pauls Cathedral (enda kyrkan i landet med ett välvt stentak ) som ligger vid The Octagon, som är ett åtta-kantigt torg i centrala Dunedin.

      Sen styrde vi stegen mot Dunedin järnvägsstation. Vilken byggnad, nämnd som en av de vackraste byggnaderna på Nya Zeeland! Dessutom den byggnad som är mest fotograferad! Vi hade läst att det bästa sättet att uppleva järnvägsstationen (!) var att boka in sig på en tur med ett tåg. Sagt och gjort, vi köpte biljetter till en tur genom Taieri Gorge, en tur på 4,5 Tim från Dunedin västerut till trakter där man grävde guld under andra hälften av 1800-talet.

      Vilken tågresa! Vi valde att sitta i en ”heritage” vagn, en gammaldags tågvagn av trä men med bekväma säten😊. Det skakade och lät väldigt mycket 😫 men vilken upplevelse! Vi hade egna säten inne i kupén men stor del av tiden stod vi på området mellan vagnarna (vad det nu heter....) Där var upplevelsen ännu häftigare. Men visst var det läskigt när tåget saktade ner och körde på smala järnbroar😱! Eller när tåget körde in i tunnlar som var så smala att vi knappt trodde att det skulle få plats.
      Vi färdades från Dunedins slätter förbi skogstäckta stora kullar, genom enorma bergsklyftor, över skrangliga järnbroar till ett fantastiskt hedlandskap. Vi såg får, kor, hästar och ett och annat hus men framförallt en enastående natur. Efter 4,5 Tim var vi tillbaka i Dunedin. Vilken fantastisk resa!

      Nu är det lördag kväll här på Nya Zeeland. Vad gör man i Dunedin en lördag kväll. Tja... nattlivet verkar vara lika pulserande som i Trelleborg😂 så vi köpte vars en bit färdiglagad lasagne, lite sallad och lite gott Nya Zeeländskt vin. Lasagnen värmde vi i micron på vårt rum och nu sitter vi vid matbordet och myser till det😊. Vi kämpar med jetlaggen (fast det går bättre än förväntat) så det blir tidig sänggång även i kväll😴. I morgon väntar nya upplevelser!

      Zurück an der Küste angekommen, konnte uns Dunedin (abgesehen von den Fish'n'Chips) nicht wirklich begeistern. Am Weg dort hin hatten wir mit dem kleinen Küstenort Oamaru und dem Moeraki Boulders Beach zwei kurze Zwischenstopps eingelegt. Am Abend entdeckten wir aber noch den netten Vorort St Clair und eine beeindruckende Abendstimmung am Tunnel Beach.Read more

      Dunedin 🏢

      🇩🇪 Nach ein paar sonnigen Tagen gab es zur Abwechslung mal etwas Regen. Dies hat uns jedoch nicht daran gehindert die Stadt inkl. Umgebung zu erkunden. Morgens sind wir zur Spitze der Otago Peninsula gefahren, wo sich das Royal Albatross Center befindet 🕊️. Dies ist der einzige Ort auf dem Festland, wo sich Albatrosse niederlassen (i.d.R. passiert dies nur auf kleineren Inseln weit weg von den Menschen). Eine Tour haben wir wegen dem starken Wind, der Eiseskälte und dem Regen schliesslich ausgelassen (ein paar Albatrosse haben wir trotzdem fliegen sehen). Im Anschluss sind wir durch die Hügel der Peninsula zurückgefahren in Richtung Stadtzentrum. Dort befindet sich die Baldwin Street, die steilste Strasse auf der ganzen Welt (ja, wer hätte gedacht, dass diese in Neuseeland zu finden ist...). Die Strasse ist 330 Meter lang und an der steilsten Stelle beträgst die Steigung 35%, d.h. jede 2.86 Meter, die man horizontal fahren würde, ändert sich die Höhe um 1 Meter. Auf dem Foto erkennt man die Steigung nur bedingt, mit unserem Dream Sleeper haben wir die Auffahrt nur knapp geschafft 😉. Während des Rest des Tages waren wir zu Fuss im Stadtzentrum unterwegs und haben uns am Abend etwas Feines im Restaurant gegönnt 😍😋.

      P.s. übernachtet haben wir bei einem Ehepaar in einer Airbnb-Wohnung. Ein Grund, weshalb wir das Zimmer dort gebucht haben, waren die drei Katzen die dort leben. Harry, Henry und *** (Name vergessen). 🐈‍⬛😸🐾

      🇮🇹 Dopo alcune giornate di sole, è arrivata la pioggia. Tuttavia, questo non ci ha impedito di esplorare la città e i suoi dintorni. Al mattino ci siamo diretti verso la punta della penisola di Otago, dove si trova il Royal Albatross Centre 🕊️. Questo è l'unico posto sulla terraferma in cui gli albatros si stabiliscono (di solito questo avviene solo su isole più piccole e lontane dalle persone). Alla fine abbiamo deciso di tralasciare il tuor sul posto, questo a causa del forte vento, del freddo gelido e della pioggia (abbiamo comunque visto volare alcuni albatros). In seguito siamo tornati indietro attraverso le colline della penisola verso il centro della città. Lì si trova Baldwin Street, la strada più ripida del mondo (sì, chi l'avrebbe mai detto che si trova in Nuova Zelanda...). La strada è lunga 330 metri e nel punto più ripido la pendenza è del 35%, vale a dire che ogni 2,86 metri percorsi in orizzontale, l'altitudine cambia di 1 metro. La pendenza si vede solo in parte nella foto, con il nostro Dream Sleeper siamo riusciti a fare la salita giusto così😉. Durante il resto della giornata abbiamo passeggiato per il centro città e alla sera abbiamo mangiato in un ristorante 😍😋.

      P.s. Abbiamo alloggiato da una coppia in un appartamento Airbnb. Uno dei motivi per cui abbiamo prenotato quella camera erano i tre gatti che vivono lì. Harry, Henry e *** (nome dimenticato). 🐈😸🐾      Read more

      Dunedin

      Étonnamment Dunedin est la 5em plus grande ville du monde en termes de superficie. La population est majoritairement étudiante mais je ne suis pas d'humeur à aller en boîte, je suis plus chaud pour parcourir la ville et ses musées. Je traverse la ville et sa mignonne architecture, sa gare, une église, une cathédrales et 3 musées dont un qui recèle d'étranges artefacts divers et variés comme des sculptures en os d'animaux. Je termine en haut du Mont d'à côté pour voir le soleil se coucher sur une mer de nuages.Read more

      Am Straßenrand & Abendessen in Dunedin

      Nach einem ausgiebigen Spaziergang durch den Schlosspark beschlossen wir nicht im Castle zu Abend zu essen, sondern wieder die kurvige Strecke runter nach Dunedin zu fahren.
      Dunedin ist ein quirliges Städtchen, von der Einwohnerzahl vergleichbar in etwa mit Fürth. Im viktorianischen Baustil sind die meisten öffentlichen Gebäude und Kirchen errichtet.
      In der Innenstadt sitzen die Gäste meist noch draußen und aus jeder Bar hören wir eine andere Musik.
      Wir entscheiden uns für eine Brauerei mit einem Restaurant mit Wandbildern und Fotografien aus dem Irland der frühen 20er Jahre, sehr heimelig und ein äußerst zuvorkommendes Servicepersonal, das passt als Abschluß zu unserem heutigen Tag.      Read more

      Exploring Dunedin

      First up today I walked the Pineapple Track (about 5km) which overlooked Dunedin. It was nice and sunny so I walked a little further to the top of Flagstaff.

      Schiefe Häuser in Dunedin

      Schnell waren wir wieder an der Ostküste angekommen. Bei einem Spaziergang durch Dunedin entschieden wir uns spontan für einen Kinobesuch. Anscheinend war der Film ein absoluter Geheimtipp, genauso wie das unverhofft salzige Popcorn. Dunedin scheint eine junge Stadt zu sein, mit vielen Künstlerinnen und Künstlern, die das Stadtbild prägen.

      Nach einem kurzen Plausch mit anderen Reisenden hatten wir erfahren, dass die Stadt die steilste Straße der Welt beherbergt. Und siehe da: eine weitere Anlaufstelle für Touri-Busse. Bei den schiefen Häusern aber auch kein Wunder.      Read more

      Dunedin

      Dunedin (pronounced Duh-nee-din) is a nice Scottish town, of course we haven't just physically moved across the globe to Scotland but we are there in spirit. It is refreshing to wander around a town with old looking buildings.

      On the road to Dunedin we first stopped to see the Moeraki boulders. The pictures don't do them justice but when we walked from one end of the beach to the other and stumbled upon those in the middle it felt utterly out of place. These boulders are massive and we still wonder how or why they're there. After having a good coffee while looking at them we continue along the road to see some fur seals. There is a whole colony living by a lighthouse. It was nice to see some more of them lazily enjoying the sunny day.

      The next day, we didn't mimic the lazy seals but instead we had a busy day in the town of Dunedin. Starting with a tasty breakfast we then follow by visiting the Chinese gardens. We weren't expecting much and we found ourselves within a very peaceful complex even if it was just by the main road. New Zealand and in particular the Otago region where we are have a big history with Chinese communities coming here to work on finding gold. They in fact sent out official invitations for groups to come and take up the pick axe. This gardens here are a reminder of this link.

      Next, we visit the settlers museum. As its name suggests it is about all settlers in the Otago region. Starting with the Maori and finishing with the Scottish. It was interesting if a little repetitive given we have learnt a fair bit in the other New Zealand museums, but they had a couple historic features that where fun to take a picture of.

      That was our morning and now on to our afternoon! We start with the botanical gardens (Armelle can't miss any botanical garden) to see some flowers and some trees. Then onto the Otago peninsula with our little car. This is a little bit outside Dunedin and we a very much back into country side roads and villages even so close to town. We stop at New Zealand's only castle. We had to see it! We actually visited only the castle gardens and they were amazing. Full of native flora and a lot of explanations on them.

      Arriving at the end of the peninsula we stopped to try to see some albatrosses. There are tours to see them but they were fully booked so we thought we'd take our chances and have a glimpse from an observation deck. To our surprise the royal albatrosses did put on quite a show! They kept flying by quite close and then turning around so we could see them perfectly! It is impressive to see these big birds in the air. In photos it is difficult to understand the scale of it but we tried to give you a couple of hints. We tried again to see some penguins but it is not the season to see them and they were either very well hidden or not there. We managed to spot a couple of seals again though!

      After this eventful day we enjoyed a tasty Turkish dinner followed by an amazing ice cream, we didn't fancy any traditional scottish food 😝      Read more
