      Heute Morgen ging es für mich weiter in den nördlichen Zipfel Neuseelands, die so ziemlich einzige Region, die ich bisher noch nicht gesehen habe. Die Reise habe ich nochmals mit Stray angetreten, einem Busunternehmen, mit dem ich vorher schon einige Male gereist bin.
      Nach einigen Komplikationen - unser Bus hatte irgendein technisches Problem, sodass wir ihn austauschen mussten - sind wir Richtung Bay of Islands, einer Region an der Ostküste des Nordzipfels gefahren.
      Unterwegs haben wir in einem Kauri-Wald angehalten, wo wir wieder einmal unsere Schuhe an einer Station putzen mussten, bevor wir eine kleine Wanderung durch den Wald machen durften. Unser Busfahrer "Socks" hat versucht, uns so viel wie möglich zu erklären. So hat er uns beispielsweise erzählt, dass die riesigen Kauri-Bäume seit 1960 staatlich geschützt sind, weil damals nur noch 4% des ursprünglichen Bestands erhalten war. Kürzlich ist nun eine Kauri-Krankheit "dieback disease" ausgebrochen, die dazu führen könnte, dass in zwanzig bis dreißig Jahren die Kauris komplett ausgesterben, wenn sie nicht unter Kontrolle gebracht wird. Deshalb ist es so wichtig, dass Schuhe von Fremdkörpern gereinigt werden, die Wurzeln durch Holzbrücken zu schonen und auch die Zerstörung durch Possums und andere Tiere einzudämmen. Zudem sind die Kauri-Bäume für die Maori heilig, da sie glauben, dass sie mit ihren mächtigen Baumkronen den Himmel vom Herunterstürzen hindern. Grund genug, die mächtigen Riesen zu schützen!
      Am frühen Nachmittag sind wir in Paihia angekommen, wo ich mich mit Laura getroffen habe, die mit einem anderen Bus ebenfalls hierher gefahren ist. Zusammen sind wir von einem kleinen Hafen aus auf eine gegenüberliegende Halbinsel gefahren, um die frühere Hauptstadt Neuseeland Russell zu besuchen - auch wenn das kaum vorstellbar ist, die Stadt ist ziemlich klein.
      Nach einer kurzen Bootsfahrt hat uns erstmal ein aufgeregter Haufen am Hafen vor Russell erwartet: Ein Hai ist direkt am Steg entlanggeschwommen. Ich hatte einen kleinen Katzenhai erwartet, aus dem Wasser ist allerdings ein delfingroßer Hai aufgetaucht. Damit habe ich beschlossen, hier definitiv nicht ins Meer zu gehen.
      Auch wenn ich die Stadt Paihia mit lauter kleinen Läden, einem langen Sandstrand und dem Hafen total schön fand, konnte mich Russell noch viel mehr begeistern. Das Zentrum des kleine Städtchens ist sehr überschaubar und ist direkt am Hafen. Hier gab es süße Geschäfte und viele nobel aussehende Restaurants. Rundherum gab es fast ausschließlich wunderschöne Strandhäuser und Villas. Um die Stadt herum kann man am Strand spazieren gehen, durch die engen Straßen schlendern oder auf einen kleinen Hügel wandern, von wo man einen tollen Ausblick auf die Bucht vor Russell hat, wie Laura und ich es gemacht haben.
      Auf der Rückfahrt mit dem Boog konnten wir einen wunderschönen Sonnenuntergang erleben, bevor wir zurück in Paihia angekommen sind. Hier haben wir meine Straybusgruppe zu einem gemeinsamen Grillabend wiedergetroffen und mit dem Engländer Oliver bei einem Quizabend teilgenommen.      Read more

      Bay of Islands

      Hey,

      derzeit bin ich Paihia, einem kleinem süßen Küstenort in der Bay of Islands. In der näheren Umgebung sind die ersten Siedler angelandet und die Maori haben hier früher gelebt. Neben der ersten Hauptstadt Neuseelands, gibt es hier viele weitere "geschichtsträchtige Orte". Dafür, dass Winter ist, fühlt man sich ehr wie in den Tropen, es gibt Palmen und tagsüber bekommt man schneller einen Sonnenbrand statt Erfrierungen. Es ist ein wunderschöner Ort um (nach Auckland) ein wenig zur Ruhe zu kommen. In den vergangenen 2 Tagen habe ich mit Adam (UK) 2 tolle Touren (Walks) gemacht und die Umgebung erkundet.Read more

      Neuseeland, wir sind da.

      Gestern hab ich nichts mehr geschrieben, wir waren so kaputt von dem Flug.. dann noch die Zeitumstellung..konnten nur knapp 3 Stunden die Augen zumachen. Naja, wie dem auch sei, wir sind angekommen und nach anfänglichen Schwierigkeiten läuft es hier auch echt gut zur Zeit 😅 Wir haben schon viel gesehen. Unser Reiseführer Seagull ist ein recht lustiger Typ. Noch besteht unsere Truppe aus 5 Personen, ein Mädel von UK und noch ein älteres Ehepaar aus Deutschland.
      Leider Regent es hier, es sind 19 Grad und die Zeit geht 10 Stunden vor.
      Wir haben uns sehr, ja wirklich sehr alte Bäume angeschaut. Über 800 Jahre (s.Bild) und dann gibt es noch einen der noch viel älter ist, 3500 Jahre. zu diesen Bäumen gibt es eine Legende die besagt, dass wenn man stirbt die Seele in die Baumkrone zieht. Und genau diese Legende hat sich der berühmte James Cameron geschnappt und in einen seiner wohl berühmtesten Filme eingebaut.. in den Film..Avatar.. hier werden wohl öfter mal Filme gedreht 😅 aber das ist kein Wunder, es sieht hier aus wie im Märchen.. alles grün, Täler, Berge, Strand und Meer.. ❤️
      Einen Wasserfall haben wir uns auch angeschaut.. das war so toll.. wie einem ganz feine Wassertröpfchen ins Gesicht gerieselt sind. Bevor es dann in unsere Unterkunft ging haben wir uns noch eine ganz berühmte öffentliche Toilette angeschaut.. 😂 jaja ihr habt richtig gelesen.. diese Toilette wurde von dem Künstler Hundertwasser entworfen,kurz bevor er starb. So nun ruhen wir uns aus und holen etwas Schlaf nach, da es regnet können wir nicht wirklich viel machen.. 🤔 wollen wahrscheinlich auch nicht so recht. Heute Abend gibt es ein BBQ und dann wird schön geschlemmt.. hoff ich 😅      Read more

      Jour 6: Paihia - Russel - Voilier, NZ

      Kia Ora,

      Aujourd'hui, une journée en deux temps... il a plu toute la nuit et avec très forte intensité 🌧🌧🌧🌧🌧🌧🌧🌧💦💦💦💦💦💦💦☂️☂️☂️☂️☂️. Nos fenêtres de chambre étant ouvertes, on s'est réveillé à plusieurs reprises. Malgré la pluie, on s'organise quand même pour la journée de voilier, le gars devait nous téléphoner si jamais c'était annulé et on avait toujours pas reçu d'appel, donc on avait un espoir... On prépare notre stock de la journée, on va déjeuner dans une petite "bakery" qu'on avait vu la veille et on s'en va au kiosque du Tucker Thompson ⛵️. Ce qui devait arriver arriva, le tour de voilier de la journée est annulé. Par contre, le temps semblait s'éclaircir et comme on était vendredi, il y avait une sortie de voilier de 16h à 18h, beaucoup moins long qu'une journée mais quand même on avait un chance de faire du voilier.

      Ce qui devait arrivé arriva, le temps s'éclairci en effet 😀... Alors on en profite durant la journée pour aller visiter Russel, le village d'en face et le lieu de départ du voilier. Cependant ce village est grand comme deux mains, alors la visite fut de courte durée. On s'assoie sur un banc pour attendre l'heure de départ, juste à côté de nous il y avait une jeune fille qui habitait le même backpacker que nous et donc la conversation commence... elle est ici pour six mois et elle en profite pour visiter tout en travaillant de temps en temps, elle fera entre autre la récolte de kiwis pour un mois. Léa va poursuivre sa route vers Hamilton donc on la met en contact avec Silvia. Qui sait, on va peut-être revoir Léa de nouveau chez Silvia dans quelques jours. La température tient bon et il fait un beau soleil.

      L'heure du départ arrive et croyez le ou pas il fait toujours beau. Nous sommes sur le voilier et c'est vraiment agréable, on aime beaucoup ça le voilier. Comme vous pouvez voir sur les photos, il y a du monde qui mette la main à la pâte et travaille très fort pour monter les voiles et d'autre qui relaxe tranquillement avec un verre de vin et qui joue au photographe pour immortaliser le moment de monsieur!

      Finalement, on termine cette belle journée, en se faisant un repas au lodge et en continuant la conversation avec Léa.

      Jour 5: Aucklund - Paihai, NZ

      Kia Ora,

      Un autre réveil sur Auckland, une autre journée de pluie. C'est notre première journée de prise de possession de la voiture de location, une petite marche de 5-6 minutes de l'hôtel. Nous avions réservé une superbe Toyota Corolla mais il n'en restait plus... nous avons eu une Nissan Qashqai, un peu plus gros pour le même prix. Je n'avais pas réservé de GPS et la fille nous indique qu'il en avait plus, la face nous a tombé un peu 😂. Finalement, elle nous en a fourni un. Afin de pratiquer la conduite à gauche, on devait aller faire un petit trek au Mont Eden à 15 minutes de voiture mais étant donné la température, nous avons décidé d'aller directement à Paihai dans le nord de l'ile du nord, trois heures de route. Pour une première expérience, ça très bien été... mais, il y a toujours un mais, comme on s'y connait pas beaucoup, on a suivi le GPS, ben oui il nous a fait passer par des très petites rues dans la campagne... même des routes en gravier... Finalement on s'est bien rendu à destination accompagné de quelques sacres 😈🐂🐄🐑

      Paihai est un très beau petit village de sport nautique, notre backpacker est situé juste en face de l'eau. C'est très bien, par contre un peu petit au dire de Julie. Nous avons visité un peu les alentours et vérifier si notre tour de voilier a toujours lieu pour demain, car ici non plus il ne fait pas très beau. En jasant avec les gens du ⛵️, ils nous disent que nous sommes les seuls à avoir réservé pour demain, on souhaite de tout coeur que la température soit des nôtres pour ce tour de voilier. Il parait qu'il y a d'autres canadiens qui étaient intéressés, on va voir demain matin ce qui va arriver.

      Afin de passer le temps pour le reste de la journée, un peu de magasinage. Devinez qui a dépensé en premier? Michel... il a fait le premier achat 🎩, il était parti sans chapeau et lui qui a pas de cheveux en plus. En nous promenant dans le village, nous avons entendu des gens parler français, en jasant avec eux, nous avons appris qu'il y a un bateau de croisière qui a accosté avec plusieurs québécois à bord.

      On a écrit ce blogue dans la salle de repos du lodge, il y avait une dizaine de personnes mais le monde est discret, pas beaucoup d'échange entre les gens. Il y a quelqu'un qui vient de faire brûler son souper, sentez-vous l'odeur? On va terminer cette journée dans un restaurant de ribs, ça l'air bon.

      Faites qu'il fasse beau demain afin de partir en voilier.

      Day 5

      First day in Paihia!

      Today I woke up at 545 and since my bus was going to be leaving two hours after that I decided to just stay up and get ready for the day. On my way to the bus stop I finally got a shot of the skytower and what a beautiful sight it is!

      The bus ride north was beautiful. The hillside was so lush and green and I actually got to watch sunrise over the green hills from the bus which was spectacular! The hillside reminded me a bit of Scotland and Ireland combined with BC which was a nice reminder of Europe and home.

      I checked in at noon cause they had my room ready early which was fantastic 😊 Kirsty at the front desk was beyond helpful in helping my plan my next three days here! But sunday and Monday are going to be a surprise!

      After making myself a lunch I decided to do a 4 hour hike (who am I!?). Early in the walk i saw an old couple with two dogs playing on the shore. I couldnt help but hope that would somehow be me one day. About an hour into the hike I stumbled upon a group of seven who were doing the kiwi experience (which is likr a tour group across new zealand for people like myself) so I ended up just tagging along with them. After another hour or so of hiking we finally came to Haruru Falls which was a modest water fall 😊 given that I've never seen a waterfall before I was more than impressed and happy. I sat on the edge and felt the water breeze through my feet just before falling off the edge. It was an absolutely incredible feeling! I also brought myself a salad lunch so I had A picnic on the edge of the waterfall (pretty freaking sweet if you ask me!) After a long two hour hike back I checked back into the hostel and confirmed and paid for my activities for the following two days.

      After a long (much needed) shower I vegged out on my phone for a while. I booked my bus from paihia to Rotorua for later this week as well as three days accommodation at what should be a pretty amazing hostel I'm rotorua so I'm pretty excited!

      Then around 830 I finally went out searching for food. I found a place called thirty30 on trip advisor that was supposed to be cheap and tasty so I went there. It turned out there was a live band playing there so that was a lovely surprise. In their first intermission Kat and Nick came and introduced themselves. Kat was from Ireland and nick from the south island. Both probably late thirties. Super great and friendly. Oh I forgot to mention.... I was pretty much the whole audience for the night. By 11 the boss Tony started joining in with some pretty rad dance moves which obviously I had to join in for. The only thing that would have made it better would have been a good ole two step but the few girls I asked were certainly not interested. I'm pretty certain it's not a thing here so it was slightly awkward.

      On my walk back to the hostel I chose to walk along the shoreline. Had some Ed Sheeran playing lightly in my ears with the sound of the tide acting as a steady relaxed heartbeat in the background. What a way to end the night! Anyways it's about midnight now and I just got home. What a great night out and a fantastic first day I'm Paihia!

      Rough day but still so happy :)

      Okay so quite a day here!

      Decided to take a sailing tour of the islands. It was pretty beautiful. We spent two hours on one of the islands. I met a guy named phillip and we hung out for most of the day so we were Terrence and Phillip for the day haha.

      Our captain was Dave from Florida. Well technically from Florida but from the age of 9 his family and him travelled the world sailing. Like he legit did school on the sailboat. They even had a piano on board for music. Pretty incredible story. Dave gave me quite the flack for asking about sharks. And as you may have guessed...no i wasnt attacked by a shark because the NZ sharks really dont bother humans which is more than okay by me.

      On the island we borrow the two kayaks and explored a bit. Water started to get into the kayak so i put took my phone put of my pocket and put it on my lap. That was a mistake. As i attempted to get pulled back on board i forgot about my phone and just like that it fell into the water. I kinda just went into shock and watched it sink. By the time i realized what had happened it was too deep for me to feel comfortable going in. After a minute or so of panic this Austrian guy who looked and sounded like Chris Hemsworth (seriously) stepped up and was like Ill get it for you. So he dived in and about five minutes later he was able to find it and bring it to shore. I asked his name and he said mike. I was like are you kidding me!? Another Mike has saved my ass haha. My phone was still working at that point so theres hope. After that I turned it off.

      When we got back to shore i bought rice and ever since its been sitting in it. I think to give it the best chance for survival ill give it until the end of tomorrow at least. I also bought myself some noodles and some breakfast for tomorrow.

      Early evening was pretty much just me bumming around until about eight when I headed back to thirty30. Tonight was jam night and it was so cool! It was a bunch of locals and travellers alike just jumping on stage and playing their hearts out. Any instrument could jump in whenever. The instruments involved are below:

      Violin
      Harmonica
      Saxaphone
      Tamberine
      Electric guitar

      I also met a few of the musicians and Sophie a girl from the UK who was pretty sweet and had cycled from the south island all the way up to Paihia which was an incredible accomplishment if i do say so. By about 11 i left but i wasnt ready to go home just yet so i veered off the road towards the shore again but went the other way. I found this little cove with almost no light from the town and just a little bit from the island across the bay. The stars were AMAZING. In fact im writing this whole post from just underneath them (on my ipod). So beautiful 😊

      Just got home. Had a 10 minute dance party along the shore for my walk home to starlight by neverest and dance and love that lasts by tim halperin. What a lovely way to end the night. Big day trip in the morning so ive got to sleep now. Take care everyone and chat soon!

      Day 91

      Haruru Falls cruise and kayak adventure

      What a pre-adventure - so we're looking at the forecast the day before and madly calling the office to re-book our kayak tour, as there is supposed to be a major rain dump at the appointed hour of 10am. The lady agrees to move us to 1pm. Phew... maybe...

      Cue bright sunshine and blue skies the next day at 10am - rain dump delayed to 11pm... then 12pm... then 1pm - doh! Poppy could not help but throw in a few “I told you so”s as we four drowned rats made our way to Pier 6 in the midst of the torrential rainfall.

      Miraculously, the rain stopped dead in its tracks shortly after 1pm and we were able to enjoy a really fun kayak tour! Davy and Mommy were champion paddlers and Poppy kept Meg moving forward in a straight line. We all tried our hand at paddling through the waterfall - the guidance was not supremely helpful though and the rocks did not help either.

      We learned a little about kiwi life and wildlife from our guides Ben and Liam - all in all a fun mid-day adventure, especially age-appropriate for the kids, and very glad that the sun was out in full force all afternoon to keep us dry and warm.      Read more
