    A rest day in Logroño

    24. mars 2022, Spania ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

Today there is a truckers demonstration here in Logrono.

We are ending our Camino. My wife fell the first day on the way down to Zubiri and hurt her wrist. Finally, today we had the wrist looked at and it was in fact broken. The doctor had to re break the wrist to set it properly. Plus the doctor wants us to get the wrist X-rayed every week for the next 4 weeks. With the cast and everything else we can’t see how we can finish. So today I rebooked our flight home. Very sorry our adventure is ending.Les mer

Day 10. Los Arcos to Viana

    22. mars 2022, Spania ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

March 22 - - 21.4 Kms - 13.4 Miles. Los Arcos to Viana. Our stay in the Casa Abuela was great. Pilgrim meal - our first on this Camino was a great way to spend some time with pilgrims we had seen over the last few days. Only one bar was open in the evening and only one (Bar Buen Camino) that we saw in the morning for a bit of breakfast before our start to Viana. We left Los Arcos in the rain and it pretty much stuck around our entire walk. No bars were open in Sansol. One bar/ Albergue was open in Torres del Rio - where 6 of our pilgrims spent the night. I realize it has been 12 years since we walked this way but we had no recollection of how difficult this stage was on the knees. I think in Wise Pilgrim’s app it’s called the”knee breaker”. In 2010 a couple of young Spaniards urged us to continue to Logrono which we did. Not this trip😁. Spending the night here in Viana at the San Pedro Pension. Clean but very small rooms. When we arrived we tried to get a room at the hostel Casa Armandariz. When we entered the establishment the lady at the bar ignored me for about 5 minutes before asking what I wanted. When I asked for a room she said no rooms you have to go elsewhere. It definitely wasn’t an issue that they were completo as there were hardly any pilgrims. Anyway their loss of 50 euros. Tomorrow we walk a short walk to Logrono where we will take a day or two off so we can get Palma’s wrist attended to.Les mer

    Day 9 - Villatuerta - Los Arcos

    21. mars 2022, Spania ⋅ 🌧 9 °C

26Km - 16.2 miles Villatuerta to Los Arcos. Since we had a shorter day yesterday we made up for it today. We walked 16 miles. It was raining on and off - not heavy, just a light rain. We had a nice lunch at Villamayor de Monjardin where we had to decide to stop for the day or keep going. I felt I couldn’t walk another step. The bartender however said it was an easy walk. So we had a chisterra sausage sandwich, a couple claras and cafe con leche. Then we decided to keep going!  It was about 9 miles walking in the middle of nowhere and we didn’t see another pilgrim until we got to our destination for the day. Palma was able to see a medic after we got here. He wrapped her wrist very nicely. He didn’t have the capability to do an X-ray but he said the town we’ll be in tomorrow will be able to X-ray though I’m not sure that is necessary. We are staying in a double room with our own bath/shower again. I think our albergue days of sharing baths and sleeping in rooms with a bunch of pilgrims is behind us. It is hard to get a good sleep with a lot of people in the same room. We will have a communal dinner in this place tonight which will be nice since we know a couple of other folks staying in this place. It was great catching up with you yesterday! Les mer

Day 8 Puente la Reina to Villatuerte

    20. mars 2022, Spania ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

March 20 22.5 Kms - 14.1 miles Puenta la Reina to Villatuerte. Quick breakfast in the Hotel Jakue bar. Great coffee and tostada. We were on the road by 8:30. It was a good walk. We got to the village of Mañeru at 10:00. The church bells started ringing so we were able to attend mass. There was a tienda open and a Farmacia so several pilgrims stopped here to rest. We stopped to get compeed. The Albergue Maralox in Cirauqui had a sign up saying “open next season”. There were no bars until we got to Villatuerte where we were hoping to stay at Casa Mágica but they won’t open until March 29th. Instead we are staying at Casa Rural 643. Double room with our own bath for 45 euros. They offer a dinner for 15 euros and breakfast for 5 euros but the bar is right across the street so we will eat there. Ended up having one of my favorite meals chistorra, potatoes and a fried egg. Next few days call for rain. Not happy so we will try to leave early.Les mer

Day 7 - Pamplona to Puente la Reina

    19. mars 2022, Spania ⋅ ☀️ 4 °C

25.5 Kms - 15.9 miles. Pamplona to Puente La Reina. We were the only ones in our room last night! (Casa Paderborn ). Had a good sleep and had breakfast at Paderborn which opened March 1 for the season. There were only six pilgrims here last night. It is a long walk out of Pamplona. There was a bar open in Cizur Menor - best cafe con leche so far this trip. The small town of Zariquiegui before the climb To Alto de Perdon had a small tienda selling drinks and snacks. No bar though. Next door was the Albergue San Andres. We thought we might stay in Uterga this night but the Albergue de Perdon was not open. The Casa Baztam (BnB) across the was was open but we didn’t want stay there. We did buy a couple of bocadillos and left. We saw nothing open nor a single person the rest of the way to Puente la Reina. Most of the way today was rough. We had to share the way up to Alto with bicycles. It was narrow, rocky and in some parts muddy. 12 years ago when we climbed the Alto we were asked to pose for pictures for a motorcycle magazine. No such luck this time. 😎We did not have to contend with bikes on the way down but it looked like “improvements” were made dumping truckloads of rocks and parts were quite dangerous. You’d step on a rock and a small avalanche of stones would begin. Cullen fell once and really bent his walking stick. Finally got to Puente la Reina and stopped at Jakue. Albergue rooms unavailable so we got a hotel room with a tub for 59 euros. We need this luxury tonight! Unfortunately the restaurant is closed for an event tonight, but the bar is open! Yippee!Les mer

Day 6 - Zubiri to Pamplona

    18. mars 2022, Spania ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

15.2 miles/24.3 Kms. Nice walk today from Zubiri to Pamplona for the most part. No rain today - yippee😁. Maybe one bar on the way to Pamplona. We didn’t see any type of tienda to stop for provisions. There was a man, Juan, in the middle of nowhere (4-6 k before Pamplona) selling fruits and beverages - a very welcome sight! We decided to stay in Paderborn tonight. We stayed here in 2010. Very acceptable. 7 euro for bed, 3 for breakfast and they will do the laundry. 3.50 to wash and 3.50 to dry. We asked for a double room for the two us which they didn’t have available so we’re in a room with 2 sets of bunk beds. They have another room for 8 people and they will put additional pilgrims in there if anyone else arrives. Hopefully we will be the only ones in our room.Les mer

Day 5 We begin in Roncesvalles to Zubiri

    17. mars 2022, Spania ⋅ 🌧 5 °C

We stayed in the albergue de peregrinos de Orreags-Roncesvalles. Had dinner at Casa Sabina. It was okay - not like it was 12 years ago when the service was top notch and the food was wonderful. The Albergue although modern is quite noisy. The toilet flushing is particularly loud. And if you have rubber soled sandals it is also noisy. We did not get the breakfast there, we opted to get breakfast on the way.

We did not stop at the first bar in Burquett which was a mistake because the bar near the church where we wanted to stop was not open when we passed so we walked to Espinal for our first coffee. The walk to Zubiri should be renamed “knee crusher”. It was really a tiring walk. There may be an alternate road route and if there is then take it! It is a very rocky trail and very slippery when wet and it rained most of the day beginning in Roncesvalles. It actually is quite dangerous, Cullen fell twice (no injuries) and I once and got a bad sprained wrist. We did not make a reservation in Zubiri. Was hoping to stay at Palo de Arellano but it was complete according to their website. We checked into Albergue Zlbaldika (private)where we stayed 12 years ago (private) and got a double room with shared bath for both of us for 44 euros. The proprietor , Maria, was most kind and extremely helpful. Definitely recommend if you’re looking for private accommodation In Zubiri. Wanted to stay in Ibarrola in Pamplona but they don’t open until April

Day 4 - On the train

    16. mars 2022, Spania ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Walked from the hotel (Hotel Paris) in Zaragoza to the Train station. Took the train from Zaragoza to Pamplona and the bus, the only bus, to Roncesvalles departed at 2:00. Tonight we’ll be in the albergue (so different from our first Camino in 2010 - the big room with 100+ bunks). Dinner at Casa Sabina and mass at 8:00.Les mer
