Day 37 We have arrived in Santiago!

      12 juni, Spanje ⋅ ☁️ 57 °F

It started out to be just another 27k trek through the forest and 5 small towns. But it got more crowded as we got closer to Santiago, and Santiago is a big town so it seemed like it took forever to get to old town, where the cathedral would be located. Finally, we heard the bagpiper greeting those arriving at the square. Upon entering the square, we were overwhelmed with joy and gratitude for what we had accomplished, walking 480 miles in 37 days. Immediately, we saw others in our Camino Family - folks that we had walked with, shared meals and accommodation with. It was a giant, tear filled reunion! Here is a partial list of friends and their country that we met in the square: Marian Australia, Carla the Netherlands, Pete Australia. Kevin Whales, Jake and Troy Ireland, Liz Australia, Steven Hawaii, Steacy and Carolyn Canada, Paul Belgium.
I am so grateful for the opportunity to connect with such fabulous people.
      Off to Finnestar tomorrow

      Santiago de Compostela

      Gisteren, Spanje ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

      Day 42 Santiago de Compostela
Distance from Amenal to Santiago 17kms

The final day of our Camino.
The sun was shining as we set out the temperature a cool 9c we walked with a spring in our step. Surprisingly the way was quiet and at times we had it to ourselves a good time to be in the moment and concentrate on our last steps towards the city.
Santiago came into view some 6kms out the excitement rose a level.
Walking into the square at 11.20am 6 weeks after we left St Jean Pied de Port (to the day and time) full of joy and a sense of achievement.
An Adventure it has been without injury or blisters embracing the challenges and putting one foot in front of the other for over 800kms.
Filled with pride and wonderful memories this adventure has now come to an end.
I hope you have enjoyed it as much as we have.

      Day 36 27.5k to Brea

      12 juni, Spanje ⋅ 🌙 46 °F

It's been so cool in the Galacia region of Spain lately. It was 44 degrees when we left Melide this morning. Today involved a lot of forrest hiking, which is so beautiful. We hiked through many tunnels of trees and went through several groves of eucalyptus trees, which smelled heavenly. We usually eat something light before we head out and get caffe au lait and a real breakfast an hour or two later, but today we went through several towns before finding food at a tiny store set up in the forrest. The Civil Guard consists of officers from both Spain and France that patrol the Camino. Our cute hotel that has room for 18 people has a tiny pool. Getting up extra early tomorrow to hike into Santiago and arrive at the Cathedral de Santiago which has been our destination for a long time! So excited!Meer informatie

      Day 35 Into Melide

      10 juni, Spanje ⋅ ☀️ 55 °F

After a delicious breakfast in Lestedo with an Irish Mom and her 10 year old daughter, we headed out of the rural town towards the bigger town of Melide. As we got to the beautiful arched bridge, we ran into Will and Patricia, who we met at Borda, in the Pyrenees Mountains 33 days ago. Lunch with our Tazmanian friends Kaye and Anne, and our Australian friends Margaret and Dave. Melede is known for its fresh octopus, and I tried a few pieces at dinner after Patricia told me to put it on bread and pretend it was pizza. It's still not my favorite 😕 Long walk tomorrow, followed by a longer walk into SANTIAGO the next day. Its so hard to believe our destination is so near.Meer informatie

      Tag 4 Camino, alles normal?!

      11 juni, Spanje ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

      Day 32 walking into Santiago!

      10 juni, Spanje ⋅ ☀️ 10 °C

So we left our Albergue Espiritu Xacebeo early this morning for our final walk, the sky was blue and the sun was out but there was a chill in the air and windy at times!
We initially walked through forest tracks and uphill to walk around the airport. It was a strange and elated feeling to be walking for the last day on the Camino. There were groups of youngster walking who were fairly vocal singing and enjoying themselves. In fact the way in was fairly green and did switch to country lanes, and then turned more urban for the last 7Km or so. There was lovely viewing point on the way in and you can just make out the twin towers of Santiago cathedral.
It was strange to finally arrive here and we did have little trouble locating the front of the cathedral (?!) and the pilgrims office. Of course we located them and proudly obtained our Compostela! The square in front of the cathedral was full of celebrating pilgrims and quite a festive atmosphere 😊
David arrived safely and we had lovely meal the three of us together. We have day trip tomorrow to the coast or end of the world Finistere, then David and I bus down to Porto Wednesday morning and then into Lisbon to meet old school friends on Friday for some proper R and R!
Big thank you for all your likes, comments, support and following me for last month or so - truly appreciated 😘😘😘

      Pontevedra

      7 juni, Spanje ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

Pontevedra got very busy the later it got... After 22h it got even busier with kids running around and people (lots of pilgrims) having fun.
I had earlier a salad and it was very tasty with tuna pieces and potatoes. I needed more energy so I got a "gofre" (like a waffle but more doughy) with ice cream.
Clearly I was tired! I left early the next day.

      Day 34 Lestedo

      9 juni, Spanje ⋅ ⛅ 59 °F

We left early this morning to avoid the tour groups that are walking the final stage of the camino. Had to laugh when we ran into a Portuguese tour group before we even got on the camino. Lots of forest walking until we got to dairy land. A lady on the road sold us some goat cherse or maybe it was sheep cheese, which we will eat tonight. I walked with a lady from Israel who just started walking 2 days ago, and she was so excited to hear that I started walking in France, that she invited me to be in her video blog, lol. We are staying in the small town of Levardo, such a beautiful place. Our hotel is maybe the nicest we have stayed in. A renovated multilevel hotel with dining room, family room, library, outside dining. Our room , the penthouse, is enormous. The food is amazing and staf is so welcoming. We walked to Viller de Donas, a church built in the 800s. A local 97 year old man opened the church and showed us around. It contained crypts from knights protecting the camino and murals from the 1100s. The man was sharp and passionate about history. He lived through the Spanish Civil War. People in this town live a long time. His neighbor is 101.Meer informatie

      June 9

      10 juni, Spanje ⋅ 🌬 18 °C

Today we are 27 km from our destination, so I have chosen to take the bus. I would walk part way but due to the isolated region we are in the bus service is limited and it's either walk the entire way, try and get a taxi (which would be expensive) or catch the bus. Our friendly host, Manuel, at our albergue kindly gave us a ride to the bus stop. This is our first attempt at catching the bus after our fiasco on the bus last week, so both Lorelee and myself were a little nervous about how it would go. I found it very interesting eavesdropping on the young couple behind us who were riding the bus because her ankle was in a lot of pain. They were trying so hard to justify their decision to bus rather than walk the remaining distance to Finisterre. It begged the question for me; why, as humans, are we so tough on ourselves and reluctant to practice kindness, especially to ourselves? Thankfully about an hour and a half after boarding the bus, we proudly disembarked in Cee. To our surprise, we wandered around the corner from the station into a large bustling outdoor market. We enjoyed exploring through the numerous stalls with a variety of items such as clothing, shoes, blankets, jewelry, food, and plants. I bought a pair of pants, a shirt, some traditional raisin bread, and cheese. Lorelee purchased a blanket and churros. We were thirsty after all our efforts at the market so we sat in the square at a cafe and sipped a tinto de verano while watching the world go by. A siesta followed by a short stroll to the laundromat and another tinto de verano in the square would complete our rest day.Meer informatie
