      Mesquita

      Als je in Cordoba bent, moet je de Mesquita moskee gezien hebben. Een mooi indrukwekkend bouwwerk. Begonnen als een moskee en tweemaal flink uitgebreid. Daarna hebben de katholieken er nog een kerk opgezet. De toren kan ook beklommen worden, maar in verband met de hitte hebben we daar van afgezien.Leggi altro

      A day and a half wandering the old Jewish quarter of Cardoba. Very scenic and a manageable number of tourists.
      Temperatures mid to high 20s in the afternoon and shops shutting 3 to 6 pm. Siesta time, so when in Spain.....

      Cordoba in the Sun...

      A day just cruising the district. Nothing special on the agenda. Googled our way between some highlights, which is working brilliantly. My skills are next level now!
      We even checked in by Bluetooth to this apartment, which went smoothly once we realized we were on 1st floor, not second! Every place, booking, has a different system it seems which requires upskilling. Thank goodness we're using a Spanish sim with oodles of data available.
      Very impressed with the hydraulic engineering in the Roman baths. They used the smoke discharge from the furnace (heating the water) to heat all the floors and walls via ducts under the floor. Not bad for 30 BC.
      We're learning a new skill, studying bidet 101. ( sorry, no pictures) We've been horrified they don't like flushing toilet paper, instead providing a bin. Bidets are common, so grudgingly, I have put butt to seat. Enough said.      Leggi altro

      Last day in Córdoba and the south

      Another lovely day. We met Omnia at 9, had breakfast and headed off towards the Jewish quarter again, hoping to beat the crowds in the narrow streets…and we did..very successful - we found the synagogue which is hard when tour groups are blocking the way, very old and interesting - only one of the 3 synagogues left in Spain. Then we went to the Alcázar of the Christian kings…another big fortress, but not Arabic style. And no long queue to get in, though quite a lot of people and school groups, and we got in free - being jubilados- retired!! It was a good visit, and a tower to climb with great views (and not so high that it was a huge effort to climb). Then that led on to the alcazar gardens which were almost the highlight. Beautifully laid out, the ubiquitous orange trees, sculpted cypresses, and others - flowers in bloom, and importantly the fountains were founting - the look of them and the tinkling of the water is such a pleasure - calming and beautiful. Then visited the Khalifa baths (also free jubilados)…ruins from the Islamic period.

      So a lovely morning, and we stopped for bocadillos and coffee/colacao and a break. Then back on the trail to wander some more and find interesting places. Omnia parted from us after a while to do her own things, and Amr and I pursued the churches listed as good to visit and on the list with the Mesquita ticket…but only found one open, a lovely one, but after that they all seemed to be having a siesta…but we had fun wandering in different streets from our usual circuit, and where normal Cordoba residents seemed to be living and having their normal lives….stopped for another refreshment and back in room for downtime.

      Still perfect weather, doesn’t get too hot. Clouds floating around, but no imminent rain and mostly sunny. Amr is suffering terribly from spring allergies which is driving him mad with an annoying cough and runny nose and we hope this will improve tomorrow when we go to Madrid. It has only been since we came south, and this time last year he was fine in Madrid…so here’s hoping. Meeting Omnia at 7 for our last dinner here, then get a train late tomorrow morning back to Madrid.

      …I had published, but just have to add that we had the most perfect dinner! Amr and I had seen areas off the tourist track which looked fun and when we went there at about 7.30 all was a bit quiet, but we decided to sit at one place and try…and had a drink and asked for menu and it was different from the usual things we had kept having…still Spanish style but with little twists…Spanish fusion? Anyway, it was amazing, and such a lovely end to our Córdoba experience…by the time we left, people were queuing up and waiting for us to pay and leave…such luck and a perfect evening!       Lovely day in Córdoba

      It is my birthday and has been an excellent day, and it hasn’t finished yet. We met Omnia for a leisurely breakfast around 8.30 in the little bakery attached to, but not part of, the hotel. Then we set off walking, via the tourist info which gave us a better map, and we discovered that our Mesquita tickets also qualify us for entrance to many churches dotted around the town. And it doesn’t have to be today…perfect.

      There are many little narrow streets, and flowers and courtyards, so pretty. We wandered down to the river, and walked over the Roman bridge and up the tower at the end, which is a museum plus a lovely view from the not very high top. We then walked through the old Jewish area, which was quite crowded - round the bridge, the Jewish quarter, the Mesquita and the alcazar is where the hordes go, but still not quite as confronting as Seville and Granada. And the weather remains kind - the same cool to start, and never getting too hot…

      Stopped for refreshments- croquetas - this time with prawn and spinach - and then went to the Mesquita for our 2pm time slot…we had bought tickets online, but of course found out today that for this we could have got them on the spot!! Oh well…it was easy. And very popular…many many people, but this is such a vast area it doesn’t feel too crowded. It was built as a huge mosque in 788 AD with many columns, and when the Christians overthrew the Arabs they turned it into a huge cathedral in the 1200s. It is an extraordinary building, with the columns and lamps like a mosque, then you find a gothic cathedral structure all amongst it. Fortunately they kept a lot the beautiful Islamic decoration…it is a huge area, and there are chapels all around the edge. It is hard to describe, and impossible to take photos that capture the whole, but of course we all attempt to.

      After that, Omnia had her own wander looking at the very interesting shops and streets, and we did our own wander, ending up with downtime back at hotel. Getting ready for birthday evening!

      …Now just, and it’s after 11..late! But we had a remarkable evening. First we went to the concert we had seen a notice about at the Conservatorio Superior de Musica - featuring saxophonists. So we thought might be fun…it was free, and obviously was students practising their performing… but they were good…it went for a little over an hour, and at first I was happy, but not enthralled, but then it pepped up, and they did a version of the Tchaikovsky serenade for strings arranged for 11 saxophones, some Manuel de Falla ending with the ritual fire dance, and an encore of a Brahms Hungarian dance!! Didn’t think I’d ever hear them played by saxophonists! They were good, and got riotous applause from (I think) fellow students…Amr took a short video of the encore - (not forbidden at this sort of concert!) it isn’t in focus, but you can get a sense of the fun!

      Then we went to a restaurant where we had booked for 9.30. Really good…not posh, but obviously popular and delicious food. At that hour it was still busy, but tourists had left by then…more people walked in after us…no problem, kitchen still busy. Lovely birthday evening!      Leggi altro

      Auf dem Weg retour nach Portugal haben wir in La Puebla de Cazalla den Stellplatz der Gemeinde angefahren. Der ist wirklich toll: kostenfrei, inklusive Ver- & Entsorgung, WC & Duschen (haben wir nicht benötigt) und Strom für 10 Fahrzeuge.
      Es war goldrichtig, schon dort einen Halt einzulegen, denn der Wind hat schon um 17:00 🕔 ordentlich geblasen. Gegen 20:00 🕗 wurde aus dem starken Wind ein Sturm mit Böen bis ca. 80-90km/h 😳🫨 - die Wohnmobile, auch unseres, wackelten alle ganz ordentlich. Wir sind uns wie auf einem Schiff auf hoher See vorgekommen. Ich hab schon überlegt, ob ich für die Nacht eine „Seasick“ Tablette einwerfen soll.… kurz nach 23:00 hatte der Spuk ein Ende.
      Heute haben wir dann einige Schäden des Sturms gesehen: im Park nebenan lagen kleinere Bäume entwurzelt da. Und auf der Autobahn kurz vor Sevilla gab es auf der Gegenfahrbahn einen mächtigen Stau: 1. mussten Bäume, die auf der Fahrbahn lagen zusammengeschnitten werden und 2. hat es in der Nacht einen Sattelschlepper einfach umgeweht, der lag in der Mitte im Oleander, da waren die Bergungsarbeiten noch im Gange.
      Jetzt schauen wir mal, wie sich das Wetter in Portugal entwickelt.…      Leggi altro

      Umgesetzte Berge und Wassermangel

      Angestrebtes Ziel war ein gutes Stück nach Südosten zu fahren... am Ende wurden es 233 km, aber als Belohnung mit einem super Stellplatz in einem Olivenhain. Da wollten wir schon immer mal übernachten... 👍👍👍

      Uns begleitete fast die ganz Tour die Korkeiche und nochmal die Korkeiche. Darunter wie gehabt verschiedene 🐑🐂🐃🐄🐐🐎 und das sowohl auf Hügeln und später auch in den Bergen.

      Dort machten wir einen Zwischenstopp in Almonster de Real, um uns die Mezquita anzuschauen, eine frühchristliche Kirche: ein sehr kleines, aber nicht weniger beeindruckendes Bauwerk der Frühgeschichte aus dem 10. Jahrhundert. Das Dörfchen war auch sehr sehenswert, aber sehr auf Tourismus ausgelegt.

      Bei der Weiterfahrt überquerten wir danach schwefelgelbe Flüsse, die eine Vorankündigung auf mehrere Minenstädte waren. Dort wurden riesige Berge versetzt und umgewälzt!! Beeindruckend, aber irgendwie auch bedrückend...
      Wir hatten deswegen auch keine Lust, die Angebote eines Minenbesuches wahrzunehmen.
      Wir mögen zwar beide alte Industriekultur, aber aufgerissene Erde und verseuchte Minenseen sind nicht so schön.

      In Richtung Sevilla nutzen wir weiter das andalusische Straßennetz, um dann Sevilla im weiten Bogen zu umfahren. Hier fuhren wir aus den Bergen in eine riesige Ebene und dort gab es dann nur noch endlose Monokulturen, vor allem Orangen , Mandeln, Nüsse, Kartoffeln und irgendwann Weizenfelder.... Klein Idaho in Spanien. Das braucht alles viel ,viel Wasser.
      Auf der von uns befahrenen Ruta da agua, der Wasserroute, gab es jedoch nur noch ausgetrockenete Flüsse, was uns das Wasserproblem in Spanien sehr verdeutlichte. Auch der massig zu sehende Müll an den Straßenrändern, scheint für die Spanier kein Problem darzustellen ....

      Stellplatzsuche in Weizenfeldern ist vergleichbar mit der Präzenz eines einzelnen Opernsängers auf einer Staatsopernbühne... nicht gut !
      Nach Carmona und Arahal im weiten Nichts, bog Andy einfach mal links, in einen plötzlich auftauchenden Olivenhain, ab ... Hier standen verstreut Wohnhäuser und von Andy angesprochen, zeigten uns Antonio aus Spanien und Ines aus Belgien uns unseren möglichen Stellplatz... gesehen, für topp befunden und mit leuchtenden Augen angenommen...🏜

      Abends waren wir dann bei den beiden eingeladen und hatten einen regen Austausch in Spanisch, Englisch, Deutsch und Flämisch... sehr schön! Und ihre Hunde, einfach zu süß ❤      Leggi altro

      Day 24: Vva de Algaidas - Encinas Reales

      Day 24, from Villanueva de Algaidas to Encinas Reales, 17.2km.
      It wasn't long before we found ourselves outside the town, first following a few poorly-formed paths, which led us past the ruins of a Franciscan convent. We crossed an arroyo on a medieval bridge, only to find a path on the other side, badly ravined by the recent rains, which leads to the village of La Atalaya.
      On leaving the village, we started a long climb through olive groves. Up, up and down again. Before reaching Cuevas Bajas, there is a viewpoint, El Cedrón, offering a beautiful panorama.
      At Cuevas Bajas, we refuelled with tostadas and Aquarius Limón, which we needed to start the climb to Encinas Reales, all on a bitumen road. Leaving Cuevas Bajas, we crossed the Río Genil, passing from the province of Málaga to that of Córdoba.
      The Encina Reales albergue is very simple, with no kitchen, and is located under an esplanade with a playground. And we were very happy to be under this simple roof when a hailstorm broke out. It wouldn't have been fun to be out on the roads at that time!      Leggi altro

      Camping Willsom

      Ieri, Spagna ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

      Turen mod Sevilla går gennem mange rigtig store oliven plantager. Guiden, vi var med til Caminito del Rey, fortalte os, at regionen Andalusien producerer 15% af de oliven der bliver brugt på verdensplan. Det er alligevel en ret stor andel. Men når man ser mængden af plantager, så giver det meget god mening. Der er oliven så langt øjet rækker. 🙂
      Guiden fortalte også at de Nerier som er plantet langs vejene, ikke kun er smukke, men også tåler tørke. Det vigtigste er dog at dyrene ikke søger dem, da de er lidt giftige. Det er jo smart.
      Den sidste vigtige detalje som han fortalte, er at Spaniens nationalsport er: Siesta. 😂
      Vi kørte også forbi mange store solsikkemarker. Det er godt nok flot. 🌻☺️.
      Lidt synd at vores bil er så beskidt, at billederne bliver lidt uklare. Men med 13 m/s og en lille byge i går nat, så sætter det sine spor på alt. Hold nu op hvor det støver. Og på stranden blev vi totalt sandblæst, så vi måtte gå tilbage igen. Selvfølgelig først efter at Søren var blevet væltet rundt i de store bølger 😂.
      Campingpladsen her er hyggelig, med gode store pladser, uden sten. Men tilgengæld med meget tør og støvet rød jord. 😁
      Vi googlede en restaurant tæt på og fandt en i et industriområde, men pyt vi ville bare lige ha lidt nem mad. Hold nu op, hvor var det fint. Tjeneren talte ikke ret godt engelsk og menukortet var på spansk, så vi lod ham vælge til os. Kød til Søren og fisk til mig. Wow, hvor var det lækkert. 🥰 Og restauranten er da bare fantastisk.       Castle of Montefrio

      Unser Hauptziel jedoch ist das Castle of Montefrío. Es handelt sich um einen monumentalen Komplex, bestehend aus den Überresten einer ehemaligen riesigen Festung und der gut erhaltenen Kirche, die auf einem großen Felsen über der Stadt liegt.

      Der Zugang zum Äußeren ist kostenlos. Wir mußten 2 € bezahlen, um die Kirche zu betreten, die pädagogische Ausstellung zu sehen und die mehr als 100 Stufen hinaufsteigen, um die Spitze des Turms zu erreichen und die herrliche Aussicht zu genießen.👍😊

      Wir lieben gut erhaltene Burgen. Das ist wirklich das einzige, was wir auf unseren vielen Reisen in die USA immer vermißt haben. Aber der Aufstieg kostet uns jedes Mal viel Schweiß. Dieser wird mit Glückshormonen kompensiert, wenn man es endlich bis oben geschafft hat. Und was für einen Ausblick wir von hier oben haben👍👍

      Auch heute sind wir wieder durch Olivenplantagen gefahren. Olivenbäume, soweit das Auge reicht. Und dennoch hat die Landschaft immer wieder Überraschungen parat, wie heute z.B. die schneebedeckten Berge in der Ferne. Es ist immer ein Genuß, durch das Innere Andalusiens zu cruisen. Diese Weiten, diese Einsamkeit, diese Landschaften sind einzigartig. 👍

      Die Zeit verfliegt wie im Flug. Ein Tag ist gefühlt schöner als der andere . Es ist eine Freude, hier zu sein👍😊      Leggi altro
